It's typical of GM do do stupid things! Like not having the four door in the 1999 model year? What were they thinking?

About the visors, you could ask the same question about why the Tahoe/ Suburban "full feature driver & passanger seats have side air bags but the trucks (exact same seat!) don't???

Someone asked about the tailgate two-tone paint job (or lack of)? What is the deal with that??? Why is the two-tone not available on the LT model???

2 tone LT this two tone LT that. How many times are people going to whine about this??? Take some masking tape put it around your truck buy a can of spray paint and make your own 2 tone truck. We can talk about it till we are blue in the face but gm will still not make the 2 tone in an LT model its not the end of the world i think people will survive.

...two words that most people would associate as readily as "military" and "intelligence"; or "tundra" and "full-size truck" (sorry, couldn't resist).

anyways, my point is this: a very nice lady from the fort wayne, indiana assembly plant called me at home last night to ask me how i like my new truck. verified all the pertinent data (model, options, etc) and then proceeded to go down a checklist of possible problems: engine, brakes, electrical system, etc...asking if i had had any problems. she also proceeded to request permission to call me in the future for further interviews on my satisfaction. wow. am i pleased or what? needless to say it was a short conversation, as i have had no problems, but it's nice to know gm is starting to wake up. by the way, next time they call, i'll be sure to mention my disappointment with the bad two-toning on the tail gate, the lack of side air-bags, and the short sun-visor...

Well, if the dimensions are the same for the visor fittings in the Tahoe and the Silverado (which they probably are), you could probably go to the dealer and order the Tahoe visors and install them. It would also seem that someone should have an after market version available...

Wow, somebody paid $110 to have their tailgate two-toned. Seems a little much to me, but maybe that could be going rate, I don't know. I did mine myself. Took about 3 hours. I picked up a can of color-matched spray paint at the auto parts store (O'Reilly's, I think) and a can of clear coat, also. Marked the tailgate while mounted on the truck. Removed tailgate, ran a piece of wide (2") masking tape (and paper to mask off the rest of the tailgate) from mark to mark and sanded the surface with some 400 wet-or-dry to rough it up. Cleaned surface with laquer thinner, and shot 3 light coats (waiting about 5 minutes in between) and then 2 heavy coats of color. Let that set about an hour and then shot 2 coats of clear. Let that set about an hour and stripped off the tape (carefully!!!). Let it sit overnight and re-installed the next day.

Thanks for the response. I have mainly used the 4x4 for driving in the snow, so I probably won't worry about the front diff (it only snows bad enough for that a few times a year here, but I'm glad I have it.) You said you used 4 quarts for the rear; did that fill it up to the proper level?

    Thanks,

I have been told that the 285/75s BFG AT will rub on the 2500 with the stock rim. I have the 265/75s BFG AT KOs on my 2500, stock rims, and they get close to rubbing the plastic inside the fenderwell. I am almost sure that they will rub if you go to a 8 inch rim.
  • tonkadavetonkadave Member Posts: 102
Has anyone put on 285/75R15 tires on their 1500 silverado 4x4? I have seen conflicting answers on this board as to weather they will fit on the stock rims, 16x7 aluminum. I guess I am going to try it anyway. Seems like the only way to fill the wheelwells to make the truck look right.

woooohoooo! My Pewter 00 Z71 arrived at 1:30 p.m. I had it sitting in my driveway at 4:30! Had 8 miles on it when I picked it up. 45 now. Rides and drives great. I know everyone else said it was worth the wait. Now I believe them! I would stay and write more, but I've got to go to my kitchen window and stare at my truck!

Oh, yeah almost forgot. You mean to tell me some of you (fill in the blank) are taking a can of $2 Krylon to your brand new $32,000 truck. hmmmmm...You should re-evaluate your decision making process. My two cents.
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
I will not even comment on that it was just plan stupid what you said.

    two tone lt fender flare???
    two tone bedliner

    Yea ok.

    I agree.

Let Ryan paint his truck with Krylon/Rustoleum.

I'll wait until an LT can have 2-Tone....or have the dealer custom paint it next truck.

And why do we still talk about this Ryan?....Cuz it's something that should be offered...that's why. A lot of color combos look very good in two tone...period.
Sooooo..if we want to talk about it...you are just going to have to listen...or like Monty Python said.."If you don't like it.......Don't watch!"

