3/4 ton Ext cab SB 4wd LS 4.10 towing,
Indigo Blue/Pewter w/med gray cloth buckets:

I finally got word the truck I ordered on June 18 has been built and shipped Aug 23. The dealer says to allow 2 weeks for delivery to New Mexico. The waiting has been difficult, but now the end is in sight. It will be about 11 weeks total which I'm resonably happy with after hearing the troubles some of you have had. (Hang in there Cindy!) Will keep you posted.

Before I go to pick it up I should decide: Do I buy an extended warranty? What is a good price? Can I pick it up later? Should I buy through the dealer or are there other options? I assume some of the rest of you have been through this. Let me know what your advice is. Thanks,

For what it is worth - I would pass on the extended warranty. The basic coverage is 3/36 with some exceptions/extension - however with the last 7 vehicles I have owned - 4 of them GM products, any major issues have shown up during the warranty time frame. Remember that any other recalls have no statute of limitations, so an extended warranty would not provide extra coverage for that type of situation.

Good Luck and enjoy your new Silverado 3/4 LS !!!

My credit union also offers a good plan. One thing to keep in mind is that the price the dealer quotes is very negotiable. I've had them offer the longer term at the short term price, and a family member recently bought got one for $500 that was originally quoted at $1300+ (special circumstances, they really wanted to get rid of the car).

Don't settle for a 1/2T if you need a 3/4. There are 3/4s out there to be had, they aren't that scarce. The day I ordered mine the dealer had 3 on the lot, one of which I took for a test drive. (it was wonderful!) You can locate one by phone/fax/GM buypower and try to deal on the phone. Some dealers will do it, some won't. I bought mine that way (actually internet then phone). After you drive away in the new truck, then cancel your other order.

Can also be purchased later, even after the factory warranty is up. No need to rush.

I'm getting ready to order a 2000 LS 4x4 extended cab silverado 1500. Have a couple questions. One, if I get a stick shift (I know, everyone thinks I should get the 5.3 auto), are the cupholder on the floor rather than in the dash? Second, what are your thoughts on the fender flair option. Do these look good or just gawdy? Are they the same flairs as on the 2500's? Do they just come in black? If you get a two tone, say idigo and pewter, what color are the fender flares? If I'm not getting the autotrac, are the locking dif worth the money? I'm getting to the hardest part which matters the least, picking the cosmetic options.

    Thanks,

    Dan

This is my first time here, I was just looking for 'road tests' on the 2500 Silverado and noticed the posts on availability. I walked onto a Chevy lot Tuesday and there were 20+ 3/4T LS's on sale for 23,500 and some more that weren't on sale. Also a line of 4X4's. There doesn't seem to be an availability problem in Oklahoma City. So, of course, I bought one.

Has anyone modified their 1999 Silverado to have dual exhaust systems? Did you have them coming out of the side or coming out the back? If so, I would like to find out what advantages or disadvantages if you put in dual exhausts as I am thinking about having it done.

Also, I am thinking about putting in a K&N filter. Any advantages on that one too?

    Thanks in advance.

    I have a 99 5speed 4.8.

I would definately spend the money for the locking diff. Have activated ;o) mine numerous times. Not really used 4wd much, except really deep snow or glare ice.

Cup holders on my vinyl seater are mounted to the front of the center jump seat. Work great for wallets, keys and other stuff when not using as drinkholder.
  • dan33dan33 Member Posts: 13
Between the stick and the cupholders, I suppose the center of the bench seat is more of emergency seating or a spot for the dog? I guess with the decent back seats it would be a rare occasion that I'd need three across the front. Is yours an extended cab? How happy are you with the 4.8 5 speed?

The fender flares are nice i seem em on a few trucks now. I seen them on a 2000 black/charcol grey they had grey flares. They dont stick out to far and arent gawdy at all the fit the truck perfect im telling u im getting em. I found the perfect truck a indigo blue Ls Z71 but im not buying one till next summer :( Instead im going there to pick up my parents new 2000 blazer i guess i could survive driving that for a few months. hahaha. Get the fender flares they are sweet.

    Dan33,

Flares are black as standard. When it's not a two tone..thye are black regardless of what color you get. All the 3/4 2-tones LS's I seen...The flares are painted the same color as the bottom color. You could always get them painted if you did not order a 2-tone. Go back several posts for some pics of my 3/4 with flares.

You can buy those flares to fit the '99 GM 1/2 tons also.

