Porsche 914. They're popular for electric car conversions for some reason I don't understand. I think of it as just another nasty '70s car with the typical overcomplicated and expensive German engineering.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,675
It's a '71 914/6, the one that came with the 911 flat 6. I suspect that it's popular for electric car conversions because there's plenty of room for batteries in the two trunks.

I think your assesment of it is rather harsh. The 914 was one of the best handling sports cars of it's generation and had an unusual amount of space for a two-seater. The biggest knock on them were that they were slow (the 6 cylinder was plenty fast) and expensive (the price caused me to buy a Fiat instead at about 2/3 the cost of the 914/1.7).

IT wasn't terribly over complicated either in fact simplicity was a hallmark of those cars.

without a hood. I'm not qualified to figure out what series, but it looks like a V-12? maybe it's just the 6, but it seems to have too much crap in the engine compartment. In any case, looks like a later (early 70's) version.

Make it a real late (74) model. I just noticed the hood inthe background with the rubber bumper zits.

I believe. Chrysler 2.2l turbo engine, very high strung but light enough that it performed.

Hard to believe this was the for-runner to the Mosler MT900. Well, actually the Raptor was the for-runner to the MT900, and Consulier was the for-runner to the Raptor.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,675
Yup it's a '74 V12. It's funny that the ad didn't specify which motor but I recognized the V12 which was infernally complex and a lot less pretty to look at than the DOHC 6.

Something that ugly could only be the Mosler GT sports car from the 90s. I used to race against them (virtually) in EA's Sports Car GT vid game.

Cool game, ugly car, tho it did do well in actual competition.

If you look carefully on the left front fender you'll see the word Commuter. So it's a '59 Mercury Commuter. Honestly I'm not sure what the differences were between the two Merc SW lines but I'm guessing the CP was the more upscale since all the images of them I've found have "woody" siding and only a few of the Commuters do.

It's curious that all of the '59 Merc wagons lacked a B pillar. I'll bet those hardtop wagons rattled like hell.

    I'm not sure how much help this is but in 'Standard Catalog of American Cars 1946-1975' by John Gunnell, it says about the 59 wagons;
" Commuter wagons shared trim styling with Montereys, Voyager and Colony Park trim was like used on Montclairs, except the Colony Park had simulated wood panels."
There was a 2 door and a 4 door Commuter wagon (1051 and 15122 manufactured respectively) the Colony Park was only a 4door, (5959 made) but the Voyager (2496 made) may have also been made 'in limited numbers' as a 2door.

VW Golf Plus, with raised headroom - launched here last autumn, but they haven't exactly been commonplace.

    VW Golf Plus

I assume that's how it's known in the UK. In Italy they call it the Golf Multispazio.
Elsewhere it's called the Golf MPV. :confuse:

    I'll guess a '68. Was this a type 2 model?

I don't know if I ever saw one in person, but I do remember a few people had fastback models when I was a kid.

The VW Type 2 was the Transporter/Microbus, the sedan/Fastback/Squareback (S/W) was the Type 3.
The car illustrated was a '65 sedan version of the car known in the USA as the Squareback or Fastback but elsewhere in the world as the Volkswagen 1300/Type 3.

A few trunk-back sedans were imported to via
    grey market channels.

I'm guessing Bonneville because of the rocker panel's being chromed.
