Comparing the Sierra brochure with the trailering brochure of the Silverado it appears that the GCWR for the 3.73 and 4.10 being rated at 17,000 and 19,000 must be for the Surburban. A note at the bottom of the Silverado brochure says that the 20,000 and 22,000 ratings are for the 2500HD and the 3500 only. There is no mention of this in the Sierra brochure, so I think it was a misprint since the Sierra brochure is for pickups only. Also, both brochures list a 3.73 ratio available with the 8.1/Allison combination, so I don't understand why Tramper's dealer said it couldn't be ordered that way. It is not available with the manual transmission and that may have been what the dealer was looking at. Anyway, good luck with your trucks guys, the more I read about these trucks the more I'm ready to spend the bucks on the duramax. Just wish I could see one and drive it first.
Dooh, bad math. forgot to add half a wheel diameter to my numbers and correct for aspect ratio.
Let's see, 16" wheels, 1/2 of that is 8 inches 8 inches = 203.2mm radius of a wheel. Add 198.7 mm for a 265 section width times 75 aspect ratio = 402 mm radius on the bigger tire.
Add 183.7 mm to the wheel radius and you get 387 mm radius on the smaller tire.
402/387 = 3.9%
Yup pretty much agree with you Hunter (except on load range).
So driving 60 indicated will give you actual 62.3 mph.
When I push down on the accelerator on my 4.8, I get pushed off the front of the seat.
Or was that the brake.....
PS Ryan, -6F at my house Monday morning here in sunny AZ. Truck takes about an extra 1/2 second of cranking to start with 5W-30 walmart oil when parked outside in that temp.... much better than my old ford diesel.
Mark my truck starts perfect. I think the day it struggled to start was due to the dampness in the air. Its fine now. 5W-30 mobil oil here about 800 mls then i switch to mobil 1.
Thanks (t37l1011) for clearing the ratio question up for me. My 2000, Sierra, 5.3L 1500 SB, ExC has been losing transmission fluid the first time was after a long trip towing my 5th wheel in Canada. I had to put in almost a qt. to get the level up to the minimum mark. I took it in to the dealer and told him I was losing fluid and he said it was normal to do that if it got too hot. Is he giving me a line or is it supposed to release fluid when it gets too hot. I checked the fluid level a few weeks later and it was down again but not as much as the first time. I hadn't been doing any towing since the Canada trip but was doing some solo driving in the High Sierras here in California.
This is for Tramper. The 4.10 was initially the only option for the 2500HD, 8.1 with the Allison. Then later GM decided to add the 3.73 to the list. I ordered a 2500HD LT with the 8.1, Allison, with a 3.73 rearend. cowboyjohn.1
I forgot to mention that I shopped for my pickup from Omaha to Northern Idaho to Southern CA. The fellow from Southern CA was adamant about getting a 4.10 and NOT getting a 3.73. He said he drove a 3.73 Suburban with the 8.1 and it was a dog compared to one with the 4.10. So I almost ordered a 4.10, but then got to thinking about it. His driving is from stoplight to stoplight, so acceleration probably means more to him than me. I do negotiate a few stoplights, but mostly my driving is in terms of miles, not blocks. To give you an idea once I hit the edge of my town going west the next light is 75 miles, south 35 miles, east 45 miles, northeast 150 miles, and north west 200+ miles, so I chose the 3.73 for the little better mileage. Hope this helps. I sure enjoy reading the comments posted. cowboyjohn1
i picked up my 2500cc sb 4x4 8.1 3.73 allison tuesday and i'am very pleased. also put mich 265's on yesterday with no loss in power, heck there is enough torque there to pull a redwood stump out of the ground. my dealer also was adamant about the 4.10 as i found out later was on constraint at the time, must have been looking to put me into an incoming unit for a quicker commission?, anyway i tow to the colorado river 240miles, glamis sand dunes 150miles and vegas 180 miles with very little stoplight to stoplight, so the 3.73 is ideal. bought my truck for $500.00 over invoice plus adv, best deal i could find.
Thanks for the compliments...It looks much better now that I have the wheels and tires and a ranchhand rear bumper...I also just got some nerf bars put on( Thanks Richard!) that look great...
When did you order your 2500hd w/8.1 and 3.73? I checked with 2 GMC and 1 other Chev. dealer before I ordered mine 2 weeks ago. All said 3.73 only avail. with duromax. I also check Kelly Blue Book [www.kbb.com]and they show same info. This must be a recent change, maybe the word has'nt got to them yet.Since I do a lot of towing in the Sierra's and Canada and Alaska maybe the 4.10s will be ok after all. Most of my non towing driving is mostly short trips to my fishing holes 50-60 mi. Just hope it's here by early spring, got to make that spring salmon run in Alaska. Have you got a tpd yet? Thanks guys for the info. keep the news coming and happy motoring. Tramper
Your dealers must be smoking some serious stuff because i have seen already about 4 3.73 8.1L....that means they were on order for atleast a month probably 2..
I'm still awaiting word on my 6.0 crew ordered in early August and my dealer warns that it may be spring before I can get one delivered to Montana. I have a chance to buy 6.0 crew with 500 miles that was originally a Canadian truck with a converted speedo. The build sheet suggests it has cast heads and only 300 hp. Anyone know if there are any concerns or cautions when buying a Canadian vehicle?
The question may be "why is the trans. getting hot?". Check the trans. cooling lines for any possible plugging or smashed lines. If it's runing to hot and the vent is plugged it will blow out around the seals. If you are towing within the weight specs.this fluid loss is not normal.keep bugging the dealer or request a factory rep.to check it out. Lots of luck. Tramper
Following prices from SAM's--carry-out per tire-- (A Wallmart pay membership outlet) Have to add Tax, Mounting/Ballance (M/B $15.00per here).

