I'll start with Autotrac - after driving a demo 1999 on my snowy secret racetrack last winter, almost decided to upgrade to the autotrac - It worked wonderful, engaged within about 1/4 sec of slip, when playing rally truck, the rear end would drift out slightly then the transfer case would engage and I would accelerate around the turn with the tail hanging out slightly, in reg 4x4 mode the truck would understeer a little more. Ended up with a regular trans case as I was too cheap to pay for the upgraded trim and go auto-tranny and.... As far as quality of my 1999 truck, am absolutely happy, had the ping problem related to the early 1999 software, new software and running 89 octane has cured the problem. Had a rear diff pinion seal go twice in the first month, repaired and no problems since. Power in my 4.8 is phenominal (spelling?). Live at 7,000' elevation, power on all non turbo motors is down about 20%. Power is still great, was raining this morning, got on the throttle hard coming out of the gas station, lit up both (locker engaged) tires and spilled my morning MtDew in my lap as I had to initiate a big counter steer. For everyday car type driving, the V-6 is probably plenty. The old 4.9 ford I-6 used to run those F150's around for 250,000 miles when properly cared for.
PS. Love the brakes, got studded tires on order, will let you all know how the "rally truck" does this winter with 4 studdies....
Ordered my '00 1500 LS 4x4, Auto-Trac, Firm Ride Suspension with the numerous bells and whistles on 8/16/99 - was told yesterday that it is being built this week, and I should expect delivery by 10/8.
I test drove a few and fell in love. My wife laughs at me each time we pass a Chevrolet dealer and I exclaim - we just passed "The Truck".
Can't wait for delivery and to begin enjoying the new vehicle. I believe all to often people use this forum for negative comments - and don't focus on the positive aspects of the vehicle.
I find it hard to believe that the Silverado would be voted "Truck of the Year" if the bad outweighed the good (and if Ford and Dodge had better products).
I picked up my 2000 Silverado LS 2500 ext. cab last Wednesday, and after reading through the owners manual, and chcking everything out, I discovered the tire pressure was 45 PSI all around in the Firestone Steeltex 245X75R16 tires I ordered specially. The owners manual says check the tire decal on the drivers door for inflation pressures. My label says Front 50 PSI and Rear 80 PSI. Has anyone else noticed this? Anyway I set the pressures accordingly and the only difference I noticed is the gas mileage went up to 19 MPG from 17 MPG on it with the Vortec 6000. One other note, Kelley Blue Book says the Vortec 6000 in 2000 puts out 325 HP not 300 HP. Does anyone know anything about this?
Not too much longer, huh? I agree that Edmunds is the place to post truck problems, I am willing to bet that every manufacturer is facing the same problem, we are just hearing about it more, here!
Pretty soon you can take that picture out of your wallet and replace it with the real thing. "Aint nothing like the real thing baby..."
The 50/80 tire pressure is for a 2500 and lets the tires carry the full load (8600lbs). For driving around empty or lightly loaded you can run much less pressure. Notice the 1500 can carry 6400lbs on the same size tire with 40 psi. You can run 40-45psi an get a much nicer ride.
The mileage increase is probably due to more miles on the truck. My truck has much more power after 10,000 miles than it did before.
Take my word for it, you will not like driving around with 80 lbs in your tires unloaded. As Mike stated, you inflate to carry the maximum load. Unloaded stay with the lower pressure. I ran between 45 and 50 lbs in my F-250 most of the time.
Has anyone else had problems with the locking differential? I was planning on ordering that on my new 2000. Is this a good investment or not? I'm not a mechanic so I could use some help on this one? Paul
Thank you all for the positive remarks on the truck you have reassured my faith in this truck. I just won a case with the Lemon Law involving a Dodge Dakota (instead of MOPAR it should be NOPOWER) and I really don't want to go thru the "experience" again. I figure I pay the big bucks I receive a nice truck. I also received the order number (only waited two weeks) and they have a tenitive build date of 10/11. Can't wait.
