I got a chance this weekend to run my stock 05' 4 door 4x4 tacoma before I do any performance upgrades. Out of 7 runs I averaged 15.76 with my best run at 15.55. This definatly exeeded my expectation's. Now I just need some company's to exeed my expectations by creating a supercharger, coldair intake, header's, exhaust, and a chip. Any body find any of this stuff yet?

Where did you get the bed mat for $53 (including S&H)? My dealer's parts department wants $80.
  • mccullersmccullers Member Posts: 9
I purchased my mat for $55.00 from my local Toyota dealer. I found a $55.00 price online, printed it out, and asked the dealer to match the price. I paid sales tax on the mat and no S&H. This is how I've purchased all of my accessories.
  • jsandjsand Member Posts: 19
That's strange. I ordered door edge guards from my dealer and they installed them. You might try another dealer. Good luck. :)

I've had the same problem. Got our truck with 4 miles on it. Driving back from the dealer (a 250 mile drive) - after being on the highway where the power steering disengages - it didn't kick back on when slowing down to taking a left turn off the highway. Had to do some extreme muscling - did it two other times as well. We only have around 250 miles on it right now because we are driving the 4-runner until we sell it - but the problem hasn't shown up recently. Was hoping it was just a breaking in issue. I'll post if the problem persists - and would like to hear of others having this issue and any resolutions.

I got mine for $59 + tax, no s/h from a local Toyota dealer by showing the parts guy internet prices. The whole price match thing was surprisingly easy.

How well does the Torza Top protect during rain, as well as being secure if you have valuables in the bed?

There is an aftermarket intake from K&N, headers from JBA, and exhaust from Borla.

    Check

I have 500+ miles on the truck now and have not experience the steering problems I have had since I got the truck. Hopefully it corrected itself?!?! I will post if the problem occurs again.

Since my last message, I experimented some more with various positions for the bug shield, amounts of tightening on the screws, etc. I also loosened and then retightened the hood latching mechanism. The short story is that the hood will now close and the bug shield looks good.
  • offroader82offroader82 Member Posts: 3
You should check out JBA headers and exhaust, they make pretty good headers and exhaust systems that bolt right up to our tacomas. and all the 05 stuff has just been realeased.

I have not come across ANY info on when the 2006s will be available. At this late date, I am thinking I'd rather wait. Anyone have any thoughts?

I think you mean you're too late for the 2005's. The 2006's should be out in mid to late September is what I've heard by people awaiting delivery. Production of the '06's begins this month.

I am looking for paintable running boards for the 2005 Tacoma (exclude the factory ones). I am disappointed in how many manufacturers have yet to build and test for this application. Does anyone know of a supplier for paintable running boards?

I'm planning on buying some ATS Custom running boards which come paint matched for a little over $500.

I should think that you would want to use a bit of vinegar, not baking soda, to remove "calcium and lime" (calcium carbonate).

Baking soda, or bicarbonate of soda, and calcium carbonate are both basic. If you want chemistry to do the work, add vinegar to the water. Further, adding a base to water makes it "hard", adding acid (a mild one like vinegar) will make it "softer". OTOH baking soda is a really fine abrasive, which will polish or abrade high spots without "gouging" and creating scratches. So perhaps your success with baking soda is "mechanical" abrasion, not chemistry.

Thanks for that info, but there are still plenty of 2005's around. I am in North Carolina, and the SE Distributors have all of their inventory online.... there are still lots of '05's coming in through August.

My dealer told me the '06 models will be here in October. The one I ordered is coming in a few weeks and is an '05.

Forgot to mention - my truck is the Access Cab. ATS, Lund, Aerotech do not build for that size in custom paintable versions.
    Thanks anyway.

