You should probably warn the poor fellah that "brief full-throttle accels within the speed limit" means no more than a two second stomp, IF that long....Heh-heh-heh. Overshoot is going to be the biggest problem. I did about the same breakin as you, and after the first couple hundred miles, a once each way to work full throttle stomp. 20,000 miles and no problems (and an all around average of 20 mpg).
Thank you guys. I am still in first 200 miles. What bothers me alot is the gas milage. I am getting around 13 miles per gallon. I drive the car very gently and still it eats gas. Is this gas consumption usual for the break-in period?
Looking forward to get answers from you. Thanks again.
The gas mileage should get better the more miles you get on the engine.Right now everything is still tight and the engine is working harder until it breaks in.My experiance has been after the first thousand miles you will see improvement in MPG.13 does sound low compared to other owners of Hemi's.If your mileage doesn't improve after the thousand miles,I would bring it back to the dealer and have them check everything.Good luck.
I failed to mention that you should use mid-grade gas for the Hemi.I know it hurts with the price of gas so high, but these engine are designed for the use of mid-grade.If you don't use it you won't get the performance or gas mileage the manufactor says it will.
Thank you xtec. Well, 13 MPG I got from the on-board computer. That damn thing does not tell the truth. The actual milage is 16.8 MPG mixed driving (mostly city). Yes, I know I have to feed the beast with 89 gas.
I hope the MPG will improve with time and miles.
The car is just awesome. I smile every time I drive it.
I also found you can be too gentle with the beast. I actually get better gas mileage if I do energetic accels rather than lethargic ones, probably because it gets you into the 4-cylinder mode quicker. But if you're chirping tires, you're overdoing it....
Picked up the 300C in Feb...first American sedan since mid-90's and so far am very pleased...last car was a Saab and the first 450 miles included almost 120 miles at 105mph ( running late for the father-in law surprise party)and never had problem one with the car. A little less stress with the 300C to start but I do have a bit of a leadfoot and am looking forward to seeing how this car runs/handles at 100+.
GOOD NEWS THEY HAVE FOUND A FIX FOR THE SLIPPING TRANS. return to your dealer for repairs a TSB came out on the 20th of last month for a fix. I can tell you it works. GOOD LUCK TO ALL.

Ummm, something is wrong with the specs as you've written them. Either you're looking at a 300C STR8 with the 6.1 liter Hemi with factory 20" wheels or you're looking at a 300C with the 5.7 liter Hemi with the MDS and factory 18" wheels. If it is the SRT8 then yes, the price is fair, if not, then the price they're asking is an absolute total rip-off.
My gut guess is that since every component of the car you described was a plain 300C (except the engine size), that you should take a pass on this car. That having been said, if you can get them to drop the price to a more reasonable $29,000, then it might could well be worth a look.
I have a 2006 300C. I keep a log of miles traveled and quantity of fuel consumed. At 13,300 miles the average was 19.6 MPG. More than 50% of that mileage was town driving. The on-board MPG calculation is closer than you might think. Just remember that you need to re-set it once in a while. 2 weekends ago on Saturday we did a 200 mile round trip. As we left town that morning the on-board MPG said 18.7, I re-set it and it very quickly headed up into the 20's. After about 30 miles traveled it settled down at 25.5 MPG. When we arrived home that evening I checked the on-board calculation and it was 25.8 MPG. Invest in a little black book and keep track for a few thousand miles and then you will know what kind of mileage you are getting. By the way I have put nothing but 87 octane in since day one. I agree with you, it is an awesome ride. I feel bad for the folks who write in to this forum about the problems they are having.
