scorpio- how can you upgrade the wheels to 16's when they already come with the 16's? and please re-check your numbered wheels, which one is #3, as you have two labeled #2. and the price i dont want to exceed is $23000 before taxes, after haggling. not retail, that wouldn't be possible.
Ben
In a Taco (this is at least true for 2001 which is what did my research on before) 4x2 models come with R15 tires. When you get a 4x4, you need to upgrade the tires to the R16, and you have 3 choices for that: steel, chrome or alloy.
Just another money game by Toyota. Good thing about TRD is that you get the alloys as part of the package. So the whole package is 1.3K, tires are 760, that leaves about $600 for bilsteins ($50/each, I think), fenders and the rear locker.
Whats up with you and Toyota? Are you giving up on the Ranger?
tbunder/scorpio
-The TRD package does have a different leaf spring setup. I don't know if it's stiffer springs, or heavier duty or what. -but they are different in some way from a non-trd taco. I'll try to find out the diff. and let you know.
Ben
eagle- we knew they were different in some way, but didn't know how. you didn't shed any light on the subject. im positive they're just re-gauged a little. toyota wouldn't change them that much. and im thinking they may be softer sprung for off-road duty. that may explain why the TRD pkg. lowers your tow weight rating. the diff's are the same i assume on all 4x4 V6's. TRD's just get lockers.
scorpio- good to see we're now friends. hehe.
anyways, about my toyota prospects. as i told people in the other forum, i will put my ranger up for sale in january. i have a 2 yr old, and i need a back seat. i originally was going to get a frontier, but they just don't really do it for me. not rugged enough looking for me, and imo, the tacoma looks similar to the new '01 rangers, with its raised hood, reflector lamps, and over all truck look. im still torn on the wheels. i will probably just say screw it and get that popular package on toyotas build your own website that includes everything i need including those alloys. i can always buy the steel wheels later for winter use. anyone know how much they are? anyways, you never told me about your pricing. is dickering possible with toyota dealers? even when ordering? i want to order to get it as cheap as i can. later dudes
also, i have a '01 Ranger ext. cab 4 door with the off-road pkg, it rides awesome. doesn't bounce at all. i know they worked on the spring rates for '01, along with enlarging the brakes. also, that new SOHC 4.0 is head and shoulders better than the old pushrod 4.0, although that older motor can go forever if taken care of. in my hometown, there is a rural mailman who has a '93 ranger 4x4 with the 4.0, he has 225000 miles on it and it still goes strong. he has had no trouble with it, replaced water pump once he said. pretty cool.
I guess your best bet would be to pick all the packages you want, ask for the factory invoice price, take 2% off (dealer holdback), and then add 5% as the profit for the dealer, and go with that. To give you an idea about factory prices(I got the pricing info from fightingchance.com package):
2001 Toys:
4x4 DC: 19,877.00
SR5 chrome: 842
SR color: 818
Power without mirrors: 544
Power with mirrors:640
TRD:929
For 2002:
4x4 DC: 20,018.00
SR5 chrome: 842
SR5 color: 821
Power with mirrors: 660
TRD: 945
Well, at least you are not buying a F150.
As far as steel wheels go, there's no need to overpay. I thought you could easily select those for the DC. If not.....talk to the dealer, see what they say. Granted, most salespeople are dumb, but you might get a good one (When i went to the dealership, I had to explain to the sales what their trucks had, specs wise)
Good luck
I went with the alloys because the steel wheels on my Nissan rusted on me after 8 years and I plan on keeping this truck for a while if I can. The TRD ride is harsher than the nonTRD but it still isn't rough unless you are accustomed to Caddys and Lincolns. The Tundra is bigger than I want and seems to another step toward consumerizing the pickup truck. It's just to cushy for me.
Whether or not you can haggle with a Toyota dealer or not depends entirely on the dealer. It is even harder to find a dealer that will special order and negotiate too. I bought my truck over the phone and drove two and half hours to pick it up after it came in.
but are what you guys saying is that i can go and order whatever i want? as in power and trd? if thats true, it may be cheaper. how much is the locker anyways? that may be cool to have since they don't offer a lsd according to the brochure.
the reason i would even consider the steel wheels, is because on page 22 of the '01 brochure, it shows a flareside tacoma 4x4 with the black paint and color sr5 pkg, it has these wheels and looks sweet. i could always buy the alloys off ebay or something.
also, whats with the hi-4 selector switch? is this push button 4x4 or what? i thought you guys liked the lever? later
The hi-4 switch is a pushbutton on the side of the lever. Skip it, it will only give you trouble down the road and it's not that hard to engage the lever. Also, the TRD parts division does offer an after-purchase option of limited slip that can be installed by your dealer. You might be better off to go aftermarket if limited slip is what you want, though. The painted steel wheels do look kinda cheesy, especially when they are on a lunar mist truck that is a near perfect paint match for them.