Had this to happen a couple of times when the brake wasn't depressed far enough
  • white05tacowhite05taco Member Posts: 17
Hi all. Does anyone know if the low fuel warning light applies to all models? I have a pretty much basic Access-cab model, and was trying to see how low the fuel gauge would go before the light comes on. Right now it's about 1/8 inch before the "Empty", and I still am not getting a light. This is about as low as I've ever run the tank (400 miles so far), and I obviously don't want to run it dry waiting for a light that may or may not exist to come on.

I shined a flashlight next to the Empty mark on the gauge, and cannot tell whether or not there even is an indicator light next to it.

    Anyone?
  • jsandjsand Member Posts: 19
According to the manual and I verified this on my 05 DC, there should be about three gallons left in the tank when the light comes on. When my light came on, I immediately went and filled up and it held almost 18 gallons in a 21 gallon tank.

Greetings to all. I have just joined this forum today, and I have to say that I have already learned alot just by reading some of the posts.
I hope I can educate others at some point as I start adding accessories to my black 05 dbl cab!

For the past 2000 miles my truck has been having intermitent hard starting problems. I run around the construction site all day, short trips in the extreme heat. There are times during the day when the engine will just crank, once I let off and try again it will start right up. Toyota said tryi premium fuel, did that and the problem strill occurred. Anyone else have this problem or similar? Trying to diagnose before I go back to TOyota, because they say they will need my truck for a few days. THANKS
  • msibillemsibille Member Posts: 275
Also can happen if you begin to move the shift lever even a very small amount (sideways) prior to depressing the brake. If you start move the lever before applying the brake, it ain't goin'.

I ordered my bed mat from valleytoyotaparts on Ebay® at 1:00 pm on Monday, it was on my porch when I got home from work on Tuesday. Wow. Cost $55.00 plus $10.00 shipping. The OEM bed mat is great! Very heavy duty. Everyone on this forum that recommended it was right. A must have.
  • zenmotozenmoto Member Posts: 14
I believe mine is the same, I assumed it was because I purchased my truck through the "fleet sales dept" at my local dealer (much better deal from them than the regular sales staff would give me @ $500 over invoice).

I wouldn't worry about it too much ...of course I plan on putting a couple hundred thousand miles on my truck! :D

"just did an oil change double cab 4by4 manual says 5.2 l i put in 5.2 but its very hard to read the dip stick anyone else have this problem it seeems very hard to see theres oil on it but not very visible hard to tell if the right amount is in it. "

I've had the same observation (difficulty reading the dipstick).
I took my (2005 DC V6) dipstick and sanded it with 400 grit wet/dry paper, sanding across the width of the stick, not along the length. I appears that the very smooth surface of the dipstick, along with the lighter wts of oil used these days, results in the difficulty reading the dipstick. After the light sanding, the dipstick is MUCH easier to read. The microscratches hold the oil in place on the dipstick face, instead of just along the edges (since the edges get oil on them just from sliding thru the tube, you can't tell what part is just trace oil from the tube and what part is where the oil level was). Now I get a much more distinct indication of oil level.

FWIW, I added only 5 full (US) qts following replacement of the filter (I also pre-fill the filter, but from the same 5 qts), and found the level is just below max. Another justification for remedying the dipstick issue and not just relying on the qty of oil installed.

    cheers,
    m

I have a 05 tacoma access cab looking for a recomndation of what kind of tool box i can put in the bed. Any sugestions would be great.
  • tacojohntacojohn Member Posts: 9
EXCELLENT IDEA with the dipstick.... I will do that.
I have another question for everyone. I performed my first oil change last night in my 4.0 dbl cab Tacoma, and could not avoid spilling the oil from inside the filter all over when I backed the (overly tightened) oil filter off. Any ideas about how to avoid this?
Also, the NAPA oil filter (# 91348) is physically smaller in height than the OEM filter. Anyone see this yet?

