The VOPC finally locked me to a build date week of January 10,2000, with an estimated delivery date of January 24,2000. If the truck is on schedule it will have taken 18 weeks from conformation to delivery. The 4x4 and V10 combination is the dealers reason for the long waiting time. I still don't understand allocation!!! Anyone out there who is getting ready to order a truck, check the dealer's allocation or you could have a long wait. The waiting has been interesting,to say the least. I would like to say, THANK YOU, to everyone out there that has made the wait seen much shorter. Thank you and keep posting how much you love those trucks, HAPPY HOLIDAYS to all.
I'm a little confused (normal at times ). Way back in post #299, Viperle mentioned getting an oil change and paying for 7qts of oil. Then in response #302 Brutus agreed that 7qts was the normal amount to be used. My confusion comes from reading the owner's manual under "Capacities and Specifications" on page #219. Engine oil (includes filter change)- gas engines ---- CAPACITY 5.7L or 6 quarts.
Not wanting to get Viperle fired up or denounce Brutus's knowledge, which I respect, but what's up??? Plan on changing the break-in oil @ 1000 miles, again @ 3000 miles and every 3000 thereafter. Also has anyone used an after-market (FRAM for example) oil filter??? If so what No. is it??? Or can I conclude that a "98" or "99" V-10 after-market oil filter will work with the "00" as no changes or improvements have been made. Thanks in advance for any information.

I can't comment on the oil capacity. However I think I would avoid Fram filters. I've heard, that they lack the antidrain back valves which is supposed to keep the oil in the upper part of the engine when not running.
Personally, I just use Motorcraft filters, more out of habit than for any technical reason.. I figure, since I've already saved a bundle of $$ by changing the oil myself, I could spring a few extra bucks for the filter.
I've heard Motorcraft filters are made by Pureralator (or however you spell that).

still waiting on 9/30 order for ramp arrival. vopc says week 12/28. been a long wait & now current truck is 'atta here as we expected a mid-December "show" (sold to family member). the new beast sat at the plant for over 2 weeks without doin 'nothin from what we can discern (built 11/27 shipped 12/14).
I am a little confused over some of the postings re: ESOF. I recently ordered a 350 with the esof option. My understanding was that this is a convenience item for shifting in and out of 4wd, but that the ability to manually lock the hubs for more strenuous 4-wheeling is retained.
Is this true, or does the esof option eliminate the ability to lock manually?
If you can still lock manually when needed, why wouldn't you want the esof option to have the best of both worlds?
1: Bess - thanks for the prompt input -( it seams tough to get a response at times ) it's much appreciated. I honestly didn't know that there was THAT kind of difference between oil filter manufacturer's products. I've never heard of an "antidrain back valve" in an oil filter before, for goodness sakes. I always assumed that (FRAM having 3 grades of filters) if I purchased the better grade from FRAM and changed oil/filter/grease every 3000 miles or less I would be doing better than most guys on their maintenance program. I am definitely going to check into MOTORCRAFT products a little more thoroughly.
2:Tonkaman - (ESOF) My thoughts exactly!! I have ESOF and looking at the hubs there is an "AUTO" and "LOCK" position. Maybe not the best for REAL SERIOUS OFFROADING but I'm not planning on doing any SERIOUS off roading with "this" rig anyway. I purchased 4x4 for more traction on boat ramps, snow and occasionally running on sand at the ocean beaches. I have had a chance to try it while getting our Christmas tree and it works GREAT!!!! ENJOY!!!
we'll its just over a 1100 hundred miles i love the truck!!my question is i developed a sqeak in the left front end,not sure if its a spring or shocks,has anyone out there had the same problem,seems to happen when you apply the brakes at a slow speed. thanks
...First, there is a technical bulletien out there for the 4x4 front end squeaks. I took mine in last week and there is a kit available that I think replaces the bushing on the bolt holding the front shackle on. Dealer called me yesterday to say part was in...will hopefully get scheduled just after the 1st of the year. Will provide more information on the upgrade and hopefully part number/tech bulletien number after I visit the dealer. ...The second squeak very well could be the brakes squeaking a bit. I also have sometimes a squeak, depending on humidity, rain, snow, road salt. From my understanding in talking with some people at MIDAS, generally on most trucks, the factory brake pads are a hard semi-metallic pad which will give some squeaks every now and then. ...Finally got to "lock & load" the 4x4 system last night...granted we only got about 2-inches, but it had the traction capabilities of a sherman tank!!! ...HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO ALL AND TO ALL A NEW SUPER-DUTY IN THIER GARAGE(if it fits)
Both are good reliable units. And with the ESOF you have the option of using the hubs in the manual position or automatic position. The real reliability issue is the shifting method. Manual has a direct "move the lever to engage the gears" type method. Almost nothing can go wrong. Where as the ESOF uses electrical and vacuum parts. Vacuum hoses can leak, electrical connections can get loose or dirty, switches can fail, and if you are stuck and the transfer case is stiff for some reason, ESOF can't be crammed into gear with all your might. So the manual is more fail safe even though both are very good. I was also told by one of the four wheel drive shops that if you ever want to put a limited slip or locking differential in the front, you need to have the manual 4X4 system. I don't use the 4 wheel drive real often (I have an early Bronco for that), but when I do, I need it and expect it to work. And also I may want to add a limited slip to the front some day. So I ordered the manual system and am very happy with it. Also, most four wheel drive magazines prefer the manual systems over the electric systems.
No dealer can promise a delivery date, until after production date. And even then it goes to rail and from there to a hub and waits for the new carrier to pick it up. There is a shortage of rail cars in some parts. So, even after production it can sit for weeks. If any dealer makes a promise of delivery, HE'S pulling your chain. SUPER DUTIES COME WHEN THE COME!!!!!
The ESOF does have a manual locking override. That wasn't the case with my 92 F-250 with SOF. The new ESOF for 99 is a different system. The first few months it was out (Spring/Summer of 98), they had problems with it. They found a fix for the problem and made the necessary change at the factory assembly line.
If I were going into some serious off-roading, I might consider using the manual override. However, I don't go off-road that much. I do drive in a foot of a snow or very muddy side roads to the fishing hole. Like I said, it has never failed me under a heavy load (my slide-in camper) and/or extreme temperatures.
Someone told me they saw a Superduty on it's on side in the middle of the road approaching my neighborhood. They said it looked like he hit the guard rail and flipped on his side. I didn't think anything of it until I got home. It was the neighbors truck a few doors down. I don't know the guy, but I know he uses it to pull snowmachines in the winter and a boat in the summer. The passenger side of his white over silver F-250 shortbed is pretty much trashed. It does appear that he drove it home after they sat it up on it's wheels again. What a drag on Christmas Eve. Makes you want to go out and give your a truck a hug for behaving when you're driving it.

