The shakers seem to be more the 2 piece driveshaft..aka 2WD..ext.cabs....and usually the 4.3 engine.
So if you get a 5.3 Z71...should be cool...right?
I guess even some of them have it....but always remember....the problems you hear here....are a small amount when put against all the trucks made....people come here to complain.
Take it for a LONG test drive...like 45 minutes before you buy. MOST of the time that will tell the tale or not.
..Or just get a 2500!~!.....I have yet to hear of any shake problems with those.
Mine has been trouble free for 16,000 miles and 9.5 months.
Almost 1600 mls on my 2000 Z71 ext cab sb LS. Built 4-6-00 picked up 4-29-00. No vibrations of any kind whatsoever thusfar ive taken it on a few longer trips and its great on the highway even on rough roads it rides very nice. No windnoise like many had with the ext cab. Im sure a new one would be better than your 97 trust me. I talk to alot of guys with new trucks and many have said this is better than their older (96-98) trucks. Like many have said take it for a good test drive before you buy. Test drive a few for the heck of it before i ordered i drove 4 or 5 of em none ever had any problems. Good Luck maybe wait a few months and order a 01 soon unless you cant wait or you want to take one off the lot.
Ive had mine up to hmmm about 85 handles great (slow for me). I wanted to get it up there this past weekend but to many cops on the roads. They didnt just have cars but they had helicopters too.
Carmine color update: 3 people yesterday came in to work with the carmine (1- 2 tone with pewter on bottom) One guy was in his late 60's and the other two were between 40 and 50. Hmm just reinforcing my assumption. Sorry guys
yea i know thats why i said order now im sure there will be a lil wait for 2001 because they shut the plants down and allocations im sure are low right now.
That other post got nutz. I said something about a kodak moment and Roc said something about something then this dude said something about me and Roc and then i said some stuff ( i totally forgot what i said) then next thing you know nothing is there anymore. Merideth has a quick trigger finger she dont let anything slide in. I wish i had seen what he wrote. Now il never know.
GM sticker on the driver door gives the month and year the truck was built, etc. Since I ordered my truck I had an order number and by calling gm customer service I found out the exact date it was built. If you purchase off the lot, then a good dealer can provide you with the exact date. Bob
If purchasing off the lot avoid ones with a build date on a Monday or Friday. When ordering, there is no choice. Mine was built on a Thursday and I was so glad. Just a thing with me, but I'll take my chances on better quality with fewer sub assembly workers. Bob
I have yet to pay attention to what the plug is?...have to look next time..
I have the oil and trans cooler.
Old truck had the massive radiator that the trans and oil lines went thru it as well....
This one has the mini-radiator type cooler in the grill.....to be honest I have not paid attention yet to see if it's the tranny or oil?...I think it's the tranny ..
I'll have to pay attention once more.....
Getting old...ya don't have as high of priority on certain things..ya know?
I cannot confirm the locking action of the front dif in 4lo but I can say I tested the autotrac on very steep and uneven sandstone that then turned into large river rock and the truck surpassed my expectations. I thought my '93 Silverado did well off road but this truck seemed to easily surpass it.
all - i was at the service center today. they had it up for tire rotation and alignment tweak. i showed the guy where the grease fittings are that i'm hitting and he said i was on it. so...the link above is what you'll need if you wanna do-it-yourself. (for a '00 1500 z71 anyways).
whoever asked about the vibration and didn't include ME in the "especially" part...damn you...mine was built second week of january - no vibes, launch shudder, wind noise, or other complaints...
Don't forget the 11th zerk on the idler arm support.
#5 in your picture and it's counterpart on the other side are the ones that I replaced the zerk fitting with a right angle fitting.
When you find the counterpart to #5, follow that idler arm to the front. The support for it has the hidden zerk fitting, and it points to the middle of the truck. It is much easier to see if you pull off the plastic air baffle (5 bolts with 15mm heads).
2000 GMC Z71 5.3 L 4.10 rearend, tires changed to BF Goodrich 285/74R16's on stock rim - no shutter, no vibrations - just the best ride I've ever had out of a truck. Mine was built March 20, picked up April 1. Over 2000 miles now, cruise set on about 75 to 78 for a 7 hour trip, and about an hour of driving at 85, never a problem one.
For swobig and gmcsierra - tire size with HPPIII. The calculations show 32.8", but when you do the rolling diameter test mine confirmed what others already had posted - 32" even on the diameter.