Wow i thought i was the only one with a pic of the truck in my wallet hahaha. Well mine will only be in there only 8 months more then im going for it. I went to tyhe dealership today (shopping for dogg food thought id stop) they had 12 pewter trucks and 4 black ones. HMMMMM wheres all the other colors? Has anyone seen a 2000 Indigo blue with black fender flares????? Let me know if u have and how they look i really want those i like how they look but havent seen them on a blue one yet. Thanks alot
Paul- I was going to get the locking diff, but did not. reason being; I have auto-trac, if you think about it auto-trac somewhat replaces what the "locking" (limited slip) diff and what it will do. the only instance I would need the limited slip would be in the snow, but with auto-trac, just push the button and go; no need for locking diff. Also, no vibration what so ever at any speed.
Just had a Line-X spray in liner put in today. looks great, very clean. will see how it does in the long run.
As for the tranny! Still shifting weird, and clunking. Been to two dealers, both say there is definately a problem, but the truck is so new there aren't bulletins or codes to fix yet. One dealer actually told me the tranny different than the '99 models, I thought the only change was the cam in the motor. does any body know about this? Truck goes back tommorrow to other dealer to have it looked at again. We'll see!
As I've said before...My 3/4 came with 40 PSI all around. Door says 50/80....which is harsh on the rear end when hitting good bumps. I filled them to 50/80 when hauling last weekend...left he rear at 80 all week...and finally put them back to 50 all around. I've been toying between 50 and 45 for a while. Wondering if i should go to 40? I don't want to go too low...because 6 ply tires like these can have the same effect as a flat tire on the sidewall if you go too low. But what is too low? I contacted a guy at firestone...he could only tell me to have the dealer check the wear pattern and determine what it should be. yeah right...like the dealer will know squat. I think 40 is the low end for these tires.
My truck is indigo blue with the black fender flares. Looks awesome. it was the only color truck I would have gotten. Medium grey leather interior goes just perfect. love the combination. If you can find a 3/4 indigo blue, they look identical
If you are ordering a 4x4 with the auto-trac, you don't need it because if the wheels start to slip the 4x4 kicks in. If you are a good ole rear wheel drive person like me you'll order it anyway! I like swinging the rear end around when I want. Mine just came in today - yeehaa!
Reply to 847 - Dan, I can go u one better. I ordered 10/5/98 and kept getting delayed because of Ride control option not being available. Order got dropped in June and had to reorder. Was told that ride control still not available so dropped it and ordered an LT which has firm ride. My current build date is 10/4/99. I had a 1% over invoice order for the 99 but I am being told that because they messed over me so much and I hung in there for a year they were going to do me $1000 below invoice. I'll believe it when I see it, but if that happens, it'll be a good deal.
Run the fronts close to door sticker recommendation, maybe up to 5 to 10 lbs lower if empty.
Set the rear pressure depending on load. Look for the same amount of buldge. If you are running empty, probably around 40 for the rear. Did this on my F350 for 170,000 miles and had great tire wear and grip.
If you run the rears too high, the truck will be skitterish at speed and will tend to oversteer badly along with wearing out the center of the tire too early.
Reply to 846 - Dan, I can go u one better. I ordered 10/5/98 and kept getting delayed because of Ride control option not being available. Order got dropped in June and had to reorder. I have over 2800 miles on my 1500 4x4 LS Ext Cab Lock Diff and absolutely love it. No ride problems at all. Just some cosmetic problems like the chatter that started after adding bugshield, and the third door hitting the striker a little hard. Am taking it to dealer tommorrow to have these looked at.
I got all Black LT 3/4 this time....If you can't get 2 tone I'll go with Indigo next time...if I can get 2 tone in an LT...I'd take Carmine with Gold.
Even with the rears at 45...the outside of the tread looks as if it is not touching much at all. I'll have to try 40 again. At 80 with the pallet of bricks (2900 lbs)...the entire tread was wearing. 80 empty...at least an inch on both sides appears to be hardly touching.