I have a 2006 Chrysler 300 with 2.7 liter V-6. Bought it in December when the Kansas weather was cold. Seemed like the hot air was DAMN HOT (I have the standard manual Hot/Cold control with Cold at the 9 o'clock position, neutral at 12 o'clock and Hot at 3 o'clock. When it started to warm up this spring, the a/c did not seem to get "Cold." I bought a temperature probe and logged some vent outlet temperature. Would never get below 50F with full cold, blower high, recirculate. Took it in to dealer. They said refrigerant was 0.5 lbs low. Helped marginally. Got hot in Kansas again and took car back into dealer. I had gathered a ton of data about vent temperature against various settings. The most curious thing was that by moving my manual temp control only one detent off of full cold (the manual temp selector has 20 detents) it raised the vent temperature 10F. Second decent raised temperature another 6 degrees. By the time I got to the middle of the Cold position (about 9:30 o'clock) temperature was 90F. At neutral (12 o'clock) temperature is 110F. Dealer now says it is the controller. While all this is going on, the vent temperature coming out of the rear console is about 20F hotter under full Cold settings. On Monday, controller will be replaced. We shall see if this fixes problem. I have been driving their loaners during this time, and both the PT Cruiser and Caravan set significantly colder. I am wondering if there is a damper door that has been misadjusted somewhere, allowing some hot air to get into the system even when controller is set to full Cold. I sure like the car, and have put 10K miles on it. I have been very careful about recording mileage. In town and mixed driving, I get about 21-23 MPG. Up until last fill up (driving 70), I never saw more than 24-25 MPG. My last fill up of strict highway driving, I saw 27.9, so perhaps the engine is getting broken in. I drive new cars, and jumped ship from the Nissan line to buy a black Chrysler. If they don't get the A/C problem fixed very soon, I will be trading it off for a Toyota Camry or Nissan Maxima. Sure love the looks and ride of the new 300. The base engine is adequate for my needs, and I bought it based on value and desire for good highway MPG.
There is a service bulletin for the problem you are having Its says the a/c won't cool down in hot and humid condition. The bulletin # is 2401405.I hope this helps I hate to see you jump ship to the japanese cars.
I have a 2005 300 Ltd. that has an idling problem which I have taken it to the dealer four times and they keep saying the it is a computer programing problem. Anyone had the same problem and what is the fix if any.
There are two sevice bulletins that are for rough idle. The first one is #0900505 that says multiple cylinder misfire or rough idle. The second one is bulletin#1802605 for rough idle, idle sag, cruise control fail to engage.I don't know how a dealer could mess this up with 2 bulletins for rough idle.I hope this helps and get a fix.I have a 06 3.5 with no problem so far.Good luck.
Thank you, forum members, for the real help. I still wonder why my MPG computer shows so low numbers. More interesting, I get in 50% city/50% highway driving around 16.0 MPG. It has started to bother me a lot.
I have another question. Should I change oil and filter after the first 1000 miles or is it better to do a first oil/filter change at 3000 miles? I will be very thankfull for your advice.
Its up to you if you want to change your oil at 1000 miles. Its not a bad idea, but you won't hurt anything at 3000.I suggest that you get your oil changes at the dealer. The oil filter they use are factory which is alot better then the ones used at the quick oil change places. Most people don't know this, but you can buy in advance oil changes from Chrysler, its called Essential care.Just talk to your service adviser and look at the options. You can pick how many years you want to pay for.I bought the 4 year plan, and it comes out to 8.44 for a oil change at the dealer. They send you a coupon book, when you go in for service they take the coupon, thats it.
As far as your Mileage in mix driving you should be in the 20s.Read greyfox1 message#4612,he gives a good explaination on the MPGs.If that doesn't help, have the dealer check it out.Good luck.
Thank you, xtec. I bought the most expensive Care program from Chrysler for 5 years/60K miles so all my oil/filter changes are free. I am going to get a first oil change at 1000 miles and at the same time I am going to consult with the service department about MPG I get.
I really appreciate your help, guys. Thank you again.
I have a 2005 300C. Love the car, gas mileage definitely not what i thought it would be but that's life! On another front - my left front has had a few leaks (construction at my house) that have been patched but it's definitely time for a new tire. I have 9K on the car and thought about replacing all four if there's a "great" tire out there that makes a difference on this car.
My car came with Continental ContiTact Touring tires. Anyone else have another tire with substantial performance increases?
Someone from one of these boards recommended Goodyear Assurance. I'd prefer a Michelin but they don't make the size. I'm still on my Conti's, which, now that I'm up to 20K, appear to be experiencing accelerated wear.
