Did you recently rush to buy a new vehicle before tariff-related price hikes? A reporter is looking to speak with shoppers who felt pressure to act quickly due to expected cost increases; please reach out to PR@Edmunds.com for more details by 4/24.
I don't think North America ever marketed the LR3 to have "Glass Break" detection. All the "real" reference and marketing material I have says simply "vehicle security system with keyless entry."
By the way, warranty is not impacted unless the change directly causes a failure.
I personally don't care. Alarms are virtually useless beyond the initial casual theft deterrant of "just being there." Serious thieves can steal anything.
"For all the talk regarding stalling on this board, I visit three other LR3 message boards and the only post regarding stalling is from the same individual discussing it here. I think it is a much smaller issue"
Stalls reported by:
me - stalled 8 times
brauna - twice the car's engine has shutoff on it's own while driving. Both times the car was on a big slope
btn - Do these people think I'm lying? That my vehicle didn't stall
landy man - stalling reported on 2 different LR3s - Land Rover Parsippany sold us their first LR-3 and my parents traded their ML350 in on one, too. We have both had the stalling issue.
landy man - found a third LR3 with the stall - I might add that during a test drive on the dealer's driving course, the demo stalled going downhill and would not start until the car was able to reset itself. There is a problem
emols - My car has also stalled twice when the car was 3/4 full- but I have had it for 6 weeks and let the tank go well below the 1/4 mark. On the 2 separate occasions- almost 4 weeks in between the stalls- I was going downhill as well.
Warren Brown of the Washington Post also reported it - "Downside: Computer glitch on tested pre-production models led to several brief engine stalls on steep hill climbs. Land Rover engineers said the matter will be corrected with new sensors in production models."
Looks like stalling has occured on at least 8 vehicles, and hills seems to be a factor.
Yes. Lots of folks on this board...but nowhere else. Adverse selection? One of the other boards is a European site and it may be due to the diesel engine, but the other two are maily US folks. It's not that I doubt you folks that have stalls, it would just be nice to know how large this issue really is...before I plunk down my 55k
The real question is... How many of those reported "stalling" issues are on vehicles that don't have the defective "incorrect" gas tank? That's the key.
I know gw123 has had the tank already swapped to a supposedly correct tank, but what about the others? I've never stalled, even on serious grades.
You've got to be kidding, right? The 2005 LR3 was launched in November of 2004 and isn't even out in some rest-of-world markets. I think you can figure it out.
have had car for 1 month / 1000 miles and love driving it with no problems. BUT, twice the car's engine has shutoff on it's own while driving. Both times the car was on a big slope (?) and the radio and heating both full power (?). Any thoughts on why this happened?
**note to self: do not follow LR3 too closely...especially downhill.**
I've experienced the same "jump" under the same scenarios...
I haven't brought it to the dealer service team's attention, but will...
my lr3 hse has been in the shop for a week while they have been diagnosing and ordering the parts to fix the air conditioning. the AC works in upper (winshield) and lower (foot) positions, but not in the four central vents (the round ones on the main dash).
Apparently they have to replace a motor and dismantle the dash to get to it...i'm pretty upset at the prospect of what technician damage might occur with such an operation, and suspect it was never properly checked before delivery..this occured at about 700 miles, but only after I tried to use the AC...(I live in LA and had no need for it until early jan after buying it mid dec).
I've enjoyed it so far. The dealer has been cooperative at least in giving me a loaner..but i don't think they thought it would be this long...
my advice, make sure the AC works, even if it is cold when you take delivery!
I'll have to look for some hills to ride on too to see if how it holds up...
The reason for asking is that some car makers set a limit on the number of cars that will be built for a certain model year. When that number is met, they produce the new model. For instance, when the 2003 Volvo XC 90 was released in Nov 02 there was such a demand that by July of the next year, the 2004's were being released.
Hey I work for Land Rover and I also just picked up an Lr3 approx 89 miles right now. I will help out as much answering any q's on this vehicle. First of all when I heard that Lr3's in the uk have the sensors on the windows with the superlocking feature, I couldn't beleive they would not provide the LR3 in the North America market with window sensors. For a $50k SUV, its unheard of. I hope LR does decide to do somthing about this. LR3 will be known as the vehicle thats easy to break into.
