are worth having? i can see using them for the
undercarriage and such, but how 'bout the rest of
the truck?
Kyle, (BCO) i'm with you on the 265's. like oby
said, you should end up with more warraty also.

To the left of the 12 o'clock position, fresh air or recirc is available. If you only push the recirec button, and not the A/C button , the A/C is still on.
Try this; turn the selector to the left and press recirc. The light confirms selection. Then slowly rotate the selector knob clockwise. As you pass the 12 o'clock position, the recirc light goes off on the fresh air light is on. If you rotate back to the left, the recirc light comes back on.

When you are ready to get new tires you should consider LT tires, not the P-series you currently have.
The LT 9(Light Truck)tires are much stronger than the P (Passenger car) tires that you currently have.
I know everyone wants to badmouth Firestone right now, but I'm very happy with the Firestone Steeltex tires on my truck. They have held up very well to the dirt and gravel they have been abused with. 25,000 miles and they look about 1/2 worn.
Firestone makes the Steeltex in an LT265 size.
My other choice would be Michelin LTX ATs.

Buy american, Goodyear or Cooper, IMHO.
235/75R15.
Just came back from Firestone. They inspected some serial # or some other number on the inner side of the tires. My Firestone Wilderness AT's 235/75R15's are on the recall list. Looks like I'm getting a new set of tires.
They gave me a list of replacement tires that I could get. I opted for the Bridgestone equivalent to the Wilderness AT's.
Does anybody have any thoughts on these replacement tires they offer for the recalled tires?
This should up the sale value of my truck when and if I ever can get my 2001 Silverado with two-tone paint!

although i wonder what RPM's will do on a 2500 with the .74 OD and 4:10's at 80?
Maybe there is a reason it has 245's....
Babs,
no you didn't have the ac on recirc on defrost...once you get 3 clicks or so into floor/def...you can't have recirc...if you did..how would the same air inside defrost the windows?
Glad the chat picked up.....I was too busy...glad yawl enjoyed it..

Same thing happens with Goodyear, Kelly and private brands made by Goodyear.
Firestone is a good tire. Lack of maintenance and high heat will cause problems on ANY tire.

I have to pay $125 to have them trade for it (the cost of someone taking one of their trucks & bringing mine back). They aren't making much so I'm happy to pay the charge - I know its an extra cost to them.
They are going to get the truck tomorrow (Thurs) and it should be in my driveway on Fri. getting its first coat of Zaino.
Anyway David I just wanted you to know there is an option (dealer trading). The bigger dealer probably has more clout in getting someone to trade. There are a lot of two tone 2001's out there.

Wish someone made billet aluminum ones or something. By the way, hand tighten the caps after doing the rtv thing. Tighten in the same sequence as the lug nuts. I just tightened until the tabs clicked in the second groove. (All just felt snug by hand) I let the rtv dry overnight.
Haven't had them back off yet so I am taking the service departments word on ease of removal.

Ok a question. What are the benefits of synthetic oil??? I was told by someone to use it and itll stop my clicking noise (ticking) in my engine. Just wondering if anyone knows if itll work Thanks

put a whopping $60.00 worth of tires on the truck
that the upgraded shocks they charged for when
adding the tow package are probably just as cheap
as well. last 2 chevys i've owned i put KYB's on

You are kinda making me jealous by getting your 2001 Silverado with two-tone by Friday.
Mine is probably going to get here by Friday too.......Friday December 29th that is.
Last Thursday I went to the 7th largest Chevrolet dealer in the US. Gave the salesman a copy of my vehicle detailed sheet that I got when I tried to order my Silverado two-tone thru a smaller local dealer. He said he'd look around for an equivalent truck and try to order it too. He also said he'd get back to me on Friday or Saturday. Funny thing, I haven't heard from him since.
If you do get your truck on Friday, take it for a long drive and then get back to us with all the details about it....how it drove and what options it has. I will be waiting anxiously to hear about it.

