I overheard a sharp GreenPea working a buyer on a used widget today.

The Kid told the Buyer that the price was after Dealer loyalty and active military rebates of $1000 each.

I was dying when i sent him back in for the tax on the payment bump ;)

These are just for my students:

Sign in a dealership showroom: Let us help you get back on your feet. Miss a car payment! :D

Sign in a muffler shop window: No appointment is necessary. We can hear you coming! ;)

Hey, Mr. 64. . .if you should happen to make a mistake (OMG, that'd never happen, but. . .), it's possible to delete a blank or improper post (that'd be #22647) within 30 minutes of hitting the "enter" key. That way there woouln't have been a blank post on here until the cows come home.

I know I'm out on a limb here, but thought you might not already know. Not that it's possible that you could ever make such a thing as an error.

We imperfect souls are somewhat reluctant to raise our heads, but I thought I'd give it a shot.

Had Thanksgiving in Las Vegas... We stopped by Caesar's Forums Shops to look around and have lunch and I see this women, two kids (age 12 and 10 or so) and a black guy walking together.. I could see a few shop owners and kiosk owners commenting on the people walking by.

So, I ask one of the shop owners who are those people that everyone seem to recognize. It was Pamela Anderson wearing a solid tight fitting grey dress, flat shoes and tussled hair. Even after looking at her rather close, but not too close, I still didn't recognize her. Her "body" didn't seem as curved as seen on TV.

Anyway, no one seemed to bother them and she was wearing those big-bugged-eyed sunglasses. ;)

I guess the biggest gripe that I have with Korean cars is the dismal resale values. As used cars, they are very difficult to sell.

I suppose this could change in the future but for now, that's the way it is.

The reason why is they flooded the rental fleets in 06 with the current body Sonata. Toyota is starting to do that, GM and Ford are pulling back from that.

    On a Much Lighter Note:

A couple came in (Professors at a local University). Did my 3 minute presentation then test drive. Came back, the husband loved the Sonata for the room, but the wife wanted to drive a Civic. Brought back the numbers, (of course had to work it a little bit.

Their trade was a 92 Civic DX with 82,500 miles. We did check with DMV to make sure the miles were original and they were based off each registration renewal. :surprise: The first trade offer was $1,000, then we got it to $1,400. So, about an hour later, after discounting the car, and getting the payment into the $240's. She decided, we'll go with the Sonata, don't need to test drive the Civic. Hate to say it, but it feels so good to sell a Hyundai to a person(s) who was seriously thinking about a Honda!! (Yes, Honda is a great product). :shades:

So you are saying that the kid lied in order to bump the price $2000?

sounds like a BS ploy to me. I mean, I often use the line "well, i gotta go drive x, y, and z," and I may have no intention of doing so, but it does instill a sense of urgency in the salesperson. If I really do want to drive another car, however, ain't no deal going to keep me from doing so. How else would I know I made the right choice?

Dude, do you know how hard I work every day trying to kill the exact stereo type you are portraying?

How you run your dealership is your business, but all it takes is a person to read that one place is bumping rebates back into selling prices and suddenley we are all guilty of it in the consumers mind.

Don't get me wrong, I like hitting the ball out of the park just as much as the next guy and am shooting for a $5K plus on every deal I start but I do it through being a good sales person not through through all that crap that was common place in the 80's and 90's.

Like I said if thats how you all run thats fine, but please don't broadcast it here. I would guess edmonds has 10K members reading it.

A dealer can offer in house rebates on preowned. Dealer loyalty is not the same as owner loyalty.

I have to give the greenpea credit for Quick thinking. The Pea made a $4500 dollar payable on top of a $3500 dollar pack. The Pea's net commision is close to $1300.

I can’t answer your question about what the MB needs but I’m surprised you could get away with a hose clamp to fix a leaking power steering hose.

BMWs and Mercedes(among others) use a separate P/S reservoir. The two hoses that connect to the reservoir operate under low pressure and are usually secured with crimped-on clamps. These clamps often loosen up causing a small leak. Replacing the crimped clamp with a good worm-gear clamp often fixes the problem.

It's hard for me to believe they didn't already know a lot about the Civic and knew pricing as well. They are educated people and like me probably keep up on homework about the cars in which they might be interested when they're thinking they are in the market for a car. They liked what they saw and made the choice then.

If i could split the difference with you can we do business now?

The car business in florida is still the wild wild west. Here in my market if i don't get them the first time someone at a different dealership will club them like a baby seal.

I think the Greenpea has closer potential!!!!

I'm glad that you spoke up as sadly that kind of thing does still occur and will continue to occur as often times people don't know where to look to get the facts. Helps explain why someone might walk into a dealership "prepared for battle" when you've dealt with someone like that in the past. I once had a salesmen tell me that he had to pass on a fee of $798.00 to verify that there was oil and transmission in the vehicle so yeah it still goes on sadly.

It easily could have been gbrozen. But this was a woman who has her 92 Civic since she bought it new. With her having a Honda currently and being 15 years old, great chance she wanted to go drive a Honda just because of her current car.

cust; i am here to see your 2008 widget that you have in the paper.

deskman; That unit is a outstanding value ,i cant see why no one has purchased it yet.

cust; You still have it in stock?

deskman; yes i do .the unit is fully repaired and ready for sale.

cust; fully repaired? what was wrong with it?

deskman; the unit fell off the truck during delivery.

cust; I dont want a wrecked car. :surprise:

deskman; You are in luck i have a undamaged one with the same options for 5,000 more or i have some 2007 ones with just a few miles for the same price. :shades:

I think it's big of you to post this and am glad you stand behind it, but I'm also glad that deskman is open honest about what goes on at some dealerships. This is a good forum for people to educate themselves to see both sides and recognize what is going on. The more deskman posts about it the more people will be aware. I say post on deskman!

I read the rants here too and sometimes think that buyers need to be a little more grown up about things. I know when I'm getting bumped and I know when we are doing the email dance to try to get me into the dealership. I know the sale figures and YoY numbers of the cars I'm looking at buying and most of the dealer cash and rebates and a broad sample of prices paid postings from various sources. Why shouldn't I get a better deal, than someone who doesn't want to or can't invest the time?

It's all good if buyers learn to take more repsonsibility for what they do. You go in and ask for a payment only, that's all you should deserve.

Joel, some people give you a hard time for selling extended warranties and service contracts and marking up buy rates. All they got to do is say "no" or get their own fianancing. Last time I checked the Best Buy cashier was not the source of rants for asking if you want an extended warranty on that digital camera.

The downside of this is that you may get broadbrushed as a crooked car guy. Unfortunate fall-out. But then again, people need to make their own assessments.

Actually, the story is much more interesting than that

while the Japanese watched and learned.

The actual credit to the rise of the Japanese automobile is given to an American by the name W. Edwards Deming (and what he learnt from Walter Shewart). He was "literally" given the boot out by the bean counters of US car companies for his recommendations on Quality control.

Later when the Japanese came out on top, and big guns from GM/Ford inquired their counterparts in Japan, the Japanese told them that they had read their (USA) Quality Control books written by Deming and followed his recommendations. That is all.

It was like a slap in the face of all these bean counters who threw out Deming and his ideas.