Hey,my LR3 stalled, I have 86 miles on it. It stalled when I made a left hand turn, service will never beable to duplicate the problem so I am just praying we are never put into a dangerous situation. Its the nature of the beast. Its a Landrover, they are known to do these things. My headlight switch never shuts off the front lights unless I turn it on and off again and my steering wheel is facing left approx 10 degrees. This vehicle is brand new. Scary isn't it.
Stalling may be because of a loose connection to the fuel pump or a bad fuel pump. I know the UK version comes in a V6 deisel, I'm wondering if they put the wrong fuel pump from the factory
Go to http://www.landrovertechinfo.com and click at the top on the owner information (or owner manuals or whatever it is called). You need to use IE (Does not work with Mozilla etc) and must live in US or UK, as no other countries exist (so I now live in "Canada, USA", which probably reflects realities as seen by Amercans anyway).
You can download manuals and addenda. I found an audio manual addendum and some other manuals.
Factoid from the site: I see that LHD English export markets get 100,000 km warranty. I believe we here in Canada get 80,000 km, but since LR have not sent me a service booklet or warranty manual yet I have no idea. Preposterous, to own a car for a month withouth having seen any warranty details - 'they are at the printers' and will be sent Janaary' I was told. Not holding my breath...
Please see numerous other posts re mixed up fuel pumps etc.
"tincup47" who also works for LRNA had comments as did many of us.
Fuel pump, valves & sensors buried in fuel tank by manufacturer of sub assembly "TI Automotive".
Diesel fuel pump got installed in some gas engined vehicles. Not many dealers were aware of this however! Seems that sensors were different also.
It's cheaper to build the tank with all this stuff inside to save time for the OEM, but if you hit a minor malfunction it calls for the whole tank assembly to be removed!
Not too bad when it's all under warranty but imagine how much this will all cost when it's out of warranty!
Not good from the consumers point of view methinks!
My LR3 stalled within 24 hours of the new tank being installed. I doubt the tank is the only issue with the stalling, and may not even be the cause of any stalling. From what the other posters described about the engineering of a diesel tank, I'm not sure that an occasional stall at low speed when going downhill would be the only problem caused by a tank/pump that expected higher pressure.
Be aware most of their marketing is about the Range Rover implementation of the system. (LR3 integrates into radio head unit "infotainment" not Touchscreen, doesn't have SMS, etc.)
I hope you are demonstrating your British humor when you say "Its the nature of the beast. Its a Landrover, they are known to do these things."
If you are serious, then I hope you are not either involved in the production of the LR3 or have any decision making responsibility for the LR3.
Lack of quality can and must be corrected. It is not acceptable to accept low quality as "the nature of the beast". Detroit found that out the hard way years ago when the Japanese cars beat them hands-down on quality. After a decade or so, the Big 3 made cars at the same level of quality that they were getting beat at by the Japanese manufacturers the decade before. Their problem is that the Japanese have improved the quality even more over that decade. They are discovering that quality is a journey, not a destination.
Land Rover will not exist as a manufacturer if they continue to maintain low quality levels. Or is your other car a Yugo?
I thought the so-called vulnerability would only be the immobilizer, not the actual "key" exactly. (The device that only allows the car to start if the "chip" is around.) I doubt there is any serious reason for concern for the millions out there, but I'm sure it'll get over-hyped like everything else.
1- sirius radio adapter integrated into alpine stereo
2- Ipod adapter integrated into alpine stereo
3- Bluetooth Telephone Kit (compatible with Treo 650) integrated into alpine stereo
4- DVD Player kit from factory
5- Cooler kit for car which was postponed."
1-2 are not current options; don't expect 2 anytime soon. 3 from the factory will appear in "Spring", but don't expect state-of-the-art. 4 is not a factory option; it's dealer install only by design. 5 has been available for months now.
Also, it's not an "Alpine" stereo. Yes, Alpine was a supplier (as was Harmon for the audio)... but it's all at Land Rover's direction. I can't imagine Alpine leaving off MP3 (and CD Text) track information. Doh! Do you really think these guys will add iPod integration anytime soon if they can't even display simple text about a track?
First, when I was parking and lowering the car, it reported "Suspension in extended mode: raise when clear of obstacle". There was of course no obstacle. Shrug. I set it back to normal height and all seemed OK.
Later, after I was on my way home., the car suddenly beeped and told me "SUSPENSION ERROR, MAX 30 MPH". I reset the car by removing the key; restarted, and it raised.