Keep in mind temperature also effects this stuff. Cold means in the morning or traveling 1 mile max before the tires heat up and the increase in pressure. As the weather gets cold...you need to check them often. Last weekend it was about mid 70's and I put them at 50/80. This morning i went to let them out a bit..(weather was about 45 degrees) Fronts had dropped from 50 to 47...rears had gone from 80 -70!! Heck yeah temp makes a difference.
I've never payed attention to MPG while fooling aroud with this. I can take 50 all around...but the rear does not seem to be wearing correctly. maybe i should try 50 front as called for...and 40 rear?...anybody try that? A 8 foot bed would probably wear better....but that be toooo long.
Is your truck the 2500 or 1500? I want the 1500 indigo blue Z71 ext cab. ALso do u have any pics of it that u can send? Id like to see what it looks like only 1500 ive seen with fender flares was black. I kinda like the graphite interior better just got a 2000 blazer with it but i havent decided on interior color yet. Thanks alot let me know about the pics and if u have the 1500 or 2500.
I AM CONSIDERING BUYING A NEW SILVERADO AND I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW ALL THE MAJOR PROBLEMS THAT THEY HAVE BEFORE I BUY . ALL HELP IS GREATLY APPRECIATED THANKS LARRY
in response to #888. my truck is a 1500 x-cab, LT, z-71, indigo blue, medium grey leather. I actually drove this exact truck but with the graphite interior, liked them both, either way they both look awesome. I went with medium grey because it matches the boat better (navy blue and charcoal grey) call it corney, but hey it works! As for pictures I don't have a scanner so I can't send any to you. Good luck on seeing one.
I ordered my 2000 Ext Cab, LS, 2WD, w/Locking Dif., 4.8 V-8, Automatic with a few small upgrades, such as bucket seats, aluminum wheels and fog lamps...I won't tell you how little it is going to cost...got the GM family discount and here in TN, military is tax exempt. The deal was just too good to pass up!! My fear is about what appears to be a vibration problem in the locking diff(3.42) at high speeds (over 60mph) and the daunting ordering process. I ordered my truck on 9 Sep 99, I have an order number but no confirmed build date, just expected early to mid Oct. Is there a number out there to get updates on your order other than hassling the dealer? Does the 2000 LS model come with the auto-dimming rear-view mirror and compass as stated by Edmunds but listed as an option in the 2000 Silverado brochure? Lastly, any comments on the Oak "Cloth" interior with the indigo blue exterior? My dealer thought it was a strange combination!! Thanks, in advance, for all responses, I'm sure they will give me more things to consider.
I have seen the medium oak and indigo blue combination. It is great. Your dealer has no taste for style.
I can't tell you what to do, but if it was me, I'd think about getting a 4x4 for its one piece drive shaft and recirculating ball steering gear, and 3.73 or 4.10 axle. Good luck!
99 5.3 ext 2wd LS sb 3.42 dif. / vibrations and shakes cured on 9/9 since trying to get a solution since 6/2. new rear springs, shackles, 5 tire changes, front shocks replaced ( after falling off ), countless wheel balances ( after wheel weights kept falling off ), new head rest, ( to replace the one that fell apart ) and rear glass that has been resealed. The rear end sits up a bit higher which is no biggie, the city ride is m u c h better, but now on the hwy. the ride is choppy empty and when full. ......Here we go again, haggle haggle haggle, dealer service dept. are slobs at fixing anything.
