Sometimes if someone has excellent credit over a 750 we will take a personal check at time of signing the contracts.

I can understand that but what I don’t understand is why/how dealers accept a personal check from a total stranger without running a credit check?

When I bought my last three cars (05’, 06’ and 09’) I paid by check and none of the dealers (all three were different) ask for my particulars so they could verify who I was. The thing that surprised me the most was the guy in Ohio when I bought the Genny in March of this year. I called him on a Thursday night and told him I wanted to put a deposit on the car so that he’d hold it until I could drive over there on Saturday. I gave him my credit card number for the deposit and when I ask him how he wanted paid; cashiers check, bank check, certified check or if he’d accept a personal check. I was kidding about the personal check comment but he said we’ll accept a personal check (after he checked with the sales manager). :confuse: I said OK but if you change your mind when I get there it will be a no sale because I do not plan to finance. I was planning on checking into financing when I got back to the Burgh. He said, “don’t worry your check will be fine”. I know my credit is pretty good but at that time he didn’t know anything about me.

We go to Ohio, everything works out and before we go into the F&I office, the F&I guy comes over to the salesman’s desk and says, “I can give you a $750 instant rebate” (he said that offer popped up on his computer just that morning when he logged on). I’m thinking ‘yeah, right, what’s the catch’. He said, “if you qualify for Hyundai financing and you finance at least $10K you can save $750 on the spot. I know you didn’t plan to finance but with that kind of a deal I think you’ll reconsider”. You’re darn right I’ll reconsider so I give him my particulars. He goes off and comes back in about 15 minutes smiling and shaking his head then says, “you really qualify, both of you have a score of 861” and immediately says “I never saw a husband and wife that had identical scores”. I said, “why is that so surprising? We have the same credit cards, same accounts with both of our names on them etc., etc.” He says, “I’m telling you it never happens like that and I‘ve never seen this before”. Then he goes on to say, “just make three payments and then pay it off after that if you want”.

BTW, when did scores start to come back in numbers like 861? When we refinanced in 03’ the scores were in increments of 5 and at that time we had different scores because I had a big box lumber outfit credit card in my name only, with a balance on it because I was taking advantage of their no financing charge if paid within 90 days offer.

I heard here, I think it was ‘joel’, who said if you pay off the loan before three payments are made the dealer doesn’t get any credit/money for the financing. So, although I won’t be saving all of the $750 after financing for three months, I plan to uphold my end of the deal since if he didn’t bring it up I wouldn’t have saved anything. FWIW, Son #1 was with me and had his financial calculator and did a quick calc and said I’d save a little over $600 after paying the biggest hit for the first 3 months of financing but like I said, if the F&I guy hadn’t brought up the offer I wouldn’t have saved anything.

So there, I’m a nice guy after all :) and have good credit but none of the dealers knew any of that; yet they were willing to let me write a personal check without running my numbers. :confuse: :confuse:

There is lots of interesting stuff in your post JM. I am always sceptical when I am offered a fantastic rebate like $750 to get their financing. It just has to be at a higher rate than the bank, and it sounds too good a deal for most people to pass up....it is designed to be a nice little scam. But, you played it exactly right, get your rebate, then pay for the car as soon as possible, it's like beating the system.

Yes, he played it right. I would wager, however, that probably 80% of people would not have had the experience to handle this properly, would not have gone to the trouble to follow through and pay off the loan, or would not have been financially able to do so.

I see youngsters throw small change in the gutter from time to time. If I see a penny on the ground I pick it up. Can't help myself. :)

Yes, probably 80% of people are poor about money. A few years ago we bought a $1500 refrigerator from a department store......you don't have to pay for one year. We could have paid cash but why not use their money to buy the fridge. The catch is if you don't pay for it right on the day one year is up, you pay for the interest for the whole year at 24%. There is definitely a sucker born every minute!

