Actually I'd go with hudson. This is a Newport, not a New Yorker, because the latter had a horizontal chrome bar across each of he panels of the grille, whereas the picture you posted doesn't, and is therefore the Newport.
On the right side of the street (starting with the first completely visible car):
Renault 4CV, Citroen 2CV, (don't know), Ford(?), (don't know), Citroen 2CV, (don't know), (don't know), Volkswagen Type 2...there's a Citroen van and a 2CV in the back, but can't name the rest of them
Driving down the street: Citroen DS
On the left side of the street (starting with the first completely visible car):
(looks familiar, but don't know), Citroen DS, (don't know), and can't make out the rest of them.
Ok - on the left; Talbot-Lago(?), Citroen DS19, Peugeot 403, next car looks like a Reanult Fregate, but may be too small. Behind that, a Renault Dauphin ? car in middle of road is a Ds19, (or ID19) On the right. Partially obscured white car may be some sort of Simca (or Ford) Vedette/Arianne. Then Renault 4cv/750,2cv,Fiat 600 Simca Aronde, the little car may be a Vespa 200, another 2cv, then a don't know ( one of those little Simca 8's ?), Peugeot 403, VW2. in the distance, can't see much, but the dark car nose first to the kerb just by the building is a Renault Dauphin, and of course there is another 2cv.
It is a Chrysler Newport - 1967. The big hint is the letter "N" on the license plate. (Newport). The printed advertisement for the Chrysler 300 for 1967 had the letters "TH" on the license plate. (Three Hundred).
Ford did the same thing with its printed advertisement for the 1962 Mercury Comet which had on the licence plate "MC". (Mercury Comet).
The first car on the right side of the street (left on screen) is captioned by IMCDB as a '56 Talbot, I'm not sure if that was the same as a Talbot-Lago.
I once read that French-made Talbots are pronounced Talbow while British made Talbots are pronounced Tall-butt, is that correct ?
Acually, I'm not sure when the -Lago bit ended with Talbot. Probably before that car, which is one of the last, so I would concur it is a Talbot. I think the pronunciation would be different too although I think that is more to do with the difference between English and French language than anything to do with the car makers themselves.
I've been thinking about that little car on the right-hand side. If it is a Vespa it would be a 400 ( despite my e-mail last night they never made a 200), but it doesn't look quite right somehow. It may be a Goggomobil, but there were also several other makes, in France, during the 'bubblecar' era, so it could be something else.
Blue and white car is a 1961 Chevrolet Impala, red convertible is a 1962 Dodge Polara, and the station wagon is a 1961 Chevrolet Nomad or Parkwood wagon. Can't tell the car way, way in back. It kind of looks like a 1958 Cadillac.
As for the actors, I believe Terry Thomas and Milton Berle are in the Chevy and Dick Shawn is driving the Dodge.
It should've been a Biscayne, but you can see the car in the picture is a hardtop and they didn't have a Biscayne hardtop. One could argue it's a Bel Air hardtop, but I happened to see the movie and noticed the car had three taillights per side when the car flipped over.
By the way, my Dad once owned a 1961 Chevrolet Biscayne two-door sedan. His car was unusual for a Biscayne as it had the full disc wheelcovers and whitewall tires. It was cream-colored with a gray cloth and vinyl interior, powered by the inline six-cylinder engine mated to a three-speed tranny shifted via the column.
I am sure they rented those too, but they rented Impalas back then as well (just as one can rent an Impala SS today, I guess)
Somewhere I have a pic of a rental lot in Anchorage after the 1964 earthquake, where a roof fell onto some cars in a parking area - there were 64 Impalas (2 door HTs even) among the mess.
Yet again I can't reply, bcause of this stupid margin, but the lotus Cortina is a Mark I, not a mark II. The first Cortinas - Ford or Lotus-Ford, were known as Ford Consul Cortinas, and they had a slightly different grille, with seperate sidelights. The facelift in I think 1964 made them Ford Cortinas, ( no Consul), and the grille changed to that on the posted car. The badge on the bonnet on this one says Cortina, whereas earlier cars would have said Consul. The Mk II was a completely different shape, introduced for 1967.
How do you tell the difference between a '62 Polara and a '62 Dart? We had a Dart growing up, looked like the movie car, as does the Polara. Our '64 Polara, OTOH, looked way different than a '64 Dart.
It's a 1964 Chevrolet, but I'll leave it to the GM experts to narrow down the trim level. Could be a Biscayne....could be a Bel Air....could be an Impala....I just don't know.
Good pic...that's the department store that collapsed, right?
When I was a kid I had a bit of a disaster obsession, I collected materials relating to such events. The pic I have is in a souvenir picture book printed probably shortly after the quake. I'll have to dig it out and scan it.
I also remember an image from that quake of a 58 Chevy wagon stuck on an uplifted street in a residential area. And of course all of the cars on the buckled streets in downtown.
I just did a quick search for other images...here's a good shot with some other oddball cars - I spot a 58 Ford and what looks like a Hillman Minx
This image is also in the book I have - I remember it. Flat Triumph
Right, that was a newly built JC Penny and it was razed and a bigger one built. They finally allowed rebuilding in that neighborhood with the Triumph back in the early 90's btw.
Cars in disasters - this could be a dicey thread....
That's the image I remember most, for the Volvo 544 nestled amongst those big Chevies. Seems a lot of oddball European cars made it to Alaska back then. I once saw in an old video of the disaster, in one of the flooded towns (Seward?) a lowline fintail driving through the rubble. There weren't many of those anywhere.
Cars in disasters...I could get going on this...
Here's the above shot from another angle:
And this tsunami damage shot is a winner. Looks like an Isetta 600 (!) on a 62 Ford. Crazy
Something interesting about those pics of the Alaskan earthquake--where are the trucks? A picture of the same street taken today would show very few cars, the streets would be lined with 4x4 pickups, SUVs and so forth.
Never mind Alaska, the only place I've ever seen Hummers on the road is London...
My journey to work takes me past a fairly posh school every morning and it would seem that to deliver a child to that establishment requires at least a Volvo XC90, or RangeRover Sport. ( And the catchment area for the school can't be more than about 4 miles - on tarmac)
In '64 trucks/4wd/etc were not common anywhere, Anchorage included. No SUVs period
I'm certainly aware of that but it's remarkable on a number of levels that they weren't common in a place like Alaska, they certainly were available. SUVs were available in the form of Willys station wagons, International Scouts and the like.

A first generation Lotus Cortina to be specific.
Nice, nice car.
We have that car to thank for many hotted-up small sedans since. BMW M3, for one.

They caption the Dodge as a '62 Dart, there's a bunch of 'em in IAMMMW, including the black cop car that Spencer Tracy drives.

Why are Florida freeways & malls (flat, ice-free, warm climate) crowded with burly H2's, ML350's, Navigators & Escalades??
Also, how on earth did the Swedes survive an entire century with no mainstream 4WD or AWD models??
I fully defend everyone's right to choose whatever they want, but some folk's car choices make me scratch my head. :confuse: :P