I don't remember seeing what area of the country you are in. If you are in an area served by Southeast Toyota distributors or Gulf States Toyota distributors, you may have more of a problem getting something close to a base unit. I know that SE likes to sell only the higher profit, optioned units and I have heard the same about Gulf States.
I would suggets going to the individual web sites for Toyota dealers in your area and request price quotes to the internet/fleet sales mgr for the exact color/option Taco and see what they come back with. You may find something close to what you want or an exact match or the dealer may offer to factory order for you.
I had a dealer in Washington who was willing to do a factory order for $600 over dealer invoice but was willing to match or beat any quote I had from another Toyota dealer. Toyota dealers will compete to get your business. I read on a lot of the other threads that Toyota dealers are arrogant. Maybe some are but I did not find that to be the case. I got my 4x4 Dcab for $450 over dealer invoice. Good luck.
The reason for 16" wheels is to fit bigger disc brakes on the front and most of the public thinks wheels size has to do with rim and forget about other numbers like the actual tire size.
Spend the money on 3" suspension lift. TTORA guys say that if you go with the lift, you'll end up replacing all teh components anyway. You need a lift if you want to clear bigger tires (33") anyway.
Toyota of Nashua, in NH, if you want to take a drive...
4 months is BS as is 1000 below MSRP...
Buddy got his for 300 over, but he didn't order.
Remind them that auto sales make up 24% of the economy's sales and that sales are down, way down!
Good Luck

I have been complaining with the dealer, and Toyota_cares@toyota.com with problems with my truck. They just gave me a "go screw yourself" attitude. I emailed the Nummi plant, (since it is GM(UAW), no reply), and Toyota Japan. Japan send the email to OTP and I got their attention, but not for long. The guy told me there will be no more correspondence between him and I, since the dealer is handling the issue.
I ask the assistant of OTP if I can get a new truck, he said no, have to go thru arbitration with a third party firm (paper work is in the mail).
I ask the assistant of OTP if they can replace my engine and tranny, he said the dealer will contact me early next week.
I told the assistant of OTP why Toyota_cares@toyota.com can not answer any basic question, he just said, "why didn't you ask the supervisor", like customer service can only answer questions in the owners manual.
I ask the assistant of OTP if they can replace the clock of my truck with a Pac-Rim type clock (different size and location), he said NO.
I ask the assistant of OTP if he want all the correspondence of emails I received from Toyota, he said not necessary. I guess he knows it's pretty bad.
I ask the assistant of OTP if he can find out where the engine and tranny is made, he said he can't, and does not offer other ways of getting the info.
I will not be buying another Toyota and will no recommend anyone to buy one, because if you get a lemon, you are screwed.
Has anyone done an air intake upgrade? I have seen these in mags from companies like K&N that advertise increased mileage and hp. Any real life experiance out there, did it work? I am happy with what I have, but ya know, always want more power.
thanks
Since the model I specified is not available with factory alarm installed (only on the Limited), I plan to make an appointment to have a Low-Jack system installed, along with a more "conventional" alarm system. Any recommendations to the latter? Thanks!
You did great on your invoice+500 deal. I spent time on Edmunds and CarsDirect mostly to figure what I wanted to pay. Picked my options, then hunted for it myself. I then called a local dealership that had a good rep for being fair, and got them to do a dealer trade for the one I wanted. Installed the extras, and handed me the keys (after I gave em a fat check). I am happy with my deal, but I think you got me beat.
Now it's time to accessorize.
Have fun with your DC, and good luck on the security system.
check out http://www.tacomaterritory.com tons of good Tacoma info. Check out the deck plate mod for the airbox, as well as the K+N and AMSOIL air filter setups...
Congrats on the new D-CAB(s)
-wsn
I have seen the Tacoma Territory page, and read the deck plate mod. I might give that a shot. I was also saw a mod for the turn signal. Any idea why you would want to do that? What was gained? Only thing I can think of was that you could then use the lights below the bumper on the front as extra running lights with another mod.
thanks
What polish and wax do you use or recommend?