On the excellent consumer show Marketplace (in Canada) it is amazing how many people apply for a loan from companies that advertise on the internet. You can get $10,000, $20,000 or more, all you have to do is wire a security deposit of $3500! One guy applied for a $30,000 loan and sent in his $3600 deposit. Marketplace couldn't find the office they said they were located in, and when they were told they were being investigated the website disappeared. Internet Loans

....that sells Fords (or am I thinking of someone else?) How are the new Fusion Hybrids going? Are they selling for any ADM anywhere you know of?

Reason I ask is yesterday I went with a friend who is looking for a new car and really would like to get the new Fusion Hybrid. We went to a local dealer who had a basic one for the $27-28K sticker but they had an additional market adjustment of $6K on the car. My friend balked on the whole deal and I suggested looking at what other dealers around were asking for it.

Somehow I find that hard to believe if you were just looking for car prices, options and TMV. My guess is that there are many times more requests for that information than there are people taking that information and going to the dealer. By that I mean that someone will go and research three or four vehicles then choose one then go to the dealership and those that discuss certain aspects of certain cars and look this information up to aid in their discussion. So I would suspect that the noise to signal ratio would make this information rather useless.

    Isn't $21000 to $22000 ($27 - 28k - $6k) a good price for a Fusion Hybrid?

On a down payment not a problem. On a cash deal back up contract with credit check is the best way.
  • driver100driver100 Member Posts: 32,639
Just curious....Let's say I come into your dealership and within 30 minutes I find a car in stock that I like that costs $25k. I write a check for the full amount (good credit rating).

How long will it take before I drive away? What will you be doing to make sure my check will clear?

When I bought the car before my present one the salesperson I was talking to called and asked me if I was still interested in buying. I said I would buy, if they would knock $1000 more off the new car and give me $1000 more for my trade in. He hesitantly agreed. Since it was all verbal I didn't know whether it was a trick (how much we trust car dealers I guess). It was all good and they accepted a personal check as a down payment, of course the car was ready a few days later - stock item - so they had time to make sure the check would clear.

Which raises another question I would be curious to have answered. In your opinion to more cheques bounce on low priced cars, such as Kia's, or at the luxury dealership, such as Mercedes ?

Here is a good link with a ton of payoff numbers. I use the heck out of it daily.

Hey Buddy..... How are you doing down there? Thank you for the link. I made it one of my favorites.... Sometimes you get people from out of state with different banks than the ones we use. Every bit of information is always helpful. Once again thanks!

I myself sold 23 cars last month and am looking to do the same this month.... Ya know what cracks me up is everyone says the economy sucks .... I beg to differ!

Snake, we sold ours for List Price. Every one of them presold before they got here or with an hour of coming off the truck. A competitor here in town put a $4K ADM on his. He gets the joy of seeing all four of them ever day. :D

The $6K is on top of the $26-27K so its around $33K. And I don't think it's a good price.

I agree with you. AT $28K the FFH strikes me as a great car. At $33K it's another story.

If you were a previous customer, no problem. If you are a new customer one of 2 things. The easiest and quickest is a credit application and check and backup finance contract. Secondly, we could accompany you to your bank and get a counter check.

Gott ya, I thought the market adjustment went the other way. A market adjustment upward, I would never go for that. Soon, they can start manufacturing them faster if the demand is still there. Wait until people start having problems with Hybrids or something better comes out, then we'll see which way the market adjustments go.

here is ct, real estate is definitely on the upswing.
some of the sales prices are higher than i thought they would be.
at the high school crew banquet, sat at a table with 4 other couples, 3 of which are in real estate related careers. they were all pretty upbeat.
there has been a lot of traffic related to people looking for homes in our neighborhood driving on our dead end street.
there are no homes for sale on my street.
when they get back down to my house they always slow down.
not sure if it is the house or all those nice fords on display. ;)

If I see a penny on the ground I pick it up. Can't help myself.

It must be our generation, I do the same thing. The generation before us, the ones that lived through the depression taught us that. I remember my father couldn’t walk by a phone both without sticking his finger in the change return to see what he’d find. If I was with him and he found a nickel/dime he’d give it to me and said, “save it for when the ice truck comes around” and I did. My mother just shook her head.

