322K miles? Car isn't hardly worth anything at this point. Maybe $1,000. Very nervy price. It's not like this is a 98 year-old man with money that you're marrying. When this car has a sudden coronary, you end up with the bills, that's it.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,639
That Tacoma dealer is kind of a CL spammer, putting his top of the market prices out there pretty much daily.

11.5K for an untouched 60 Pontiac 4 door post that needs a bit of love? Looks like a crackhead seller. What's it worth, 3 grand maybe?

The Reo is interesting, in a prewar money pit way. For a grand, maybe.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,639
I got around that much for my 300SE, but it had a mere 200K miles on it.
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
Big difference between 200K and 322K.....some NEW cars don't even make it to the DIFFERENCE in mileage between your car and the car @ 322K !!!!

I know it often irritates people, but I sincerely believe that a car with over 300K on it is not worth anything but it's weight in scrap. I suppose if you could show evidence of a complete restoration that would be different.

re: REO -- that's a good looking car but it's still a 4-door, not an open car, so one has to be sober about taking on such a huge project, even though it is a highly regarded car by the old-timers in the hobby.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,639
Yeah I was kind of joking. For the same money, I'd take the lower mileage car...and my old car had nearly every receipt since new with exceptional maintenance, excellent cosmetics, I was the second owner etc...I am certain it is still going strong, those late 6cyl W126 don't die easily.

NICEEEEE job on that 914. Can you feel the love?

Yep, off to the wrecker for that baby.

That 914 almost looks like a good deal compared to this

With some new upholstery that Lafayette would make a good daily driver. Just kidding, but it looks like the body is in good shape, given the car's age.

Am I remembering correctly, that the LaFayette was manufactured by Nash?

Regarding the Renault, I think that model was called the Florida. These were based on the Dauphine, and weren't too good even in their prime. It takes some nerve to call this particular one a nice hardtop/convert, and a nice restoration project. I think this should be flat bedded to the nearest junk yard ASAP. Most junk yards would probably not even accept it.
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
In 1937, it wasn't MADE by Nash, it WAS a Nash. So really he's selling a rusted '37 Nash for $3,000. Well good luck.

I've seen NICE ones of these sell advertised for $5,000--$6,000.

It's "rare" for all the wrong reasons. Nobody wanted one back then, and they still don't.

The Sonnett is indeed nice, but with so few in existence, how would you determine a fair price price to pay? Also, where would you find parts?
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
It might be rare but the Sonnett seems to pop up for sale quite a bit. It's an odd duck of a car, very noisy with a rough V-4 engine and the notorious Saab 96 transmission woes---but kinda fun in an old-fashioned way. They feel more like a kit car.

The values are fairly well-known among the few people who want one of these---I'm thinking $6,500 is pricey, more like $4,500--$5,000 for a really nice one that isn't making funny transmission noises. Any problems or cosmetic issues and the price drops like a rock.

Parts are around in the subterranean tunnels of Saab-dom.

RE: Porsche 914 -- these are excellent autocrossers and very good vintage racers as well.
  • texasestexases Member Posts: 11,158
Re: the Sonnett - you've just confirmed some ancient memory of mine, with a Sonnett driving by sounding like a poorly running chain saw...
  • colloquorcolloquor Member Posts: 482
The original Sonnet used the 3-cylinder 2-stroke, but the one pictured used the Ford Taunus V4. And, parts are very hard to find, except for those hardcore SAAB-philes that are willing to search near and far for parts.
  • texasestexases Member Posts: 11,158
M5 - I might be interested at 100k miles, but 250k?? Big $$ ahead for that one...
  • andre1969andre1969 Member Posts: 26,109
I like that '64 Catalina Safari. Did they actually start putting THM400's in them in '64 though, or did they still use that SlimJim/Roto Hydramatic thing? I'd always though 1965 was the year they switched over to the THM400, but I guess they could have started phasing them in sometime in 1964.

Even if that tranny isn't original, it's probably a change for the better!
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
M5---BIG money---if you can find anybody to work on it. It's a strange duck. Check for rust behind the tires in the wheel wells.

SAAB SONNETT---it must be "synchronicity"! Went to a friend's Porsche shop and lo and behold their apprentice is selling his Saab Sonnett sitting out front. Bright orange, drive it home for $2,500 (no thanks).

Also saw a really NICE Peugeot 505 sedan, blue, automatic, for sale for $1200 or b/o (I bet she'd take $800). Good luck finding parts or a mechanic however.

Seems everyone is unloading their "orphans".

Buick 4DR hardtop: Lotta car for not much money. If it's really nice, price is okay.