My dealer told me to expect somewhere in the 12 week range based on his allotments etc... Another dealer showed me their allotments, and from those numbers it was obvious I would not get the truck for at least 16 months..
I was happily suprised when I received the truck in under 8 weeks, at an end price of $400 under invoice.. (I got an unexpected $500 factory rebate because I was a hurricane flood victim).

I have ordered a 2000 YK2 F350 4X4 SC LB V10 AUTO. Due to be built week of 10/31. Since I still have time to make changes I am looking for advice on the following. Camper Suspension Pkg. Since I am buying this truck to tow 10,000# Fifth Wheel do I need or want the Camper option? Salesman says I don't as I am getting Trailer Tow Pkg. Cab Lights. I was planning on installing a Visor with built in lights. Any comments and/or suggestions on this? Thanks in advance for any input. Happy Holidays to all!

Question: earlier I think Brutus mentioned using Heet product in his truck - is this correct ?
Someone once told me that this product is intended for older vehicles - I have no knowledge of mechanics, however this has bothered me for awhile - is this product meant for the current superduties?
Brutus reminded me of a question I've had since the first oil change: Best I can figure from the manuals, it should take 14.9 quarts in a PSD including filter, but no mention is made of with/without cooler. All of my oilchanges have taken 16 quarts. (This includes the oil in the filter) I have the factory oil cooler. My technique has been to put the first 15 quarts in (which then shows full on dipstick), then run it a few minutes, turn it off and let it settle. (last time I let it set overnight in case the oil wasn't dripping down that fast) At this point the dipstick is now reading low. (off the hash means add 2 quarts, and I'm just barely in the hash, so I add 1 to bring it near the top of hash)
Many of the visors will not fit trucks(will not cover all the remaining holes) with factory cab lights. I don't know about Super Duties, but this was the case on my old 97 F150. As for the Camper package,it will be cheaper than normal because you are getting the trailer towing package (duplicate upgrades). So it will mainly add the overload springs (which by the way don't give a stiffer ride because they only make contact when hauling a heavy load). If I were hauling a fifth wheel often and getting the trailer towing package, I would go ahead and shell out the extra hundred bucks or two for the camper package. On a truck this expensive, whats a hundred bucks?

