Hard to say, as we don't know what taxes and license fees are in CA.
But- I've been watching and getting some Tribeca prices. If you can get an 07 for within about $500 of "Invoice-$1250' you're doing pretty well on an '07. The Invoice price would include the invoice price of the options as well, not the retail price. Seems like you're about there.
I just picked up my 2007 5 pass Limited with Puddle lights, wheel locks, all weather mats, retractable rear cover, rear bumper cover and day/night rear mirror for $30807 including delivery and their rip-off doc fee. Just tax and title added for a grand total of $32700. I did the entire deal over the net and the phone. Picked up the car with no hassles or added pressure. And so far after about 650 miles, I am enjoying a great car
Looking at a 2007 7 pass SE LTD with NAV and DVD. Received a quote of $36,500. The adds total about $2,200 (invoice not MSRP). If the invoice on the 7 pas LTD is $35,492 looks like with the adds the total invoice would be $37,700. I thought it looked like a good price and other dealers wouldn't match. But, I had heard that the invoice might have been reduced b/c of gas prices or something silly like that.
I think you might be able to find better invoice. I think $33,500-$34,100 is a good invoice for a 2007 LTD 7 Seater with DVD & Nav. Plus i think there is some cash back about $1250. You should be able to get out the door Tax & Lic for $37,700 fully loaded with all the add on goodies.
Your invoice price of $35,492 looks right to me based on the pricing on cars101.com. The SE package adds another $1100 invoice to put you around $36.6k.
Their offer of $1200 under invoice seems good to me... probably offering you nearly all of the factory-to-dealer incentive, leaving them with essentially just the holdback as profit.
I haven't heard of any change to the invoice price... if anything, Subaru would offer an additional incentive to the dealer rather than change the actual invoice price, I would think. Also, no rebates offered on '07 Tribecas yet, at least in my region.
Thanks for the sanity check. I just picked it up and got them to split the cost of a roof carrier ~$400. I'm happy with the deal and no one else the area would match it.
Drove the car for a few hours. Great on the curves. Love the Diamond Gray color and the toys. Only knock is second gear seems a little weak if not using the sport shift.
They pretty much all do it. Just go to the edmunds pricing page on the 'beca, and that's one way. There are quite a number of web sites that will send out a pricing request to all the dealers in the vicinity of your zip code, and they'll respond with their pricing on your selection of color and options.
The other way to do it is to go through www.carsdirect.com, which works in a different way. As best I can understand it, CarsDirect makes pre-arranged pricing deals with dealers, and then takes a percentage on top of that. So- my plan (a month from now when I buy my 'beca) is to essentially threaten (in a nice way) my local dealer that I'll go through CarsDirect- or let them give me the CarsDirect price directly- and then they won't need to pay the commission to CarsDirect. We'll see how this works in a month or so.
Thanks. I to may be a month (or a bit more) away from purchasing. My wife also wants us to consider the Outback but when I've driven them in the past I've felt a bit confined. Keep me posted on your process.
You can get invoice pricing on accessories, but you'll have to pay labor in addition to the part cost if it's something that needs to be installed, so keep that in mind when you're calculating cost. For example, you can add a cargo tray for invoice pricing, but you'll have to pay parts plus labor to add a tow hitch or roof rack, unless you want to install them yourself.
And it's not too hard to install most of them (I've done a hitch, air filtration, 6CD changer, skid plate, etc.) but be aware that the instructions are worse than Ikea's.
I'm now ready to buy a 7-pass ltd/Nav. My local dealer (Emich) found me a 'beca at another dealer 100mi away that has nearly met my requirements- except it's the harvest gold- a color that I haven't seen. I was hoping for Seacrest or White.
I let him know that forums like this exist, and i was looking for very agressive pricing . Before I could even finish he politely cut me off, immediately agreed that this was the new 'way of the world' in the industry, told me the MSRP, Invoice price, and then took off the $1250 in dealer incentive from the invoice. Then he added $400 markup for his dealership profit. So, his price was = Invoice - $1250 + $400. Frankly, that seems reasonable to me. I could dicker for a portion of his $400, but for me, it just doesn't seem right. So- we're there on price, now all we need to do is find (or wait for) the car of my choice.
(or is there a sizable dealer holdback that I don't know about?)
There should be a profit holdback from Subaru for the dealership of several hundred bucks, so they'll make more than the $400 on it, but that's a very good price they've offered. As you know, there aren't rebates on '07s yet, but there are special finance rates. http://www.cars101.com/subaru/rebates.html If you finance through Subaru, make sure the dealer gives you the rate you qualify for - some dealerships make extra profit doing otherwise.