'68 Benz 280 convertible 2.8 -- man, is that guy out of touch with the market. He'd be lucky to get $40K, so he's a mere $20,000 over priced. "Honey, is the phone broken?" LUCKY to get $40K if it needs cosmetics. Color looks wrong, too.

    GET BEHIND ME SATAN!

Saw a 1987 Porsche 928 S4 for sale, 5 speed sunroof, very nice condition. My price is $10,000. This thing spins the tires in just about any gear you can pick.

The downside? Well I asked my friend the Porsche mechanic "What happens if that tricky timing belt breaks on me?"

He didn't even look up from his workbench: "Um....you throw the car away".

    (He wasn't laughing either).

I noticed that about the 280SE color too...it doesn't look right. I am not familiar with the color. If it's an incorrect color, that's a huge dealbreaker for MB people.

That Jeep is amusing...must be a Seattle diesel greedmeister who moved south. And I see it's a Renault unit, I bet it is very reliable!

'Even though they have had bad reputations for being old tech, this is something I have wanted for a long time, and I picked up this one this morning.

Oh, a Chevy station wagon. I've always liked station wagons! :shades:
  • oregonboyoregonboy Member Posts: 1,650
"Uncommon mopar" looks sorta like a Dodge bubbletop. Kinda cool. :)

"This is wrong on several levels"... whoa!!! another Chevy station wagon. Can't say anything good about this one. :(

I always liked the lines of this model, even though I guess they are not very sporty. This looks really decent for the money and could doubtless be turned into a fun project car. 81 Toyota Celica GT - $750

This is cool, and again, really cheap. Heck, you could just park it in the drive and use it as a guest room. Your neighbors will love you. 1962 international harvester

    '81 Celica - Same here, compared to that year's Corolla/Cressida/etc. it's light-years ahead. A simple, reliable car.
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,794
I like it! GM should have done that one.

Worst I ever saw like this was a Gen 1 caravan converted into a PU, with an obviously homemade plywood bulkhead, with a window taped into it.

Datsun roadster - that has to be one of the most complete, technically detailed listings I have ever seen, with little of the exaggeration you typically get. All was well until I scrolled down to the pictures - sorry, they should have gone with some other color (Any other color!), and the white wall tires do it no favors, either (at least that's easy to fix).
  • qbrozenqbrozen Member Posts: 33,799
Sorry, but I don't think I'll ever understand the appeal of a 928. It could be the best driving car in the world for all I know, but if I can't stand to look at it, it just ain't worth it to me.

Mercedes Diesel --- but....but....what about "these babies go for 500,000 miles no problem"?

Hmmm....'bad luck' eh? Sounds like my nephew who coyly phrases his own mistakes like "the key got itself lost".

Datsun 1600 --- sweet little car, looks like a great resto and worth the high price if he did what he said he did. You'd never be able to duplicate it for $10K. Of course, it's not an Austin Healey, but what the hey, the price is right. You can't even get a sharp MGB for that money anymore.

The BMW/AMG venture -- yes, very little is known about this car, and, as you can tell, there are no easy ways to identify it as a BMW. I think this was the intention, to make detection impossible, lest the brand names be diluted in the public's mind. Rare, rare car, and worth a fortune I'm sure ;)
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,639
It's also an incognito AMG car, as I am certain there is not a single AMG-branded bit on that car. It could be a prototype, and therefore worth something, maybe MB would buy it back for the big museum in Stuttgart :P

Wrong on the brand and the trim...people are so smart in these parts. That car is as AMG as my socks.

I know where there's a 1983 Porsche 928. It was dropped into Lake Michigan only once.

    Who's the U-Boat Commander?

The problem I had with the 928 was that the olny ones I ever see are automatics.
  • andre1969andre1969 Member Posts: 26,109
Cool...so you ended up buying it then? It may be old tech, but once a car starts getting older and miled up, that's not necessarily a bad thing.
  • andre1969andre1969 Member Posts: 26,109
If that '64 Dodge 880 was closer, I'd be tempted to go look at it. I've always liked those. It's really rare that I see a 2-door hardtop. The 4-door sedans seem to show up all the time at the Carlisle Mopar nationals, and an occasional 4-door hardtop will, as well. I always thought the 880 was a good looking car, one of the best looking Mopars of that era. It escaped the styling damage inflicted on those shrunken '62-64 Furys and Polaras, and I thought it was more tasteful than the '62-64 Chryslers, as well.

That hardtop roofline was introduced in 1960 on the Chryslers and DeSotos. I think it still looks good with that '64 Dodge sheetmetal.
  • texasestexases Member Posts: 11,158
I never have seen one of those 880s. Here's another:

I suspect if you came out here to look at cars, you'd come back with more than you could handle :P

And that earlier Camarocamino in Spanaway...indeed. It would have to be there or Marysville.
