After 50 years of smoking, I have to live with my decision. I just wondered if detailing the car would actually make a difference on the trading floor.

Your anser is yes!!! You would want to get it detailed and if you know a auto detailer that has a Ozone Machine, Which is what we call it you should use that too. WHen they appraise cars they are only in it for a few minutes and by having it Ozoned a couple times it ma take the smell out.
If you have burn holes that won't help. You should have shampood and ozoned and that will help.

Richard: I must be dense but what in the world is attached to the tool bench?

jmonroe: Will someone help him out, PLEASE!

Richard... you still out there? Let's make this a multiple choice question, just for fun.

QUESTION: What is attached to jmonroe's tool bench?

    A) Tidester
    B) Power drill/saw/sander
    C) Mrs. jmonroe
    D) jmonroe's tricycle from the fifth grade
    E) isellhondas poor CSI scores he didn't turn in
    F) a pair of vice grips which is jmonroes only vice. ;)

"I have to talk to my wife."

"Would you rather them say "I like the car, but I'm not sure of the price. I'd like to do a little more research to feel more comfortable before I make a final decision"

How would you respond to this one? If you ask them to come back to you and give you the last shot, you have just told them that you have not given them your best price"

Like I said, people that use that line have no clue what the market is. Most of the time I will ask if they know what a good price is on the car they are looking at. Most say no. I would respond like this. "So you like the car, you like the dealership, you like me?" I would ask. "Yes, I like you too." so I would go for the close. "Then what's keeping us from moving forward with the purchase today?" If he comes back with that line you gave me I would ask. "So you don't think this is a fair price? based on what?" and he will probably say what you said. "I have to do some research. And get back to you." To which I would say. "So no matter what price I give you today you will not buy at that price.?" if the answer is still no. I let them walk. Which leads to my next story.......;)image

Ok, I can see where a mistake could have happened. I explicitly told him no NAV, and the options he listed on the purchase order didn’t list the NAV.

As far as torque steer and CVT, it could be true. However, the car did pull to the left when I stepped hard on the gas. Could be underinflated tires. Also, the front wheels did spin a few times, and the car did skid a bit when I made a hard left turn at a light. Yes, it was on the dry pavement. On the SL, suspension is definitely softer than my 04 TL. I am just expressing my opinion.

Thanks, for the reply, I’ll try the SE.

Sounds like he made a mistake, I mean, if he was lying that's a lie you're GOING to get caught in.

When I worked the desk at a high volume store we would sell 300 cars a month, figure if we did really well and closed 50% of the people we got on paper that's 600 deals we worked a month, at least, that's 20 a day..etc.. people will make mistakes.

Now, if he said an arbitrary # like $32,500 then you have a case to call BS.

Last Friday evening I helped Frankie with a customer. I've become a surrogate mentor for Frankie as he has no clue what he's doing. When he and big Frank get together is like the blind leading the blind! :shades:

Frankie comes over to me and asks me for help. "Hey Mack, I need your help. I have this preacher looking for a Camry that he says he saw on our website for $17,790.00. You know anything about it?" he asks. "I sure do, it's an 07 Camry ce like this one image

I show him the car on our website and he brings the preacher over to my table. He introduces me as the "world's greatest salesman" And I offer the preacher a cup of coffee. After some small talk I find that he wants a Barcelona red Camry and also asks me if the LE's are priced around the same. "There's similar discounts on the remaining 07 LE'." I respond. I get up to check my inventory sheets and see there is only one CE left in Super white and a few LE's including a Barcelon red. :)
"Sir, the CE is white and it's the only left. We do have some Barcelona reds if you would like to take a look at them." I continue. "Sure, that be fine." we get up and walk out to the lot and I open a Barcelona red V6 SE image

and we head out to the overflow lot....

is it 'OK' to visit a dealership and start taking test drives???

What is the salesperson's perspective here?

My situation is that my lease is expiring in February.

I am unsure if I want/need a sedan, SUV, or cross over. Obviously, my choices are numerous. Due to work/family situation, I don't have much time to spend at dealerships at the last minute, so I think I need to start my search way before my lease is up.

I want to respect the salesperson's time, and want to let them know I am simply researching, and will not be ready to make a decision and purchase until February. What is the best way to go about doing this?