I have not confirmed my speedometer with any other vehicles, but per the calculations with the tranny gears and rear end, my RPM's are dead on for the speed I'm going. I read an article on the net that gave me most of the way to calculate the RPM for the speed. I tweaked it and created an Excel spreadsheet that has all the cacluations in it. I'll be glad to share it with anyone that wants it. I won't guarantee its accuracy, I'd actually like someone else to confirm what I've done. If you want it, send me an email.
coupon from July HotRod(good thru 7/31/00) or May 29 AutoWeek(good thru 6/30/00.) The last quote I had was about $221 delivered with the 33% off. The IAS are not listed in the online catalog, so "talk" with a live on line parts specialist to get the latest price from their website. If you check back through previous posts here you will notice that the price can vary, so checking back more than once might be a good idea. Good luck.
thanks for the info. I was trying to find the mm per inch, but these tires manufactures must overstate the "actual" size. Seems silly, but I know my 285's are only about 9.5" not 11. I came up with 32" also doing the rolling test and just wanted to be sure - 34 is way off (again stupid overstating tire size). Thank you both for the info.
Got a 160 degree t-stat to go along with the Hypertech. Any bad side to putting this in???
Thanks for all the information here! Have had our '99 LT Ext for about 1 1/2 years and put over 30K on it. Wife got a new 2001 PF and now that I have the truck back its going in the shop to take care of some issues. Got a repair campaign letter from Chevy yesterday concerning the front brake lines. Seems that some have moved as much as an inch and come into contact with the rim, very bad!!! One thing I have figured(southern slang here) while reading about others problems I have tried not to make a big deal out of trucks problems. Don't think I have the wheel shudder but I do have the engine clanging. I also have an issue with the throttle hanging when released and then reapplied. Was fixed before but they probably just WD-40'd it. Friend of mine has a new 2001 Z71 and I really think Chevy made some great improvements. Gotta get the DRL's replaced, wind noise in dash/windshield, engine clang, throttle and replace the windshield! Went to Talladega(very southern) last and had a rock hit it.
BTW, to Tim and Ryan, glad to hear your Metallica fans and drive Chevy trucks! And I can forgive you for trying to type/talk southern, but it aint bad down south.
Thanks again for all the useful info, keep posting.
Haven't had time for this board..out enjoying the truck and camping. So far everything is good..no launch, no shudder, and no blown out DRL! Our 2000 Ext SB 4 door, has been a dream (oh, gosh..I am sooo glad, and feel fortunate we got the 4 doors). The Duraliner is great, stuff stays where we put it, yet slides when we want it..and love being able to have layers! We decided against the Leer cap (after looking at the ARE, we had to go with that!). The paint job is wonderful on the cap, and it looks great with the truck..when hubby pulled into the campground, after picking it up (I thought he was going to the store..didn't realize they had called and it was in)I didn't even recognize that as my truck pulling in back of the trailer! The place that we ended up buying it from, threw in the slider, in case we ever get one (truck was ordered with one, but it didn't come in with it), and the electric light on the inside..and what a nice place to do business.)It is very well made...love the way it closes, with the two "door" latches, and screened push out windows. Hubby put the scooped bow tie back mudflaps on today (although Chevy said they aren't suppose to be used with running boards or flares..we have the running boards, no reason the back flaps couldn't be used with them)...and the bug guard should be in Friday (Interceptor..I'm sure I could have gotten it cheaper on line, if I could have found it!). The running boards are holding up well, and I like how they are close to the truck body.First oil change today (and a free one from the dealer). Went with the Mobil synthetic based on what you guys suggested..we know diddley about trucks, so I'm trusting you all. What a joy owning this truck has been..I no longer miss the suburban, that's for sure. It didn't ride anywhere as smooth as this truck does! Nice to see familiar names, and some new ones.
No you can't tell the date built from the VIN, only the model year. I just looked it up in my new service manual.
But something else caught my eye. They have over 50 pages for "Vibration Diagnosis and Correction" right up front in Volume 1 (2000 version manual). I guess the factory was doing something after all.
headlight controller from R&D Truck & Auto Accessories. Had mine for about 3-4 months. One night last week tried them out just to check. Now the thing doesn't work at all as either the high lights or the low lights come on and not both. Emailed the company with a question on trying to troubleshoot the problem. The return email was that a new one was in the mail and all they requested was that I return the old one so they could examine it to find out what was wrong. Got the new one in the mail today and was really impressed with the service...for those of you that need all four headlights on at the same time.
