I have a 2005 Ram 1500 4X4 that I purchased new. The vehicle currently has about 85,000 miles on it. I have not had any major trouble with anything other than having to replace the EGR valve just after the warranty expired. My current problem is that I have noticed the tranny is slipping when it is cold and I first start it up. I put it in D or R and it takes a few minutes before it starts to move. The tranny fluid is full and clean. I am not quite sure where to start since this is the first tranny issue I have had to deal with on a newer vehicle. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

take ur vehicle to a local trans shop that does free road test and diagnosis have it scanned for specifically governer pressure sensor and governer pressure solenoid operation this is a typical problem with this transmission
  • ram05ram05 Member Posts: 2
If the diagnostic determines a problem with the governor pressure solenoid or pressure sensor, is this a big job to replace these components? Are the components internal/external and roughly how costly? Thanks for the feedback.

parts will run 225 or roundabout there the labor you can do on your own pretty much refer to my personal carspace page you will find a picture of a 46RE valvebody there showing the gov pres sens and solenoid

I have an 01 ram 1500 4x4 and when the truck is cold it won't shift correctly.it seems to not want to shift down.i can floor the truck and it barely moves.if i manually shift it to first it takes off fine.when it warms up it seems to go away for a while.but if i'm driving for an hour or so it starts to give me the same problem only manually shifting makes no difference.also at this time when i stop, sometimes it won't shift out of 1st gear until i get on the gas petal.should i rip it out and blow it up?

I have an 05 Dodge quad cab 2wd, and sometimes when I start my truck and it hasn't been driven in a few hours or over night, I put it in drive and the RPMS rise and it just barely moves, then it acts like normal a couple of moments later, and drives fine after that. It only happens on start up when the motor is cold and not every time. Has anyone had this problem and what was the fix? I have an appointment on Tuesday for the dealership to look at it, but I just wanted to have an idea before they tell me nothing is wrong with it.

There's a TSB out for faulty tranny filters. My guess is you have one that is faulty. The dealer should remedy this for free. TSB 21-015-05. Do a search or press your dealer. Good luck!

Hi all, I'm a newbie on the forum, although I will admit I have been lurking about for awhile. For a time I had been having issues with the tranny slipping when I would take a left hand turn and/or put the truck in any other position/maneuver that caused the fluid to run more to the right side of the pan.

I pulled the pan off of the tranny on my '99 Cummins powered 4x4 the other day. I found the normal dirt in the bottom and cleaned the pan and magnet. When I removed the filter I found the gasket between the filter and the pump intake was partially cracked out and allowing the pump to suck air part of the time. (It almost looked like RTV silicone instead of a gasket) I also adjusted the bands while I had the pan off. After the work was completed I refilled it with ATF+4. I have had no problems in the 200 miles since this was completed. I'm hoping that anyone else that may be suffering similar issues will read this and get some value from it...

My check engine light came on a few days ago. Checked the code and it came back P1762, the definition says shift solenoid C stuck on. I checked online and on www.CanOBD2.com and it says Governor Pressure Sensor Offset. I am not sure how to proceed, any suggestions? I noticed it was starting in second gear when the light first came on, now it won't shift until i am almost at 4k rpms. I would take it to the dealer but last couple of times they have really not impressed.

Dodge truck will not shift into 4th(OD). Is there any easy parts to change before taking to dealer? took it in and 500 later still does not shift into 4th. Need to see if i can change some simple parts or check out something like relay or fuse .. Lite comes on when OD button is pushed. but it is already in 3rd.. HELP...

I have a 2001 dodge ram 2500 5.9 V8 auto. while driving the other day the OD off light came on and it dropped itself out of ovrdrive then a short while later the hot trans light came on. A quick code check revealed P1740 ( TCC/Overdrive solenoid). I did a fluid/filter change and reset the computer. Now driving today the OD light came on and then the hot trans but no code... just a note...With the fluid change I put in as much fluid as I took out and the dipstick shows good fluid/good level when hot and in neutral.
  • fordfan_17fordfan_17 Member Posts: 175
do you have oversized tires on this truck.. if you answer yes then the pcm must be calibrated to match your tire size....rucks pcm will still try to shift the trans like it has oem tires on it causing it to shift early and generating more heat than normal ... usually a pcm recalibration to the correct tire size will fix the overheat problem

I have a '98 that had the same problem. Read about all kinds of possible problems and solutions including linkage adjustment, filter/fluid replacement and taking it to a transmission specialist for an evaluation and possibly partial or total rebuild.
The shop I called wanted me to check the codes prior to bringing it in. As I had just done starter work (another weakness, the starter contacts are undersized but kits are available) and had the batteries disconnected I had to drive it for several warm up - cool down cycles.
The truck never set any codes. Then I read somewhere about checking the transmission relay in the fuse/relay box in the engine well. I swapped the transmission relay with the a/c relay (a/c needs work too) and the truck hasn't missed a shift but I've only driven it one day. I'm hoping this has fixed the problem but won't believe it until I drive it for a few weeks with no problem.