You should narrow your options to 3, maximum 5 models.
Test-driving all of them is perfectly fine, all you have to do is explain your situation to the salesman, try to do it on weekdays mornings or noons.
Also with highline models the early start will allow you to order your perfect car, and in February it will be waiting for you.
You also can pre-negotiate a nice deal for a sold order.

I drive the Camry se v6 down to our off site lot. It's only a couple of blocks but I take the long way over to enjoy the car. "This is nice! How much is this one?" asks the preacher. "About $30k. Only thing that's not in it is the nav system." image

As we get to the overflow lot our Preacher gets overcome with emotion
"Praise the lord! look at all these Camrys!" image

He walks all over the place and lands on a Barcelona LE with a sale price tag hanging on the mirror. "$19,962.00+ ttl" "Not a bad price heh preacher.?" says Frankie. Preacher says nothing. I open a couple of cars and find one with 3 miles on the odometer. "Hey Charles, this one has 3 miles. What do you say we work on this one?" I ask. "Ok, does it have the floor mats?" he asks. "yep, I checked the trunk already. They're in there."
So I pulled the car from the second line and get the 07 LE in plain view. "Ok, Frankie you and the Preacher head back in the LE. I'll follow you in the SE." ;)

So the car was not on the lot maybe they did a locate and found one with a higher MSRP (more options) that they figured they can get for you. Happens all the time. If this was the only hitch I would go back and clarify things if you want to do business at this location. Sometimes a little missing piece of the puzzle can ruin the whole picture. :)

    D) jmonroe's tricycle from the fifth grade

Let me help with the reduction process.

I wasn't allowed to have a tricycle until I was in the 7th grade. I hope this helps. :P

Mack, please give Mr. rowlandj one of those left over 07' Camry's since you have a ton of them in your overflow lot. If you can't swing a freebee for a fellow poster send the bill to Edmunds. :D

j....you and kyfdx will get a ride in the boat. Just probably won't be THIS BOAT.

I'd like to send it south, where the weather is always warm. Maybe trade it out for something a bit newer (fewer issues). This one was exactly 20 years old this summer. 60' would be pushing it. Upper end for me would be 48'.

I'm like the rest of you guys.....you tell me "free" and I'm all over it. Will never own another Caddy. But, we all love cars. I'm sure my name showed up on some computerized list. I got the "roll-out" invitation. Curiousity got the best of me. Walked into the dealership, and all the sales people scattered. SM came up to me, called me by name. Cordial as could be.

Told him I was only there for the shwag. He tossed me the keys to the nearest '08 CTS and told me to take a ride. I drove it for about 20 minutes. No sales person would ride with me, so I went off alone. Came back...parked it. Still, no one said a word to me. Had some food, a drink. Took one of their insulated car coffee mugs with a Caddy logo (nice mug..... I assumed they were free since they were stacked by the food). Walked out. That was the only conversation any of them had with me. Nobody asked for my contact info...nothing!

    That was fine by me.

"I will only take "Executive Producer" credit"

As long as I don't have to pay you like an "Exec Producer" :surprise:

I have not signed anything nor do I intend to until sometime next week regardless if the vehicle is in or not. He may want it to count in Sept, but if I don't actually sign anything or hand over any money till let's say Oct 5, how could he say that I wouldn't be eligible for October incentive (if any)?

If I have your dealerspeak correct it sounds like the dealer could pay Toyota for the vehicle before the end of Sept., but that's not my concern, right?

    Thanks for your input. metmdx

By the way it's an '08 Sienna
  • mackabeemackabee Member Posts: 4,709
Ok, as of today there is/are no incentives on the 08 image
that I know of. The 07's in my region CAT have $1500.00 cash back or 3.9APR for 60 months. I don't have a crystal ball so I can't tell you about October incentives on 08's if any. In the event any incentives come out, they will be known to the public by monday afternoon.

    Now don't pick on Tidester...

I help Tidester run his fan club... which currently is about as popular as a chubby drug addicted Brittany Spears. My contract states I am allowed to poke fun of tidester once every 3 months. He's a good sport and knows it's all in fun.

you had better watch out for isellhondas... he is a fiesty guy who will get you for that.

This part I don't get. The dealer paid Toyota already since the vehicle is on the way. Sounds to me like your salesperson wants to contract you in September so it counts for him as a September deal. Either way he gets paid whether you contract in September or October, he gets paid. The only question is which month? That's up to you.image