But it is a looker....{ indigo blue/pewter - pewter pin stripe - indigo cloth bench - drk tint - pwr seats - spray in liner / diamond plate over rail tool box - class III hitch - vent shades - bug shields - diamond plate licence plate frames - chrome bow tie logo plate on the front bumper. Framed in diamond plate of course. Now if I can get that stainless nerf bar with the diamond plate steps,...,
ok , after reading about 898 posts, ill tell my story. i ordered my truck on august 23, and just got a build date of oct. 11. truck is 2000 gmc 3/4 ton, reg cab, long bed, 4x4, black with grey interior, 4.10. locker. auto-trac, fully loaded.ohh yeah. exactly like my 86 camper special(for sale by the way). I cant wait! it should be here by nov. if everything goes as planned. purchased it for $500 over invoice, and the dealer is the best in norhtern california.i hope i dont have any of the problems that ive read about. by the way, does anyone know how to put a digital picture on the internet? i would like to show you all the baddest looking truck ever manufactured at gm. i got this $1300 sony digital camcorder with a photo function but dont know how to use it! i guess i could read that manual a little more carefull. well nuf' said.
Got my Silverado Ext Cab LS, 5.3L, SB, Hvy Duty Susp, Locking Differential, Towing Package. Looks great, rides great, not been back to the dealer yet. Great power, and handling, slow speed or highway speed. Gas mileage about 15 in town. Had it 3 weeks, with no problems.
I've been reading these posts for a while. As a long time Chevy pickup fan,('90 - '94 - '97) all X-Cabs, all NO MAJOR PROBLEMS, and a great dealer, took the plunge and took delivery of a Med gray/light gray interior Y2K LT.
Everytime I do this, I go and drive all the others. Even tried a Tundra. No contest. Did I mention the dealer's service dept? Have a problem, make an appointment, get a loaner, pick up vehicle fixed, no returns, no hassle. Most service visits were for required maintenance ( oil, tire rotate etc...)
(If you ignore the advertising hype, the adolescent 'brand x drools, my brand rules' nonsense and choose based on what fits YOUR needs and desires, whatever ride you choose will be the best.)
IMHO: Chevrolet does need to lose the 'Like a Rock campaign' After driving the LT, it should be more like 'Chevy Rocks' :-)
Hey kszabo, in post #866 you said you are getting 17 to 19 mpg with the 6L engine. That's way beyond what I've read in any post. There is a topic dedicated to that topic and people are reporting from 13 to 15 with no load. Are you sure of your numbers? Was that all downhill freeway or something? Of course it's great news to me (6L on order) but 19mpg?
"As for the tranny! Still shifting weird, and clunking. Been to two dealers, both say there isdefinately a problem"
Your truck may be doing it worse than normal and may be cause for concern in your truck, but I have the same thing in my 99 Silverado 4X4 since new. Clunk going into reverse and sometimes a clunk when downshifting if the engine and tranny are still cold (not at running temp). I think it is just an inherent characterstic of the new design and I don't consider mine to be a problem. I can't see where it would cause a performance or longevity problem at all. I know there have been some reports of tranny problems in the GM truck lines, but I have to say that GM has had much fewer tranny problems than the competition, especially Dodge/Chrysler products. GM has always had a good strong tranny ever since the turbo 400's back in the late 70's or early 80's (not exactly sure when the turbo 400 originated).
My point being is that I think this clunk is happening in all the new model Silverado's to some degree and I don't think it is cause for concern. Now, then again, I dont' know the extent that your truck is doing this. It may be considerably worse than normal, but they all are doing it to some degree.
Good luck. Overall, even with a few problems I have had, this has been the best truck I have owned in over 15 years. I have driven Ford trucks in the 1/2 ton catagory for the last 15 years. Ask me about all the problems I had with the 98 Ford I owned, primarily the transmission and transfer case grind that was never fixed. Needless to say, I only had that truck 4 months and I traded, losing my butt financially, to the new model Silverado. I am very happy with my decision!
I commute 55 miles rondtrip a day from 8600 ft to 5900 ft and back to 8600 ft above sea level in Colorado. It is all highway driving. Rear tires are at 80 PSI, but I will be dropping them to 50 PSI and will see if mileage drops. It is a 2000 delivered a couple of weeks ago, so I think it is running the new software. Also it has a 3.73 locking differential, and skid plates (maybe more aero-dynamic underneath).
