congrats on your new purchase. I noticed you mentioned that you didn't have a clicking noise. I hate to continue making an issue over the clicking noise but I'm curious that you don't hear. I took the advise of several members and test drove both an EX and LX. I heard the noise in both vehicles. It didn't seem as pronounced in the other cars (mine seems a lot louder); however, I definitely heard the noise in these other to CRV's. If you drive the car without the radio and pay close attention to the steering column you will hear a clicking noise when you come to a complete stop and then again when you accelerate. Also, if you place your hand on the auto shifter you can actually feel the clicking when you come to a stop. I just had a thought...did you get the automatic or manual. If you have time, please post your findings. thanks!

For anyone installing the roof rack cross bars, I highly recommend using a 6m-1.0 tap on the threads that are on the roof. Why? It's damn near impossible to screw in the the flang bolts because of the overspray paint. they go in so easily after being tapped. We were afraid of cross theading.
    happy motoring,

I had the security alarm installed at the dealer and have heard absolutely NO clicking noises at all. In fact I have not experienced anything noticeable or irritating as yet.
Paid 22550 for 02 EX/auto, including security alarm and front muds.

I noticed that the auto has 4.44 axle ratio while the 5-speed uses 4.77 axle ratio. Does anyone know what difference they make?
Axle ratio can be compared only if the gear ratios are identical. So, it can mean differently with different vehicles and different gear ratios. I will use an example to try explaining effects of axle/gear ratios,

    Assume that a vehicle has
    First gear ratio: 3.00:1
    Second gear ratio: 1.65:1
    and so on.
    Axle ratio: 3.50:1

This means that the vehicle has a overall drive ratio of 10.50:1 in first gear (3.00*3.50) and 4.95:1 in second gear.

Numerically higher overall drive ratio would indicate greater multiplication of torque reaching the wheels. Therefore first gear can pull more strongly than the second (almost 45% more than the second in our example). If the engine made 200 lb.-ft @ 4000 rpm, the torque available at wheel would be 200 * 10.50 = 2100 lb.-ft @ 4000 rpm(ignoring drivetrain losses and using a very simplified calculation).

Now, if we changed the axle ratio to 4.00:1, we have effectively increased the overall drive ratio in first gear to (3.00*4.00=) 12.00:1. So now, the effective torque at the wheels at 4000 rpm for the same engine would be 12.00*200 = 2400 lb.-ft. So, our vehicle will feel stronger evenif the engine is the same.

We improved the vehicle's pulling capability by using a numerically high overall drive ratio (in this case by using a numerically larger axle ratio). This same concept is used in vehicles with a low-gear.

If a vehicle has a 3.50:1 axle and has a 2.00:1 low gear drive, then, when the low gear is engaged, the effective axle ratio becomes 2.00*3.50 = 7.00:1. This doubles the pulling capability of the vehicle.

CRV uses different gear ratios between auto and manual transmission. With auto, the first gear overall drive ratio is 12.25:1 (I think), and with manual, it is 16.79:1 (I think), obtained by multiplying first gear ratio by axle ratio. This means that CRV will have a greater pull with manual transmission than with automatic.

The downside to using numerically high (referred to as 'short') overall drive ratio is that the engine revs higher for the same speed and limits the maximum speed attained in each gear. Therefore, short gearing is usually reserved for high revving engines.

Just got my blue automatic 2002 CR-V 6 days ago. I have to say that I am very pleased with my purchase and hopes to keep it that way for the longest time. I too have that clicking noise problem. Just like what the rest are saying, the noise usually appear before getting into a full stop and also right after stepping on the gas pedal from stop. Has anyone actually noticed that the noise is also there the first time you step on the brake to shift the gear from park to reverse/drive? To me, everything about the car is perfect aside from this annoying 'click'. Hope we can finally find out what's wrong.
  • canadianclcanadiancl Member Posts: 1,078
Would it have something to do with the transmission shift-lock mechanism, since it seems to be related to the application of the brakes, plus the fact the Angelica noted you can actually feel the clicking thru the shift colume?

I recall when we first got our '97 CR-V, a rattle/clicking noise developed which sounded like an idling lawn mower. We would hear it at certain times (but not all the time) when the car was idling or just starting up. It turned out to be 2 metal vacuum lines for the air conditioner touching and rattling at certain rpm range. The service guy just pulled them apart a bit by hand and solve the problem. However, I don't think the clicking noise you guys are experiencing is the same problem since you can feel it through the shifter.
  • zopszops Member Posts: 49
Like I said, I have noticed absolutely NO clicking
from the steering column and have the Honda dealer-installed security syestem as well.
The noise when you press the brake before shifting to drive is a standard feature.
It exists in our 98 Accord and 92 Toyota Corolla.
I think it is a saftey mechanism.

