Not at all, Freeflytim - don't be sorry for enjoying it - we are, too. We have not lost hope at all - heck, owning a '73 Land Rover Series III - as I do - REALLY gives you a sense of not knowing what's going to happpen when you go out for a drive!!
For those of you who had purchase the factory DVD entertainment system in the LR3, would you mind sharing your experience listening to the sounds through the radio aux. input?
We have been experiencing background whizz noice when listening through aux. input, and noise becomes louder when the car accelerates. Any recommandation as to eliminate this issue?? Thanks
Thank you for your response; however, there is something wrong with the link that you listed. I tried it and it doesn't connect anywhere; just tosses me out of the forum!
Do you know if the safari roof rack has a "floor" to it (above the glass roof panels)? Does it negate the sky roof (certainly when loaded, but what about when it is unloaded)?
Has anyone put the Side Steps on their LR3 and if so do they enhance or detract from the appearance of the SUV. I am also interested in anyone who has the Waterproof Seat Covers and their comments on same.
OK... I found a new one. I was talking to my mom and had the fm radio down low when I heard the distinct sound of a cd changing. I didn't really pay too much attention to it at first, but now I know it happens all the time.
I have had this happen in AUX and FM modes. I have proven that the cd player does not stop by noting where the time/track was when I switched, only to have it on the next cd or several minutes/seconds into it. The only way I have found to disable this was to hit the power off when done with the cd before switching to another mode.
Has anyone else had this happen? Try listening to a cd, then tapping FM. Listen for a cd change, or just note that it won't be in the same spot when you left off. I'd be interested to know how widespread this is.
"I hope the other wheel options become available."
You can buy the other (genuine LR) styles on eBay. I don't dare give a link, but they're not hard to find. (There are also a lot of trashy aftermarket wheels for sale.)
Correct. On HSE's stereo, the rear audio headphone jacks and controls can still function when the main audio is turned off. It's a feature. (The rear passengers can listen to the CD changer on headphones, for example... while the front can listen to the radio or, in this case, nothing at all.) Regretably, there is no "master off" switch in the front -- you'll need to make a visit to the rear controls.
Another feature that should be added: a rear audio control "lock-out" to prevent others from messing with what's playing on the main speakers.
Help.. LR3 or Lexus GX470 My wife test drove the LR3 that week and loved it. I've done a lot of research on the LR3 and am very impressed with what I have seen. I'm going to the dealer today (3rd visit)but since it's a big purchase for us I want to make sure that $ for $ it's a better SUV than the GX470. We saw the GX470 today. It's definitely somewhat more luxurious than the LR3 but with 2 kids under 4 that's not the most important thing to us.They start at ~49K..Including the 3rd row, air package and light package. Any comments would be appreciated.
Thanks to a fellow board member, I found out about an available HSE Bonatti Grey in Sacramento, CA. Purchased it, drove it home about 130 miles to San Jose, CA.
First of all, NO problems, at all. No stalling, air suspension issues, NAV, etc... all worked perfectly. I did a 10 mi test drive first, and then we did the obstable course, before making pmt... just wanted to see if any failures could be easily invoked. I did have to brake hard once as I almost tee-boned some moron pulling out in front of us. Again, all was well with tranny shiftdown etc.
I did notice that you have to get used to the accelerator... you can't just press it down a bit and hope it shifts down... the shift happens after 1-2 seconds. You have to kind of mash it to get some quicker response. So that's a bit wierd. The Harman Kardon Logic 7 Premium sound system is hardly premium. It's just basically acceptable, and there is even a slight buzz somewhere on the overhead lighting console during heavy mid-bass.
However, other than these quibbles, the ergonomics on this vehicle are phenom. The feel, the ride, the steering, everything is really quite nice. I am 6'4", 200 lbs, and on the ride up in our brand new XC70 Volvo, I got aches, and that car is known for it's comfort. In the HSE, plain comfort the whole way home.
This AM, I noticed some coolant on my nice painted garage floor, but it appears that there was too much coolant in the system and some overflowed out. The temp gauge is perfectly normal.
If this performance keeps up, I will have been very happy to make this purchase. The NAV system is sweet... I programmed it to come up with the English Lady (slight Yorkshire accent)... nice to have such fine English help along for the ride.
I can say this, having driven in a Lexus SUV, those cars are probably far more reliable. But no way are they a better driving machine... this LR3 just feels so good.
Anyway, off to climb up to 7000 ft in the Sierras. Report more when I get back from that.
Check out & compare the third row seating on both. The LR3 wins hands down! Sold my GX470 back to Lexus when they could not cure the vibration problem. Search "vibration" on Lexus GX470 forums. Have 9000 plus on my LR3 HSE7 and it is a remarkable machine.
I want to make sure that $ for $ it's a better SUV than the GX470.
