I cannot wait. I love it when my predictions come true. Though a big part of the country is already benefiting from sub $2 gas. I don't think we have caught up with refinery capacity on diesel. I doubt the demand dropped as much as it did for gas. Trucks kept delivering goods. Though construction use is way down, at least here in CA.
$2 is cheap enough. Having it at $1.50 means people will have justified rationalizations for wasting gas.
I remember when gas prices first hit $1.50 and started staying there, around these parts. It was late 1999, just after I bought my 2000 Intrepid. As I recall, my first fillup of that car was $1.39/gal (don't ask me why that figure sticks in my head), and it quickly went to around $1.50 soon after, and by the summer of 2000 was pushing $2.00.
So if gas stays around $2.00/gal, when it was $1.50/gal 9 years ago, I'd consider that reasonable. A 33% increase over 9 years is probably only around 3% annually, once you account for compounding.
I remember people complaining about that $1.50 per gallon way back then, though, because we had gotten used to it hovering around $1.00-1.10 for so long!
That should be a nice gathering, with all the family.
I'm not sure if our fuel prices will be in the $2 or sub-$2 range anytime soon but $2.20 is really nice. I just wish I would've waited to fill the Olds up until now; paid $2.65/gal a couple of weeks - which still is a heck of a lot better than what I paid the last time I filled it up in September.
I thought about how it was $.75 when I got my first car. What do the Saudi's need to have an emergency meeting with other OPEC nations about? Gas is still $2.59 in Northern Palm Beach County, Fl. When I left there in 1993, RUG was $1.30 there and $1.15 in Indy, and then it hit $1.53 in 1999. $2 is a fair price today if $1.53 was OK back in Clinton Days. It depends on how much $1.53 hurt back then. If you paid $153k for a house in 1999, wouldn't you want to get $200k for it today?
We are knocking on the $2 door here in San Diego. Best price today is $2.09. Diesel is not coming down as fast as Regular. It is still in the $2.59 region.
The station I pass on my way to work, one of the higher priced ones around here has officially dropped under the $2 mark - $1.99.
Filled the van last night for $1.93. Would have been $1.85 cash but I still get a better deal with the rebate on the credit card even though that is no longer the slam dunk it used to be. The Ody was low enough that the fuel light was on and even then they just barely squeezed $30 worth in.

$1.879 for 87 octane at a Shell station up the road. Chevron next door was the same price. I was able to fill up my Intrepid for $29.90, and it was close to sucking fumes! It has a 17 gallon tank, and it took 15.9 gallons to fill up.
I checked my records, and the last time gasoline went in my Intrepid for less than $2.00 per gallon was May 30, 2005. And that time it was $1.899. The most I ever paid was $4.039, back in June and July of this year. The cheapest was $0.979, back in late December 2001.
I almost don't believe it. One area station has RUG for $1.95. I haven't seen it this low since summer 2005.
Here in NY where they tax us on everything I can't believe they are allowing this. Any day I expect our governor to slap an extra buck on each gallon to balance his budget. All the liberals and greenies will hold hands and say it's to save the planet.
And anyone who can still afford the gas will move south.

Virginia tax on gas is 19.6 cents while Ohio is 28 cents. I thought maybe we were cheaper because of lower gas tax for state port. But yours is lower tax.
I realize that here in Happy Valley we're sort of isolated and in a bubble, but while gas prices are crumbling all around us, we're holding steady at $2.17.
90 minutes away in Carlisle people are reporting $1.76 :surprise:
Last night on my way home from work, I noticed the local Shell in Seabrook, Maryland was down to $2.119 per gallon for 87. The Citgo in Glenn Dale, also on my way home, was at $1.999!
My roommate, who works out in Annapolis, was able to fill up for $1.819. He was pleasantly shocked that it was only $28 to fill up his Xterra.
One thing that'll be nice, is that I'll be able to fill up my '67 Catalina in one sitting again. The last time I did it, a couple months ago, the pump shut off at $75!
I think it would have been redundant back in the day when leaded gas was still available, and you would specify "regular" or "unleaded". I don't remember anyone ever saying "leaded".
But then today, I guess it's used to differentiate the octane ratings...regular unleaded, mid-grade unleaded, or premium/hi-test unleaded?
First is a MARATHON and two Speedways (subsidiary of same). The $1.46 is a station that's often int he first 3 to go lower because they're in a high traffic and competitve area.
!!!! $1.46 !!!!
Excuse my excitement. And I have two full tanks of gas so I can't go fill up!!! Dern.
I saw a news story that AAA has declared $1.98 the nationwide average.
I feel sorry for larsb, but he did admit it's going opposite of what he wished only a few months back. I have to admit I'm stunned that it's doing this and he's turning out to lose his wish.
I also admit I'm concerned about other fuels and methods of transportation being pursued just as much as when gas was $3.75 for our future good in agreement with larsb's actually wishes.
Amazing, so much so that I looked at my spreadsheets going back to Feb. 2004, and the lowest I paid was $1.50 on 3/1/04.
Now I have paper records at home going back further, and obviously the price was lower earlier in the decade, but still, when you consider I paid a record high $3.91 just in June of this year (never quite made it to $4.00), this record drop is unbelievable. Even Gary's prediction of $40.00 for a barrel of oil, seemingly so out of reach just a few months ago, is within the realm of possibility.
But this won't last forever, and we still need to get hopping on alternative fuels (not corn-based ethanol though).
Haven't been out yet today (darn changed habits) but I'm guessing our local price is still holding at $2.07 because it's a Penn State football weekend. In the past we've been known to see slight bumps in the price on these weekends. Couldn't be that the influx of 100,000 people and their vehicles has anything to do with that could it?
Amazing, so much so that I looked at my spreadsheets going back to Feb. 2004, and the lowest I paid was $1.50 on 3/1/04.
That sounds about right, for these parts too. I remember the summer of 2004, gas shot up to over $2.00 per gallon in these parts, and as I recall it didn't really come down a whole lot that fall/winter. Going through my paper records, I did see around $1.89 back in May 2005, and that was the last time it was below $2.00...until this week.
Slowly but surely, I've been trying to enter my Intrepid's fuel history onto an Excel spreadsheet. So far I've only gone backwards through to late 2006. I know those early years are going to be tedious, especially back when I used to deliver pizzas and sometimes I'd fill up every other day.
I remember the first time I filled that car up, in November 1999, it was around $1.39 per gallon. And briefly in late 2001/early 2002 it dipped below $1.00
Just topped the Sequoia at Costco. $1.95 per gallon. Then driving home I passed an indy selling gas for $1.84. How can that be with out high CA taxes? Diesel is not keeping pace. Most places selling D2 at $2.49 with a few at $2.43. That is the biggest gap percentage wise we have had.
Yeah, living at the shore with our main drag being the only way to hit 18 miles of beach I've seen that selective price adjustment in action. not this time of year though. to everything there is a season....
I had a nice moment at lunch. I had let the car get down to where the fuel light lit up. The only place I could hit on lunch hour and still have lunch is that one station between my home and work. It was $1.89. I thought that was so last week and only put $10 worth in!

Not as low as Dayton, but close. Looks like MO and OK have the lowest prices in the US (statewide), according to Gas Buddy.

Now we just have to hope for a little rational thinking about the cost vs benefit of boondoggles like ethanol.
Oh, and how about a little bit of expoloration and drilling to find our own reserves and KEEP the downward pressure on oil while we're at it.
Hmm... this might make a good Dear Santa letter...