Kyle, thanks for the pictures of the grease fittings. Greased my '00 Silverado LT Z41,(5.3l, 3.73 rear end) yesterday at 2250 miles (over 3 months with all city driving, avg 13.9 mpg) and changed oil with 10w-30 Havoline. Replaced the Nbr 5 (Kyle's numbering system) fitting on passenger side with the right angle fitting (purchased one at NAPA, used 6mm threads with 8mm wrench). All others are readily accessible after removing the plastic brush-guard skirt (5 15mm bolts). The oil was quite dirty looking (no feel of grit however) and very few metal particles on the magnetic pickup. Noticed hydrauic looking fluid on bottom of idler arm (the thing with the nbr 11 fitting) and have not been able to trace the source. Also noticed the red fluid on the seams of the front transfer case. Will attempt to tighten the bolts holding the case halves together to see if that stops the seepage. Fred
I to was impressed with R&D for their quick turn time when I put in my order for the head light controler,it took only three work days to get it.Put in order on Tuesday and had it in my hand and installed on Friday. And a three year warranty on this part is outstanding for an electric part.
fred... your welcome on the pics. i hope to post the number 11 fitting the next time i get it in the air. gotta find it. you know, i was wondering about replacing the fitting on the number 5 and 10 sites. when you pull the old fitting off, does like, all the grease in the fitting come flying out? i was considering doing that, and i appreciate you letting me know the size fitting too. how did you attack it? laying on your back on the ground and reaching up. or can you get at it reaching down from the top of the engine compartment. i just know it's a cramped spot.
all - just got my wife a '99 gmc jimmy two days ago. 'course she's happy...got leather, sunroof, etc. nice truck...great price...beats the hell out of what she wanted originally. before we started shopping, she wanted a 4runner, pathfinder, or 4-door "mom-car". well, after a little looking around, of course, she came to the conclusion that gm was the way to go. her final two selections were the jimmy and the new chevy malibu...which is a nice car at a great price if you haven't looked. sorry for the lapse from the silverado topic. roger you out there? i'll consider myself scolded! hehe kyle
got a great deal on mobil 1 synth 5w30 at a local parts store. 5 quarts of M1 5w30 AND a M1 filter for $25! so, got 2 of those for the next oil change on my 'rado and the wife's jimmy, and then 2 more quarts separate since they're 6 qt crank cases. two M1 synthetic oil/filter changes for $56. that ain't too shabby. also got 3 quarts of M1 75w90 gear oil for the rear axle. guy at the gm service center had a '99 'rado. highly recommended dropping the rear axle oil within the first 10k miles, and replacing with synthetic. said that will last for at least 100k miles then. just need to check it every so often.
I changed mine laying on the ground under the front of the truck. It is not difficult.
There are basically two different sizes of zerks fittings, 1/4" (SAE) and 6mm (Metric) and these new trucks are metric. I changed both #5 and #10 and like the accessablility much better.
Hey Tim, I wasn't bothered by the southern thing, hell I know it all to well. Left my truck with service at dealer, what do you think about the 30k service. I'm looking at about $240 for the work. The only thing I think it needs is the injectors to be cleaned. Seems a bit sluggish in the morning. Oh yea, on the limited slip diff issue. If one bought their truck w/o it, me, would a mini spool do the trick like in older muscle cars? I'm sick of the dogleg spinning when I turn right on a incline!! :-) Danog
two of my Edelbrock IAS shocks from UPS. Only two out of four ordered from carparts.com. I ordered them on May 5, and have just now received half of my order. If not for the 33% off there is NO WAY I would ever order anything from these guys. Who knows how long it will take to actually get my whole order. They originally said "should ship within 48 hours" but then told me after my order had been processed that the approx. shipping date would be May 25 for all four. They shipped two of them May 26. They give an approx. shipping date on the other two of June 2. Not what I would call honest service.
You don't want to run a mini spool on the street. That is a locked rearend, with no differential to allow on wheel to go faster than the other around corners.
Last week, I offered some information/questions about some features I found on the WIECK photo site about the new 2001 GMC C-Series. Talked to the truck guy at the dealer and found more information on the GMC Sierra Web site. The CD changer, volume controls on the steering wheel, color coded front bumper, etc will be available in the fall on a model that the dealer's truck guy described as a Denali-ed version of a Sierra. He says it is aimed at the luxury truck market. Check out http://www.gmc.com/sierra/index.html to see more.
I can hear it already: Luxury truck. Is that an oxymoron?
Werking, Genea3, Vince4, I am new to this board. I have seen posts in the past that talk about the same noise I get in my windshield area since I have installed my Lund Bug Deflector. I like the look of the Lund and would rather fix it than switch to another brand. Can anyone explain how to fix this?? Thanks
i think it was vince that mentioned a bead of silicon around the windshield that stops it. i'm not sure. i have a slight rippling sound with my bugflector II but it goes away when i adjust the volume on my radio...imagine that...
The noise you hear is caused by the air flowing over the deflector and getting under the windshield rubber trim, the trim lifts up and pops back down.
The cure is simple. Either take an RTV adhesive and run a small bead under the side trim (the rubber trim on both the driver's and passenger's side) or a thin double sided tape under the gasket. I've done both, both work and maybe the RTV is easier if you have a large tube in a caulk gun to dispense it.

About the 2wd trucks, remember, it is a completely different truck. Not only the rack and pinion, but coil springs in front also.