    Thanks, J

What our tech's have found works well for the 4.0L engines is... the oil filter sits in a raised area with a flange to catch oil on the right side of the engine when you're facing it from the front. On the bottom edge of the lip is a rubber plug to open up a drain for the lip. Use a 20oz soda pop bottle under the drain when you loosen the oil filter to catch the overflow. Should solve your problem. The techs say they all love the way it's designed as they don't have to wipe up the whole front of the engine like on many designs.

    Hope this helps.

    Agreed. It's fantastic.

In fact, I used a plastic bottle that happened to wedge in really well btwn the coolant hose and the fan shroud. I didn't even have to hold it. Afterwards, wiped up only the drip catcher, put the rubber plug back on, and disposed of the oil in the bottle. Because of the convenience of the filter placement, I also marked the date & mileage on it w/ an indelible marker. (The Purolator filter is white, and is a virtual notepad.) Everytime I check my oil, I'm reminded of the date/mileage when last it was changed. (Important for me as I'm just at 4k miles after 6 months of ownership.)

I know there are many who don't value it (but us mechanical engineers frett about lubrication). I ALWAYS prefill the oil filter. Yes, the filter goes in upside down, but you can fill the center hole, and you'll note most of it will flow slowly into the pleated filter area, filling the area btwn the screen and the cannister. It's not much, but it's that much less oil that has to be pumped into the new filter before pressure can build in the system. It's also not much effort req'd.
  • tacojohntacojohn Member Posts: 9
When I saw the flange I knew that there HAD to be a better way, obviously they had engineered some good way to do this, but I did not see the plug. Thank you very much for this info, next oil change will be MUCH cleaner!

You're welcome. And thank the engineers at Toyota for probably the easiest oil filter placement I've ever seen on an automobile/truck engine.

    Hello,
This is my very first message here. I’ve spent some time reading up on all available information from several sites (Toyota, online magazines, aftermarket sites, etc..), trying to learn everything I can about my truck (2005 Tacoma V-6). My main interest is, by the time I get back home from Irak, to have a clear idea on what I can do to improve the performance of my truck. As most of us know, the 2005 Tacoma DOHC V-6 delivers 245 horses @5200 RPM. This is 20 horses less than the new Nissan Frontier. I immediately looked around for aftermarket parts in an attempt to squeeze as many extra horses as I could from my Taco. I quickly made up a short list of items to consider, including:

Headers – So far, available for the Tacoma 2005 I’ve only found the JBA Cat4ward shorty-types. I have not found anything from Gibson, Borla or others.
Cold Air Intake – K&N Part Number 63-9025. To my knowledge, other manufacturers like Volant, still do not have these available.
Exhaust system – Magnaflow (Catback CARJ16625-not available yet) , Gibson, Flowmaster, etc…
Supercharger/intercooler – Forget it, too expensive.
Chip Module Programers – Unichip Brand Engine tuning systems or similar other brand.

I have several questions about these, based on 1) the fact that I am half a world away from my truck and can’t see things for myself, and 2) I am no mechanic and it is an exercise in futility to even attempt to estimate horsepower gain from these modifications.

First of all, do the 2005 Taco come equipped with headers from the factory? If so, would it still justify the expense (about $350.0) of aftermarket headers in terms of a horsepower gain (or engine sound), or is it not really worth it? I believe the 2005 Taco comes equipped with 2.5-inch exhaust from the factory, so it really makes no sense to upgrade the exhaust piping, correct?

I’ve looked at images of the engine and it seems the factory intake is a cold air type, that draws air from somewhere near the wheelwell. Can anyone verify this for me? If it indeed is a cold air type intake, then what gain would I get from a K&N type intake and filter? Any ideas? Would I risk the warranty being void? Will a simple K&N drop-in type filter (Part # 332281) give an acceptable gain in performance, considering that the intake system of the truck is already cold-air type?

Same thing with the muffler. I am seriously considering a Flowmaster muffler. But IF the Tacoma already has a higher performance muffler, again, why change? I really like the sound that a Flowmaster muffler gives to a car. But this time I am looking for a deep, throaty sound for my truck. Which one? I guess I’ll worry about that later.

