That's certainly a real possibility. If you look at not only the last CR-V, but the new Oddyssey, the Acura RL, the addition of the Type S to the TL line, the SR-V for the 4th generation Prelude, etc. A mid-generation power boost is good sales booster.

How are you guys calculating the invoice on the LX?! Gross profit margin is expressed as a % of the selling price.

We were talking about profit margin which is calculated relative to costs (invoice). For gross profit margin, you are correct: the base is (often) the retail price.

Rest assured, Canadians and Americans do accounting exactly the same way! :-)

Diploid - The CR-V had the engine revised in its third year of production. It was available in '96 in the JDM market. Then Honda brought it to the rest of the world in '97. The HP boost happened in '99. I think Slugline has a complete history of CR-V changes. Maybe he'll post the link for us.

I'm sure that Honda could get another 20-30 HP out of the 2.4, but can they do it without sacrificing emissions, fuel efficiency, and NVH? Maybe, but then what will then do in three years when it's time for a mid-model upgrade? Design a whole new engine? I doubt it. Remember this block was designed as a 2.0 and has already been tweaked. Those 2.0 engines with 200+ HP also have 8000+ rpm red lines. If we go with the sort of technology, we're back to having no low end torque.

Candatwo - If you are looking to get "bang for your buck" then you should avoid SUVs all together. The price comparisons between sedans and SUVs are consistent with every manufacturer.

to a certain degree. I think if the V is an Accord-based 'ute, then it would be expected, and acceptable, that it would be comparatively more expensive. However, the V is based on the Civic's economy car platform, with a 4-banger as the only engine choice, and with decidedly very pedestrian appointments. And then when Honda prices it above the Accord, that's the tough part to justify.

You obviously haven't seen our previous Provincial government's Annual Budgets :))

The US and Canada count money the same way. Counting votes is where we differ. =)

Thanks for the enocouragement. Good way of looking at it. I'm going out there tomorrow and see what kind of deal I can get on my trade in. Wish me luck folks.

This is the page varmit was referencing:

    http://users.ev1.net/~aurelio/crv/facts

Assuming that the '99 models were introduced fall '98, the American consumer saw the horsepower bump happen in less than two years. You are now free to settle the rest of your bar bets, too. <GRIN>

Old salts (varmit, slugline) please bear with me...

I just made my way over to CRVIX (CR-V Information Xchange) for the first time. It's a really great site for people interested in the CR-V, not to mention owners.

There is the most comprehensive review I've seen on the 2002 CR-V on the site. Fine-tooth comb type stuff. Really nutrient dense and a must-read for all those intersted in the vehicle.

Although I've seen CRVIX referenced here, I don't recall a recent link. So here 'tis:

    http://www.hondasuv.com/

Scroll down to the bottom of the page to the 2002 CR-V First Impression Review.

I'll try to link it here:

    http://www.ptcruiserusa.com/hondasuv/crvix/library/2002review/library_2002review.htm

    Really great stuff!

Slugline - Thanks for the link. I bookmarked it this time.

I pointed out the JDM model year because the post I was referencing mentioned mid-model changes. Since we have the CR-V from the get-go this time, those changes will seem like they take longer.

Jim - Bing (author of said review) is a CR-V owner and the head honcho at the CR-V IX. As the primary moderator at the CR-V IX Forum, he's read most everyone's opinions over the past several years and was well prepared for that review. Unlike reviewers that work for magazines, Bing didn't have a limit on how much space he could use or what topics he could write about. If he were writing for C&D, he couldn't waste pages on stuff like the rear wiper nozzle or possible aftermarket equipment.

Carsdirect listed the 2002 CR-V a few days ago. They are offering straight MSRP. For the automatic EX, that's $22,740. This should at least provide some ammo for those encountering dealer markups.
  • thekingtheking Member Posts: 107
What is your opinion of optional cladding on 2002 CRV??? My only fear that if dealer does not put it on properly..it will begin to pull off!!!!
  • scnamescname Member Posts: 296
I saw one at dealers, the corner of door cladding already peeling off. Its nowhere near the quality of factory application.

Don't get the grill trim either, very ugly. Dealer reinstalled the bumper poorly, mismatched to the body.
  • michaelgmichaelg Member Posts: 3
    My wife & I bought a 2002 EX today.

We went to several dealers: 1 dealer had the nerve to say the price was MSRP + "AMV" (adjusted market value) of $2,000. We offered them $500 over invoice, but they wouldn't budge below sticker, so we walked.