Have had my '00 ext. cab Z71 lock diff for 1 week (400 miles) and there is a noticeable upshift at 10 and 20 mph and a noticeable downshift at 10 mph. Like zbad71, I'm not sure that I'm ready to consider this as a problem. It's not silky smooth, but that tranny is pushing a lot of truck down the road. I've also noticed a very, very light ping during acceleration. I think that the dealer's free tank of gas wasn't the best, and I'm running 89 octane through it to see if it goes away. Otherwise, a great ride. I'm really happy with this purchase. Will post again if I have other problems.
SHAMPTON: I got mine from the same dealer - but off the lot, I'm sure they did not cancel my order. Actually, they had no allocation, so I don't know what they did with my order, GM kept rejecting it anyway. Yes, I got a 2500. I test drove both 1/2 ton and 3/4, you can definitely feel the difference in the ride. The 3/4 ton was a heavier-sturdy-solid feel. The 1/2 ton was not light by any means-it felt great, but when you get in one and right into the other, you can tell (I almost opted for a 1/2 ton when my order kept getting rejected). Besides, we the few, with the 2500's, have alot more gas to buy. Had a 1/4 tank left yesterday, with my SB and its 26 gal. tank, it was $30. Never tried to see how much it would hold from empty. You definitely can see the fuel gauge moving (just about).
TIM: All 4 tires are at 40psi. I kept thinking, maybe that's too low, considering the door said 50/80. I have decided to keep them all at 45/45, until we load it up. What do you think? Should I leave it alone? I don't know. Too much information is crazy sometimes, huh?
I AM SCANNING MY PICTURE IN A FEW MINUTES HERE, HOW DO I UPLOAD THEM SO YOU COULD ALL SEE IT?
BILLM44: Indigo with oak cloth sounds awesome. Good choice!!
Wouldn't it be nice if we started posting good stuff about our trucks so people who are trying to make a decision can feel better?
Since there are so many postings about tire pressure, I'll relate some of the things I remember reading, and/or would suspect - though I'm no stuntdriver.
As you increase the tire pressure you basically are making the tire more circular, with less contact to the ground.
That'll decrease the amount of rubber that "rubs" against the asphalt - less friction; that means less resistance to rolling, thus better mpg. As most things in life, there is a good and bad to actions.
This decrease is surface contact and friction means there's less to stop. Increased distances. Without ABS I think this would cause lockup easier. With ABS, it would cause the ABS to kickin more. On snow and ice you definitely want as much surface area as you can reasonably get.
Also less surface area at a higher pressure will cause more burnouts, when you accelerate. That's not necessarily the fastest acceleration, and surely is the best way to get new tires.
I will not comment much on ride, but I think it would be very similar to putting more air in a basketball - more bounce.
Even at 40 in the rear...the outside tread seems to not be getting enough contact with the ground. I don't want to go lower than 40...as it may damage the sidewall of these type of tires. 50 in the front seems fine for wear and ride. So it's 50 front..40 rear for now. then up to 80 rear when I haul.
I'll have to see what the extra weight from liner/running boards/skins/and rails does to the rear. If i can add a couple hundee in the lbs...I think that will do the trick?
I guess with the 3.73 and 5 speed you have the best mileage configuration possible. That's still great mileage for a big V8 at altitude. Mine will have auto and 4.10 so I don't expect to be so lucky. But I do expect it to go zoooooom!

Way to go.
The mileage increase is probably due to more miles on the truck. My truck has much more power after 10,000 miles than it did before.
Mike
I forget - did your dealer order come through, or did you give him the heave ho - and pick one off of another dealer's lot?
You ordered a 2500 correct? So where are the pictures?
You are right about the wallet picture - it's all I have had to keep me sane - and it's only been 6 weeks!
Take care,
Bill

My truck is the same except it is a Black GMC and I got the sport/step side instead of the wide side.

I'll have to see what the extra weight from liner/running boards/skins/and rails does to the rear. If i can add a couple hundee in the lbs...I think that will do the trick?
We will see.