This is a cheap check, maybe it'll solve your problem, maybe it won't.
    good luck.

Have a '98 2500 that leaks fluid from the steering gear.
Not familiar with this truck or Dodge's methods.
The Hayne's manual has no information on repairing/rebuilding the steering gear. Could this be a 'simple' seal or is this box more complex?
Any suggestions appreciated, also any links to any parts diagram for the box would be appreciated.
Except for the leak the steering is fine.

Bought the truck brand new in 02. The truck was taken to the dealer and transmission replaced under warranty in 05 at 58K. Now it is doing the same thing. Was told I'm out of warranty now since I'm at 113K, even though there is only about 60K on the second transmission. I rarely pull anything and stick to 5 mph under the speed limit (to save fuel) on the highway.
I have to accelerate to the high side of first gear, then back off on the throttle to get the transmission to shift into second gear. Once it makes it to second, it usually shifts into third okay. I took it to the craft shop on post and cleaned the battery terminals, retorqued the bands, changed filter, and fluid, but it didn't help. Not wanting to take it back to the same dealer. What next? Thanks for any help.
Overall, I really like my truck and I don't want to move up to the newer year model designs. Just need the tranny working well.

i have a 98 ram 2500 with the 12v mechanical cummins. one day on the way home from work the trans kicked out of od like i turned it off but i never touched the button. then i came to a complete stop at a 4way and when i went to take off it wouldnt move. i shifted it through all the gears but it did nothin like i was always in nuetral. i checked it with a basic scan tool got a shift selenoid code but wasnt sure if that was causin my problem or if the internals are shot.

How did the trip to the shop go? I have the same problem and I am not sure what to do.

I have the following problem with my Dodge Ram 2500. I'll be running down the road between 50 and 70 MPH and the truck feels like it is down shifting, the RPM's kick up and it feels like I am having to push the pedal down more to maintain my speed. Prior to this happening I was having problems with my cruise control kicking off or intermittently working. I played with the fuse and it worked a bit but went back to the same until it finally quick working all together. I really don't feel it had anything to do with the fuse. I have changed the transmission fluid and filter and I ensured that I put the proper fluid in. At least I paid a lot for it. Was just wondering if this could be a sensor problem, an adjustment problem or am I doomed to the dreaded TRANSMISSION OVERHAUL? I would also note that I purchased the truck about a year ago and it ran fine for the first 4 to 6 months. When I changed the fluid and filter, it did look fairly clean and did not smell burnt. There were a couple of very tiny metal slivers that you had to really concentrate on to see but nothing out of the ordinary that I haven't seen on other transmissions fluid/filter changes on other vehicles. Thanks for any advice you may have.

I have a '03 3500 with the Cummins and the 4 spd auto with 104k problem free miles. Well, until now. If I drive easy on the throttle the truck will accelerate normally through all the gears up to whatever I want, 80+mph. However, if I put my foot into it, it bogs down, almost like I'm pushing the brake as hard as the accelerator. If I ease up, it accelerates normally as if nothing is wrong. I tried looking for codes from odometer by turning key to "On" 3 times then it says "done". Leads me to believe I just cleared the codes rather than viewing them. Any help on getting code info would be a great start and insight into the main problem would be a bonus.
  • titanium29titanium29 Member Posts: 38
That doesn't clear the codes. The "done" just means it has finished displaying any stored codes. So, if you didn't get any before the "done", no codes to worry about. As to the other, I'm not a mechanic, but the "obvious" to me sounds like one of three items - clogged/bad fuel filter, bad fuel pump, or bad fuel sending unit. Sure sounds like it is being fuel starved somehow on heavy accelleration. Good luck.

At first they told me that is wasn't a warranty issue, then after I complain, he searched more and told me that it was under warranty, but it has a $100.00 deductible and he would give me 10% off to make it $90.00. Total Bullsh*t. They have a problem and it is under the 70,000 miles and they won't cover 100%.

I have the same problem with my 2007 Dodge Ram 1500 SLT. It pops out of reverse every so often. I took it to Bettenhausen Dodge in Tinley Park, IL and they replaced the Range Sensor and it worked ok for a couple weeks but now it starting to do the same problem again. When I took it to the dealer they said that the problem didn't throw any codes so they couldn't exactly tell what was the cause. I have another appointment at Dodge.

Does anyone have a solution to the 2007 Dodge Ram popping out of reverse? PLEASE HELP?????????

    Mr. C.