Another dealer was about $100 under sticker.

Finally, we found a dealer that went $1,100 under sticker and we took the deal.

The car looks great & is a huge improvement over the 2001. Looking forward to bringing it home.

What other deals are people finding out there?
  • scnamescname Member Posts: 296
I got $500 over invoice on an EX a week ago, but no car so far as I turned down the demo with 64 miles. Am waiting for new shipment in 5 to 10 days but who knows.

I think you got a very good deal as most people here paid MSRP. Two paid $316 over invoice at an Oklahoma dealer but that's an exception.

Houston dealers have dozens of LX, but very few EX anywhere.
  • sluglineslugline Member Posts: 391
With virtually flat terrain and no snow, the 2WD LX is the CR-V of overwhelming choice down here. At first I thought I was imagining this, but then for a couple of weeks earlier this year, I decided to get some firm numbers. Whenever I saw another CR-V in traffic or in a parking lot, I would make note of its trim level. 2WD LX CR-Vs exceeded 80% of the observed sampling. Most of the rest were 4WD LXs. It seems that I am in a very small minority that opted for an EX or SE. Unless the in-dash CD changer or moonroof prove to be compelling draws, there probably isn't much incentive for Houston dealers to change their allocations for '02.

    Michael,
Where did you get your deal at? I spoke to 10 deals in my area (northern NJ/NY area) and none would budge below a few hundred off MSRP.
Beside OK, where else have people gotten deals? I have some frequent flier miles I wouldn't mind using if it was reasonable driving distance from NY/NJ area.
    Thanks.

Anyone know where I can get the invoice prices for accessories? Thanks.

Folks I am reposting a very good Lease deal for those of you that may have missed my earlier post. I got on the CRV 2002 LX AWD AUTO with 15,000 mi.

folks I didnt think I could work the price on these hot potatoes but I think I got a good deal...please all you sharp shooters tell me if this indeed was a good deal or not considering the fact that Honda Dealers are just not willing to discount this SUV a penny in most instances because of its hi demand

I leased it for 39 months thru Honda Bank of America, $320 tax included, NO Money down execpt for the first month's payment of $320 which leaves me with 38 more payments, no motor vehicle fees or plate fees either, no bank fees, nothing but the first month's payment down. Also 15,000 miles yr.

I love this car and think it looks a helluva lot nicer than the 2001. To sum it up for all those that may want to know how it drives. It drives just like a larger CIVIC.

    Only small gripes:

rear middle seat headrest seems to block a bit of the rear window view....can this be removed or lowered?

the 15 inch wheels and tires just look real skimpy on this size of an SUV
  • canadianclcanadiancl Member Posts: 1,078
Had another look at the V this weekend. On 2nd inspection, the dash looks better. HVAC knobs look and feel very high-class. The opening in the front wheelwell is a concern. When turning a corner and the front wheels are at a certain angle, water, mud, and whatever else would get shot up by the tires right into that opening. Wheel/tire combo looks smaller everytime I look at the car, especially the back ones because I think the rear wheelwell opening is bigger in the '02. If I squint, the wheel/tire almost looks like one of those space-saver spares. The tan cloth interior is horrible. I think the cloth in a regular Civic even looks better. Still can't figure out why Honda stuck the fuel door release way down under the hood release. It's an awkward reach to get to it. It's easier to reach from outside the car. Maybe in Japan they don't have full-service gas stations. Carpeting feels a tinsy bit more luxurious than the one in the old V.

Sunlvr - I dunno where you can accessories at invoice, but here are some popular on-line sites. Install of the OEM parts tends to be pretty easy. You can save a bundle by doing it yourself or with the help of a handy friend.

Thanks for the links varmit. I want to know the invoice price because my dealer said he'd give me accessories at cost (since he isn't giving me anything else as far as a deal goes). Want to know what cost is so I know if he is being honest.

I was pretty set to buy the EX at $300 under MSRP, but then when I hear about others getting good deals, I think I should keep searching, but I've contacted 10 dealers in my area so far. Not sure where to look next.

