Will check my logbook for the avg speed/hours of operation. I remember that I have a range of 2,900 to 3,600 miles between oil light changes, and undoubtedly have the hours recorded.
The oil change algorithm used monitors temperature, hours, and RPMs. Supposedly they have years of testing data compiled into this algorithm, and it calculates the oil break down point due to the way you drive. If you always do town driving, you will have high temps, low average mph, lots of rpms per mile.
So basically, if you drive the same way month to month, you SHOULD get close to the same hours out of an oil change.
The exact same algorithm could be very very different for someone else.
Apparently, GM says the way you drive keeps oil good for 134 hours!
I understand what the oil life monitor does - just as you explained - but wondered what kind of numbers other Silverado owners are getting.
I know the engine hour meter is kind of a corny feature - can't imagine anyone buying or not buying a truck because of it, but it is nice that the truck keeps track of the hours for you. My wife thinks I am nuts for even keeping track of the engine hours between fill ups & oil changes.
every tank of gas...every mile...etc...I look at the hour meter every once in a great moon..and check MPG maybe every 20 tanks or more?....I waste too much time here...not gonna do it off the puter as well..
well, one thing's fer sure. your wife and mine would have plenty to talk about (read: [non-permissible content removed] about) if they ever met! LOL!!!
Hey whats up with the Rams cup holders??? I was driving today and noticed this guys cupholders. It was located where the cd player is located in the silverado right in the middle at the top of the dash. He had the pull out kind it looked like. He had a bottle of water. It stuck up real high pretty close to the rear view mirror. I thought damn that sucks that is the worst place for a cup holder. How can you fit a big gulp in there? I lovemy cup holders its right in the middle console in between both front seats. I can fit a 44OZ easily.
That Dodge Ram was a pre-98 model. For 98 the cup holders are at the bottom of the dash. They are some of the biggest and best designed cup holders out their. Go look at a new Ram so you can see how well their new cup holders work.
I was just wondering about them. It was a regular cab 99 i am assuming had the sport logo on the hood like the 99 and 00 models.
I doubt they are the best designed. My opinion the silverado w/center console are the best designed. Easy to grab and store no bouncing or spilling. And i know your come back well youve only seen them on a silverado well i have seen the cupholders on all 4 full size trucks and i can make the comparison.
Just wanted to know why they put it in such a bad spot thats all i didnt want to start WW3.
The cupholders in the '98 and newer rams are excellent and can handle just about anything short of a thermos. Products evolve the bad cupholders go away and are replaced with these.
Sorry to start a controversy. Damn i didnt mean to do that. I just thought it was really odd where these were located. Very high up i could see clearly that he had bottled water.
I was given a 1500 Ram 5.9 ext cab with 700 miles on it. The cupholders are still a joke...yes it is lower but its got this stupid clicking adjuster for your cups...made of plastic so who knows when those teeth are going to give out. The truck pulls pretty good on the low end but it has those small 245/75R16's on it, but runs out of breath waaaay too soon. Eats gas as if it was free too. I noticed excessive bed movement going over bumps ang the truck sagged when hauling 700#'s of load. Freeway ride over expansion joints when loaded and unloaded was enough to cause seasickness. Not to mention the too soft suspension which made freeway driving a totally new horror experience...like not knowing when you are going to lose control of the damn thing. When driving over bumps at low speed...going over a sidewalk, there was excessive side to side movement which I couldn't understand. Don't know if this truck was lemon, but if all Dodge trucks are like this one, I would do the same and turn it back in the next day as I did with this rental. Hey dodgeram7, any comments....BTW, I gotta go with a Tundra before a Dodge....ROFLMAO!
Finally!! Someone at lear should be given a medal for their work! That is a well-thought out truck. Maybe they will realize that we carry more than tools?>? BTW: I don't need to be converted--I own GM products along with my steed of Fords....
makes you kind of wonder what direction GMC is going with their trucks...one minute a professional model...the next a C series. I guess they are trying to bolster their sales cause from what I seen the Chevy blows them away in sales numbers. Must have something to do with that apple pie.