I'm running 15w40 Ford oil (although I'm thinking I should go lighter for the January change) Only reason for using Ford is that I got several cases with the truck. Haven't decided what I'll go with when it's gone.
The product Heet or Heat (I can't remember which) is simply a product that helps with condensation in gasoline. Winter moisture and temps can cause condensation in gas tanks, so it is a pretty common practice in snow country. With that said, I have yet to use it in my Superduty.
I'm looking to buy a 250 SD 4x4 with crew cab. Need advice about transmissions - automatic or manual?? I've always been a fan of manual in the past. Also, any advantages of the V10 if not using the truck for a lot of towing?? Thanks in advance for your help.
Tranny: Both are good trannies, so the decision boils down to personal preference. I chose the 5sp manual and am very happy with it.. The clutch pull is lighter than my old Ranger, although the shifting is a little stiff yet, it will loosen up with time... Really, its a 4sp, cause you never use 1st except if your pulling large loads..
Engine: I have the 5.4L V8 with the 4.10LS rear end, and again I am very happy. My mileage is averaging 15.5 mixed driving city/highway. I feel the engine has plenty of power to pull the truck, and I have no problem keeping up with/passing normal traffic from light to light. This is the result of the combo: manual tranny + 4.10 rear + relatively light of a truck as SD's go.
Your truck is heavier (CC and 4x4) so its unlikely your mileage will be as good as mine if you get the V8. Folks with V10 and your combo (4x4, cc, any trans) are getting in the 11's mixed driving with highs in low 14's if strictly highway, which is dang good. One thing: if you want the V10 + manual + Limited slip rear (recommended) then you have to get the 4.30 rear end..
So, it seems that the mileage will be about 1 or 2 mpg less with the V10 vs v8 with your combo, which isn't really anything. So, you should testdrive the V10 and V8 so you can get some feel of what you'll prefer.. I bet you'll get the V10. Folks here love'em all.
Also, if you live in an area with lots of hills, that will factor into things as well..
I see that there's a 'gassers' forum section on www.ford-diesel.com. I see that someone there (spaceace) has F250 CC 4x4 5.4L 3.73.. You might want to check there too..
Did any of you guys look at Excursions before deciding on the SD? Just interested if there where mechanical tradeoffs (trans, rear end ratio, weight ratings) others looked at beyond the obvious of SUV vs. PU.
thanks again. I called this morning to check on my toy. If vopc can be believed (and the VIN the dealer gave me was right), as of 12/22 my SD is already on the train. Last Thursday, dealer told me it was scheduled for production week of 12/20 with delivery week of 1/10. I'm really looking forward to being a "have" instead of standing on the sidelines. Picked up my beast on 12/23 after a slight paperwork glitch. I put 250 miles on it this weekend around family responsibilities and here is my report. F250 sd, cc, swb, V10, 4X4 City mileage - don't care Highway mileage - don't care Average mileage - don't care (11.3 so far really) What I like best - Looking down on everything else What I like least - not enough excuses to drive it. This truck has exceeded all of my expectations. Those of you waiting for yours, it is really worth how ever long it takes.

Just my opinion but...I ordered the camper package on my SD because it was the only way to get a rear roll bar on a 2wd SD. The Camper package also lowers the tow package to $70/$59 (Retail/Inv) because both provide a front bar and the 130 amp alternator.
250 CC 4x4 v10 auto swb Lariat, etc. etc., ordered 9/25 built week of 12/6 shipped via rail 12/10 at the ramp 12/13 back to shipped via rail 12/13 STILL being shipped via rail with ETA week of 12/25 .... The customizing of my 00' F250SD CC 4x4 v10 continues. I added Hella FF100 fog lights in the lower front grill area. Totally protected from getting knocked off and they look and work great. Remote starter update. I finished the installation of a Bulldog RS100e remote starter today. I now have the secret decoder ring for the wires in the ignition harness if anyone is interested. I also have the remote lock/unlock wires figured out in the door panel but have run into a snag in terms of getting wires from the door into the cab. Does anyone know how to get the door interior trim off. The control module (power windows, locks and mirrors) assembly just pops up no problem. But I can not figure out how to get the rest of the interior panel off. There appears to be no obvious fastners. Any clues would be appreciated. Also I discovered how to safely remove the parking and head lamp switch plate. This allows access to wiring harness for the parking light wire. There is a spring loaded slide catch that holds this module in. It is located on the left hand side of the module as viewed from the driver's seat. Sliding this catch into the module releases the whole thing.

powering up the bunker right now....pulled the truck in the bunker garage staging area...gotta have a SD when the world crashes down.....will be valuable in hauling food and building staples. Still getting 12.5 mpg in city driving. I also picked some oranges for those of you worried about my scurvy problem with my only having ice cream, pork rinds and etc..... HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!!!!!
The door panel is held in place with (2) screws. (Excursion)(1) screw hides behind the window/lock control panel, the other screw hides behind the door marker/light.(Pry lens off with screwdriver Gently) lower window & lock button and lift panel straight up. when replacing, hook the bottom hooks into the door first, (they seem to be a bit longer)and tilt top up, then down.

This truck has exceeded all of my expectations. Those of you waiting for yours, it is really worth how ever long it takes.

when replacing, hook the bottom hooks into the door first, (they seem to be a bit longer)and tilt top up, then down.