Congrats Rbrick....and as for deciding to NOT take Ryans advice...

    Hey Dave,

I plan on putting 285/70 R16s on mine (when I get it). They will be almost the same diameter as the stock 265s, but a little wider.
I picked out some already at PepBoys, and the guy there told me that there would be no problem mounting them on the stock aluminum wheels. Also, since the diameter is almost the same, you wouldn't have to fool around with the speedometer calibration.
I'm partial to the white outline letters though, and I have not found those yet. Let us know how your tires fit on your truck, but you might want to put the 70's on, instead of the 75's.

4 quarts in the rear differential and I could "feel" the oil just below the bottom of the fill plug with my pinky finger. After a 20 mile drive I checked it and the oil level was above the bottom of the plug. I may have over filled it by a pint but can not see why this would be a big problem. I think that is why the manual says to fill to within 25-40 mm from bottom of fill plug. The parts guy at Chevy claimed it holds about 2.5 quarts, based on my experience the manual is wrong.

What do you mean when you say the F150 rides like a rock? I assume you mean it's solid and tight. Or do you mean it rides rough?

What do you think of the Ford in general, comparing it to your Silverado?
  • gnippergnipper Member Posts: 120
I've been wondering about the 285 tire upgrade as well. I've heard 3 people confirm they would fit, so I'm counting on it. I ordered a Z71 xtnd Cab SLT (OK I know this is the Chevy board but the tire subject is all the same), not wanting to throw money away, I ordered it with the 245, smallest tire available planning on upgrading the day I get it to 285 75R16's.

I confirmed it tonight in Napa, CA there sits a 4 WD Z71 with 285 75 R16's on the Chevy lot (I'm not from here - just here on business and wanted to take a look). They were BF Goodrich White raised letter tires. The tire size and look is what I want, I'm still not sure I want the white raised letter though. I will admit they were on custom rims, not stock, so that part may still need confirmation. I plan on putting mine on the stock rims, so if anyone knows for sure they won't fit for whatever reason I'd like to hear about it.

After your rather youthful response, I can see why some get tired of your opinions. Don't get me wrong, speak your mind. All that I would say is if (my opinion) you post something rather asinine you should expect to be challenged on it.

Lets see now, buy a $2.00 can of spray paint to get a two-tone paint job on a $30,000+ truck! Well if that wasn't a youthful statement, I don't know what is???

You are correct in that I meant solid and tight, especially when you consider that it is a rental and the various types of people that drive it with their different styles of driving. When going over bumps and ruts there are no vibrations or aftershocks that my Silverado has. Considering that I have the Edlebrock IAS shocks on mine and the Ford is stock. I would compare the ride to a Z71 but a little on the softer side...still solid. Tires are Firestone Wilderness HT 235/70R16 on chrome rims. Like the chrome rims better than the Silverado's cause they don't have those stupid plastic lugnut covers. The lugnuts are covered by a single chrome piece. Tires are making some noise and shows evidence of cupping on the outside (9500 miles). Maybe too late for rotating? Love the four doors but the back seats are way too small for my needs and too upright. BTW the 4.6 isn't too bad. Desperately needs a catback and airaid.

My favorite is still the Dark Carmine Red over Sunset Gold Metallic.

I'm sick and tired of all the Pewter trucks!

Congratulations on getting your truck! Mine is due ~3/20, so I too will be able to say it was worth the wait.
  • gsxr1216gsxr1216 Member Posts: 62
Do you have the polished aluminum wheels??? Are they 6.5 or 7.0 wide? The tag on my door says 6.5 wide. DO your 265's crown in the center at all? I beleive that a 265 is recommeded for a 7-8in rim that is why i ask. I had a 94 ZR2 and i always wore the centers out of the tires because the rim is to narrow, the outsides of the tire would not touch the ground till they had about 20000 miles on them. Also if you are interested go to www.pacific-audio.com and go to the duscussion page there is a tire discussion and a link that shows a 1/2 ton with 285's on it then he put a 3" lift in, looks good.
    Thanks

If LT is still one tone for 2002 Model Year...Mine is getting a custom paint job.

