Damn, rough crowd today, so far two people I don't even know and Mr Monroe of all people have all questioned my integrity and its not even 1:00 pm yet.
You are asking me if I have ever heard of Dave Ramsey? You obviously have not looked at my location. I live in Nashville, the home of Dave Ramsey, the guy who lives in TN and took advantage of our lax BK laws to file BK multiple times after his several attempts at business failed. Now he makes millions of dollars with a radio show telling people to pay the smallest debt off first and work there way up till there debt free so you can call his show and put your credit cards in a blender. Good advice but not exactly rocket science and I don't need to spend $500 to got to his financial university to do it.
He also advocates Consumer Credit Counseling and Bankruptcy and tells you how to dodge collection agencies. Hey Dave if ya borrow the money you got to pay it back.
He gives good advice but like you and several others here he takes things to the extreme.
I don't know if it is racism as much as culturalism
You don't hate people because of the color of their skin, so you're not a racist. It's more of a cultural thing like you were saying. People and cultures are different. That a certain ethic group likes to haggle for long periods is not a negative reflection on them, it is just they way they were brought up. In their culture it is a positive. At the same time, the quicker you sell the more you make.
It is a very interesting subject matter though, and I thank you for having the guts to share.
Didn't realize that the post was so long. I would write a few sentences and then go back to work. Repeat, repeat, repeat, and now I have a novel. Geez ...
Anyway, sorry. The length of my msg reminded me of the long msgs this guy used to post about mathematically deriving the formula for determining whether it was better to buy or to lease. That guy was hilarious.
Now my spelling to. What am I, the Rodney Dangerfield of Edmunds
But Joel, I gotta break my own rule and call you on the post where you talked about the caveman selling two pounds of tyrannosaurus (which you spelled correctly!) meet. Surprised no one else said anything about that one.
Didn't your second grade teacher ever tell you the memory trick for 'meat' and 'meet'? You eat meat, you don't eet meet. I used to razz some vegetarian friends of mine by telling them the spelling of meat makes sense, because when I see meat, my brain thinks "mmmmmmmmm...eat
Geez, give the salesman/F&I guys a break. Is it any wonder that salesman stop posting stories here?
I think the guys in the biz who hang out here have some thick skin but there is always that button that can be pushed. I also think they know what they’re in for when they come here. That’s not to say that posters have the right to yell bloody murder, call all salesman thieves, liars, etc. because they have had a bad experience or two purchasing a car.
It seems like the ones that show up here screaming the loudest are the ones who know they were taken advantage of because they went to the showroom not properly prepared and are now the experts that are going to save the day for all who will listen. Well, I know it doesn’t work that way; at least the regulars here can see through that.
I’m not going to make excuses for the car sales biz. It has the rep that it does for good reasons but when I hear the buyers say “all” and “every”, I’m on guard. We’ve had our share of guys in the biz who have passed through here with their tirades and they’re gone too.