Ultimately- my local dealer couldn't get me the vehicle that I wanted, or even my second choice. So, I ended up going out of state and am getting a vehicle from South Coast Subaru in Costa Mesa, CA.
Exactly at "Invoice minus $1250"- plus a $45 doc fee, $8 for tire disposal and $350 to ship it to me. Final price is $33,483. I never paid attention to what the MSRP was- as we only dealt from the Invoice price. No hassle, no haggle. They knew the rock bottom going rate for the vehicle. I asked for this price, and they didn't hesitate to say 'OK'. Granted, you can do a couple hundred better from Fitzmall, but I'm nowhere near the right coast, and I'm not one to quibble on the last $100 after I feel like I'm getting a solid deal.
Tire disposal fees are usually charged on any tire purchase.... whether they are on a car, or not..
It helps the states pay to clean up all of those tire dumps.... You know, where the farmer hoarded them for twenty years because he was going to make a mint selling them to be turned into petroleum products?
Instead... he dies, or goes bankrupt, and leaves a rodent and mosquito infestation mess that costs hundreds of thousands to clean up..
Thanks for asking. I could't find a seacrest green. And after a taking a look at the beautiful pearl white color- I decided it was too beautiful, and made the car look a little too feminine. Perhaps guess I doubt my masculinity??
In any case- I fell in love with the Titanium Silver- which is the color I really wanted in the first place, but was worried about the darker leather interior and the mediocre air conditioner wouldn't be able to keep up against the Tucson summer sun.
Then I realized that I'm seldom even around Tucson in the summer (I travel for work), so it shouldn't be too much of an issue. If it is, I'll post next summer and whine to ya'll. Especially to Karen in Phoenix who posted a long time ago that the AC was fine.
Between the paperwork, money transfer and shipping, it will be another week or so before I get to take delivery. Can't wait!
Short of buying a house, buying a new car is a pretty exciting purchase. One that I don't do too often.
I'm also just amazed at how there was no need to negotiate the price. And by buying from a distance- no need to run the gauntlet at the dealership on extended warranties and overpriced paint protection. There is some FedEx'ing required tho'.
I just placed an order today for the B9 7 passenger Ltd loaded w/Nav/Dvd and anything else I could add on. It's going to be black with tan interior. My delivery will be in December.
The dealer is going to add Bluetooth for me as well. Am very excited and this will be perfect timing for when we start driving up those icy mountains in NC!!!!
Ah, thanks for the info. About 20 years ago we had an infamous tire fire here that burned millions of tires, lasted three months, temporarily closed I-5, caused evacuations due to toxic smoke, and had contaminated runoff from firefighting attempts foul the river and Puget Sound. With all the black smoke billowing skyward, I thought Mt. Rainier was erupting like St. Helens did.
Prob'ly worth $8 bucks on any tire purchase to avoid this.
I am close to purchasing a 5 passenger Limited B9. The dealer has one in stock with a couple of things on it I don't want/need (trailer hitch, back up sensor) and is missing things I want...all of which he says he can add at the dealership. My question for now is...has anyone purchased through the COSTCO program? If so...how was the experience/process?
Good luck with your new Tribeca - you will enjoy it! I have not bought through the Costco program but I do purchase through a VIP program.
If your dealer is honest with a good reputation your deal will go smoothly.
You should be able to get a vehicle the way you want it - insist on it and be patient. When purchasing through programs the dealer is given a fixed profit - so it is in his best interest to sell from his inventory and do as little work as possible. They will also try to add to their profit by padding lease and loan payments, dealer installed options and add ons, and bogus fees. Costco has no control over this!
You will have to negotiate your lease and loan payments.
Question what you don't understand and if you feel pressured walk out.
Try to have the car come from Subaru with all the factory options you want.
I'm sure you already know most if not all of what I stated and I apologize for making this process sound awful but many people I know have been cheated (including me when I bought my first car).
Thanks..that's helpful. What is the VIP program? Is that different than the Costco program? I have been able to find the MSRP and the invoice of the various options so I think I will have a handle on the cost of those. They are saying thta they can offer me the Subaru financing (interst rate) even after it ends on Oct. 31.
How much over invoice did you pay using the Costco program?
Subaru offers VIP programs for their employees, vendors, marketing partners and sponsored associations. I am a member of IMBA - International Mountain Bicycling Association. Costco's program should be similar to mine.
I paid invoice , however there are 3 distributors for Subaru in mainland USA.