    1. It's a Honda
    2. Beefier than the last one
    3. More power
    4. Seems more comfortable

    Dislikes:
    1. Rear mounted spare. Don't back into anything! Where is the rear bumper on this thing?
    2. Wheel well openings up front. Gonna be a huge aftermarket in selling some covers for them!
    3. Small tires. not as bad as some people say, but still noticeable.
    4. A bit akward looking overall. Gonna take some getting used to. What's up with those huge roof rails?
    5. Complete lack of foot/leg space for the front passenger. Ridiculous actually. Would not buy it for this reason alone.
    6. Side step bars look silly
    7. RT AWD system. Not as stable as a Subaru on snow covered roads.
    8. Could not drive it. Seat belt issue. Sales guys tried BSing me at first but I let them know about the how it is all over the internet and they quickly shut up. They also said MSRP is not available yet. Again, I told them to look it up on the internet! Unbeleivable.

It will sell well just because it is a Honda.
I have owned several Hondas. Love them.
I can not love the new CRV though.

I have two hopes/dreams left in a small SUV:
    1. Nissan X-trail coming over here
    2. 2003 Forester (please be better looking)

Good job on your purchased of your 2002 CRV EX.
I hope the list price and over list price customers and dealers are still reading these posting. By my calculations you paid $21,317.00 plus state tax. Michaelg how close did I come to your price. I waiting for a dealer to sell it @ $250.00 over invoice. Your price took less than a month after introduction. I'm willing to wait till its gets down to my price.
Good Luck with your new CRV , I hope to be driving one soon too.
  • canadianclcanadiancl Member Posts: 1,078
I actually thought the front legroom was better than the old V. Speaking of the old V, the papers here are advertising some big discounts on the remaining '01. Since I have a '97, it would be silly for me to consider one, but for a potential new V owner, in view of the shortcomings on the '02, buying an '01 at a big discount may be an alternative worth considering. I know I would if I didn't have one already.

I just got my 2002 silver CRV on Friday. I was wondering if anyone else is concerned about the lack of front wheel wells? I just have the feeling that the wheel spray when it is raining will cause quite the mess up under the hood. Has anyone heard or seen an aftermarket wheel well insert? Or would trying to put in wheel wells cause more problems? Or...is this just me making and issue out of nothing? Your thoughts please.

I'm really happy with my new CRV It handles well, has tons more room than the 98 Civic I traded in had. At my first fill up (I was at 1/2 tank) I came up with 24.6 MPG. Based on my other Hondas this figure should get better as the engine gets broken in.
  • irastusirastus Member Posts: 5
This was quoted on the sticker as a "price adjustment." I laughed out loud. They had only 2 on the lot and both were sold. Hope they didn't pay that markup. One was a Mohave Mist EX. That color works well with the new CR-V, and even makes the beige interior look nicer. Still would like to see a Blue and Chianti Red.
  • eludwigeludwig Member Posts: 82
Something tells me Michaelg got that "AMV" BS at Honda of Bellevue in the Seattle area. Maybe not, but to any newcomers in the Puget Sound- stay away from these jerks. They had a $2,500 AMV on an Accord EX sedan 4-cyl 5-spd back in July '00. When challenged they said- "it's a black 5-speed, which is very, very rare".

Honda of Kirkland is much better.

I live in Orange county, NY. I take it irastus you meant Orange county, CA?

Does anyone here know what the CRV pricing is like here in the lower Hudson valley? I checked with a few dealers and one hasn't returned my price quote yet and the other doesn't have any left so wouldn't quote a price. Wouldn't surprise me if they did adjust above MSRP under such circumstances but I'm hoping that isn't the case. Any dealer recommendations would also be appreciated.

At one dealership there were 2 leftover 2001 EX CRVs which have the equipment I want. If I was to get one of those what kind of price should I ask for? It seems everyone is skipping over these 2 and going straight for the 2002 so I imagine they'd give me a good deal. Any ideas?

    Many, many thanks!

Saw the 'rv up close today at a local dealer as they are just starting to arrive in this neck of the woods. (dealer was closed, so haven't been inside one yet...."grand unveiling" is slated for the 27th. Thought the black bumpers looked slightly more appealing in person than in pictures (saw a chianti red one)....had the optional cladding.....didn't look worth the bucks.
wheels & tires just barely big enough but 16's sure would improve the look alot. tan interior didn't look as bad as I thought it would (through the glass) but will reserve judgement 'til I get inside one. seems to have decent space but will have to check out the front footwells. forgot to look at the front wheel wells. Overall, fairly impressed but like you, would jump at an X-Trail or maybe the new Forester(depends on how it looks too). (Dealer left the rear cargo light on, so they may be looking at a dead battery come Mon. morn. !)

"Or...is this just me making and issue out of nothing?"