Everyone knows they are (were anyway) the exact same truck. One main reason Chevy sells more is they have more dealers. GM is trying to go upscale with the GMC brand, more HP etc than Chevy - it may work out and improve sales - but they are almost as ugly as a Ford - so I don't think they will pass up Chevy anytime soon.
If GMC could manage to build something "almost as ugly as a Ford" that might hurt their sales almost as bad as it has hurt Ford's. Let's see, since the redesign of the F-150, they have slumped from far-and-away number one seller to.... Oops, I forgot. The F-150 is now the even further and farther away number one selling truck in America, going on -- let me see -- 23 years in row! Yep, GMC better not try copying anything from the most successful truck model line in history. That would sure be a mistake, huh?!? ;-)
Good point - hard to argue will sales success. It would also start a new controversy - Did GMC copy the look of the Tundra - that copied the look of the Ford - that copied the look of the Tacoma or did they just come up with the butt ugly look on their own. Not all Fords are ugly - the super duty has a nice look - Looks are so subjective - But IMO the Silverado is the best looking 1/2 ton truck - Isn't the F-150 due for a re-design soon anyway?
You are right, looks are totally subjective. The first thing that attracted me to the F-150 was the looks. Of course, I'm one of those who wasn't really looking for a truck per se. As well as what I think are slick looks, I wanted a big vehicle with enough space inside for my family and in the back under the Eurolid cover for the stuff we might occasionally shuffle around -- not even hauling really, just the odd plant, bags of fertilizer and maybe once in the pickup's entire life (which I hope to be many years) some patio paving stones. Of course, being lazy, I will actually probably have the stones delivered (but still will need to buy a wheel barrow, won't I?). Yes, I suppose I am a yuppie (or whatever the current term is for middle-class, white collar suburbanite) sort of pickup owner.
Maybe you find a more "trucky" look attractive and undoubtedly your needs and desires are different than mine. It's good to have the variety and makes the highways considerably more interesting too. Even having bought what is undoubtedly the most numerous pickup model on the roads, I still gain a little joy from the fact that mine is at least a fairly unusual paint job and configuration. Sort of like that have-it-both-ways appeal of the Dr. Pepper ads of old, "Be original! Join the crowd!" ;-)
Enjoy your truck. It's a good thing that you drive what you like and the same for me....
Disappointment only to those wanting a truck that looks like Dodge or Ford.
Truck outperforms both. has more features than both. And sales have increase over last year, same as Ford.
I don't think GM is disappointed. find any disappointed GM owners? Just something Ford fans say about a truck that does some/certain things a lot better...;)
Sales advantage is like 5%. Now Ford and Gm are up about 30% on Dodge, and 90% on Toyota. those are advantages
Ford isn't running away. With the sales lead being about 5000 per month, I would say Ford is doing that with the Superduty's. If Ford is selling 30,000 of those per month, I really doubt Gm is selling anywhere close to 10,000 C/Ks per month right now.
we'll never know, but i'd say that 1/2 ton vs 1/2 ton, the Sierra and Silverado combined are outselling the F150. If my numbers above are anywhere close.
here's the thing...5.3 will run with the 5.4 in any test. and it gets better mileage. I think the 5.4 will pull a long hill longer before downshifting...but thats about it as far as performance advantages. everything esle they are equal.
Ford has nothing to answer the 6.0. What are Ford folks gonna say when the 8.1 is out next month? are they still going to compare the 6.0 to the v10? GM offers more. The GM HD line will have a MUCH more powerful base v8 than Ford.
Ford's 4.6 is pretty weak compared to GM's 4.8.
I just think you let your preference for Ford have too much weight for your post to be taken seriously.
Why is it that every time you open your mouth it spews out stupidity. You say "The 6.0 is far and above the V10". Stick with your nerf bar knowledge and leave the heavy hauling to the rest. Swift...
The Ford V-10 must not be a very good engine,it definetely lacks in power, thats why if you go and look on the side of just about any gas powered motor homes made in the last 4 or 5 years it says TRITON V-10 in big bold print. How many GM 6.0l engines are there in heavy duty applications?
