You are correct - the buyer agrees by signing and the bank agrees by funding. But once the buyer signs and drives over the curb it is a car deal from his end - he cannot back out of his own volition.

North Carolina seems like a shaky state to buy a new Corvette even if they are a few hundred cheaper. As a cash buyer, when I pay I expect a title or at least a Certificate of Origin and a bill of sale which will ease me through Virginia DMV where I pay my taxes and get a Virginia Title in my name on the spot. NC wants to collect taxes. What taxes? That is not going to happen when I have to pay taxes directly to DMV in Virginia, usually the same day. Also NC dealers provide no instrument of ownership. What happens when they collect taxes and the taxes are not sent to Virginia DMV? No thanks to NC cars! Hold your titles till they turn to dust.

    Gee, Snakeweasel,

Gee caught with my guard down

They have changed that test so much no I am not even sure what the parts are called now. Back when I took it it was something like 19.5 hours over two and a half days and calculators were not allowed.

Easy big guy! Put the beer down and step away from the blonde! What brought this on? No dealers hold the titles for new cars. Certificate of origin yes but not a title. These are issued by the respective DMV. If you want the MSO you have to let the dealer know in advance so they can get it from their operations department. MSO's are not something we have laying around.

We do quite a few out of state deals, mainly Neb, WY, and SD. We usually do not collect out of state taxes. If we do, we send a check with title work to the out of state DMV, or cut a check to the buyer to pay his out of state taxes.

If the deal is financed, I believe the MSO goes to the bank. In any case, the title is cut by the state of registration when the customer goes for his plates.

I'm not a sales person, but I have bought many new cars. What is this MSO you speak of? Virginia DMV is so efficient I don't see why every state doesn't do it this way. I have heard getting the Certificate Of Origin essentially makes me a car dealer. No offense, but I don't want to be a car dealer. West Virginia can't do Virginia DMV work so gives me the COO which I take to my DMV with the bill of sale and a few taxes later I'm out of there with Virginia title, plates (1 year or 2 years, sir?). Easy. I just happen to live 30 miles from W VA and 30 miles from NC. W VA can sell me a car anytime, but NC...NO WAY. Maybe I should just go to Bowling Green (130 miles away) with a cashiers check and yell...

    wait for it...

Does anybody want to sell me a Corvette today? :)

The MSO is the certificate of origin. On a cash deal we mail all the paperwork to the customer after the check clears. That includes the application for title and the bill of sale. We put a 60 day temp tag on all sold units.
  • patpat Member Posts: 10,421
Hmm... I bought a car in NC and registered it in Va with no issue whatsoever.

"...just to try to intimidate me...I'm about 5-6 and 125 lbs...and the GM was 6-2 and maybe 250lbs..."

And he needed a gang of salesmen to intimidate you? Sounds like a typical bully to me. I bet you could have cleaned his clock.

Taxes on a 2008 Corvette are substantial. I suspect NC dealer wanted to have me pay taxes and never turn them in to Va DMV. Probably call them NC sales tax once they have them. I give a cashiers check or one of the gold plated check(gold stripe on the bottom that no one ever questions) and expect some sort of ownership instrument as I title and register the car later that day in Va (after taxes are paid). There is no way they can have the taxes at DMV before I can drive there and I'm not going to stand there with a NC receipt that Va DMV will take. They seemed to be playing fast and loose with all the paperwork shuffling and signing with nothing coming my way but promises. I told them I wanted a title when I gave money. They said no so I said I promise to pay when I get a title. End of story. He has car and title. I'm back where I was. Why can't one of you guys I've begun to trust sell Corvettes?

Well, this really depends on the laws of each state.
In AZ, if you were to buy a car and take it to VA,you would pay the 4% VA tax here, plus the city and county tax for AZ.
Your buyers order would show the tax paid,so VA can't collect it twice.
On a new or used car,we would give you an AZ title, which you would give to the VA DMV.
  • lrguy44lrguy44 Member Posts: 2,197
And a dealer does not have a title to a new car.

I'm a VA resident. Last year we purchased in North Carolina. Filled out all the required VA DMV paperwork at dealership along with the required VA license/registration fee and the VA state sales tax.
The dealer put a "temp" NC plate on car, bill of sale, NC registration etc.
We received the new VA license plates in the mail in 2 weeks along with vehicle registration then went and had the VA state inspection done.
Real smooth and flawless and one helluva a convience for us.
Don't see the problem here. The NC dealer was setup for this and "happens all the time". Altho it was a Lexus dealer.

My last car cost more than my first house. The closing on my last house had less paperwork than my last car purchase. Why not Car Title Insurance! You wouldn't buy a house without it. Cars are even more prone to Title problems. I believe taking an attorney to my next car purchase will be a good idea. My lawyer will make it happen just the way I want it. I'll give him... get this "power of attorney" and tell him my buy in price. He can even be my negotiator. The lawyers fee will be based on a percentage of the cost he saves me off MSRP. An attorney and a car salesmen grinding for percentages. Now that's something I'll pay to see! Dave

About a week later they tell me to bring the car back, so i go to my bank to put a stop payment on the downpayment check, but they sent it through the previous day. 2 weeks after taking the car back, i still didn't have my downpayment back, so i go to the dealership and it gets real ugly (this is after they told me each day for the last week that the check would be ready the next day).

Why would you have even thought of returning the car until they refunded your down payment? I’m sure you won’t do that again.

I think the Lexus dealer had everything to do with it. Chevy dealers there are not what I would call trustworthy. I've been to a Lexus dealer in Virginia Beach when Lexus was new there in 1991 or 1992. It was like nothing I'd ever experienced before at the rummy dealerships. That place was so relaxed and unassuming. I regret that I passed as I really would have liked the car and of course the service, but at the time they were way more pricey than anything I'd ever seen. Now we all know why. Maybe after I get this Corvette bugaboo out of my system I'll try Lexus again.