Until someone gives me a good reason for dirtaphobia, I'd have to say that it's not a significant issue. After all, there's about ten square feet of open space under the engine bay. I doubt very much that another couple feet in the wheels wells be a problem.
  • scnamescname Member Posts: 296
The 01 Civics also have that hole in wheel well, havn't heard any problem yet. Spinning wheels in mud is probably out of the question though.
  • canadatwocanadatwo Member Posts: 198
Yes only a couple square feet, but it is right where the wheels kick up dirt, sand, tar, mud, snow, ice, brake dust, water, crud, rubber etc.
Especially when the wheels are turning

For the $2.56 in materials Honda saved it sure was a foolish move.

Even the sales guys can't explain it!
  • jason_elsjason_els Member Posts: 57
I saw this at the dealer too and all I can say is YUK! Only explanation I can fathom is that the engine couldn't be cooled enough otherwise. It's a major concern for me driving daily on gravel and on winter roads with lots of salt and slush and on rainy roads covered with oil-slick rain. I can imagine sharp stones, branches, and....blech.... roadkill goo getting all over the engine compartment.

Honda is beginning to resemble Saab in its design process, '90% genius and 10% what-the-hell-were-they-thinking?'. This ranks up there with the anemic air conditioning and inadequate vaccuum pot on the cruise control of the last model. My next car is either going to be this or a Subaru Outback Sport and this is a serious concern for me. I hope Honda or a reputable aftermarket company makes a fix for this.

    Thanks!

I am supposed to pick up my CRV Friday...should I reconsider with the open wheel wells?? I never thought to look in the wells....I will only lose $100 deposit...Give me some feedback!
  • tmanmiatatmanmiata Member Posts: 79
I test drove a CR-V last Friday. The legroom seems to be better than the 1st Gen CR-V. I am 6' 3" and my legs are much longer than torso in terms of proportion. I guess the height adjustment seems to help. If I have it my way, an inch more in legroom would even be better, but I can live with it.
The local dealer added a "paint protection" for $799 and another protection package (cargo tray, wheel lock and half nose mask) for $399 (at least a 2.35x mark up comparing prices in HandA-accessories.com). All CR-Vs from that dealer have this "paint protection", you HAVE TO pay for that if you buy from them. That is just total rip off. Anybody knows any other dealer is adding similar or other mandatory add-ons? My recommendation is don't even give them your business if they insist on stuffs like this. The salesman later on slipped words like they will have "paint protection" on all new CR-V for at least a few months. I feel sorry for the salesman, I don't think it is his idea but rather the idea of the dealership.

Tomorrow it will be a week since I've been driving the new CR-V. I have 300 miles on it
    Likes:
-Smooth everything--shifting, acceleration, seats, controls, etc.
    -Sound of doors closing
-I'm pretty much used to the new look. It's not like the first impression/thoughts anymore
-The mileage I got: 25 in mix driving (that's a bonus!) Never got it with old V.
    -New car smell
    -Lots of cubbies
-Pick up on the highway...it's effortless compared to old V
-The sound on the stereo is 100% improved
-Shifter and parking brake are innovative, pretty cool on second thought.
    -Very quiet ride
    -Extra space
    -Tinted back windows
    -Looks expensive

    Dislikes:

    -No variable speed wipers
-The rear wipers cleans a smaller area...and wipes more toward the passenger side of the vehicle. I feel it should be just the opposite
-Had to take out the middle backseat headreast to improve visibility
-A few rattles near moon roof
-HVAC controls not allowing the A/C be turned off when directing the flow of air in all directions. Same with recirculating/fresh air settings.
-No indicator light for 4-wheel drive. Would like to know when's working.

Overall, I am happy with my decissions. I don't have second thoughs. No car that will satisfy you 100% b/c cars are not custom-made (at least most people). The manufacturer hopes to appeal to a lot of people.
  • varmitvarmit Member Posts: 1,125
TheKing - I would wait until I hear about there actually being a problem with the open wheel wells. At this point it sounds like the biggest problem with the design is that your engine could get dirty. No offense to the folks who are concerned about it, but, IMHO, this is not a deal breaker.
  • scnamescname Member Posts: 296
Could you elaborate on the moonroof rattle issue. When does it rattle, open or closed, on rough road or smooth road, what speed , cross wind condition, temperature, how often does it rattle. Thanks.
  • tatu1tatu1 Member Posts: 50
Don't pay for that stuff ! See my earlier post, I just bought a new 02 LX, the local dealer added on $900 worth of paint sealant, fabric protection and a pinstripe. I found an out of town dealer who didn't add any of that stuff and who was going to give my $150 off of sticker and free keyless entry. Right as I was leaving to buy from the out of town dealer, the local dealer called, he agreed to not charge me for any of the add ons, and match the other dealers price (plus $100 to offset my deposit). What does this prove ? The add on stuff isn't worth anything ! Don't pay for it.....