I received my base 1500 Silverado, standard cab, long bed on April 15 after 13 weeks of wait. It was worth it, I love it. I have the 4.8L 5spd and have had no problems. The 34gal tank is great and after several trips to San Antonio from Houston and back, with the AC all the way, I am getting 20.5 mpg. The lowest was during Houston rush hour traffic Monday-Friday with an 18.5 mpg. My average is around 19.5 mpg. My truck is a city truck as you can see but if I had to do it again I purchase the locking diff. I keep spinning the rear wheels in the few times that has rained over here.

I purchased the Grizzly 3 1/2 oval nerf bars and grill. The nerf bars work great. For the nerf bars all you have to do is remove the two screws holding the truck cab to the frame, for each side, with out removing the bushings and bolt the nerf bars. Just make sure when you tighten the bolts to try to return them to the right torque or you will get our famous Chevrolet squeak from all 4 bushings. Stay away from the Grizzly grill guard. I looks good but you have to drill and make too many modifications. It also requires to throw away the $38 dollar tow hooks.
  • RichinKsRichinKs Member Posts: 412
At least with the LT option you can get the flares the color of the truck. In fact I think that is norm for the LT unless you specify different. The dealer printed me off my potential order. Sunset gold and the flares are the same color. .... Rich
  • dan33dan33 Member Posts: 13
How do the flares look in the two tone? Sharp? If I get a solid color truck with black flares, how easy is it to paint the flares? How durable is the paint on that plastic or is it better to leave them black?

Also, how hard is it to keep the blue clean? I'm attracted to the solid pewter because it would stay somewhat cool and appear somewhat clean, but it seems like every other truck is that color. How about charcoal interior vs. gray?

Like I said, the hardest part is picking the cosmetic features! Any help/opinions appreciated.

The bed-liner mat is called "Paint Saver."
    Well, duh...
    Goes underneath your drop-in liner.
    Claims will not absorb water.
About 1/8" thick. Looks like polypropylene, or hdpe. Foam type underliner mat.
Retail at the Leer truck accessory store is $34.95

Anyone have an specific recos on nerf bars? I saw the one for Grizzly. I was thinking of stainless steel, but advice is appreciated.

Also, does anyone know of any corrosion (rust) problems with any particular kind of nerf bars? I live in northern Kentucky and they salt the roads when it snows. I know that certain metals corrode when placed in contact with each other, especially when exposed to salt water. Has anyone had a problem with this? Does it risk voiding the warranty?

Only a reg cab (might trade up when the 4door comes out). Dog weighs 80lb - barely fits the middle seat when travelling with a female. Gonna have to stick to skinny girlfriends.....

Love the 4.8/5spd/4.10Lock combo. Coming off of a F350 CC 7.3L 5 speed 3.55. New truck has more power, but is less stable for towing big loads. Spring rate really low on rear axle, will probably add the airbags like Quad500 did. Right now 1 yd of cinders or 1/2 yd of rock takes me to within 1/2 inch of the rear bump stops. Great brakes and power though.

Wouldn't tow anything more that 5,000 lbs with this combo. Would probably go up to the 3/4 ton for towing above 3 tons.

I have a 1500 4wd with the 4.8/5 speed and love it. I also have the locking diff and find that it worth the money. This truck has more than enough power for me.

I just bought '99'Silverado reg cab 4x4 with a 5.3 and I love the truck except for the oil leak that I noticed at 500 miles. It's at the dealership for the third time. They have been jerking me around, and I told them 3 strikes and you're out.But any how what I would is if anyone has had an oil leak problem with the 5.3.

I have seen one of these Hard Tonneau's installed on a 99 Z71. Anybody out there have one? What do you think of it? Is it completely removable or only a fold-up? I currently have a Roll-N-Lock cover on my 97 Z71. Another option is the Pace Arrow. The Chevy HT list at $240. I understand if ordered with the truck it come in a box and the dealer installs it. I assume the $240 (option E95) includes installation. The three main drawbacks to the Roll-N-Lock is its hotter than Hades to touch the latch in the summer, It cost $850+ installed and the drain hoses need cleaned twice a year. The Pace Arrow has two of those disadvantages but is about half the cost. Any other options for a truck with a fifth wheel? I need a cover I can take with me yet be out of the way while towing. Must be self stowing. ..... I also am looking at the Rino Liner with a 5/8 inch rubber mat on top to keep items from sliding and its easy on the knees. The mat will have cutouts for the fifth wheel hitch. ... About 5-6 weeks away from ordering. Mid November is still the scheduled start date for the forth door. The first 300 will not be available to the public. A 1 December build date still looks optimistic to me, late December more hopeful. Mid January doable. ....... Rich

Want to thank everyone on the past advice regarding the locking dif and fender flares. Have another question: whats the general opinion on the fog lamps. I've never had a vehicle that had them. Do they make a noticable difference in fog and snowing conditions? Are they worth $120? Anyone had durability problems with them being located so low and in that plastic bumper extension thing? All thoughts appreciated.