Whooa, go back and read, folks. don't put words in my mouth.
I said Ford folks always compare v10 superiority to the 6.0. becuz the 5.4 doesn't match up with it all. I never compared it.
5.3 vs 5.4 in the half tons
454 or 8.1 vs V10
and what compares with the 6.0? 6.0 is the small block option--that compares it to 5.4. Gm offers more.
don't worry about the 8.1. its already going into marine apps, the most stressful engine environment there is.
In all tests i've seen, 5.3 slightly outpulled or equally pulled loaded test with the Ford. Never seen one 'peter' out. I just don't buy the ONE dyno test, that everyone (read: Ford touters) quotes as bible, that the GM engines are over-rated. Especially since the EXACT SAME MAGAZINE did a pulling test, and the GM truck outpulled everything.
So do you tell yourself you have the better engine when you get passed by a another truck uphill, and that if you just had the right gears it wouldn't have happened? If Ford doesn't offer it, who's prob is that?
My point--Ford and Dodge have no answer for the 6.0 in the mid v8 range. It is a step above the 5.4, and gets even more power next year.
One of the things I wish Ford would do is put the Lincoln Navigator version of the 5.4l engine in the F-series.That engine has 305hp then it would be comparible to the 6.0l.
hell just got easier i guess?...seeing my 2500..with a 6.0 is rated at 11K for towing...
I've heard testing stories first hand for the last 4 years about the 6.0 and what in stands up to....it's not a V-10...but Ford fans just [non-permissible content removed] and cry cuz they have nothing between the 5.4 and V-10...whahhh
and of course the V-10 may be in more apps than the 6.0....duhh.....it's been out in production 1.5 years now...
that's a toughie to figure out
I have always given credit to ford where it is due....but I see none to give here this time..
Consider MPG, power and such for it only being a V-8. I dont know the exact numbers and im not gonna look. Just wait and see what the 8.1 V-8 will do to that V10. People think V10 ooooo more power but thats not always true.
..The V-10 would be better...due to it's nature of torque and 2 extra cyl......but I never said it was better..did I?....I said it's very close....something Ford fans just can't seem to swallow in a small block..
The only reason it gets compared to the V-10..is cuz Ford has nothing to compare it to...
Toss in teh New Towing King 0 Duramax and the 8.1....Ford has some catching up to do..
Good luck on this one now!
- Tim
BTW..where are all the Tundra fans when it comes to heavy towing talk?...after all..it's the king of trucks...right?
jcmdie didn't say anything about the Navigator version of the engine. That was lariat1. From your posts I think you equate the 150 series to the 5.4 liter and the 250 seies with the v10 and powerstroke. The 5.4 is the largest available in the 150 and is the standard of the 250. There are not that many v10 fords out there. The 5.4 and diesel are the most popular in the 250largely due to fuel economy.
The Navigator 5.4 engine doesn't get put in trucks becuz it gets about 11 mpg. Great horsepower, but might as well have a 4BBl on it.
The 6.0 is getting 15-16 in 2 wheel drive, and about 14 in 4x4s.
The 6.0 doesn't get put in half tons becuz, they already offer 2 v8s that can pull max half ton capaacity. And mileage--the 6.0 would average 13- 15, while the 5.3 is averaging 15-18.
looks like the lineup has changed for 2001, as apparently GM has is not offering the 2500 LD, instead, a 'heavy half', or 1500HD.

Just cause its a higher number dont mean crap
I noticed at the gas pump that diesel isn't as cheaper as I thought they were.
Been thinking about fuel lately, prices went up.

according to the tests that are quoted around here, the GM with the 3.73 outperformed the Ford with the 3.55.
no published data or tests about the GM with the 4.10.
Are you still comparing the 6.0 to the v10?
Comment on 6.0 vs 5.4. thats what i've been trying to talk about, can't speak for everyone. The 6.0 tromps it. Give credit where credit is due.
then i guess i can't argue with that. The know all has spoken.