Finally, are chip Programmers available for the Taco? Are they safe? Are the $600.0 or so they cost worth the gain in performance?

To summarize, I don’t know if making any of these modifications will noticeably improve the performance of my truck, since some of these items already came in the truck from the factory. The sad thing about this is, there may not be a straightforward (read relatively cheap and easy) way to add up to 20 horsepower to my truck without losing on fuel consumption.

    I appreciate any advise given.

    Regards,

    Ivan
  • tjyodertjyoder Member Posts: 22
I'm not sure of your primary concern with the horsepower and comparing it to Nissan Frontier, so this reply may be way off the mark. When doing research I did see that the Tacoma had 20 less hp, but it goes 0-60 in under 7 seconds, while the frontier does 0-60 in 7.6 seconds. They both have the same towing capacity 6500 lbs. I believe (someone correct me if I'm wrong) that the reason the tacoma gets more bang out of the HP is the composite bed makes a lighter truck.
  • giftofmithragiftofmithra Member Posts: 2
I read the same thing, and it makes sense. I am just wondering if all of these performance accessories (header, intake, muffler, chip programmer, etc...) will really give my truck the extra horsepower they (the manufacturers) claim from other vehicles, or will all be just a fruitless expenditure of money. I am not interested in looks, just better performance without losing in on fuel economy. The better engine/exhaust sound comes with the package I guess.
    Regards,
    Ivan

Can someone give me the part number for the Toyota oil filter (2005 V6)? I know the one they give me at the parts counter will be different from the factory filter and I just want to be able to verify that it is correct. They have a new parts guy and I'm not sure he's up to speed. Thanks

I am also interested in purchasing an ipod interface for my '05 tacoma. is there anyone in the SoCal area that can point me out to a dealer that can help me out? I would like to go with the Street Machine product, but have no clue about installation and other products I may need.

    Thanks!

I know it ain't. I'm pretty sure he just wanted to see the color scheme with the scoop and graphics. The long and short bed pretty much look the same. If you're that worried, Photoshop it and add a foot to the bed.

Hi All, I'm in the market for a Snugtop shell. I just cae from Campway and saw both the Xtra Vision and the Super Sport Shell. They both are the same except for the windows.

The side windows on the Super Sport Shell are frameless windows and has pop-up windows, making it an overall cleaner look.

The side windows on the Xtra Vision are framed and have sliding windows along with screens.

I like the clean look of the Super Sport Shell, but I like the functionality of the Xtra Vision sliding windows. What do you all prefer? Anyone have experience with Leer caps? The 100XQ looks cool and you'll have auto release with your factory keyless entry.

Also, any of you guys know of a camper shell hoist system where I can remove the shell myself in case I need to carry something that will not fit in the bed with the shell on?

    What do you guys prefer?

My brother lifts his top off by sliding 2x4's under the top and hoisting it up with a boat trailer winch. ( Need to have the ratchet set so that it won't free-wheel down.) I don't have the room or I would do that, also. I have a Super Sport top on a PreRunner Access Cab. It has the fold down front window which makes for easy cleaning of the truck window. A friend has a canopy with the sliding windows in the side and he gets water in the bed from the channels.

I am having a very significant problem driving East into the rising sun and West into the setting sun. The reflection off the hood scoop is VERY bright and right in my eyes. I have a white 2005 Tacoma Extended Cab Sports Package. I guess I will only drive North or South when the sun is up...hahahaha....Seriously, if I had been aware of what an obnoxious problem this would be I would have negotiated for a regular hood. Similar problems?? Solutions?? I called Toyata and they stated "no recourse" through the corporation for me. I guess I could paint the offending area flat black/grey of maybe put some flames or graphics on the scoop.I have never been a fan of the cosmetic only apperance items but maybe I will stick a fat supercharger under there someday....(fat chance) Thanks for letting me share!!