I want to take this job away from the detailer.
Thanks
Hi-Tech Yellow Wax
It works great, no polish needed, since the truck is new, and no cleaner wax needed. i use the cleaner and polish and the clay on my older cars. I prefer and can wax over the plastic bottle, because the coat is thicker.
I like this one better. I also would order the diesel instead of the V6. What do you think of the HiLux?
How about everyone else?
I live in the Bay Area. I am looking for a 02 Tacoma DC Prerunner. The best deal I can get is $500 off from MSRP price. Does anyone know a Toyota dealer closer to the bay that offer a good deal?
Thanks
There is a bug shield and nothing is the stuck
one th bottom of the hood.
I wish they had the 23mm ZSU option, it would be great also against people driving with cell phones.

I'm ready to buy a DC that will be fairly loaded. I had the internet manager contact me after an Autovantage inquiry. He offered 3% over DEALER COST. WOW! That's what I thought, until we started talking about closing the deal.
It turns out he is the former F&I manager, now he is the Internet Sales Manager for Universal Toyota in San Antonio. We started out with the invoice prices for everything (FYI - Dealer cost for the Double Cab V6 Prerunner 2wd is $16,807). We added the options at invoice. I'm still happy at this point. Then he added MAF $252, Delivery/Proc/Handling $535, TDA $189, Base-Veh-HB $379, PIO-HB $7, Finance Reserve $189. After he totalled all of these fees, he then added 3% to this figure which exceeded TMV price with options by over $500, or just above 5% over invoice price. We were not in the same neighborhood as 3% above dealer cost. Suddenly, I'm not so happy anymore.
While I realize that he did a major no-no with how he performed the math (he should have taken 3% of just the vehicle and options AND THEN added the fees), I'm left with a question. Did any of you recent DC buyers pay any of the above fees? If so, what fees did you pay? Which fees are legit? I will buy one of these soon. I'm ready now. I would appreciate some guidance on the fees.
Thanks.
Roberto
My next vehicle purchase will be done over the internet to the lowest bidder.
P.S. Whatever you do, don't go to Classic Toy in Roundrock. They tried to screw me over big time (selling me a 21K truck for 30K)
P.P.S. if Champion Toyota deal doesnt work, check out the dealership in Humble, TX. They were first ones to contact me with a truck, and at the time ( Somewhere like Nov 5th) they had sales of 1%-9% over invoice on Xtracabs, so there just might be something for the DC as well.
Here's my deal that I close this coming Wed:
2002 white DC SR5 chrome (V6), TRD, power package, cruise control, daytime running lights, sliding rear window, body side molding, spare tire and wheel locks - out the door (TTL and everything) for $23,442.67. I missed the TMV price by about $200 over. But when I pick up the EXACT truck I wanted after only a four day wait (instead of 6 months from Cavender in San Antonio), I'll be a happy camper.
And on the topic of San Antonio dealerships: Avoid Alamo Toyota. The internet manager was a sarcastic tool. I can only imagine the nightmare of trying to close a deal with that jerk. But on the good side, I really liked the folks at Cavender Toyo off loop 410. They were kind, courteous, and professional. They could match the Champion deal, but I wasn't willing to wait up to 6 months for a new car. Kevin Rumsey at Red McCombs was great about contact, and he seemed very honest. But I could only get a good price from a vehicle on the lot. And I didn't like the colors/options I would be limited to. It would also take a long time to order from them.
I'll keep you posted. But if this Champion deal goes as well as I'm thinking it will (I've got a good vibe, plus go figure the EXACT DC I wanted is a few days away in transit - and no one had put the glom on it...) I'll post the results after I drive it home. Basically, I'll post the results regardless. But I do feel that Brian is being straight up with me. We'll see.
Thank you all for the great info! It has made a big difference in reducing the stress associated with buying a new vehicle.
I have to say, I am somewhat disillusioned with the online buying services. They seem to direct you to a dealership that lures you onto the lot. It seems like all the online services do is "leads management" for the dealers.
I didn't see any benefit to contacting Autovantage, Stoneage, or Invoicedealers. All they did was farm me directly to an internet salesman. You can do this by sending an email to the dealership. To get in touch with Champion, I just sent the dealership a direct email. I'm finding the online car buying services (the ones listed above, anyway) to be pretty worthless.
But I've also found that the community here at Edmund's is the best thing to ever happen to consumers buying a new sled! The info from this site is very empowering.