"Better" is somewhat vague. A large range of factors can be included in determining which vehicle is "better" including your requirements - both tangible and intangible! Once you've looked at issues like handling, performance, off-road/hauling capabilities, reliability, cost of ownership, "luxury" and so forth then just go with what you want if there is no clear advantage of one vehicle over the other!
I can understand your dilemma in selecting a LR3 or GX470. I faced the same predicament for about three weeks and went back and forth and finally went with the LR3. Everyone's requirement are different, but here are some of the reasons I went with the LR3.
RIDE: If you want a softer ride the GX470 has it. Frankly, I prefer something more firmer with a better feel for the road. Also felt the driver's seat on the GX470 was too soft and with time would settle even more.
QUALITY: There is no question that the GX470 is put together better and with more quality materials, albeit the LR3 was satisfactory..
RELIABILITY: Although the GX470 is a Lexus it doesn't enjoy the reliability ratings enjoyed by the RX and LX. In fact Consumer Reports (Apr 05 issue) gives the GX470 and average for predicted reliability for 05. The reliability of the LR3 is yet to be determined, yet by the comments in this Forum, it appears that it will have its fair share of problems, not unusual for a first year model.
FUNCTIONALITY: LR3 wins hands down in my estimation. Love the flat cargo area with the 2nd and 3rd row seats down. Plenty of storage space (2 glove compartments) and more convenient places to place little things. The GX470 has on glove compartment and shares it with the 6 cartridge CD player. Hate the idea of removing the 3rd row seats in the GX470. Dealer told me you can't even get GX without the 3rd row seats. Didn't care for the swing cargo door on the GX470. Little noticed but a big plus were the adjustable arm rest on the LR3.
AUDIO. I thought the Harman Kardon 550 watt Logic 7 system was awesome. In my opinion better than the Mark Levinson system in the GX470. I also thought loading the CD,s in the glove compartment of the GX470 was ridiculous. Sorry, wanted to say more, but ran out of space.
Thanks for the picture of an LR3 with the Side Steps. Not bad looking at all. How far out do the Side Steps protrude? I can remember the Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator running board stuck way out and looked plain ugly.
Yes, the HSE "Premium" sound system is disappointing -- not much better than the lower version. I've never been a huge fan of these "permanent" integrated stereo implementations. Since I can't easily replace it, I'll take every chance to complain the silly thing doesn't display MP3 artist/song tags or CD Text like a $15K Scion can. ;-) What were you thinking, LR?
Maybe one of these days I'll attempt to see if the speakers or amplifiers can be upgraded successfully...
Apparently Cargo Magazine just reviewed four off-road trucks to actually check their off-road capabilities: the 2006 Hummer H3, 2005 Land Rover LR3 SE, 2005 Nissan Xterra and the 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited.
Has anyone seen this magazine and what was the outcome?
Another glitch I found yesterday in the stereo... the engine was off and I was listening to the stereo and I couldn't 'crank it up' because of 'low power mode.' I know about the 'low power mode' not letting you drain the battery. I didn't even think about it but I later started the engine and drove off. The radio was still stuck in the 'low power mode' even tho I was happily motoring along. I had to pull over, pull out the key, and let the stereo 'cycle down' for a minute for it to go back to normal.
I guess 'Pulling Over for Minute' needs to be abbreviated to ‘POM’ as it tends to cure all ills!!!!
Follow up to previous post. Definitely have a coolant leak.. appears to be a hose fitting that loses a drop every 10 seconds sort of thing.
Drive the veh up to Sierras (7000 ft+)(30 deg F) and back to sea level in San Jose. Absolutely no problems whatsoever... message center complained once this morning about low coolant and then never thereafter. I really feel at one with the road with this LR3... about the same feel I had with my S500 in sport mode. I took the LR3 offroad into a dirt forest road at 6000 ft, there was about 2ft of packed snow with some wheel ruts/trails already in place ahead of me. No problem, the LR3 just ambled forward with the traction control diverting power to different wheels as needed to maintain forward momentum. The wife/kids got all freaky and wouldn't let me go further than 100ft... it was close to dusk and we didn't know how deep the snow was further out in the trail.
DVD NAV is not too intelligent. It doesn't appear to be accurate, either the position and/or the datum. Multiple times it told me I am at the turn when I was 1/8 mile away still. Or it told me I was on some ancient Hwy 4, when I was on the modern Hwy 4 some half mile to the west. Also, the nice English lady can't keep her voice down... she's too loud when the stereo volume setting is at some normal position.
Does anyone know how to disable the kids screwing around with the rear radio station controls???
