With all the toys we got on this car, we figured the warranty was worth having.
I used the MazdaUSA website to check the inventory of all the local dealers (and to find out which one had the colors and spec I wanted) and I asked through that website to get quoted on several cars from different dealerships to find out what they were willing to offer the CX-9 for - all were below MSRP, but some more than others - all of them said they would match other prices quoted by the other dealers.
OakTree Mazda (San Jose) => $6000 off MSRP
Capitol Mazda (San Jose - south) => $6100 MSRP

Good to know. Going for my first drive in the AM armed with info from Consumer Reports. BTW, anyone care to answer what is TTL and TTR? Did I spell those right? I keep seeing people here reference them.

Found a couple of CX-9's Grand Touring, tricked, under 10K miles, 2008 for under 30K. Being sold used. Carfax said they were "manufacturer's vehicles". I read back and forth on some other sites about how cars like this have been whipped like a rented mule. Others say its a bargain if they have extended warranty - which they do.
Any thoughts?

They sell genuine Mazda warranty. I have not committed to purchase one yet.
I will wait till 1 month before my OE warranty expires.
TTL means = Tax + Title fee + License fee
In CA, tax rate is based on where you live, not where you buy the vehicle.
A lot of those manufacturers' vehicles could be
- loaners
- test-drive vehicles
Just be aware of that when you buy them.
Bought at a So.Cal dealership:
2008 CX-9 Touring 2wd, White, Towing Package, Entertainment Package & Roof Rails. MSRP=$35,785.
I negotiated a base price of $30,300 and they worked the numbers so the $3000 rebate was not taxed. Total OTD was $32,807 (7.75% to uncle sam). Like I said, not the best price here, but the exact car we wanted and $5,500 off of sticker isn't too shabby in my book.

I'm curious if people think this is a good deal or if there is evidence I can do better.
The car is a 2008 CX9 GT AWD fully loaded. MSRP is $43,412 and dealer invoice is $39,025. They tell me on a lease the best they can do is sell it for dealer invoice less a Mazda rebate of $1,125 off of dealer invoice for a selling price of $37,900 plus 3.2% VA tax, $48 tags, $349 titling, and $595 acquisition fee. Money factor is 0.00148 and the residual is 54%. This is for 3 years and 10,500 miles. The monthly payment they quoted was $585. No security deposit. The math does not exactly work out based on the above (it comes to $579.80 when I do the numbers), but they pay personal property tax each year for us.
If SUVs aren't selling will dealership sell at a loss? Is it possible to get a better deal? Thanks for any and all feedback!

I have a dealer telling me 3K below invoice is as low as he can go.
But I read stuff here saying 6k is more like it.
Its all over the map.

Yeah they are selling SO bad new that they are discounting close to the price of a 1 year old used book. And real value 1 year old ones I hear are impossible to sell at book. A lot of people will be upside down on their loans if they sell for so little.

That says it all, I think. Usually for CX9, the difference between MSRP and INVOICE is about $3-4k. So, I believe
$6000 off MSRP or $3000 off invoice are decent price to start negotiating.
I then went to the dealer I liked best/had the spec I wanted and even got most of them to say they would match the other dealers offers.
If you are near Hayward Mazda then it would be worth trying their internet department - I got a really good deal through them. Mind you I bought the car and went for money off in lieu of their low Mazda finance deal.
First. Rave reviews for the vehicle. Quiet and smooth as silk ride, but plenty of power when we want to play. See, we started out our new car buying shop this time test driving Jaguar S-Types and Caddy STS' so we were looking for something fun to drive (Zoom Zoom). But cramming our 8 year old into the back of one of those for long trips up and down the Eastern seaboard when he was used to us renting Lincoln Towncars and Caddys....it was going to be tough in those smaller(faster) cars. Add to that he upchucked in the back of our Civic on an extended trip last week - too cramped and too bumpy. So we stumbled onto the CX-9...and Eric.
He was great. Lots of energy and enthusiam for his product. All of it backed up by knowlege. See...we knew nothing about Mazda. Never looked at one. Know no one that drives one. (We have a hugely successful Honda and Nissan dealership in town along with an old-school Caddy place that people love.) The Mazda dealership is about 30 min away so service is a bit of a hassle drive-wise. But I think we made a good decision. The deal? $6500 off MSRP, the option to buy extended warranty at dealer cost (according to consumer reports), ditto all the accessories at dealer cost. And even the option to buy EcoBlock leather protection + Resistall (a combo package) for the cost of 3 trips to the local detail shop. No pressure to "buy today" or anything. They advised we go do our research and get back to them on it.
Start price was $41,567
Less the $6500
Plus 3% sales tax + extra dealer profit (Doc Fee) of $289
I wrote a check out for $36351
Note: My sympathies for the people who live in states that hate people who do not drive rollerskates. There is no "We hate SUV owner" sales tax in NC. Remember to write your local politicos with your displeasure. Also, in NC the dealer has to label "Doc fee", "Prep fee" etc clearly as "Extra Dealer Profit".
And - like I said - the options to buy some other goodies.
For the folks hesitant to buy a dealer-added clearcoat...I would be too if it were $800-1200 that I keep reading about. But I'm lazy. Hate waxing and am willing to see what they can do for $295 - that's leather protection AND paint protection. And I've already found people on the net who collected on the paint protection when a Resistall tech came out and cleaned off overspray from a moronic neighbor's painting adventure.
Sadly they couldn't give me much on my old 1999 CRV trade-in, but it's easy enough to sell that locally for cash and still make between 4-5K on it. So this will eventually work out: The New-Uber-loaded (Eric called it the "Mack-Daddy" and he was right) new CX-9 is going to cost me $31-32K. If you live anywhere near S. Pines N.C. give Bill Smith Mazda a shout. I got to meet the owner and he's as nice as they come. If you want to buy a car from friendly home-town people that know their stuff, are willing to deal and make you feel welcome in the process.....them's the folks.