    Dan
  • rwagonerrwagoner Member Posts: 338
I don't live in a high fog area, so I wouldn't have bought them separate (they came standard on the LT).

My past experience is that they don't do all that much. I understand that aftermarket fog lamps are more powerful at cutting through the fog. On my S-10, the only way they were of any help is when they were on and the headlights were off, which is illegal. On the Silverado you can't turn the headlamps off anyway ...

I am surprised that they cost $120 as an option. I had to have one replaced recently due to a tire tread coming off a semi truck and breaking the fog lamp right off. It was only about $20 as a replacement part. The S-10 one was closer to $100).

FYI: They don't mount to the extension, they just show through. You could remove the extension and the lamps would still be there. They are 100% plastic. They should be mounted low to do their job. High-mounted fog lamps don't do what they should because they cause the glare to go right back into your face.

The tonneau cover that can be ordered with the truck is not the hard cover. The hard cover I find is $677 plus installation. E95 the $240 cover is soft. ...... Rich

Dealership called today, they are going to replace the rear main seal, like I told them to do the first time. Also, they said that it is a regular repair on the chevy V-8.Duhhh,tell me something I don't know. You would think the engine builders would have solved this age long problem. It's probably not as bad as I make it sound. But still,an oil leak in a brand new vehicle, come on.No vibrations or squeaks, just a great looking and running truck with an oil leak. Will know by Tuesday if it is fixed. Will let you know how it goes.Good Luck with yours.
  • kernickkernick Member Posts: 4,072
Any vehicle I have had with foglamps were of minimal improvement in fog. It never helped me see any further. Maybe the advantage is making your vehicle more visible to another driver.
If optional for that kind of money, skip it - unless you really like the look. To me - wasted money and one mre thing to repair.

I have a 99 LT 1500 in Pewter. How do I know if I have a clearcoat on the finish. Are there any opinions on waxes / polishes out there.
    Thanks.
  • rhinncrhinnc Member Posts: 66
The fog lamps on my new Chevy are not very effective, IMHO. However, the ones I had on my non oil leaking, no vibrating, no squeaking F150 4x4 Lariat were much brighter than what is on the Chevy's. I'd probably get them anyway because I like the way they look on the truck.
  • rwagonerrwagoner Member Posts: 338
All paints now have a clearcoat.

Don't use anything abrasive unless you have a finish problem (bird droppings, etc.) Then use a mild polishing compound designed for a clearcoat.

My preference for wax is amazingly outdated, but I like using my orbital polisher with Simonize. It doesn't cause swirls to show even on dark colors and givess a beautiful finish. Unfortunately it makes water bead, and many today think that is a "no no" -- leads to water spotting.

    Richard

PS: Ford still makes trucks? Why do they bother ...

Looked at 1999 Silverado LS, 3/4 ton, Extended Cab,4X4, short box, tow package, 6.0 liter. Only two doors! Dealer says the 3/4 ton extended cabs only come in 2-door versions. Is this True?

Here in Nor California the 3/4 tons are scarce. Lots and lots of extended cab 1/2 tons available (all have three doors). The 1/2 ton 2000's are beginning to show up now but nothing on the 3/4's.

    Thanks in advance.

A few years ago I found myself on a mountain road at night in the thickest fog I've ever experienced. My headlights were pointing high anyway due to a heavy camper and I couldn't even see the stripes immediately in front of the truck. After an hour of creeping at a few mph, I decided to never again own a truck without fog lamps. When I got home put a set of Hellas under the bumper. While I believe the comments about the weak Chevy lights, when push comes to shove ANYTHING can help. Having the light low to the ground illuminates the road stripes and that helps quite a bit. I think the Chevy lamps are overpriced but I ordered them anyway without a second thought.
  • kernickkernick Member Posts: 4,072
Just to clarify - when I said I never found fog lamps very effective on cars I had, I meant original equipment fog lamps. Aftermarket may be more powerful and you can more easily adjust the aim to be effective.
In fog I always keep the highbeams off, as that seems to work best for me.
What is the cost for a set of Hellas and how easy are they to install? Would this cause warranty problems? or do GM dealers sell as an accessory?