So, little nits here and there, but overall, this vehicle is quite pleasing in form and function.
p.s. my daughter who gets carsick in all of our other vehicles doesn't feel it a wit in the LR3... reason being that the seats are high up and she can see so well outside, that she keeps better equilibrium. The salesmen guaranteed that she would be cured of carsickness in the LR3, and he made good on that one!
tzo said: "Does anyone know how to disable the kids screwing around with the rear radio station controls???"
No way. I've mentined that a few times... in fact, just a few messages back:
grommet said: "Another feature that should be added: a rear audio control "lock-out" to prevent others from messing with what's playing on the main speakers."
Send feedback to Land Rover directly or via your favorite dealer. I have. (And so should anyone else that cares.) This could be added in software. If enough people complain (which I doubt), it could be added. I wouldn't hold my breath, though; maybe 2007 models might have it.
My experience with the Navigation system is positive. No maps are perfect, however. Accuracy is on par.
Grommet, I will fwd some feedback to LR. However, I can't imagine that they ignore a reasonably accurate and totally free (to LR) beta test task force - I am speaking about this forum of course. One would expect that they read this and other forums carefully to gauge public perception.
The NAV accuracy may depend on location. Datum for your area might be better than for mine. I can say that my 2000 S500 with 1st gen NAV system never got it wrong, and so far the LR3 has made a few mistakes. But the LR3 NAV has some other cool things like 3D views, more POI's, to make up for it.
I have a factory system installed. The sound is fine through the radio aux (no background noises). Only thing is, I have to turn up the volume very high. Sorry, don't know how you can eliminate your problem.
"Also, the nice English lady can't keep her voice down..."
I think there's a way to adjust the voice volume. I believe that while she's talking you decrease the volume using the steering wheel control. It'll say something like radio+5, which will be the voice volume in relation to the stereo. The dealer showed me but I soon forgot...
roverdawg, yes, I actually had dug thru the manual and made that adjustment to the min, which is Radio +1. However, it comes out sounding alot more like Radio +10 or something like that... annoyingly loud when the stereo is already at mid to higher levels. In my S500, you could adjust the voice to be at one absolute volume level, which was usually pretty low, since you didn't want to be shouted at
actually, the CD sound in the HSE is pretty good. It's the FM that is a bit scratch and staticy. The audio quality is definitely not a showstopper in any case. Just not near the best implementation of factory car audio I've seen. I am pretty sure it's the speaker drivers themselves that are the sub optimal design choice.
as reported recently, I took the LR3 into some deep snow and all went well. However, I felt that the tires weren't perhaps doing real well doing their job. I didn't notice any spin whatsoever, just that the front end seemed to wander a bit to the left and right. My perception is that better offroad tread would benefit the LR3 very well. I am looking at the Michelin Synchrones as the only thing available for this size wheel. I wish BFG All Terrains would fit, but they don't have such a low profile tire.
Anybody else take their vehicle into deep snow or mud and have impressions regarding these stock Goodyear Wranglers?
p.s. the onroad and wet performance of the Wrangler, I have no complaints... excellent tracking.
thanks for the reply. I read on some other forum discussing the same problem. It seems like most people with the system need to turn up the volume to 20-24 in order to listen to the DVD sounds (same as in my car). Some suggested the noise can be eliminated by installing some noise cancellation device. I am still waiting to hear back from the dealer on this issue. According to the dealer, LR is aware of this issue and still have not come up with an update/solution.
I had the same thing happen with mine. What I did was get a set of headphones, and plug them into both sides of the rear stereo controller. By using the MODE button, get it off of CD and onto radio. Make sure you do both the driver and passenger side.
My CD does not continue playing when I switch the head unit to radio or aux.
I finally received my Ownership benefits booklets for Canada! 10 weeks after I received the car but that's OK. Afew erors (eg references to web pages that do not exist), but on the whole, not bad. And well packaged.
I purchased my car on 2/13 and it stalled on 2/14. I was going down a slight hill. The dealer kept the car for a week, and had to have a fuel tank sent from Kentucky. They said that was the problem. Several days later, my car stalled on the freeway!!!! Talk about stress!!! Today the engineers think its the PCM Module that needed to be re-configured. This stalling thing is very dangerous! When your car stalls, the power steering is gone. If I was at 60mph.... I say beware all.
sounds like to me LR is still flying blind on what is causing this stalling behaviour. They should buy our car back and use it to debug the problem once and for all, esp since the problem happens relatively often.
When I bought mine, I saw this mandatory NHTA notice about reporting safety related problems, included in the user docs. The notice reads that if enough people report the same problem, the NHTA can force a general recall.
Hence, I think all of you owners suffering this serious issue should go thru the steps to report this stalling problem to the NHTA and have the US govt make LR respond with more alacrity here.
Also, I think the severity of stalling puts you clearly within the intent of the Lemon Law... look into it and build the documentation needed to get this monkey off your back.
That being said, I am very happy with my LR3. I just fear that the stalling problem is lurking underneath the hood and may emerge at any time.