Thank you jmonroe. I have sold cars for 10 years. I have found car salesman to be a micrococsm of life. There are good bad and everything in between just like in any other profession. I dont think the profession is inherently dishonest, no more than say plumbing, contracting or any other job where the general consumer doesnt know all of the ins and outs of the business. Would any of you say that your job is a dishonest profession? I think not and neither will I. I am just a single guy that comes to work to support myself and be a productive member of society. All I am trying to do is support myself and a slew of unwed mothers in the tri state area. Heck some of em arent even mothers yet, but Im trying .
Perhaps. But the mere fact that it is any kind of consideration on the sales frontline will lead some to draw unfavorable conclusions about salespeople that may or may not be true and the entire profession will be broadbrushed. Oh, wait! That would be prejudicial wouldn't it?
Many of you have, on occasion, bemoaned the fact that salespeople are judged unfairly by customers. I suggest that we not provide them with fodder and steer clear of generalizations particularly those based on ethnicity.
Thanks for the input. It is a little dicey to talk about because of the subject matter. However, it's a very real part of the business. We're always gingerly stepping around the matter, but in the end.... I'm there for business.
I think Joel commented on my statement about dumping a customer because of the fear of a bad survey. It's not something I let my SM know about, because he'd go crazy. However, our pay IS tied into the survey process (which is flawed to say the very least). If I have a guy who is grinding me out on a mini and I know is never going to be happy, then what's the sense in making $125 only to lose more over the course of 3 months because of him. It simply doesn't equate. (We have a 3 month rolling average on CSI that we must beat.)
Being where I'm from. I deal with Chinese, Vietnamese, Thai, Cambodian, etc. everyday. I can tell you one thing. If you've ever sold to the Chinese, you will find that yes, they are tough negotiators AND they will be your customer for life. If no one wants to deal with them that's great as there will be no competition.
And FYI the next wave that's coming is the Koreans. Yes they love to negotiate AND most of them do have a LOT of money to spend.....
Just my take as I'm not real particular on who's money I take...
This will be my last post on it if you want, Tidester. I'll ask one other question though.
If it IS a real part of our business and the prequalification is not of a malicious intent, then why not discuss it?
I think it would be naive to say that it doesn't exist. When I was in the food service industry, there were certain groups of people that you hated having sit down at your tables. Why? Because they tipped badly, they may steal from you, they complain about everything.
Anyhow, if you're simply not comfortable with the discussion, I'll stop. I'm just very curious.
This line of conversation is treading a very, very thin line. So, it's really best that we move on to something else.

The BF half of my element customer just called. I can take the vehicle to him tomorrow. Doesnt matter that I am coming in on my day off and driving 45 miles to take it to him. He's taking the dang car! All is well with the world! The sun is shining and birds are singing! Oh what a wonderful feeling....Element!

We normally do as well. This is the first time we have had a previous model year car hang on past February. I had it sold a few times and so did my partner but the deals always fell apart, or the changed to a different color.
Yeah, my last good up on it was your great great great great great grandpa. As far as the battle of Hastings, no - but it served during the War of The Roses as a flower car.
In the South, we NEVER place farmers in the Red Neck category. Not only were they the backbone of our economy, but they have suffered too much during the last 30 years. You made a good point---many farmers have college degrees. I figured that my explanation would offend someone. Sorry it was you.
Mack: You're on a roll; don't stop now ! These are better than your '3 parters'..... BTW, tomorrow is D-Day (as in delivery day). Finally getting it done. Will be away most of the weekend putting some miles on the new Sienna, but will try and crank up the 'epic' sometime next week. Thanks for all your help and will post all the fine details pre-epic. cheers, metmdx :shades:
Sorry about that. I forgot that it takes the SS# to get the score. When I go to the dealer in the morning, guess I'll wear the gold bracelet, the Polo shirt, and the Cole Haan loafers. Hope I can find those things. I haven't worn all of that junk since I retired two years ago. Yikes! I just rememberd that the last time I was there I wore my garden shoes and my cut off Levi shorts. Boy, will he be surprised.
The discussion was about prequalifying ups. It's not gospel and nor do I adhere to it completely. They are simply survival mechanisms.
If everyone had a bar code on their wrist that they scanned when they came in the door and it told us their beacon score..... yes, that would be awesome. Until then, I can only go off of 4 years of watching and helping people here at the dealership.

Man, that gives a whole new meaning to the term "meet and greet" :shades:
So the BF is buying the car?
Actually she is buying the car but needed his royal blessing. I am going to bite my tongue for 24 hours and deliver the car tomorrow night.
The last 2006 LR3 that is 393 days old today.
Could you tell us how many miles it had on it and what you let it go for? - Curious George
I sold it for 38,700 and MSRP was 51,400.
It has about 3,000 miles on it.
We have two 2007 LR3s left and one 2007 LR3 Service loaner that is a V6 so it will be hard to sell.
Really a 1007 Range Rover? Does that have wooden wheels? How many Ox Power does it have? Man that car is almost as old as you. :P
Was that Range Rover at The Battle of Hastings as Calvary Support?
BTW richard64 forgets to mention the literal meaning of "red neck": a person who works in the sun doing manual labor and acquires a red neck.
Also, as far as lack of education goes, I have a degree in Psychology and a Masters of Social Work and am also the proud owner of a very red neck.