I have a 2006 Ram 1500 with the 5.7 Hemi. If mine sits overnight and or it is cool out and it sits for more that a few hours the transmission is slow to respond going into reverse. Been doing that since day one. The Dodge dealer showed me a Service Bulletin saying that the fluid drains out of the torque converter when it sits for a long time and especially when it's cold out. Nothing to worry about they told me. I made them give me a piece of paper noting that I complained about it and if I had problems after the warranty was up that I would have it fixed under warranty conditions. We'll see.
  • jmdulayjmdulay Member Posts: 2
No. But I have the exact same problem with my 89 250 p/u. I read an article in a transmission book that said any trans shift point can be adjusted by changing the linkage length or screwing in the vacuum modulator. I can't figure out either one. Can anyone else help?
  • junestunesjunestunes Member Posts: 1
hey, my truck has been running fine and the other day my tranny started slipping on the way home. when i got it home it wouldn't make it up the drive way. i can cut off the truck and let it sit a while. start it up and it will go right in gear (almost like it just has to cool off). but it will only go about a block down the road and it will die off like it goes in neutral. the hasn't been any grinding at all just a little whining. is my tranny gone or what?dodge 1994 ram 1500 a518 trans.could it be something small? sensor etc? or maybe torque converter? please help.
  • jmdulayjmdulay Member Posts: 2
I solved my own problem. I guess the rod that I assumed was the kick down rod also controls the shift point. I finally undid the bolt and slid the rod just 5/16 of an inch and now it goes into 2nd at 9 mph instead of 25 mph! Thanks anyway.

Cleaned all conections still having problem any suggestions?
  • fordfan_17fordfan_17 Member Posts: 175
block the wheels and climb under the truck and see if the wrecker driver disconnected the linkage to get the truck out of gear so he could repo it. should be a cable disconnected on the drivers side of the transmission
  • ricky16ricky16 Member Posts: 10
trans has a tight spot in low gear, run up to about 2 grand and shifts good, but stay below and shifts hard ,when cold shifts good but after it warms up it get the tight spot in accelator
  • blk37blk37 Member Posts: 3
thanks fordfan for the quick response, however the linkage is in tact what else could it be?
  • johnwayne1johnwayne1 Member Posts: 3
Take the linkage off and see if you can grab the shift arm on the trans and put it in park by hand if so you need to adjust you linkage cable. That and does the truck drive ok when in gear?
  • efxstsefxsts Member Posts: 2
Hope this one is easy! When stopping at a light feels like the torque converter doesn't disengage. RPM's drop feels like truck is going to stall because its still
trying to move, does the same thing is reverse. I've been shifting into neutral when I'm coming into a light or stop. Any Ideas?

I am getting the same code 1756. I hope someone can help out situations. I'll also note that I am getting a " small bucking" feeling as I come to a complete stop and have noticed my truck idling fast for a few seconds upon startup once in awhile. Its a '04 diesel. Thanks in advance, casey.

    Hello fellow dodge enthusiast,

I have a shift problem with my 99 3/4 dodge 4x4 diesel truck. the truck runs and shifts fine except when running about 40 mph with light pedal pressure the truck cant seem to decide which gear it want to be in. If you accelerate or take you foot of the pedal completely it work fine.
Also I would like to change out the servo valves in the transmission and dont know which transmission i have and where is the best place to get the parts.
The truck has an external trans cooler that was installed by the factory and was wondering if it will still have the check valve at the cooler which will nice to remove if needed.
Thanks, will all y'all help in advance and hope the best with your Dodge Truck experiences. I have had some problems with mine but, overall I still like the truck.

    Thanks Again,
    Gokart66

    Hello,
I have a '97 3500 Ram diesel with 140,000 miles under its belt. My truck resently decided not to downshift into 1st gear at a standstill or at minimal speeds. This doesn't happen every time, but close to 50 percent of the time and is gradually getting worse. All other gears are shifting smooth and within their RPM range. When the truck does shift down into 1st gear there seems to be a hint of movement or buck from the back right after you stop. Has anyone has this problem or has any insight on the situation?
    Thanks, Geetmonkey

Yes, I'm having the same EXACT problem with my '04 2500 cummins with 94,000 mi. on it! I have traced it down to a bad governor pressure control solenoid and the related sensor that controls the solenoid. I've been told they are known to be troublesome and the dealer usually stocks these parts. $120 for the solenoid and $85 for the sensor. I'm going to replace them this weekend and I'll let you know how it goes. If anyone else can give us sudjestions or if this is not our problem please, let us know. Cheers, Casey

i have a 97 2500, the tranny is slow between 1st and 2nd, it slips then drops right into 2nd gear and takes off. if your replacing the gpcs and the sensor let me know. i bought an aftermarket tranny from "tranzsparts" out of florida and it has been one problem after another. appreciate any info you have
  • dieselkcdieselkc Member Posts: 14
I'll definately let ya'll know how it goes. This solenoid is problematic on all dodge tranny's from 96 to 2006 model years ie. 512 and all of the "RE" series transmissions. No recall or free parts though, how shocking! :-)