SNE- Subaru of New England covering I believe Connecticut north to Maine SDC - Subaru Distributors Corp. covering NY, NJ, & PA SOA - Subaru of America covering the rest of the mainland.
The first two buy from SOA so their Invoice prices are higher. Also regional advertizing fees vary and these are part of the Invoice cost.
Depending where you are you may actually pay less than me!
Have you been quoted a price?? Where are you located??
when you are ready use Edmunds invoice as a guideline - remember the advertising fees - they vary all over the country.
One final thing - IMHO a reputable dealer and service dept. is worth more in the end than a few hundred dollars!! Just like any business, they take care of their customers - find one that appreciates you.
After visiting the Costco website it appears they take an interest in quality of customer service you receive. Ask Costco if and how they handle problems.
OK..I purchased my car...a 5 pass. Ltd...with towing package and shock sensor. I didn't want/need either of these but took them to get the car. I thought I got a good price...low $33K but not so sure now. I will add on the other accessories I want (e.g. puddle lights, rear bumper guard). The manager said he'd give me the price (assuming MSRP) minus 15%. Was a bit dismayed that I also had to pay for some theft protection (glass etching) and the paint and leather protection...already done. It was a 3 hour process...got good financing (4.9%) and the extended (6yr/100K) waranty. My wife did not want to go through the process so we did this deal. The quoted me that the car was $300 over invoice.
Bob You coulda' done better, much better. $300 over invoice sounds reasonable, but is about $1500 more than you could have paid, as there's a $1250 incentive that the dealer is getting- not including dealer holdback. In addition, buying extended warranties, paint and leather protection, glass etching are standard ways that dealers make extra money from you. They typically way overcharge for these needless items, and they'll stick to their guns about how it's already on the vehicle and they can't take it off. Don't ever pay for that crap again! You can buy an extended warranty any time- even years down the road if you decide then that you want it.
I had three different dealers who were jumping at the chance to sell me a tribeca for $1250 under invoice- with no add-ons. I just told them what I was willing to pay, and they all said "sure, we can do that". Hassle and haggle free. They FedEx'ed me the paperwork and I never set foot in the dealership or went through the gauntlet.
Sorry- I know that you just bought a new car and you want to feel good about the deal you got- but I'd say that the dealer won this round. Hopefully they'll treat you well in the future when you go in for service... that's worth something. Like- do you get a loaner car?
Even if you don't tow- the extra transmission cooler that comes with it is a good thing to have. Puddle lights are way cool, and the rear bumper guard is an easy self install. It just goes on with sticky back tape (be careful when you line it up to put it on straight).
Web sites like this (and Costco, and CarsDirect...) have changed the game for auto pricing. Walking into a dealership and haggling for the price of a car is becoming a thing of the past.
Now to something more positive: You're going to love the Tribeca! And the extra couple of grand will get lost in the noise 5 years down the road.
Bob, You did not mention how it drives so I assume you purchased on Saturday. When did you sign the papers???
If you haven't picked up the car yet you might be able to get out of the deal or improve it. Don't drive the car off the dealer lot until you know your consumer rights.
It is a state wide law in NJ that a consumer has - I believe 3 days - to cancel a contract, similar to real estate. A contract becomes binding after you "curb the vehicle" or a certain time period elapses.
Find out what your state laws are and what your rights are as a consumer!!
Don't back down - it's your money.
As Morey000 said the deal could have been better but if you are past the point of changing this rest assured that you have purchased a reliable vehicle and one you will enjoy. I know - I have one too and my second is ordered for delivery this month!
I bought it on Saturday..I couldn't drive it home as I had a car to bring home...they delivered it Sunday. I was told when I signed that Calif. does not have a buyers remorse clause.
OK..i could have done better. It's only a slight bruse to the ego. I am (thus far) very happy with the car. in the long term....a the money difference doesn't matter that much...of course it does at the time of the deal but with time the sting will disipate. I will try to work out as good of a deal as I can now on the add ons (e.g. puddle lights, rear bumper cover, etc.)
Wow FLGirlaol, That's one loaded 'beca. Sounds like you've got nearly every option imaginable on her. Or- you have the SE package (Nice!) I'm sure you'll enjoy the vehicle- it's sweet.
If you're looking for the best deal: 1. Be sure that those 'options' don't include inflated dealer items -like $700 paint protection and such. 2. Go into the transaction informed (which you already are). The dealer is currently getting $1250 back from Subaru, so your reasonable offer price should be "Invoice minus $1250." 3. You're on the right path. Even if you are leasing, before you negotiate monthly fee, negotiate the price of the car! The Tribeca gets high marks for retained value, so leasing should be excellent: https://www.alg.com/deprratings.aspx
4. Depending on the size of the dealer and how many cars they move, they still make money from additional dealer holdback fees (maybe another $1000 per vehicle- I don't really know) So, don't feel sorry for them. If they want a few hundred dollars more, than "Invoice minus $1250" and they're a good dealer and you feel will treat you well in the future, you're still getting a screaming deal on a great car. But- the negotiation starting point is (I'll say it again) Invoice minus $1250.