Can anybody enlighten me about a difference between Touring and Grand Touring besides 20-inch wheels. I spent about 2 hours crawling the web and trying to figure it out. Mazda web site mixes standard features and options, so it's not informative.
Also, I can't seem to find the price for blind-spot monitoring option on Edmunds. Anyone knows what is the price for such option?

Here is how I got the deal . I took the $4000 rebate intead of 1.9 and found my own Financing. the rate I found was 4.9 working the numbers my payment was 4 dollars more a month. Using my Financing . I was back and forth between Manhattan and Wantagh mazda they were willing to negotiate the most. Wantagh was awesome, I am really happy with them !!! I pick up my car tonight.
i have a deal on the table at 34,300 gt-awd, assist package, towing, entertainment, wheel lock, blind spot msrp 41,740 with 7,716 off for a sales price of 34,024.
(1) There was a small dent on the driver's side door near the handle.
(2) There were scratches on the hood.
(3) A small 'smudge' near the driver's side side view mirror - difficult to describe but seems like the paint is worn in that spot.
(4) The center console was not put back, the faux wood paneling was hanging off.
What should I do? Please advise.
The service center was closed this evening so they took down the issues and will tell them first thing in the morning and have them call me.
Obviously get all 4 items fixed. Do you know if these are 'easily' fixed problems? I think the dent can come out. But the scratches and smudge I'm worried about because of how it might leave the paint finish. Any advice will be appreciated.
After that, I think I should ask for some other things to compensate for the damage, and stress, and just the fact that I just bought a ~$40k car 1.5wks ago, and now there's damage done to it!!!! Free service?? Can't think of anything else, I'm sure all of you out there will have some ideas!! My highlander of 5 years doesn't even have a scratch or a dent!!!

Seems like it was a pretty good deal, though if they keep going down like this, it might not look so good in a couple months.

what should be the right MSRP for GT AWD with moonroof?

While it is not on Mazda's web site... the additional 4K off is in place of the 0% 36 financing option. So if you can pay cash, go for it.
The MSRP was $38.345.00, I got it for $27,982. What do you guys think?

So effectively the TRUE invoice is now $31539. Expect great deals at the end of model year.
I'd take their [non-permissible content removed] back to school, or find another dealer willing to "deal".
Right now, the bottom line is nearly $10,000 off of MSRP. Believe me, I know this the hard way.
Your price would be a fair price on an '09, but way too high for an '08 at model close.
It may be worth taking the money and arranging for financing outside of Mazda.

I am in the market for a SUV with 7 seats, i am still deciding between a Acura MDX and this vehicle.
I was getting quotes for an ACURA MDX with sport package for 38 K
Where as this CX-9 , i best i could get was 32K ( with the navigation and moonroof packages ) .
Is it worth it for going for CX-9 for a 6k difference ?
I found that the Cx-9 depreciates a lot faster than the MDX
The CX-9 won me due to a) the price and b) the sum of all features you are getting for the price. Comparing the GT package I got (see here) and MDX Base I was after, the GT has practially everything the MDX base had. On the top of that, the CX-9 has much larger and more comfortable interior, especially in the third row seat area and cargo room, and much quieter ride while still being very responsive. And look at those beautiful 20" wheels...
If you are unsure, test-drive both and see what you like more.
Picked up an '08 GT AWD, 23 miles, GT assist, tow package, blind spot monitor, moonroof/Bose. Sticker was $40,290 and they agreed to $33,290 on a cash deal, and added surprisingly fair valuation of a ~$5k trade-in. I'm sure even better deals can be struck, especially if the car you're interested in is on the dealer's lot. In my case, they retrieved our car from another bay area dealer... I could've gone to the other dealership and dealt with them instead, but our "neighborhood" dealer's sales staff had spent their time and effort with me and they will also be our service site. It does look like the mazda.com "inventory search" is quite accurate, that's for sure.
One note for other buyers: inspect the paint on these cars carefully; many have been on the lot for the entire summer and have been poorly washed/dried MANY times. Expect to see water spots on the darker color paints... etched water spots can be almost impossible to remove, even with a clay bar or mechanical polishing by a detailer. This is a valid negotiation point to use in your deal.

note: according to my understanding (take MDX as an example)... After all, hitch added 30lb of dead weight if one does not need it.
