Speaking of Minis, on the way to work this morning I saw a Mini Cooper with a split rear hatch. It was pretty cool looking with the little wipers on each side. I never saw one like that before. Maybe I just never paid enough attention.

Clubman is neat, but when I priced it out with all the goodies I would like on it, it came out to $33,250!! :surprise:

I, too, prefer the increase usability of the Clubman over the regular Mini .. in addition to the split rear doors, there is an extra "doorlet"on the passenger side, similar to the old Saturn S-series coupes.

But, like Shifty, when you start adding up the options, they get pretty pricey pretty quick. The local Mini dealer had a slightly used one in Blue last year for something like $25K.

Mavericks are at the bottom of my '72-era cars to have list, certainly behind the Nova and the Duster/Dart. Look up "nondescript" in the dictionary, you'll find a picture of a Maverick...of course the Festiva is off the list...

Maverick----hmmm--UM!! 6 cylinder automatic with bench seats and four wheel drum brakes. It doesn't get much better than that

TR6 -- paint job looks like a tape job---engine compartment isn't even done. Not a good sign.

MGB -- rubber bumper? Kill Mongo, Kill.

Festiva -- you know, a friend of mine bought one of these, put in a canvas sun roof, re-did the interior, put on some really good tires and sport shocks.....and it still really sucked.

After dealing with a couple of scammers and nothing else but crickets, I gave up. Dealer gave me top trade so I let him have it.

Now driving a Black Pearl Elantra Touring SE w/5spd. Like a shifter Kart with a sports wagon body. :shades:

I actually kinda like that Maverick, because of its plain, honest simplicity. But yeah, if I could have my choice of any 1972 vehicle, a Maverick would be at the low end of my list. A Nova or Dart is really a lot more car. I think 1972 is the last year that I really liked the Dart. It still had kind of a tough look to it, with a bit of a shark-nose of front (if that's the right term...the style where the front-end angles back at the headlights). The 1973 started growing a little beak, and just seemed a bit fussy in comparison.

I think my top choice in '72 would be something like an Impala or LeSabre convertible. Big-block, please. And power-everything!

Who would take that lease take over on the Mini? That payment is crazy high. No wonder the person wants to get out of it. I did a quick build and had a tough time getting over 33K (including NAV @ 2K not mentioned on this car) without adding all kinds of stupid accessories. I would think original MSRP was 30K for that car. My ride was over 35K and my lease payment is over $65.00 less than the mini (only taxes and first payment down).

TR6: Car is an all original numbers matching 4spd.
i can't stress how important this is on a TR6. There are just so many clones running around.

festiva: flagged for removal. Geez... was it really that offensive?

MGB: ok, unloved and uncared for ... but for $1100, it could be a good fun/value equation.

Maverick: I'm really digging it, personally. I've had that powertrain combo in the past and it is adequate and quite reliable. But... the price? uh-uh.

Buyout is $17k probably plus taxes, so aftert everything is said and done it'll be about $30k for this specific unit. That's quite a bit!

EDIT: And yeah for $530/month, you'd probably be able to lease a BMW 3 series.

That is what I was thinking, either the leasing program was terrible or they just got hosed. You would probably know better than me, but in cases where there is a decent leasing program a 30K car should be around 400.00/month with taxes and first payment down at signing (36month/12K)

That looks like the 250-cid inline 6-cylinder in that Maverick. My Dad had a 1978 Ford Granada with that same engine. I recall it being rather reliable, decent on gas, and very easy to service.

If a residual is high then that payment should get you a $35k-$40k vehicle with minimal or zero down.

Oh and I would love the clubman if they would offer it without the contrasting strips for the rear hatch. I just don't think I could get over how stupid those look and and as far as I know they are not an option. You can pick two different color stripes but you have to get the stripes. I would have to have them removed if they are vinyl or repainted.

even funnier than the price is the notion that anyone else in the world would want a dozen non-running XKEs. If I had $200k to spend, it might be just as wise to buy rust and oil, if they were available put together as a 'commodity'.

12 parts cars is pretty much what you are getting there - you might get two runners out of the group, but you'd never want to restore them. You can do better for 16K+ a pop.

I think you'd have to be a freakin' lunatic to even contemplate paying an amount even remotely close to $200,000.

If the person was serious about selling this lot, he should not treat Jaguar collectors with contempt for their common sense.

For one thing, nobody much wants 2+2s, for another, the restoration costs on an E-Type are pretty bone-crushing.

While E Types can be valuable when restored, they aren't *THAT* valuable, and in fact, they have dropped in price from their heyday.

Hard to say what a sane bid would be. Also hard to understand:

1. Why they would attempt to sell the whole lot together. They'd get more separately.

2. Why they can't even properly identify the cars

3. Why they don't clean them up.

Bizarre from start to finish. :confuse:

...the entire 'auction' is ludicrous. The seller just wants to dump the lot, clearly, which we all understand on a certain level, but, yes, he'd get more per car than as a lot, cuz, who's gonna want all of them (or have space for them, or have the bucks and blah, blah, blah?). It's just silly. And, damn, how'd he get them parked so closesly?

This almost makes me mad. Reminds me of when I lived on the Sausalito waterfront. Certain guys would horde lovely and historically significant old wooden boats and just ruin them by letting them rot outdoors or in the water. Would they sell to a caretaker? OH NO...."I'm gonna fix that boat up and sail around the world".

The trade price was good. I would have kept it if I had owned it since new, but as the third owner I was continually finding issues from earlier owners. There was not a thing wrong with it when I traded it, but it will only be a matter of time.

The new ride is fun, but I do miss the torque of that 4.3L. Don't miss the 20 mpg back and forth to work though. Getting over 30mpg with the Hyundai.

for an NOS 1957 DeSoto fender? My mechanic found one, for something like $475. Mine has bondo around the headlight bezels, and my mechanic said that it would be cheaper to just replace the fender completely than to bother trying to patch the existing one.

Now, this isn't something I'm going to have done right away, but I'm thinking it would be a good thing to have around, for when I eventually decide to get the car repainted.

I'm going by the shop after work tonite, to check up on my DeSoto. I'm bringing the camera, so I'll take pics and post 'em when I get a chance.

Used fenders are usually valued by "hours"---in other words, they are described by salvage yards in terms of how many hours to get them straight and clean. This is a handy guide, because then you can calculate the going labor rate at your local body shop. So you compare the hours in your present fender with the hours estimate in the used fender and figure if the price, shipping, etc is worth it.

Another consideration is the time needed to fit the used fender, in case it has also been tweaked sometime in its life.

Sure you can repost---but of course, like you, I don't know how to come up with a real world number, because so much is not described.

I'd want to know how bad the rust is, what parts are missing, how original the cars are, and which cars are automatics. This is the only rational way to appraise a collection like this----not on its potential future value, but as it sits, right here, right now.

"Salivating" is almost a sure sign of getting hosed in the near future. Motivating, on the other hand, is a good thing because it has a brain powering it.