The computer is set to meet federal emission standards. This is accomplished by some fancy hardware: O2 sensor, knock sensor, catalytic converter, and your computer. Depending on length of pushrod and throw of the crank shaft, every engine has a set amount of rotation before and after top/bottom dead center where the top of the piston is nearly motionless. This is where spark advance comes in to play.
Fuel burns at a constant rate no matter how fast your engine is turning. If the ignition cycle starts too soon then you loose Hp because the engine is working against itself (pumping loss). If the timing is too slow then the expanding gasses chase the piston. This also causes a loss of Hp because the engine is pulling the piston down (again a pumping loss). The computer (and why I love 'em) constantly monitors rpm,the O2 sensor, and the shock sensor to adjust spark advance and fuel for optimal performance throughout the rpm range. Mechanical systems could only manage this for spark advance in two narrow bands.
Octane prevents fuel from igniting and is useful for preventing autodetonation. That's about all its good for. Octane does not make fuel burn hotter or with more energy. The purity of the fuel you burn is the only factor that would change the amount of energy released from the same volume of fuel. Gasoline engines (contrary to popular belief) use the same ratio (ppm gas:air) no matter how fast you are going. The fuel injectors, throttle body injectors, and carburators meter fuel as a function of air volume. That ratio is about .6623 parts fuel to air.
Most automakers set their product at a slightly lower ratio due to emission standards and average quality of gasoline. Getting more fuel air MIXTURE into your cylinders is the key to better performance.
Sorry for the long post and for beating this dead horse. I just hate to see people wasting money on higher octane gas for a false perception. Older and modified engines may need higher octane to prevent knock but new engines since about 1985 have been designed from the ground up to run 87. Bottomline: if you think your vehicle runs better on higher octane spend the money. You probably don't need it because the engine is engineered to run on 87. Do what makes you happy.

From the Ford Web site's document entitled "Ford's Response To Firestone Recall":
Maintaining tires at the appropriate air pressure is necessary to protect tires. Underinflated tires deteriorate more rapidly than tires that are properly maintained and are at an increased risk of tread separation, blowout or other failure.
At the request of Firestone, Ford has evaluated the performance of these tires at 30 psi and has determined that the vehicle maintains good performance characteristics at this higher pressure. Ford recommends that Explorer and Mountaineer customers with 15" Firestone tires maintain their tire pressure in the range of 26-30 psi.
30 psi is a higher pressure? I couldn't find any pressure specifications on Firestone's Web site for the affected tires, but the equivalent sized BFG All-Terrain T/A's have maximum tire pressures of 50 psi for "C"-ply tires and 80 psi for "E" tires. Almost sounds like Ford was indeed sending these tires out the door underinflated. I wonder how long it will take for the lawyers to realize that Ford has deeper pockets than Bridgestone/Firestone?
Also, the Firestone Web site lists only the Steeltex as being OEM for GM trucks/SUVs, yet a number of people have posted here that their truck came with Wilderness AT as the original tires; I beleive this was mainly on '99 1500's. This seems to imply that GM dropped the Wilderness for the '00 models. Did they find out something and aren't telling us?

Good catch, was reaching way back for that ratio and stoicheiometric was in fact what I was getting at. Ping or knock occurs when the combustion waves collide. Advancing the timing to start combustion prior to autodetonation is the answer. Retarding advance increases the problem. Of course there are limits to how much advance can be applied and that's where uping your octane level comes in. I'm curious as to why you think retarding the advance is the answer.
Can't comment on the service manual as I don't have it. Given that the Vortec was originally a high performance, top end engine, modified for this application, I could see 91 as the recommended fuel. My Sierra, '00, 4.8 runs great on 87, achieves 16-18/20-22 with 87, and hasn't given me a lick of trouble. I hadn't seen the need to try a higher octane (especially with prices the way they were) but might experiment with it now.

Ok...what goes with all this tire inflation controversy?? My rig is 00,LT,5.3 Extended with the Firestone Wilderness AT 265's Aluminium wheels. I've got 10000 miles on her now and they are performing quite nicely keeping the tire pressures as posted on the door sticker. 35 and 40 pounds, I believe. I've read throughout this forum that a lot of you are running as low as 28 psi with the same tires! Good Lord, isn't that an awfully soft ride? I don't get it. What pressure should we be running?
I saw on the news tonight that Firestone is only allowing returns on the 235 size and in "phase one" areas...I'm in phase three, and it could be months until they get around to us. Hell, even though my tires are performing well, I'll take a new set any day. If not, then I'm still going to put on a set of Michelins when these wear out.
RYAN: To answer your post a few days back, I did in fact purchase that tool box made by Contico through Cabelas. If I remember correctly, it was around $70.00 and it fits nicely along side the tire well and holds a lot of equipment. Trouble is though, I have to remove it when my Tonneau cover is on...damn!

Maybe I'm confused, but my shackles took about 20 minutes each side to do for a total of one hour counting lifting with the jack and retorque of all tire lugnuts. Am I missing something here?