If this place sells only Subarus, realize that you are buying their top of the line product. The most expensive thing that they sell. They should treat you accordingly.
Another trick- don't step foot into the dealership until the price is agreed upon, (email is fine). Let them know that you are looking on line and are talking to three other dealerships in the vicinity, and/or, are expecting agressive pricing as you would get from purchasing from CarsDirect.com.
At this point, price should no longer be an issue (if they want to sell you a car) and only if they can get you the color/option combination of your dreams.
I am little confused. Didn't you negotiate the price before placing the order?
Purchase price depends on your location. If you are still negotiating, average transaction price is around 1500 to 1800 below invoice for 7PassLtd/DVD/NAV. Since your invoice is $37785, your target should be around $36100+TTL. Make sure the dealer doesn't add any crazy documentation/dealer fees.
No, the dealer didn't want any money upfront and said if I decide not to get it, they will sell it. It will take 6 weeks to get the color and all the stuff I want on it they said. Of course they would have liked for me to fall in love with another color that was right there on the lot!
The dealer will give me 15% off on what I first order. I was looking at the puddle lights and rear bumper cover. Why the auto-dimming mirror? How is the cargo tray useful?
Bob - I know you didn't direct your question to me, but I can't help chiming in. Puddle lights look great and the bumper cover's a must to avoid scratches, so those are good choices. Cargo tray is also vital. Got plants from the nursery, a bag of soggy potting soil, pumpkins from the farm, wet ski gear, dirty shoes/boots, or a family pet? The rubber tray will keep the cargo area clean and - most importantly - dry! When you're ready to sell or trade, the carpeting back there will look new, too. Don't worry too much about the price you paid. It wasn't as good as it could've been, but they certainly didn't take you to the cleaners. Live and learn, eh? Congrats on the sleek new ride. :shades:
Bob, I'll address the mirror. It automatically dims if the car's headlights in back of you are too bright - Do you need it , no, but once you have it you'll appreciate it.
The car is prewired for many of these add ons so you can sdd them any time.

They will probably beat that price.
I don't know where you live, but it may be worth the trip.
I saw my first Beca on the road today.
It was the blue-it was a neat color.

But- I've been watching and getting some Tribeca prices. If you can get an 07 for within about $500 of "Invoice-$1250' you're doing pretty well on an '07. The Invoice price would include the invoice price of the options as well, not the retail price. Seems like you're about there.

Any thoughts on price?
Their offer of $1200 under invoice seems good to me... probably offering you nearly all of the factory-to-dealer incentive, leaving them with essentially just the holdback as profit.
I haven't heard of any change to the invoice price... if anything, Subaru would offer an additional incentive to the dealer rather than change the actual invoice price, I would think. Also, no rebates offered on '07 Tribecas yet, at least in my region.
Drove the car for a few hours. Great on the curves. Love the Diamond Gray color and the toys. Only knock is second gear seems a little weak if not using the sport shift.

cargo tray, rear bumper cover, all weather mats( you can buy any brand for this - shop the auto stores), auto dimming day-night mirror.

But- the negotiation starting point is (I'll say it again)
Invoice minus $1250.
At this point, price should no longer be an issue (if they want to sell you a car) and only if they can get you the color/option combination of your dreams.
good luck, have fun,
Purchase price depends on your location. If you are still negotiating, average transaction price is around 1500 to 1800 below invoice for 7PassLtd/DVD/NAV. Since your invoice is $37785, your target should be around $36100+TTL. Make sure the dealer doesn't add any crazy documentation/dealer fees.
Good Luck!
I sent another reply but it never posted! Anyway, that information is very helpful to me.
And this dealer sells other items too like Jeeps and stuff so it isn't their most expensive car.
The dealer will give me 15% off on what I first order. I was looking at the puddle lights and rear bumper cover. Why the auto-dimming mirror? How is the cargo tray useful?
Bob
I know you didn't direct your question to me, but I can't help chiming in.
Bob, I'll address the mirror. It automatically dims if the car's headlights in back of you are too bright - Do you need it , no, but once you have it you'll appreciate it.
The car is prewired for many of these add ons so you can sdd them any time.
