Can't miss the yellow Beetle. No fair to ask me the year, they were still building those brand new in Brazil in 1986.

They were still building them in 2003 in Mexico.

I spent enough time staring at that little engine to be scarred for a very long time. . .

Still, mine would touch 7000 rpm--not bad for a pushrod unit!

They were still building them in 2003 in Mexico.

Apparently they started building them again in Brazil in 1993 and continued until 1996. I had a couple back in the day, but I could barely tell the years apart back then, much less now.

Imidazol - I have to hand it to you. You are correct - the '67 Pontiac Safari wagon had the two vertical lights on either side whereas the one in the pic definitely has only one. I hereby revise my statement and call it a 1966! Hats off to you guy :D
  • imidazol97imidazol97 Member Posts: 27,671
You got it! I didn't know what it was at the beginning. If couldn't find one in the pictures I usually use for reference; wagons are sometimes hard to find.

I liked the lineup of old wagons just because they're not seen very often even in the cruise in circuit.

Here's a picture of that Pontiac Safari when it was new. Same color (almost?)

I remember that, but didn't recall the years because I was no longer living in Brazil at the time.

I do recall demand was very high, and I think they had a sub-1000cc model, since engines that small were taxed at a lower rate, and of course fuel costs about double there compared to what we paid.

That Fiat is funny looking - short hood, long deck, opposite of most pony cars.

Yep, it's kinda hard to tell an XK150 from a 140 from that angle.

OK, I'll bite...Looks like a '67 Dodge Polara to me. But there are a few things wrong - there's too many letters to spell 'Dodge' on the trunk, there's a weird side ,marker light on the side... maybe it's some kind of Canadian Dodge Polara or Monaco???????
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,669

You're on the right track, it's a South African market 1967 Dodge Monaco,
which accounts for the extra letters on the trunk (M-o-n-a-c-o) and the odd marker light which was required in any countries before we got 'em in 1968.

If that's South African, why is the steering wheel on the left side?
  • lostwrench1lostwrench1 Member Posts: 1,165
Only a few countries ban steering wheels from being on the "wrong" side.
In the USA one can order a Jeep with the steering wheel on the "wrong" side.

I was going to suggest a 39'-'41 Ford as well, those chromed wires don't look like OEM.

Looks nice though. I think D3 should look back at some of its great styling and designs to enhance its competitive stature. Asia has some great products, but few real lookers out there.

Right you are Wgrafer, it's an Allard P1 Sport (1948-52). Unlike the Allard sports cars we know best, these were 5 passenger vehicles>

Looks like a Fiat 126, but the grille is different and it's RHD, so my guess is ...

    .. I have no idea.
  • stephen987stephen987 Member Posts: 1,994
Also, the engine's not in back like a 126.

Ah, the German Chevelle, a 1964-68 Opel Diplomat A. Some used a version of the same 327..er... 4.6L V8 used in the Malibu SS. If you look carefully you can see the "O-P-E-L" to the left on the grille. :P

  • stephen987stephen987 Member Posts: 1,994
Yeah--except the Diplomat coupe cost more than a Mercedes SL new. (And the 4.6 was the 283--the 327 went into the Diplomat 5.4).

Hmm, leave it to GM to take what's essentially a truncated Chevy Chevelle and try to put it up against a Mercedes flagship. What's next, a Nova? And God help 'em if they ever try that with a Cavalier! :P

    The BMW 3.2 l V8 in a 507?
  • stephen987stephen987 Member Posts: 1,994
Actually the Diplomat was pretty highly regarded by the European motor press when it debuted, even though the 4.6 (283) V8 tended to overheat at sustained autobahn speeds. Beyond the engine and transmission, how much of it really was shared with the US cars? I always had the impression they shared styling and powertrain but not much else--am I wrong?

I dunno how much it actually shares with the US cars, but something about the styling, especially around the windshield/A-pillar area, makes me think of a '64-67 Chevelle.

What transmission would it have used, I wonder? In the US, those 283's and even the 327's only used 2-speed Powerglides. The 3-speed THM350 wasn't out until 1969, and I think that's the year the 350 engine replaced the 327. I don't think GM ever put the big THM400 up to a smallblock, but I could be wrong.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,669
According to Wikipedia the '64-'68 Diplomats used the good ole Powerglide two-speed.

I don't know how much sheet metal they shared w Chevelles but given the resemblance I wouldn't be surprised if they shared roofs, trunks, hoods etc.