I have the fog lamps on my '99 Z71 ext cab. I replaced the bulbs (27.5W) with a brighter one (55W) from AutoZone. The brighter bulbs make a big difference. I agree with Vince4 that having the lights low to the ground helps in fog and rain. The fog lights also help illuminate further to the sides of the vehicle than the regular headlights do. The best fog lights I have ever owned were some 100W lamps that I ordered thru JC Whitney. I don't think they were street legal but I used them anyway.

My 00 Silverado 3/4 has 3 doors and all the 99 3/4's I looked at had 3 doors. It must have been a carry over 99 you looked at..like rich said.

    Rwag....what about those slider pics?

Fog lamps....although I haven't had the chance to use them in actual fog...they are bright and light up the ground pretty darn good.

Isn't it amusing how Ford fans find the new Silverado so appealing that they must enter this catagory?

I'm waiting on my 2000 Silverado Extended Cab Z71 to arrive. Dealer says a couple more weeks. I have a couple of questions I'd sure like some clarification on.
    TIRES:
My truck is coming with 245/75 tires. I am going to change to 285/75 BFG T/A's. How will this effect my speedometer, transmission and ABS brake system? Can this change have any effect on my warranty? I've read in some posts that the dealer can adjust the computer for the tire size change. In a post #5 at topic 947, Dave suggest getting a Hypertech Power Programer to correct for the change. Can someone tell me the bottom line on this? I can't be the only one to change to larger tires.

SYNTHETIC OILS & HD OIL FILTERS:
I read in some previous posts where someone was saying how great their experience with AMSOIL had been. Would using synthetic oil effect my warranty? Does GM reccommend a certain brand of synthetic oil? I understand they use Mobil 1 in the new Corvettes. Anyone have any pros or cons they had concerning synthetic oils?
I'm spending a good amount of $$$ on my new truck and I want to do all I can to keep it running till my son get's it on his 16th birthday (7 years). Thanks for any input on these issues.
  • RichinKsRichinKs Member Posts: 412
Even the 99 c/k's had 3 doors I think. But look at the Edmunds web site. It shows what features the trucks have. A good idea to study to be informed before shopping. ..... Rich

I have read all the liturature etc both from Chevy and on web sites and am a little uncertain about ordering the engine oil cooler for the 3/4 ton. My best guess is there are two trailering options. One for the 1/2 ton includes the transmission oil cooler and one for the 3/4 ton that includes the transmission oil cooler AND engine oil cooler. Any comments? .... Rich

    I got my '99 Z-71 5.3L 3.73 victory red truck in June

i love everything about this truck

i was wondering about the exhaust, i went to a muffler shop and i was asking about flowmaster, he said that flows werent available for the 5.3L

the way i want the exhaust to exit is through the back, i was wondering if anyone had any info about this, and also if it would increase performance and gas mileage

I have a friend who has one of those dreadful fords and he put a K&N filter system(over $250) and it runs alright, but just doesnt seem like it runs like my chevy
we half way clocked my truck in the quarter mile and it was like in alil more than 15 sec so, that aint too bad, hehehe would like to see the 6.0L in a Z-71, that would be awesome

on my truck i have a grill guard, nurf bars, vent visors, bed caps, bed mat, and am thinkin about gettin a bug guard because a dam rock chipped my paint right on the rounded part of the hook, talking about one pissed off person, lol

anyways, anyone have any answers to my exhaust questions would love to hear any sugguestions and comments

I went to mienke to talk about hooking up a dual exhaust system on my Silverado due in Mid-September... He said there would be no problem putting on a set of Flowmasters...

basically they cut off the big GM muffler and put on two smaller flowmasters...
He said there would be a 10-15 hp increase...
    with some extra torque

Just got a 2000 LS Silverado Ext. cab. 1st) Any reason why "service engine" light would come on at 1000 miles....2) Anyone notice any vibration in steering wheel at about 75/80 mph. Also, when pulling lawn mower on small trailer, it vibrated real bad. Tire problem maybe? Does not vibrate as bad when not towing trailer....?
  • vince4vince4 Member Posts: 1,268
kernick, the Hellas I bought were about $65 for a set, clear, 55W. Don't know about mounting on a Chevy, right now I still have a Ford and it had holes in the bumper already so it was easy. I wired the fog lights to be on, off, or come on automatically with the high beams. That way I can use them for extra light to the sides on mountain roads.

richinks, I had a similar question about the engine oil cooler because it wasn't clear that it came with any package, although it is listed as an extra cost option. I ordered a 3/4 with the tow package and found out that definitely it comes with both the trans and engine coolers at no extra cost (over the pkg $).

jed1894, wow, welcome to the infamous vibration. There is an entire topic dedicated to that issue plus much discussion here. Spend some time reading back.