Well I took the car back to the dealer, they changed the front wind screen, repaired the electrical system, replaced the rear vents, and still can't find the problem with the engine idle. I am going to Chrysler next to have the vehicle replaced. I love the 300 but won't drive this one another mile!
I'm on my second 300-- a 2004 Touring jobbie that lacked the candy of dual temp control etc. It was a rental unit with 20M when I bought it and 25M when I traded for the Mar 05 300 Limited--it had 13M and now has 18 M. I have to say I have had zero problems with either. Only time DC looked at this one was to put the update in the transmission. It makes 25 to 27 MPG on road trips --all in the 70mphs and lots of head winds here in mountainous Montana. I change my own oil at 2500 miles and that has been my only out of pocket besides gasoline. I have had the Good Year Integrity tires--factory equipped on both cars. I really can't tell there is any milage on these at 18000-- they look new but I did just have them rotated. I have a 97 LHS with the 3.5--6 and 4 speed box. Its in the high 90M and has had a new set of spark plugs and a few air cleaners. Doesn't use a drop of oil and being lighter than the 300 it makes right at 30 MPG. does not use a drop of oil. I rolled a 2000 LHS with 130M--everything original and nary a problem tillI bent it all to h---. I feel for you folks with problems but I know the cars are near perfect--you probably need to try a different dealer's shop. I am lucky there--fabulous dealer service and I haven't bought anything from them! old shep
The dealer has been great in trying to fix the problem, however this 300 limited was an aniversity gift to my wife. I have a 3500 cummings, and a 68 roadrunner so I been mopar fan for a long time. These problems have been driving me insane.
I use to have a '68 Road runner.Mine was dark forest green with a 4 speed ,383magnum.Pretty fast car.It is my favorite car that I owned.I been a Mopar fan since since 70. I also worked on Mopar police cars for 23 years.Thats what made me a Mopar man.
Mines is gunmetal blue with a 426, re-enforced front suspension to hold the hemi, upgraded struts, mickey's all around, force ari air induction to cool it off. Will send you picture.
I need to hear from anyone who has had problems with their 300 idle acting funny at a stop light or on sitting stil.
I have had mine the shop 5 times and nothing seems to work.
I think if enough of us get together on this Chrysler has to fix the problem.
I am a loyal fan of MOPAR have been since the 60's, love my 300 ltd. and want to keep her running for a long time. The car is a classic. My dealer has been great but it is time for Diamler/Chrysler to step up to the plate.
Did you try another dealer to see what they can do?This happened to me with a 2001 Chrysler Sebring. My dealer tried everything they could to fix my car.I told them I wanted a buy back. The service manager told me to take it to another dealer. When I did that I got a call back from my service manager telling me Chrysler will buy back my car.I liked the car but it couldn't be fixed.Good Luck I hate it when they can't fix something.
Both my 97 and my 2005 V6s will on occasion idle rough at stop lights. I figure it is carbon blowing off the cylinders and getting stuck between the sparkplug points. Start and stop a few times and it quits. It has to be an electrical or injector miss.--far out--maybe a sticky valve lifter. I ran an implement shop with 5 mechanics for about 20 years. Sometimes mechanics get stuck in a way things are done. The innovative guy will try different things--sometimes the opposite setting solves the problem. Most wont take a chance--the book says... . amen. The boss cant do much about that. Thats why you need to try different shops. As to Mopar history--I have a 75 and a 77 440 New Yorkers licensed and insured and drive them--not much these days--as the old girls will pass anything but a gas station! Also regularily run a 83 Wagoneer. Love those MoPars! shep
Well, I got my 300 Ltd. back, they changed the front windsheld, repaired the rear vents, the battery had two dead cells in it, which the dealer says will help the idling problem. They put a new ESP sensor in it and changed out both power plugs. They found faulty wiring going across the brake peddle asembly. However I was not satified with the auto and Chrysler SAIR is looking into a buy back.
I love the 300 when it is running right, I just got a bad apple, O, by the way, the frontend alighment was off.