never really saw a list-out of your truck before. yours is almost exactly like mine with the following exceptions:
    1. you got a locking rear...i didn't
    2. you got flares...i didn't
    3. yours is indigo only...mine is onyx over pewter (and i could give a sh*t about the bottom half of the tailgate...i ain't painting it and i ain't paying $110 to have it painted)

don't know about your inside, but mine is medium gray custom cloth...and i deleted the tape player. got an extra cubby-hole for my wallet, etc. ordered my westin chrome-plated stainless steel nerf bars (with 4 step pads) yesterday. $356.60 through local parts dealer. they should be here in about a week. no drilling, easy bolt-on assembly (to existing holes), and lifetime warranty...SOLD!!! bedliner's next...this fall perhaps.

I keep this post alive. I am like the dennis rodman of this post i keep people coming here.

Let me explain about the what i said ( i really dont even remember) about the paint. Someone said they got it done by a professional for like $100 some odd dollars and then someone said they wouldnt do that it cost to much blah blah blah and gm should do it. Well since gm doesnt where else are u going to go??? Thats why i suggested the tape and spray paint. Sounded like they didnt want someone else to do it. I hope no one would try that and if you do good luck with that.

What would u all do if i didnt post anything? Seriously that one week i was busy many of you were saying ryan wonder where he is and blue even told people i bought a tundra. I know i get off track sometimes and i apologize.

I don't understand why someone would take a perfectly good looking 1500 and make it look like a WORK TRUCK by putting flares on it. If you want a work truck, just buy a 2500.

I think if they were made to have flares, it should be part of the actual body mold, not add on crap.
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
The flares look sporty. Also rugged. I think the Z71 pkg should come standard with them. Its an offroad truck.

How come GM doesnt make them standard for the Z71 pkg like on the tahoe???

Here we go why doesnt gm do this or that. Only they know.

    THE TRUTH IS OUT THERE

    Ryan
  • joelisjoelis Member Posts: 315
Yes, if they wanted to make the Z71 a truely unique vehicle, they should have a separate body mold for them, along with the 2500's, in which the flare is built in to the quarter panels.

Its just my personal opinion that the add ons are kind of cheap looking.
  • rlangford2rlangford2 Member Posts: 17
You berate others for complaining about two tone lt's. Let's see. All you do is whine about bedliners and fender flares. If two tone lt's don't matter in the grand scheme of things, neither do bedliners and fender flares.

    Stop you pusillanimous mewling
  • bluebeastbluebeast Member Posts: 258
I believe you are the official "Silverado whipping boy" and I would not miss it for all the bedliners and flares in the world!!!!

P.S. 6 more days until Las Vegas, if I'm a winner ($4K or more) the Whipple is going on. When I get her down to the low 14's in the qtr mile I'll stop with the add ons. The "whippled" truck I test drove had to have the autotrac on the keep from burning off the rears!!(it had the rear lockers). Was on a 99 LS 4WD Xcab. MUST HAVE MORE POWER!

The Tahoe and the Suburban have different visors than the Silverado. The mounting bracket might be the same, but the notch where the visor clips is in a different location.
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
About fender flares? Yea alright whatever u say. Ill give u the bedliner thing but the flares im not whining about. I am going to take a hiadis a reprieve from this post. And watch u guys will have not a darn thing to talk about.

Actually it was not Ryan who complained about two-tone paint; it was me. I think it looks stupid most of the time. Personal opinion. Also, unless he changed his screen name, it was also NOT Ryan who said to take a paint can to make it two-tone; it was someone else who said he DID it.

Now back to the bashing ...

    What a zoo..

    Kyle,

Hope the no drill nerfbars are solid enough? Probably just mounts to the two cab bolts. Glad you went with Chrome instead of black. They will look much better.
My boards attatched to the cab bolts..as well as 5 holes in the rocker..and a bracket to the frame right about on the board where you step most often.
I didn't want to drill at first...but OHHHH are they so solid. A friend made a joke about jump on them...cuz he knows most are wimpy and I didn't stop him...he stopped himself cuz he was so sure it would be loose.

    Good Luck

    Ryan,
Don't flatter yourself too much. I doubt this topic will die if you leave. It was sailing full tilt without you for a week and even before you ever came around.