Roger350 - How's the Firestone deal working out - Please keep blow by blow posted??
AT or All Terrain is a more aggressive tread pattern than the M/S or Mud/Snow and with it a little more road noise and harsher ride. I had installed 275/70R16 on both my '00 rado and '00 Denali as one had the Generals (ugh) and the other Firestone Firehawks (double ugh!). I also had a '01 Dakota quad cab rental that had the LTX M/S on them. Not sure on the size though.
Am replacing my 1973 GMC 1-ton single axle with 350, 4-speed manual, and 4.11 rear end with a Sierra Heavy Duty 2500 Series to have the Allison trany, tow package (even though I rarely tow anything), seats with the lumbar support (for my bad back), extended cab, 4-wheel drive, and long box (to hold a cabover camper).
My question is this: Since I would never consider another 4.11 (4.10) rear end is my only other choice the 3.73 rear end? and which engine should I select? The 5.3 although more powerful than my present equivalent (the 350) may not be powerful enough; the 8.1 may be too much engine for my needs (and suck up too much gas); is the 6.0 the happy medium? I figure that the 4-wheel drive with the low range will pull me out of jams and start up any heavy load that the 4.10 rear end would normally handle with ease. I'm not into diesels.
Any help would be appreciated as my last new vehicle was purchased in 1970 and I am out of touch with offerings and repercussions from bad choices.
Yeah, I paid 139.00 for the 265 LTX AT's at Sams. I saw Sams listed on Michelin's web site as an official retailer, so that squashed any concerns of these being seconds or blems or something. My Sams only charged 8 per tire for M/B. I was worried about them doing it, but I stood out there and watched and talked with the guys. They used a torque wrench to tighten the lugs, and seemed to do everything the proper way.
They do make 245 AT's in the E range, and by all means get them if you are going to be doing a lot of heavy work with the truck up near max GVWR.
I'll keep you posted on the Firestone debacle, but I will be busy with the holidays and trying to sell the old truck and clean out the garage for the new truck, so it might be a couple of weeks. Have a great holiday everyone.
The 6.0 available only with 4.1 and GM transmission.
The 8.1 has 3.73 option with Allison (Don't let dealer tell you different)
While the 6.0 may be enough engine the Allison makes the difference. Also yet to be proven the 8.1/allison/3.73 may get as good milage as the 6.0/4.1/GM.
If the milage is within a couple mpg at 10 or 12 there are times when you can't have tooooo much power. My .02
Roger-Thanks - Didn't know SAM's did the M/B - Have good holidays.
Yeah, I agree that he-she was looking for a quicker commission. The way I look at it is when I pay that much money, I want what I want and am willing to wait for it. Based on the mileages you gave, you must live in the "Valley." I ordered the 2500HD/8.1/Allison with the 3.73 on Oct. 10th according to the old checkbook - $500 down. They haven't cashed the check yet, and I think they are going to hold till we do the final settlement. No TPD yet. I am told around mid-December. That trip to Alaska will be GREAT!
Sorry to have to bring you down to earth, but the first year depreciation is huge on any vehicle, Silverado's included (Tim, maybe not your 2500 though, haha).
You might want to run thru the Edmunds online program which will calc your trucks current worth based on its options in both Trade-in and Market value.
You are not going to be anywhere near $28k, unfortunately.
My loaded 99 LT with low miles is already down to $21k (from $32.5 msrp).

Did drive 4x4 LS ExCab LB at local dealer and it was a 4.10 -- Maybe the LB is not availabe with 3.73 but that would be strange!!!!
I think the 3.73 will have better gas milage than 4.10

a 2500HD LT with an 8.1 and allison for 33K im trading my truck in today and paying what 1K difference?
I wasnt being a smart@$$ what if someone jumped on that and called the place. Then they get pissed cause they heard it was 33K.
I was just correcting
Ryan
Dean you could look the truck up and down and couldnt find where it was scratched and the dent was.
I figure i could get 28K for my truck. Then i could use my dads suplier deal again and the 2500HD would only be 29-30K tops
Ryan
So 33K for a 2500HD LT with an 8.1/allison is a pretty good price?
And can you get a 3.73 with positive traction?