Arriving home I tried to lower it, and the first symptom happened again.
I believe that our family is one of the few with more than one LR3 at this time. Both of our vehicles exhibited at least on episode of stalling. Neither our's nor my parent's fuel tank was changed. On our's, they checked and tightened all fuel line connections and reloaded computer program for F.I. system. On my parents' car, they additionally downloaded the electronic transmission program. No stalling again on either - we shall see. We do both have the lurch spoken about from stop, but if you give gentle acceleration, there is no lurch. In all this is a fabulous machine. No one should expect any perfect new car, in my humble opinion. Nope - not even the Japanese cars are trouble free. Tell me a story about the trouble free Japanese brand/model and I can relay a horror story about the same brand/model as I have many friends in the auto sales/repair business. BTW, I do sincerely believe LR will get the kinks ironed out. Worst comes to worst, invoke the Lemon Law.
Sure - high tech equipment needs maintenance. Tell a Boeing 747 engineer that he needs to do no maintenance and he'll laugh. As long as LR fix the issues and take them seriously.
I have:
- "The lurch", manageable by throttling slowly.
- Suspension extended mode fault, as of tonight.
Plus the expected little things, like the steering wheel pulling slightly to the left.
As long as all this is handled quickly and adequately, it's really not an issue. If on the other hand these issues are *not* handled well (e.g. LR ignores or denies), then it would be a problem.
"Keyless Entry System with Permetric Sensing Security System"(note capital letters).
Let me add what system was described on the website before they changed it last Thursday or so, "Perimeter Security System. The LR3's Peremeter Security System with Keyless Entry helps protect your vehicle from intruders. Perimeter sensor detects doors being forced or glass being broken. Interior sensor is triggered by any attempt to gain access to the vehicle."
That clearly implied to me this car had the full blown system or I would not have bought it.
For you not to care, I guess you don't ever take your car out of your locked garage. Have you ever stayed at a motel?
The guy that broke into mine now knows he can break into any LR3, climb in, get what he wants and out - no problem as he knows not to open a door. All will be quiet. There is a reason for glass and intrustion alarms other than keeping 007 calibre thieves away.
I doubt if this was "Ocean's Eleven". It was likely some street scum that wanted a radar detector for some crack I bet.
You have got to be a Land Rover plant with intent of defending this blunder. I invite all comments.
The suspension has now completely died: "Suspension Fault - Max 30 mph", and no height mode LEDs at all. Plus the car sits at sort of a funny angle. Driving it, there is no damping at all: it's like driving a rollercoaster.
The garage auto-emailed me a message that the heaed technician is out until Wednesday. We will see tomorrow.
I've experienced 2 stalls so far, both downhill while stopping. My concern is how does LR fix this if it's just a guess as to the case that no one's figured out - ie, electrical, fuel tank related, whatever. To invoke a Lemon Law, does it take 3 or 4 iterations where I "survive" a stall, go to LR service, and say they "fixed" it until I get my money back?
Lemon law isn't your only remedy in the States either. You can use the warranty laws too. I can't find the link off-hand but Driftracer has mentioned this alternative around the boards somewhere.
I got my LR3 HSe at the end of December and here are the problems I have had;
1) outside driver side door handle stays in open position when opening door from outside and has to be pushed back in in order to shut door
2) starting RPM is over 2500 and is VERY loud
3) brakes squeal embarassingly just after starting
4) the BIG ONE: as of today I got the Suspension Failure error which tells you to limit speed to 30 MPH. Car was bouncing up and down uncontrollably and I was on a highway when this happened. VERY disturbing!
I am going to take a huge hit and get rid of this thing ASAP. I will never be able to trust this truck to go on a trip of any substantial length. I should have gone with my gut and NOT bought the replacement to the least reliable truck on the planet - the Discovery.
Any ideas on how to go about getting rid of this thing while taking the least possible financial hit?
