Oh come on now - you've only had it less than a week. Since you're in the Boston area, all you've had to deal with is 50 degrees and overcast

Correction - it has rained every day except one, since I picked up the car a week ago Monday. Rob M.

the key with ACC is, if it sends hot or cold air, change the vent form from external to internal to internal only or otherway around, iam not sure now. then, it stops the hot/cold air flowing even while turned off.

the reason i was able to figure this out so soon is that the same quirk applies to my 2001 OB which i traded in.

If I have to fiddle with it, then it's not ACC. The system in my Ody is so easy - 68 degrees and full automatic. Never touch it unless the windows need defogging.

i agree it is quirky, but i don;t think it is faulty.

I dumped the original Bridgestone Potenzas after only 1,500 kms. The sidewalls were so stiff that our '05 Outback Limited rode far too roughly. So bad, in fact, that my wife wanted the old '97 Outback back!
We switched to Bridgestone Turanza LS-H tires and could not be happier. The ride is much smoother and the grip in heavy rain is amazing.

Sorry that I have not been following this thread, as I am sure this has been addressed already. Anyhow, I see the Outback is rated to tow 2,700 lbs if memory serves me correctly.

Has anyone had experience towing? My future plans include a Mule or Polaris Ranger type ATV. Add one to a utility trailer and you are looking at about 1,500 lbs. Can an Outback 2.5i with a 5 speed handle that kind of abuse in a steep and hilly area?
  • sdufordsduford Member Posts: 577
Yes it can handle it fine. but expect a lot of clutch wear.

Any new info on the 06 Legacy? Beside the NAV and the 500 units?

    Thanks.

Well, now that we are looking into getting a house, my car purchase has changed, but I do wish for a factory NAV.

    Oh well....

Those incentives still arent too troubling, given the kind of cash that Honda is giving its dealership network, for example on the Accord, and that Toyota is offering to consumers.

All right - I'll take the bait.

Honda is offering dealer cash in a stair step program that could work out to about $1K per unit. Carman here at Edmunds thinks it'll actually be about $500 per unit because rebate step levels are pretty high.

Subaru is offering $1,500 to $2,000 - no goals need to be met.

Honda is doing it to increase sales on a 300K+ volume line. Subaru is doing it to increase sales on a less than 100K line.

Honda is quietly giving it to dealers to allow them to deal as they want. Subaru is advertising it right to the consumer.

The last one flies in the face of Subaru's stated goal of not having to resort to screamer ads and below cost distress sales. NOT THAT SUBARU IS IN DISTRESS!!

IMHO, Honda is doing it in a way to maintain resale value and profitability for them and for the dealers. Yes their rebate becomes common knowledge but they aren't advertising it.

    Your opinion may vary.

Yes their rebate becomes common knowledge but they aren't advertising it

I agree completely.. Honda preserves their resale by doing it behind the scenes.. Plus, I doubt it is even "common knowledge".. It is likely that fewer than 1% of Accord shoppers have any clue about it.. Even newbies that log on here, don't seem to read further back than one page...

i disagree. even if honda does it quietly through dealers, dealers will have to advertise low prices to consumers, which will then bring the resale down

subaru is more straight forward as it has loyal customer base that appreciates this.
  • kyfdxkyfdx Moderator Posts: 265,565
Well.. If Subaru has to depend on their loyal customer base, then they are never going to grow...

I've got the local paper right in front of me, and not one Honda dealer has the price of an Accord advertised, except for the MSRP in the lease offer fine print..

The Subaru dealer lists MSRP, discount from MSRP, customer rebate, and selling price...

I think it is pretty well documented that Honda isn't having any trouble keeping their re-sale values high.

I prefer dealer incentives only because in the state of MD you won't pay sales tax on that amount.

The amounts are similar if you look at a % of the MSRP. I heard Honda had $900-1200 per unit, Subaru has $1000-1500 if I read that correctly.

