I pay for roadside assistance is in my USAA insurance policy. $6 a month (Pretty much what juice quoted.)

I agree on the piece of mind idea. I had my sister and sister-in-law get it. They're single ladies and I think piece of mind is worth it. For me, I can't see it though. The part of the warranty I hate - Fan breaks and a blade goes through your radiator - Fan is covered, radiator is not. Which is going to cost more? Sure, it's not likely, but neither is my Honda breaking down.

I personally wouldn't buy one either. But, I'm still not willing to say someone else shouldn't. I was considering it for my current Honda, but then looked back at the one before, to decide how I would have fared. I totaled the car at 59K miles (not a typical situation, I know) and at 42 months old. My total out of warranty repair bills on the car (23K miles out of warranty) were $11.00. That pretty much made up my mind on purchasing the extended warranty. I haven't had $1000.00 of out of warranty work repairs that would have been covered on an extended warranty, on all seven of the Hondas I've owned total.

Any idea when the 2004 CRV will make its debut?

I believe the 2004 model will be the 3rd production year for this design. I expect Honda will make some changes. If any one has insight into the 2004, I would appreciate some feedback.

Don't new models usually show up around September? I know their inventory sale ends September 2nd so, I guess around then.

It was actually 7/75, so 7 years instead of 3. That more than doubles the 3/36 warranty. If you drive a lot of miles, you're still getting the warranty extended for 39000 miles. Either way, more than double.

My cousin was quoted $875 at the time for a 7/100 warranty. Her mileage isn't high, so 7/75 was better for her.

kyfdx: you've been lucky if that's all you spent. We spent $2500 or so on our 626 in years 5-7 of ownership, and it's rated highly in reliability. Think about this - that one car's repair bills would pay for 4 Honda warranties!

I think if something breaks and it causes another part to break, the warranty would cover both. It is bumper to bumper, zero deductible.

I saw an FP Civic coupe at Ourisman Honda when I test drove the Pilot. The total price was obscene (mid 20s IIRC) but it did look very nice, plus it carries a factory warranty.

juice, I'm not sure about the one thing breaking another and it's covered statement. I was told that if a fan blade flew through my hood (again, unlikely) due to a bad fan, the fan is covered, the hood is not.

A guy is selling a 98 CR-v EX AT with 67000miles for 11K. The car comes with 7/100 warranty, so there are 2/33 left. He was the second owner and bought the car last year throught the honda certified program. I would like to bargain a little bit, but the price is pretty much firm. Also I don't think the 60,000 has been done yet.
What do you guys think? Sorry for borthering again.

I'm assuming that 7/100 is an extended warranty? Make sure it can be transferred - most extended warranties are really insurance policies and the owner usually can cancel them and get some of their cost back.

The used car market is in a "glut" situation right now, so I'd bargain hard. Check with the dealers over in Real-World Trade-In Values for a cross-reference to our own True Market Value pricing.

Can some owners hop in with a miles per gallon estimate, and more pricing suggestions?

The owner told me it's a Honda Care Warranty. Is it tranferrable? What kind of document should I check with him? As of the price, he is pretty firm. I used the Edmund tool and find the private party price is around 10K. Is that a right estimation in California? Another thing is I am wondering if this car has a timing chain or timing belt, which is a pretty expensive item to replace. Thanks, Steve.

Well, at least one automotive website thinks that the '97-'01 CR-Vs are good used-car values.

Anyway, you'll find a timing belt under the hood, which should be replaced at the 105k-mi/7-yr point. The X-factor, as always, is how well the car has been cared for. Assuming that maintenance is being kept up, 200,000+ miles on the odometer is very possible.

Realistically, you can expect highway mpg's in the mid-20s. (I also think our Host is right in that it's a buyers market out there.)

I think the price is kinda high. Those came out in 1997, so they are 6 years old. Mileage is about average for the age, and they skipped the 60k service (which includes other stuff besides the timing belt). So I would assume it has *not* been well taken care of. It's not the original owner, either. IMO it's not worth more than half what it cost new, no way.

The leftover portion of the warranty probably adds $400 of value, but I still think it should sell for under $10k. Real World Trade-in values is the place to check. I bet a dealer would offer him $8k tops on a trade-in.

The Hondacare warranty is transferable.. I believe there is a $100 fee. I would check the in-service date on the car. 1998 might only have 18 months left on warranty. A 60,000 service will be anwhere from $350-600 at the dealer. He may say the price is firm, and it doesn't sound like a bad price, and the warranty helps, but I would use the costs listed above, and try to at least bargain that much off the price.
I can't speak for how the car might hold up going forward, but I put 59,000 miles on my '98 CRV and only spent $11.00 for out of warranty repairs. The only problem I can think of, if that they are exceptionally slow. Not dangerously so, but you have to get used to it.

I don't think the '98 came out in 1997.. Because the '99 didn't come out until January of 1999. But, I bought my '98 in August of 1998, so I might be off. The timing belt isn't due at the 60,000 mile service, but I agree that the fact the 60K service isn't done by 67,000 miles is worrisome. As I said above, I'd want to know the in-service date, so I knew if I had 24-28 months of warranty, or possibly 18 or less.. The fact it has the extended warranty would make me feel better, though. No reason not to have problems fixed.