Put Mobil 1 5w-20w in my 300c at 22,000 miles. Have driven right at 16,000 miles on the synthetic oil....it has been the best thing I ever did; any engine ticking noises went away due to better film strength; cold winter starts were much easier too; engine running strong and quiet....was worried about availability and didn't switch till I found it at WalMart...continued using MOPAR oil filter
I saw a 2005 300 on CarMax that said it was a Limited (has the heated power seats, dimming mirror, Nav System and walnut trim on the wheel/shifter).....but it has the front end that I always associate with a 300C. Can someone explain if I have it right above or if the Limited comes with the front end shown in Pic 1 rather than Pic 2. Is it a model year difference?
I was wondering how you turned out on your idle problem. I was about to finalize my purchase on the 06 300 limited it is used but only 6k miles seemed like a great deal then I seen your post about the idle problem. And guess what I have the same issue with the 300 limted low idle rough miss with or without AC on. They sales rep tells me oh that is nothing. Please let me know what you have found out
I think three things set off the front end of the 300C: Fog lights outside the body color opening (as in pic1), the bottom of the outboard headlight is round rather than a straight line, and the turn signals are semi-circular and in the upper half of the inboard headlight rather than rectangular and under the headlight module.
Since everybody been talking about their idle,I been keeping a eye on my tach. Its stays steady around 650 rpms, and smooth as silk. This is on a 06 Charger 3.5.I hope it stays that way, even with the a/c its stays at 650,I had to look at my tach a couple of times to make sure the engine was running.I hope you can get yours taken care of.Good luck.
I'm thinking of getting an '05 C in the next month or so. I'm wondering what are the most common problems that owners are having w/ the C so I know what I should keep my eye open for while shopping?
I have had my C for 2 years this last week-end, and have had very few issues. I have an appointment on Thurs because my left rear passenger window will not go up or down and also my windshield wipers come on at times when I activate my turn signal.
I also had one Conti tire replaced because the self seal bladder came loose and ended up as a big blob of goo rolling around the inside of the tire. It was replaced by Conti. I understand these Conti tires have caused lots of headaches for owners. If you are buying from a dealer then you might want to negotiate a change of tires to another brand. This is the nicest car I have ever owned, but not saying something else will come along in the future like the Challenger!!! I am a Mopar fan. Good luck!
My car goes in at the end of the week for 21K servicing and: 1. To try and fix the left rear window which will not go down on a hot day (though interestingly enough, when it is cool--and does go down--if I just tap the switch so it comes off the hard "closed" position, the window works fine all the time). 2. To address the non-functioning easy exit seat function (the steering wheel, though, does move up and out of the way). The truth is, though, that I really only need the steering wheel movement.
I've also lost the driver's window express up feature a couple of times, but that you can reprogram easily yourself. Philosophically, I guess you have to expect electrical glitches from time to time the more complicated these vehicles get. Or maybe I'm just saying that because I love the car....
The employee discount for EVERYONE goes in effect Saturday. F/GM said they would NOT match this offer. My local Cadillac, Chevrolet, Buick dealer has so many vehicles on its lot that he's looking to rent some space next door. And you think he's not going to complain to GM about not matching Chrysler?
I just got back from the dealer, AutoPark Chrysler Jeep, in Cary,N.C. is great, However Chrysler is not standing behnind the problem it is having with the 300 Limited with the 3.5 HO engine in it. The dealer is replacing my 2005 witt a 2006 and gave me what I paid for it on a trade.
I Chrysler stand behind the product it would be a great car and people would purchase more of them that Toyota's
Whats wrong with that deal. They are giving you msrp for yours toward a '06.With the 06 your getting the 5speed and my 06 3.5 idles perfect.Thats the deal they gave me with my 01 Sebring msrp and pay the differance with what you buy.I think you did well.Good luck.
I also bought a 2006 Heritage Edition in Inferno Red Crystal Pearl. I love everything about the car! It is the best looking version of the 300C ever made. I did not like the SRT-8 ride, and compared to the Heritage Edition, it is stripped. I am considering buying another Heritage Edition since they are such limited production cars. Does anyone lnow if Chrysler is going to build them in 2007? If not, I definitely need to track down my second one now.