Thanks lr3tonga. That's my take too - 50K w/out any internal sensor or glass protection? ARGHHHHH. NO! I wish I could be as cavalier as the guy who says it is no big deal. For me is is a a big deal. I am on the road a lot. I usually have things of fairly high value in my car. I had noticed that (no glove lock) before I bought. I scratched my head and said live with it... I also noticed right up by the map lights, little slits in the plastic where the little sensors were listening, sending and receiving microwaves or infrareds or something when I was away (It was a Land Rover - it will be the best!!! Bond, and all...), standing by to protect my fine, new car. Well guess what?! There is apparently nothing in there! Another weird thing is that they put no lock on the glove box. Is there a trick lock somewhere or does a valet always have access to your glove box? I mean what were they thinking? Like people who drive this car can take out everything they have in it every time they get out of the car? Hello this is an expensive car! People that drive it are likely to have some pretty nice things to carry around in it! What's so infuriating is that they got so much right on this car....
costaricafan, you want a locking glove box and a stock interior motion sensor for the security system? Heck, we don't even get a locking fuel filler door in North America. We're cheap. ;-)
Send your feedback to LR (via web site or customer service)... product suggestions can't hurt.
There are a few little things that bug me about LR3 product design, too... but overall it's great. If it was $5K less, I'd ignore the few missing things. ;-)
I also posted some issues on this forum in the past.
Even though I still like the machine so much, misgiving starts to set in and to intensify on the quality and reliability issues that so far come with this great machine. If LRNA does not act quickly and decisively to rectify all the problems that had shown so far, stalling, security, locking fuel tank, lurching after stopping, suspension faults, steering wheel pulling to left, and so and so forth, LRNA can not blame people that people sue, people outside stay away and people inside look for exits... It would be very bad...
Is it sufficient to invoke the lemmon law by the fact that what we were told we were going to get did not match what we actually got, and dealers refusal to rectify the situation as such, such as locking fuel tank, and security?
Do those who have had SERIOUS problems (stalling, leaking fluids) have an HSE or an SE? Locking rear differential (heavy duty package) or not?
If this is allowed, just respond to this email and we can tally it up easily. Also, please indicate if the problem was fixed (I saw one or two of those above); along with the solution.
I have an SE w/o heavy duty package and zero problems so far.
The mechanic said he reckoned all the error memories (many!) will prompt LR USA to say "just clear them and wait until it happens again - maybe then we will know /which/ connector or ECU is causing the problem". I stressed the importance of not being an experiment - we'll see.
Michael
PS my dealer wanted a credit card for a rental. I got them to waive the $25 a day charge but not the credit card. "Those are the rules Mr Budd, the owner, has set; and those are the rules you must obey". Last car I will ever buy there. Maybe 13 BMW's and Mercedes's spoiled me...
I've had the lurch looked at by the dealer, with no success. My bet is the computer can't think fast enough to know if it should be in 1st or 2nd gear. Coming to a complete stop solves the problem. Other than that... best 4x4 SUV on or off the road.
I can always hope that this stereo, an alpine unit w/ harmon kardon tech added (strange due to the next to non-exitstent auto division) will get some of my goodies.
i know i can go aftermarket but that really isnt the same.
"The suspension has now completely died: "Suspension Fault - Max 30 mph", and no height mode "
Something similar happened to me Saturday morning. I hadn't driven the car since Monday so I let it heat up for a few minutes and drove the 3 blocks to the FDR drive, our local higway in NYC. I noticed it did not come out of low height mode, figured that I wasn't driving fast enough. Once I entered the highway I got a warning that all special programs were not working and then that there was a "complete system failure." Handling was as you described. I exited as quickly as possible, shut off the engine and restarted it. It then worked fine for the rest of the weekend...
Our stalling LR3 is an SE with pretty much every option (no DVD).
We have 700 miles on it and have not gotten it to stall in any other spot but the hill near out house. If we lived somewhere else, right now I'd be reporting how great this truck is - tight, solid, great features, etc. BUT....
After 2 trips to the shop, 1 new gas tank, new catalytic converter, and new sensors, we picked the truck up on Friday evening.
It stalled again this morning (9th time). Back to the shop.....
We are obviously concerned about the next location we find were it may decided to stall.
Mine too, this morning it raised but it took a LONG time to raise - think 5 minutes.
The dealer and LR Canada told me "we have never heard of this fault". Yeah right - either they do not read these forums or these posts are atypical, or LR are being economical with the truth.
PS I always park in access mode or my wife finds it difficult to get in and out.
I love this truck so far, I have been reading this post since the first page last summer. I ordered in Oct and I finally received my fully loaded HSE. I also added the running boards, sliding loadspace plate and cross bars. All together $65k, inc tax in LA, CA.
There is a learning curve to figure out all of the gadgets.
The voice command often does not understand my commands but that seems to be getting better. I need to memorize the commands too.