How does the level of discount of a GM employee 'friend' (I understand each GM employee can have a friend purchase each month)....compare to a supplier discount?

I currently get a supplier discount, and am wondering if I can be adopted by a GM employee....if that is much more of a discount.

What do you do, have them deflate and inflate during a rotation? How does it help? Is nitrogen really any better?

I'm doing a little testing of nitrogen. You can read about it and leave comments at Nitrogen: A Noble Gas?

If I was to let a MSO AKA Certificate of Origin or a title out of this place before the check cleared it would be my last official act as the F&I Manager here.

If I have a MSO I can title the car in my name with no problems. A less then scrupulous Person could get the MSO, put a stop payment on his check, and go title the car in his name. Then say, "What do you mean its not my car? I have the title right here in my hand.

If there is to be a lien on a out of state deal I charge the person taxes based on the state they will be titling the car in and then forward the BOS, MSO, and a check for the taxes I collected to there County Clerk/DMV, or who ever handles it in there state.

That is how we get our lien recorded. We have 15 days to do what is called "Perfect" the lien. if we do not perfect our lien then the lender can make us pay off the contract.

Now there are exceptions I guess to every rule. For instance my parents have driven in from Idaho to buy a 2008 Taurus that I ordered for them. Seeing it is my folks I will just give them all the paper work and let them go to the clerks office when they get home.

I envy the dealers who are allowed to just give the paper to the customer and tell them to handle it. It would be much smoother that way.
  • jescuejescue Member Posts: 521
Same for us. No way do we release an MSO until the check has cleared. I cannot even send an MSO for a dealer trade without a check unless it is someone I know very well.

Exactly you just don't have MSOs out. Well over half our deals are cash and we have never given a MSO to a person for an in state or out of state deal. The MSO isn't even at this office it is at the main office where all the other paperwork is sent. That office collects and processes everything then sends the necessary paperwork to the DMV. If it is a cash deal the DMV will send the owner the title in a few weeks.

It is boring down rain here and one of my coworkers wore his expensive leather soled shoes. You can get those kind of shoes wet or they will be ruined.

He has a car across the parking lot at the detail department that he needs to put gas in so he calls the detail guy and asks him to drive the car under the awning so he won't get wet.

Our detail guy laughs and says yeah sure I will do it how much you gonna pay me.

This is too funny they are now negotiating over the phone. Updates to follow...
  • jescuejescue Member Posts: 521
I learned not to wear those for work. The pavement just grinds them away, not to mention they get slick when its wet. Why is he being so fancy? Seems that is not the rugged Land Rover image. :confuse:

You couldn't give my dad a car from the rising sun.

The Taurus, like the Fusion is as good as anything Honda makes and better then anything Toyota has to offer.

Not to mention it is the safest car on the road.

It is also twice the car the 500 is. I own a 500 and I drove my parents new car home last night. I am very impressed
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,960
I hope (and think) that it will do well. It should hit the sweet spot for a lot of buyers if they give it the chance. Tons of room and a huge trunk, and now more pep with the 2.5l (although I doubt many 500 owners really see a need for more oomph!)

maybe the extra bling will overcome the bland factor, but I always thought it was a more practical choice for many people than a 300 V6 was, just without the style (but at least you could see out of it!)

the Fusion was nice too. i considered one before I got my Accord. It did drive nice, but I never understood the silly power seat with a manual recline.

The car has over 600 improvements from the 500. The Soprano's could make good use of the car, there is no telling how many bodies you could fit in that 21+ cubic feet trunk. :D

a car from the rising sun

My Solara was built in Georgetown, Kentucky and I gotta tell you they did a nice job. Sun rising in KY.

Did they put an engine in the Ahem..Mullaly..Taurus yet. I liked the 500 styling, but a 4.9 would make it a seller. The slightly higher stance is good for old folks as ease of entry gets tougher with age.

Joel, as one who has owned or leased 4 Fords ('98 Escort, '99 Expedition, '02 Explorer, '03 Focus) in the past 10 years, I am very optimistic on the new Taurus.

However, the only thing that would prevent me from pulling the trigger is the lack of a 'manumatic' feature for the 6-speed transmission. Isn't that the transmission that Ford and GM co-developed?

I know that in the Saturn Aura (with the 3.6L engine), there are paddles on either side of the steering wheel that can be used to shift up or down.

But, I know the Taurus can be had with AWD - quite useful here in Colorado!

Wow, you really have trust issues! ;) When buying out of state I have done one of two things:

When you finance, the bank insists on rolling the taxes into the transaction, so the dealership used a tax service to get my Texas tags (which were in my mailbox within a week), or I paid AZ taxes (AZ does not have tax agreement with TX) and paid the difference when I came home.

Paid cash by personal check a week before. Signed all the paperwork by Fedex. My checked cleared in three days. Drove home with temp CO tags. Dealership would also accept a wire, but no cashiers or certified checks on a Texas bank.
  • lemkolemko Member Posts: 15,261
Even if he wasn't $3,500 in the hole, he still couldn't get anywhere near $300 a month unless he planned on financing it for about a decade. If he had a $10K downpayment, a 60-month note would still be about a $500/mo. payment.
  • joel0622joel0622 Member Posts: 3,299
Let's see what they are worth in three years.

Honda loves to play that card, and on the average Joe Consumer it is probably real easy to get them to believe that it relates back to 100% quality. But as you and I both know it has to do with supply and demand, and as long as we stay in bed with the rental car companies the value of our cars will always suffer.

If we were to do soley retail on our cars and sell none to rental companies/fleet sales our units would be worth much more at trade in time to.