Fast forward to when I had two sons; he showed them the same thing. When we went on vacations to Atlantic City with my parents before it turned into a gambling town, my sons would race to the phone booths, and there were plenty of them, to see what they could find. ‘You know who’ loved my father but would watch in disbelief saying, “aren’t there worthwhile things he can teach those kids, do they have to act like beggars”?

Fast forward again to the next generation, Son #1 showed his sons what his Pap-Pap showed him with the phone booths. When we were on vacation with Son #1 last summer, my oldest grand son (6 at the time) said, “hey dad there’s one of those things that might have some money in it, let’s go see”. ‘You know who’, said “ah no, not another generation”. :( I said, “don’t worry those phone booths will be a thing of the past in a few years so essentially that will have stopped with your kids generation.

Oh well, it was fun while it lasted. :)

Fords in Connecticut? Is that legal? I thought that the official state car of CT was the E-class Mercedes. I see a million of them whenever I drive through the Nutmeg State. (Maybe that's just a Fairfield County thing.)

Yeah, the local real estate people here on LI are saying the same thing. While I'm happy to hear it, I've also read that this might be the proverbial dead cat bounce - that we haven't hit bottom yet. Many adjustable-rate loans will reset this year for the 1st time, & that might trigger another wave of defaults.

Well.....as tidester said, if you use the "contact" info to send to dealers for quotes here at Edmunds, you have to give personal info, as well as the vehicle you're interested in for you to get quotes.

I wouldn't think it should be a shock that the dealerships who received that info wouldn't tell you.

This goes back about 35 years but the most extreme case I ever saw was in Oklahoma City. I was pulling into a golf course (Lake Hefner) and waiting for a guy in a new Mercedes ( yes, they made Mercedes back then) to back out so I could pull into his space. He suddenly stopped his car, got out, walked behind his car and picked up a golf tee. Jumped back in and took off. Just something I will never forget.

Good point, not to mention the Aspen, Firenzas (2 different types but both losers), early Rabbits, Hyundai Pony, Pinto, Chevette, Pacer, Yugo, Aztek, Vega, most Fiats.

Somehow, the image does remain of those old clunkers, and I think of my 63 Comet, 3 on the tree, when I see a Ford. By the way, that new Taurus looks pretty good too, but a name like Crown Vic or Starliner :shades: might make for better memories.

driver....funny....just this weekend I saw both a chevette and a vega pull into Costco at the same time. Male was in the Vega. Female was in the Chevette. For their age (the cars, and the couple), they were in surprisingly decent shape.

Not what I'd consider anything remotely near collectibles (both the cars, and the couple). But, unless the cars were bought with the loose change we pick up off the ground, I don't think I'd invest much in either car (or the couple). :P

1973 I bought my first "new" car, a racing green Maverick with a 302 V8. My co-worker came to work about a week later with an orange Vega with white racing stripes.......made my Maverick look pretty lame. However, I did have a lot fewer problems with the Maverick, and the V8 in that little car (little at that time) could really go. But, the Vega looked good, until it fell apart.

My dad used to own a little grocery store. We got to deal with all those deposit bottles.... At 4 I was working in the store doing things like that and stocking shelves. I might get a Coke out of it...

I managed my share of penny candy for sure. When I was real little we had a store two blocks from the house that mostly sold bait and tackle and such but had a candy counter that we made good use of. Amazingly, as it was about to go out of business and apparently there was much talk amongst the adults that the best thing that could happen for the guy was for it to burn down it did. Amazing coincidence.

Where I grew up the small local grocery store didn't sell penny candy and the other store (further away) did but didn't sell soft drinks. So we took the bottles to the one store to get the deposit money and then went to the penny candy store with our booty.

Funny thing is me and my sister drove through the old neighborhood two weekends ago. The penny candy store is long gone. Strange the neighborhood looked so different but looked so much the same.