Thinking about your stalling post, I'll say that my LR3 has this slightly odd behavior going down hill. Seems like it downshifts the tranny sort of aggressively, more than in any other car I've driven. I feel myself lurch fwd just a bit as I head down a freeway hill. I wonder if your problem is related to some strange transmission behavior.
Talked with the LRNA rep yesterday. The Bluetooth integration details for the LR3 should be out before the end of this month for dealers. On another note he mentioned that LRNA marketing were not aware the gas flap door did not lock & that the marketing department have been getting a lot of negative feedback regarding this. They can't believe it isn't there! Rumour is that a kit will be offerred to remedy the omission. Thats the rumour!
yeah, the lack of a gas cap is a biggie. Fortunately, the average dodo criminal would never suspect a new car would sport a non locking gas cap. Geez, even my 1972 Dino has a gas flap release inside! So I think we're actually pretty safe on this one
btw, in addition to leaking coolant, some transparent brownish fluid (two drops) was found on the garage floor this AM. Didn't quite feel like motor oil, could be brake fluid, just not sure. Sigh. Still, the damn car drives so fine otherwise, I tend to not get upset at these other failures. Though when is the last time you've seen a new car leak any fluid on the first day or first year, sheesh.
I have an SE7 with Navigation. Does anyone know how to "fix" the Navigation system so that you can program in addresses while driving? To me it is ridiculous that you (or your front seat passenger) cannot do this. We have a 2004 Acura TL that you can program addresses or look for points of interest while moving. It's somewhat painful to have to try to pull over if you want to program in an address, especially if you are in traffic on a freeway in L.A.
I wish all Nav features would be operable while driving, because while I understand some people might try to program while driving, there are plenty of us with helpful front seat passengers who could easily do the job. And before anyone says "use voice controls", half the time the Navigation cannot seem to understand me, so I end up tuning a radio station when what I really wanted was to display a restaurant. Argghhh...
But otherwise I love my LR3 (and no stalling or any other problems after 5,700 miles).
I just found out why my rear wiper is not working well - it streaks the window: the mechanism has seized up. The spring cannot pull it against the window becuase of this. SOme oil will fix that but it is unusual on such a new car (2 months) to start applying oil - anyone else have the same?

I absolutely agree - I just had to stop next to a very crowded freeway to program an address that someone gave me on the phone: talk about a safety hazard. I am fed up with car manufacturers babying us!
Funny. I gotta say, I've never driven a car with a locking gas cap and I've NEVER had my gas stolen. I've lived all up and down the state of California, spent significant time south of the boarder in Baja, never lost a drop. I've also never had a locked garage to keep my car in, so anyone could have walked up and stolen my gas at just about anytime in the last 20+ years. I'm actually pestered when I borrow some ones car and have to hunt around to figure out how to open the dang tank. I was kinda stoked that neither our Audi nor the new LR3 bother making you click a switch somewhere. But, if people are complaining, I'm glad LR is listening.
Say, that reminds me, anyone got any insight into the dog barrier installation : )
I think that its more a case of not having to worry about someone putting something in the tank, rather than not having to worry about the tank's contents being stolen.

FYI: The missing LR3 fuel filler door lock works like the Audi... it locks & unlocks with the doors, so it's no "trouble." Silly omission, as I've said time and time again. I do doubt we'll see a "free retrofit" anytime soon. I hope they prove me wrong.

Sorry about the link for the LR technical website. It turns out LR rearranged their website. Try this:
http://www.ownerinfo.landrover.com/extfree2viewlrprod/index.jsp
The expedition rack has five cross-bars for a "floor".
The UK site has better pictures...It looks like it has cross bars.

That being said, I am very happy with my LR3. I just fear that the stalling problem is lurking underneath the hood and may emerge at any time.
Thats the rumour!
btw, in addition to leaking coolant, some transparent brownish fluid (two drops) was found on the garage floor this AM. Didn't quite feel like motor oil, could be brake fluid, just not sure. Sigh. Still, the damn car drives so fine otherwise, I tend to not get upset at these other failures. Though when is the last time you've seen a new car leak any fluid on the first day or first year, sheesh.
I absolutely agree - I just had to stop next to a very crowded freeway to program an address that someone gave me on the phone: talk about a safety hazard. I am fed up with car manufacturers babying us!
Say, that reminds me, anyone got any insight into the dog barrier installation : )
FYI: The missing LR3 fuel filler door lock works like the Audi... it locks & unlocks with the doors, so it's no "trouble." Silly omission, as I've said time and time again. I do doubt we'll see a "free retrofit" anytime soon. I hope they prove me wrong.
(And it'll still be somewhat half-baked. Lack of Bluetooth based phone book sync & call logging being the most obvious omission...)