I don't know what they bring in your area, but they get stupid money for CRVs around here. I personally don't see the value in that old of a car for that money, but in comparison to what they are selling for around here, it seems fair.

It's not the actual cost of the 60k service, it's the fact that they skipped it. What else did they skip? Oil changes? Tire rotations?

I would at least get receipts to make sure they changed the oil twice a year. But really that's the kind of car I'd avoid alltogether. They obviously cut corners on maintenance.

CarMax offers them cheaper than that here in the DC area, and their prices are on the high side.

New crash test results and fatality statistics are out.

Fatalities in rollover crashes accounted for 82 percent of the total fatality increase in 2002. In 2002, 10,666 people died in rollover crashes, up 5 percent from 10,157 in 2001. The number of persons killed in sport utility vehicles (SUVs) that rolled over rose 14 percent. Sixty-one percent of all SUV fatalities involved rollovers.

Just got my new CRV. Love the car! Looking to get a cargo tray on the internet. The last tray I had for my Subaru was hard plastic and things had a tendency of sliding around. Anybody find a rubberized tray for the CRV they would recommend? Also any advice on other useful accessories would be appreciated.

Actually Subaru offers both. My Forester has a plastic liner, but our Legacy has a heavier, rubberized one. The rubber one is sturdier and does not slide around, so you're looking for the right product.

I testdrove the 98 CR-V and decided to pass it.
The ride if terrible as far as noise is concerned. There are a few rattles as well. Thank all you guys for your inputs. Sign, have to keep looking.

johnnyrf - you may already know this but thought I'd mention it just in case. At Honda Accessories, there is a "heavy-gauge durable rubber cargo mat with a ribbed design that prevents cargo from sliding" available for 1997-2001 CR-Vs. Without looking up figures for car widths, how short in width would this mat be compared to the width of your new car?

Went today to get my roof rack installed as part of the deal we got and asked the service man about oil changes and he said they recommend 3,750 miles even though the manual says 5,000 for severe conditions. Which is it 3,750 or 5,000. Also, at what mileage do you all get your transmission serviced. On past vehicles I have had it serviced around 30,000.

scottdude, I bought a 1999 CR-V a couple of months ago and got quite a shock when I drove it at night the very first time. Unless Honda has changed the colour for more recent models, I hope you like orange. Normally, I like the colour orange but thought it looked "cheap" in my vehicle!

It's much like that, not identical. They've changed it a bit but, that's it. It's not really a hard plastic, it's a rubbery plastic. Kind of like a cross between a garbage can and a tire. My wife really loves having it. We bought flowers yesterday and it was nice to not have dirt all over.

5000 miles. 3750 is overkill. Actually, I'm usually closer to 6000. I use a synthetic blend. Anyone find fully synthetic 5w-20 yet? Other than Amsoil (too much $$$ IMO).

I also change at 5K.. A lot of Honda dealers are having a hard time adjusting off the 7500 mile service interval to the new 10000 mile interval. This should change gradually, as the new Accords also have the new intervals.. I drive about 15K per year, and its nice going in every 4 months, rather than every 3 months.

Car owners have to be familiar with their owners manual. I would go with the recommended 5K/6mo oil change schedule. My brother-in-law was told that at 30K he needed a plug change and valve adjust on his 2002 CRV EX. Cost of the service was to be around 350 bucks! I dont see these items on the 30K maint. schedule published by honda, as a matter of fact cant find valve adjusts.

Well... It's required if they are in fact out of adjustment. While a CR-V should not require adjustment earlier than 105K miles, it isn't a bad idea to have them looked at sooner.

I've read posts by some owner who suggest that you have the valves checked after the vehicle is broken in. Apparently that is the most likely time for them to slip out of spec. After that, they should be good for a long time. Take it for what it's worth.

I fell in love with the previous model, which was definitely boxier and had a much higher cuteness quotient. The re-design wasn't a deal breaker, but I was sorry to see Honda move away from the other look.

When parked next to the old model the difference really shows. While not exactly v**-like, the longer body, new rear window shape, and more streamlined appearance are definitely headed in the v** direction. Or maybe it's because I got the Chianti Red.

Here's hoping Honda come to their senses and send it back in the other direction with the next re-design, but I doubt it. The new shape is probably why I've been able to carry all sorts of odd-sized cargo. Life is full of tradeoffs.

I agree with mam9's comments about the "new" look, I also preferred the more SUV looking earlier version....I have however gotten over this and have made the decision to purchase an '03 EX as it appears to provide the best combination of cost, utility & economy to suit my needs, while not totally offending my male sensibilities........

I am thinking about purchasing a 03 or 04 Honda CR-V and was wondering about the Body Side Cladding option. Does this do a good job in protecting the body from road grime, rock chips and rust? Or are there problems with water getting behind it and causing rust? I live where there is a lot of snow, slush and ice melt sprayed on the roads. Also, does anyone know if there will be any changes in the 04 CR-V worth waiting for? Costs going up? Thanks

Have it cleaned and waxed before you have the cladding installed.

I imagine it'll protect more than it will harm. Grand Cherokees have used cladding for a decade, and those don't tend to rust. Galvanized steel is wonderful, no? :-)