Where'd you get $2 grand? :confuse:

How does the $1500 cashback relate to the TMV quotes on edmunds?

ie, if i spec out a 2.5i LTD for $24,500 TMV, does that mean that I could tack on an additional $1500, dropping it to $23,000, or is the cashback already built into the TMV value?

    confused...
  • kyfdxkyfdx Moderator Posts: 265,565
Takes into account dealer incentives, but not customer rebates...

So, if it is a customer rebate, subtract it from TMV..

But, I don't follow TMV much... It is historical, so it is always going to be behind, and never keeps up with just announced dealer incentives, etc.. Plus, it is an average of actual prices paid.. I want a lot better deal than average.

You'll have better luck sifting through the Prices Paid boards...

Ah heck. Forget TMV. Start @ Invoice, subtract the $1500 customer rebate and make your first and only offer $1500 under invoice. They'll squirm about "not making any money", but they've got the dealer holdback of 3% or so, plus quarterly Subie bonuses etc.

yes, this is exactly what i did on my OB XT Ltd. The key is to be firm on your price, if you keep bumping up your price, your weakness is exposused. Do the math & ask for 1 price.

Also, when pricing, add all accessories, extended warranty, tags, tax, title, doc fee etc. then, negotiate. so, you are negotiating pricing on all (but tag, title, tax).
  • rob_mrob_m Member Posts: 820
TMV is just an average. For the one person who paid sticker, one person paid invoice.

I started below invoice, negotiated the price of the car, and at the same time got the best price for my trade. Then I added the rebate and low financing rate. I gave the dealer the processing fee because I am so flexible. I came within $200 of my target price, and my calculated monthly payment was $3/month less than I predicted.

Krisshna is correct. Get the figures and stick to them. The first dealer I approached was throwing out all sorts of numbers and they were changing them all the time. The second dealer had a printout with everything broken out. Negotiation was very easy, and we both knew where we stood. I kept saying no, and they didn't want me to leave.

I bought on a Sunday afternoon. It was raining. This was the 5th weekend in a row it had rained. It was nearing the end of the month. They had the car I wanted in stock. I think the planets were aligned on that day. Timing is everything! Rob M.

So is the speculation that there is a dealer incentive of 1k-1.5k in addition to the customer rebate?
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
    So I was asking.

Usually when there are dealer and customer incentives, it's regional, and you get one or the other, not both (usually).

same here, because of 3 weekends of rain, they were desparate to sell. i got mine at 4.5k below MSRP of 32.5k.
  • sesquipedsesquiped Member Posts: 10
Gotcha. Be nice to know. Could be a buyer this weekend. Based on the numbers, it will either be the LL Bean Outback or the Legacy GT (not the limited) depending largely on whether we can get comfortable that the turbo fours can perform (accelerate into a merge) as well as the H6.

If not, we might wait for the cloth H6's in 2006, which is probably what we really want. I think the mazda we were looking at is probably no more. Unsure about the Mazda (ford) reliability, and I think we want AWD.

They'll have a MazdaSpeed version of the 6 in the fall, if they ever work out the bugs. That'll have a 2.3T and AWD, plus a 6 speed manual. It'll cost more than the Legacy GT, though.

Is any one having problems with their security upgrade. It is located under the passenger front seat. I took my 2005 Outback Ltd to the dealer because I could not get the alarm to go off. The Dealer changed the sensitivity but that did not work. They replaced it and it still does not work.
To test system sit in driver's seat , arm alarm , then stike the steering wheel and it should set the alarm off. I would expect a recall on this soon.

Might as well, hand over the keys to the thief....

I think info like that is really not necessary to post. I know, if they want your car they'll take it no matter what. But, like my parents always say, voluntary information is too much information ;)

    What is trolling?

    Bob W
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
A troll is someone that is there for only one reason - to offend and insult others. Typical behavior might include:

    * hit and run tactics (they disappear)
    * rude behavior
    * extreme bias for or against a car or brand
    * masked identity (no name, bogus e-mail)

Edmunds does a pretty good job getting rid of them.

