If you live in the north east, where there is a lot of corrosive material on the road during the winter and early spring, it will sure come in handy. My last truck was ruined because of that. If you trade your truck in every 3 or 4 years, it won't matter much, but if you keep them for about 10 years, (like I will when I get the new one with composite bed) you won't have to worry about them rusting away. I was also told they are very dent resistant, lighter, and you don't need a bed liner with it either, but I plan on getting one. I just hope the articles written about it aren't over exaggerating!

Roads were slick today due to rain used 2wd hi almost spun the back of my truck around the front i looked over and seen the Z71 sticker almost next to me. Its alot harder to control then my S-10 when the back fishtails but boy is it fun. The locking rear is nice too i can feel the difference from no locker. When its wet i suggest keeping it in auto 4hi it is very nice.
I have a set of Helms Service Manuals for the 99 Silverado trucks that I am selling (Bought a new truck). I bought them through GM for $120 2 months ago and they are still in brand new shape.

the noise i'm hearing comes and goes and long after warm-up. It also makes a squeaking sound two pieces of metal rubbing. Sometimes it can be heard over the radio. I ordered the truck in feb and received it in apr. it had 6mi on it. I have 2 other trucks a 93 blazer (5.7)with 73kmi and a 87 gmc (5.7)200k mi both of which had less than 10mi on them when i got them and i haven't had any problems with either. i have been told that the 5.3 is a new motor and still has bugs to work out.
I read in a post a long time ago this subject has been talked about to death but I could not find where it was talked about so could somebody tell me where to find this subject or why there are so many DRLs that burn out and if GM is working on a fix for the problem. I have a 2000 2500 LT and the first week I had it I changed out my DRL bulbs and put in an amber (orange) bulb because I don't like to be like every one else. I have added a Lund interceptor bug sheild,westin stainless nerf bars,stainless rocker panel kit and that little devise to keep the low beam head lights lit when the highs are on.I also have a Lund moonvisor on order. I have been a silent observer for some time now in hopes someone would bring up the DRL subject.

My DRLs have not burned out either I just wanted to be different.And as far as safety there are a number of other vehicles that use amber instead of clear such as camaro,firebird,some GM minivans,and a few Buick cars.
my self esteem is just great. my truck is great too. as a matter of fact i own my truck free and clear. if it burps or something though, i'll just take it in to have it fixed or buy another one. no since whining about clacking noises though. not much anyone can do for it if it did make a strange noise. sure you can post about it but i don't think anyone's gonna have the answer.
BTW markbuck post a really good solution to determining whether or not tires are inflated properly. it's back a few poats though.
If the 2001 5.3L V-8 will have a 15hp increase over the 2000 series? My brother is going to purchase a 1500, but the salesman advised him to wait about six weeks and get a 2001 with the more powerful engine. However, I perused the magazines at the newsstand and did not find any information on the subject.
Any validity to this...or is this a smokescreen? Please advise me. We await the news.
for the 2001 5.3L, but I'm not really sure. I heard the 3/4 ton 6.0L will still be rated 300 horse? Hopefully they fix the visors and add some extensions...

I am looking to buy a 2500 4x4 extended cab long bed. I have heard the 2001's will have a heavy duty 2500. Does anyone know what the difference will be over the 2000 LD model.
Gone for a few days and the site passes me up. Went fishing for a few days. I actually went 4 wheeling too. Nothing huge just some sand and mudd. Truck got dirty. The offroad package is good for small trails but i dont know about bigger stuff.
I've heard that some of these front lamps leak. Internal ondensation/moisture along with the heat generated by the lamp would definitely cause premature bulb failure. One guy that noticed that condensation was always present in one of his DRLs or headlights was dissed by his dealer and was told the ever present "it is a known problem, and there is no GM fix yet" --but he took care of the problem himself by removing the lamp and bulb, then drying the inside with a blow dryer. He then applied a bead of clear silicone to seal the front seam of the lamp housing and he made sure that the seal around the bulb was good.
Tim the 3M tape worked great i only used maybe a half an inch piece i had to buy 5 yds of this stuff smallest roll they had. Only bad thing about it is peeling off the red back was a pain in the rear.
Has anyone followed up on the launch shudder, past the rear leafs and shackles. Throw in a nice load and shudder comes right back. Even from other posts it seems all they fixed on any of them was the shudder with an empty bed. Looking at all the extended warranties out there, they seem to come up a little short when it comes to the rear end. I am now at 21K, hoping to hear of a real fix before it's too late.