The Alpine sourced unit DOES play MP3s, however I placed about 20 songs onto a data CD and only 3 were recognized. I originally thought that it was a bit rate problem but it was not consistent, both of my 128k/b songs played but only one of my 160k/b songs. The unit also reported that I was in folder 5 of 5 and that there were 3 songs in that folder. There was only one folder on the CD and all of the songs were contained in that one. I am very disappointed that there is no sat. radio option.
The speaker grills vibrate with low bass, it is annoying. The premium stereo is far from audiophile but probably okay for most. The sub also vibrated the back license plate and I had to tighten all of the mounting screws, Problem solved for now.
The cooler box may fit a 20oz if you flip the top rubber piece, I have not tried yet but it looks promising.
The adaptive lights are nice. I think that people may think that I am driving with my brights on because a few people have been flashing their lights at me. But if I gave them my brights they would be shocked because they are like daylight. When the dim lights are on, there is an annoying horizontal bright/dark line to keep the lights from shining in on coming windshields but the horizontal line is too low and it almost feels like you are ducking under to see the road.
The vertical lines for the heated windshield are very noticeable at stop lights, and when sun light is hitting it at the right angle. It is not bad enough to deter from getting the option.
My rear passenger headrest has some of the cushion that is poking out and you can see a bump in the leather. I am guessing they will just order me a new one.
I removed all of the head rests to help with visibility in the rear windows. They store nicely in the floor behind the second row seats, under the third row seat, if it is folded flat.
After the 2nd row seats are flipped down you have to pull a back tab to get them to move down another level to form the flat cargo space. I accidentally pulled that tab too hard and a plastic push-type retainer screw pulled out, I have pushed it back in but I have to wonder why they didn't use a real metal screw. I have been having a hard time getting the sets moved down to the lower level, I need more practice.
No stalls, how ever it did go into neutral once when accelerating hard. I think it was because I was in low gear and it probably was activated at a certian RPM or speed. The LR3 is very fast, not off the line but it will do 100 and feel like 75 before you realize it. Sport Mode is great too.
The benefits of this car far outweigh the minor annoyances. If you want a deal, a no navi SE is your best bet. The HSEs are very though to get. Don't forget that you don't really "order" your car, you just get to choose from what is shipped to your local dealers. If you buy accessories, pay close attention to what they are trying to charge you, there can be a lot of variation between dealerships.
My SE puffs air a little bit when opening or closing the doors.
I use access every time I park. When I forget to get out of that mode, however, it does bounce kind of badly when it pops out of it automatically. I will definitely never forget again, now that I read these posts.

Thanks,
Matt
Send your feedback to LR (via web site or customer service)... product suggestions can't hurt.
There are a few little things that bug me about LR3 product design, too... but overall it's great. If it was $5K less, I'd ignore the few missing things. ;-)
Thanks.
The mechanic said he reckoned all the error memories (many!) will prompt LR USA to say "just clear them and wait until it happens again - maybe then we will know /which/ connector or ECU is causing the problem". I stressed the importance of not being an experiment - we'll see.

I can always hope that this stereo, an alpine unit w/ harmon kardon tech added (strange due to the next to non-exitstent auto division) will get some of my goodies.
i know i can go aftermarket but that really isnt the same.
best
Something similar happened to me Saturday morning. I hadn't driven the car since Monday so I let it heat up for a few minutes and drove the 3 blocks to the FDR drive, our local higway in NYC. I noticed it did not come out of low height mode, figured that I wasn't driving fast enough. Once I entered the highway I got a warning that all special programs were not working and then that there was a "complete system failure." Handling was as you described. I exited as quickly as possible, shut off the engine and restarted it. It then worked fine for the rest of the weekend...
I do.
Did your HSE puffs air when parked? Mine puffs often whenr door is shut or slammed shut.
We do not use access mode often. A half dozen times at most before we were sure it was able to get into garage without using access mode.
I use access every time I park. When I forget to get out of that mode, however, it does bounce kind of badly when it pops out of it automatically. I will definitely never forget again, now that I read these posts.
SE7 with cold weather package and I can't remember what else.
2,100 miles and no issues to report. I am concerned about the repeated reports of problems and hope they are rectified.
Yes, the air suspension puffs as you open doors it but I sort of like that.
What/where is access mode???
I got the car for my wife in early December and still have about 10 buttons to decipher.