I may purchase a 2005 Legacy GT Limited Sedan in the next few months. Looking for any comments regarding the following:

Good or bad points for the car from those who have owned for some time, particularly relative to warm weather climates (I live in Southern Nevada).

A/C performance in very hot weather (100+)

Experience with the Beige vs. Grey interior leather colors as to wear and ability to keep clean.

Performance and turbo lag, if any with the Automatic transmission.

    MPG in your experience.

Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks.
  • kenskens Member Posts: 5,869
I've been driving a 2005 Legacy GT Ltd wagon now for almost a year in Northern California. While it's not hot year round here, there have been several weeks of 90+ degree weather last year.

    A/C Performance:
I personally have found the A/C to be quite effective on the 05 Legacy GT. It cools quickly and the highest fan setting is quite powerful.

    Interior:
I have the dark grey interior and it's held up very well. I've also read reports from other owners with the beige and it seems to do fine. My LGT wagon is silver and I've found that the leather never gets blistering hot even after being parked all day in the sun.

    5EAT Performance:
Relative to the manual transmission, there is some lag but not bad at all for an engine running 13.5psi of boost. The 5EAT is adaptive so it takes about 2000 miles of driving for it to fully learn your driving habits. Compared to when I first took delivery, the 5EAT is very responsive whether in normal or Sport mode. If you test drive a new Legacy GT, keep in mind that the transmission is probably "green" and hasn't had the benefit of breaking in yet.

As a former manual driver, the 5EAT is great. Of course, you sacrifice some of the connected feeling of a manual tranny, but it's responsive shifts and manual mode keep the smile on my face. The 5EAT is about as good as auto transmissions get -- it's shifts are smooth and quick. I'd be hard pressed to find a better transmission in any car in our price range.

    MPG:
Average about 22-23mpg with mostly highway miles driving at about 80mph. City only driving brings it down to about 19mpg. Best tank (100% freeway) was 26mpg.

Let me know if you have any more specific questions.

    Ken
  • rob_mrob_m Member Posts: 820
I've only had my LGT LTD for 3 weeks. I'm still adjusting from my 99 GT LTD with 165hp and 125k on the odometer.

A/C seems to work quite well. It's been in the 90's this week. At 72 degrees, I'm cold.

I went with the Altantic Blue and Black combo. I was set on the taupe interior, but once seeing the two side by side, I thought the black was much classier looking. I did not like the plood (plastic wood) accent paired with the taupe.

I really haven't felt the turbo lag. Sport mode changes the shift pattern, and keeps the turbo spooled up for quicker response. The car always feels that it wants to go.

MPG - 23 with 90% highway driving on the last 3 tanks of gas.

    Hope this helps. Rob M.

I've got a bit of a silly question perhaps, but I'm wondering what people have used to clean the dashes on their 2005s. Unlike with my old '96 Legacy, my 2005 Outback XTL's dash has a very textured feel, and in a way the surface looks as if it's semi-permeable. As a result, I'm a little hesitant to use something like Vinylex or Armor-all on it, as I fear it could leave it looking awful (and it might not hold up to heavy rubbing to remove any excess). Up until now I've just been using Grab-it dust wipes to dust off the dash, but some odd white streaks have appeared on the dash recently. I think one such streak was present when I got the car in August, but it never bothered me. Perhaps the OCD problem is worse these days.

The car doesn't get a lot of sun (live in Portland, OR, and it's under cover during most days), so I don't think it's UV damage already. I never did anything to the dash on the '96, and it was fine.

    Thanks for any advice!

The dealer mentioned they will be selling off their demo car, which has about 3000 miles on it. Is this a good thing to buy? If so, what kind of discount would you be looking for?

I think Saturday is decision day for the Outback vs Legacy GT decision. I'll let you folks know what we got.