I own a 2000 Silverado 1500, ext cab, 5.3, 2wd, and 3.73 gears. Test drove and found no flaws, so I bought it. The first time I put a load in it (16 sheets of particle board) I noticed the dreaded launch shudder like I had experienced with my '94. Since I planned to tow our travel trailer which weighs about 6500+ pounds with a tongue weight of about 700 to 800 pounds I installed air lifts "ride control" air springs. Launch shudder is now history. Also have the on board compressor, and I recommend 5 lb sensor and when running at the minimum pressure there is little or no degradation in ride quality. When towing I run 50 - 60 lbs. Also saw on "Chrome and Crank" (a variation of Shade Tree Mechanic) the installation of an unusual type of overload on a new Silverado, and they mentioned that product reduced/eliminates shudder.
1 on the support for the steering on the passenger side. Same position as the steering box on the drivers side.
I find two of them very difficult to grease, so I replaced the zerk fitting with right angle fitting for much improved access. I also find it easier to pull the plastic cover off the bottom of the truck than to try and work around it.
On my 2500 I didn't find any grease fittings on the lower ball joints.
thanks for the 11th fitting description. i'll go check and see if i can find it, take pics and add to the pic list i've already got. where'd you get your right angle fitting? car parts store? i'm going to have to find one of them because one of the 10 i found is virtually impossible to get the zerk fitting on as you said.

All - I have an LT - with the Auto-trac. Works great! There is a strange behavior though. I pulled a stump out over the weekend, and tried out the 4WD LO for grins, and noticed something a little odd.
In 2-wheel mode - Only rear wheels propel the vehicle, with standard rear differential in operation. OK
In Auto 4WD mode - Front wheels are engaged only when rear wheel slip is detected. OK
In 4 Wheel HI or 4 Wheel LO modes - All 4 wheels propel vehicel, albeit at different speed ranges. OK, but when navigateing a sharp turn, the front tires "bark" a little, as if the front differential is locked . Not allowing the outside wheel to rotate quicker than the inside wheel.
I have not been able to test this in Auto 4wd Mode, so I can't say whether or not it happens then as well.
If this is working correctly, then I would have 3-wheel drive, worst case. For those with lockers, I would imagine that you would have true 4 wheel drive operation regardless of which wheel(s) are tractionless.
I just got back from vacation and I must say I was very pleased with the mileage I got. On my return trip, mostly highway, I got 20.7 mpg over about 450 miles. That's an X-cab, LB, 2wd, 4.8l auto, with a 190 lb cap, 2 bicycles on a hitch mount rack, 2 adults, 2 kids and a bed full of suitcases and beach stuff. I enjoyed the ride too. The truck likes to run and I had no problems in the acceleration lanes. The only downer is all the sand - makes me cringe each time I hear it in the moving parts (hinges). Also caught the end of Myrtle Beach bike week (Harleys-very cool) and the beginning of Atlantic Beach bike week (ninja bikes-also cool but not my style)

I was surprised to get a phone call from an agency hired by the Ft. Wayne assembly plant. They were calling on a Saturday of a holiday weekend too! Wanted to know how my truck was doing and asked questions about specific items on the truck. Things like wind noise, vibration, and drivetrain. When I told them about some paint issues they wanted to know the exact location and size of the flaws. I have bought quite a few cars and trucks over the years and have had lots of written surveys,and calls from dealerships regarding satisfaction; but I've never been contacted by an assembly plant. They even asked if it would be OK if an engineer called to ask more detailed questions! I was impressed that they ARE concerned about owners comments and opinions. Are you guys getting the same kind of calls?
My dad got a call like that on his 00 blazer i still havent yet on my 00 silverado but its only a month old born same place as urs. Same state as me too i am probably coming up soon on the list.
Anybody know the actual tire size for LT285/75R16's. I think it's 32", but I'm not for sure. Just used the hypertech and it list tire sizes in inches not the number off the sidewall. Thanks for the help...
I am considering replacing the rear speakers in my 2000 ext. cab. I have read that they take a 4"X6". I don't have a shop manual so am wondering if any of you do it yourselfers could give info on how that is done. The back speaker are very weak.
00 1500 LT Z71 4DR X-Cab,1700 miles,built 4-00,baught 4-26-00,no problems and no vibrations,I love it,canceled an order for a Ford supercrew for the Silverado and glad I did.
While my truck has been in the shop, I have had two Silverados on loaner. Both not having vibes. If you are buying another Z71, that would eliminate the two piece drive shaft. One part of the problem. The other problem being the over sensitive rack and pinion, not sure on that one on the 4x4. Cheap tires and aftershocks. Can't do much about that as it is related to cheapo parts from GM. You may have to upgrade those (tires and shock absorbers) OR you could do what some have already done if you don't mind the mpg...buy a 2500 (Tim likes this answer).
Whichever you decide to do...take a long test drive at all speeds. While some vibrations occur after 7-800 miles. The really bad ones can be found on the highway up to 70 mph. I test drove a '00 Yukon XL 2500 4x4 last week. Was starting to think about trading the old '00 Silverado on the spot...until reality set in. Good luck in finding yours...
Go to Crutchfield.com and they have lots of speakers for your and my truck.It's not supposed to be hard to do at all.Call them up,and you can talk to somone and ask questions. I'm going to do ALL the speakers,I don't think the stock ones are worth anything,and the head unit's gotta go too,unless it has more power than I think it does.I want someone to do all this stuff FIRST,and warn me about any problems. The stereo and the easy parking are the only two things I miss about my old Jeep Grand Cherokee.