Anyone from the great white north have a confirmation on when they can take delivery??? I have a few good quotes, and I'll take whoever can deliver first.

The dealer said the official date is Dec. 1st, but they'd probably be able to deliver a few days earlier...
  • crviccrvic Member Posts: 37
    SCNME:

The rattle occurs when I drive over rough pavement at low speeds. I think it's near the moonroof, or close to those handles on the roof. If you turn up the radio, you can't hear them. I'm rather annoyed by these sounds, my wife says she doesn't even notice...might be a man thing. I had a few rattles when I bought the '98 V as well and they seem to go away with time for some reason.

If you go for the 01 CRV. Get the SE model, most dealers are selling them for $1.00 of invoice plus offering 1.9% financing. If you upgrade and go for 2002 CRV EX. The best price so far is $500.00 over invoice. If you don't need a car in a hurry, wait for the HOG Dealers stop over charging on the new CRV.
    Good Luck

    Well laid out interior.
Engine is very smooth at idle for such a large I4.
    A/C cools quick
The 4 inch drop in cargo floor creates a cavernous amount of storage room even with the seats in place.
The dealer I went to had 2 mountain bikes with all the wheels and seats on tied down in the back. That is very cool!
For this type of vehicle and price it should come with cross bars on the roof rack.
Tan interior takes some getting used to but really isn't that bad. Black is nice esp in the EX trim
Radio sounds good. Could use the optional subwoofer that was sold on the old CR-V through Hparts.com
    Carpeting seems a little flimsy.
Easily seats three average people in the back
Dash mounted shifter is not akward at all niether is the hand brake
Seems well put together. I was worried when I read that all CR-V were coming from England

I didn't have a chance to test drive. But I'll post it when i get a chance.
  • sluglineslugline Member Posts: 391
Whoa -- that's the first I've ever heard of this! I do see that an optional sub is available for the '02 models. Does anyone know of an available pic or online description of this subwoofer for older CR-Vs?
  • irastusirastus Member Posts: 5
It was my understanding, after reading it from various auto sources, that the initial CR-V production would be solely from Japan. About the middle of next year, half of the U.S. production will be brought in from England.

Does anyone know if the Japanese 02 CR-Vs have VINs starting with "J" ?

Long story short: Delivery (after recall delay): Monday 11/19/01 Swapped Tires: (after Test Drive) from Bridgestone Dueler HT 205/70/15 to Yokohama AVS Intermediate 215/65/15-what a difference! Driving impressions: HUGE improvement over old CRV- not as apparent initially, but after over 350 miles I am impressed. I had 5 people loaded into vehicle this past weekend and the power, handling, and ride quality were surprisingly excellent.
Road Noise: Subdued to quiet over a variety of surfaces. Transmission: Honda engineers did a fantastic job of mating the 4 speed auto to the 2.4 liter engine. Part throttle kickdowns are extremely smooth and useful. The transmission seems to think for you, and keeps the CRV moving along at a sporty clip. In addition the engine is only turning about 2600 rpm at 70mph which makes for quiet cruising and substantial available power for accelleration beyond that speed.
Front Seats; Very comfortable, firm and lumbar supportive. Rear Seats: Huge, and spacious. Radio/CD Changer: Good sound, better with CD. (installing Sub soon) Rear Trunk: Cavernous (optional rear cargo cover very intelligently designed, and there's even a place to store it!) Red Chianti with Saddle Interior. I LIKE the saddle interior with its' various shades of light & dark brown. Black interior is too boring for me. Exterior color is pretty sharp- a kind of mettallicy cranberry color. Overall: Even more impressed than ever with new CRV!

The wheel wells are not a deal breaker as far as I'm concerned. It is a bit too late for that! I was just wanting to pick y'alls brain to see if it may be a problem a bit down the road.

I'm still very happy with my decision to trade in the Civic. The pick-up the V has is great. I really have to watch myself I have caught myself going a bit faster that I should in a brand new car! The shifter on the dash is a lot nicer than I originally thought it would be. But I find I'm reaching for the shifter where the console would be.