I've had my 2002 EX Silver CR-V for almost two wks now. Overall, I'm very pleased with the CR-V but am having a hard time with the transition of going from driving Honda Accords since 1985 to driving the CR-V. I traded in my 1994 Accord EX and really do miss it! Has anyone else felt this way? Also, I need suggestions on what product to use on the black bumpers and all the exterior black molding and the black dashboard to keep them dark black and looking good. This CR-V will require more exterior detail work than my Accord did. I remember one of my Honda Accords (either 85 or 87) had black bumpers and they turned a "milky white" color. Someone told me not to use Armorall because it makes them turn "milky white".
Would appreciate any helpful information you can provide. Thx.

Hi Anjelica2: You are right, I turn off the radio and there it is, the haunting clicking noise. As jomari23 describes, the click happens before the car goes to a full stop. I am still trying to see if it happens everytime I am going to a full stop. I will check the click while touching the auto shifter. I got the automatic transmission. I hope it is nothing to worry. Let see if anyone else can find the reason for this clicking noise.

Now that we are into annoying things, can somebody let me know, how far back should the parking brake go? Mine seems a little long, specially for a brand new car. Thanks for the response in advance.
  • varmitvarmit Member Posts: 1,125
Yuclin - There should be room for adjustment on your e-brake. When my '99 was delivered, it had a long "throw". The first time I took it in for an oil change, the service techs adjusted the tension to a more stiff and shorter pull. You can probably ask them to do the same for your's.

i have switched from civic to cr-v back in june of last year, and still everytime i drive by a black civic coupe i realize that i miss her. i love everything about my cr-v, but the civic had sunroof and a lot more go. the cr-v dies after 6000 rpm, civic would just get into the power range (it was a VTEC version)
as far as black trim, when i had a jetta it had lots of black trim pieces, i used black magic, it is some sort of very thick silicone goop that you carefully apply, it usually last about a month or two depending on how often you get your car washed. but makes the black really black. on the inside i use armor all wipes, and the honda vymil treatment.

Well, my 02 CR-V LX will be going into the dealer tomorrow. My ABS light has been coming on and off lately. Hmmm... hope it's nothing big. At least my truck will get a nice detailing from being in the service dept...

Use 303 aerospace protectant you can get it in shops that sell marine boat supplies. If you don't want to be bothered looking for 303. Get Vinylex by Lexol any auto supply house will stock it. These products last longer than Armor-all which by the way should not turn your vinyl milky. The people that told you this or you,had a buildup of wax or other products that was not supposed to be applied to vinyl and the Armour-all just made it show.

Interesting that people miss their Accords and Civics after buying CR-V's. I have an Accord and have been thinking of buying a CR-V when my lease expires. My biggest issue is whether I'd miss having a car to toss around corners and rev to the redline now and then. If I'm feeling this way already, I guess I should stick with a car.

As an aside- does anyone know if the Model X will have AWD? Is there a Model X board within Edmunds?
  • varmitvarmit Member Posts: 1,125
Eludwig - You could always try out the Toyota Matrix. That should provide some of the sporty handling you desire, while still offering a decent amount of versatility.
  • samstrsamstr Member Posts: 13
As I had posted earlier, I took my crv-ex 02 auto to the dealer to have it checked out for the annoying clicking noise. He told me that he was going to call tech support in california and see if they had any other complaints before he would actually try to find the problem himself.

This was on Friday afternoon and I have still not heard anything. Once I do i will post the information. I hope anyone else who gets any new info makes a post as well.

The other thing i noticed was that the clicking does not occur on braking when I have the car in 1st or 2nd gear; only in drive.

    Does anybody else notice that?
  • canadianclcanadiancl Member Posts: 1,078
It seems more and more people are reporting this mysterious clicking. How loud is this exactly? Is it feint enough so that normal road noise will drown it out, or is it loud enough for even unsuspecting passengers to notice and say "what the heck is that!?"

When I purchased my 1997 CRV the dealer said he would charge me only $480.00 for two additional years and 64,000 more miles on the warranty. I told him I'll keep the $480.00 in the bank, earn interest on it, and apply it to the cost of a new timing belt @ 90,000 miles. I told him the reason I always buy Honda products is because of how reliable they are. The CRV just turn over 130,000 miles, no problems, and rides like new. The new CRV has a timing chain so no need to put the money in the bank like I did.
  • guyfguyf Member Posts: 456
I agree. I bought it on my 1997 and never used it.
  • canadianclcanadiancl Member Posts: 1,078
Include me too. I bought it for my CL-S and have regretted it. I had thought all that electronics with the VSA and traction control and electric motors for the seats would be prone to future failure. But after 1 year and half with zero mechanical problem, I'm thinking perhaps I have wasted about $850 CDN (which is now = $1.99 USD)

Took my 02 EX to my Honda service department and mentioned clicking noise in steering column to the service tech. He drove it and heard the clicking noise. He called Honda tech line and was told the noise is a solenoid relay, there is no fix for it.
  • canadianclcanadiancl Member Posts: 1,078
    for what function?
  • altoonaltoon Member Posts: 64
I am awaiting delivery of my 5 speed EX and am wondering if I have the clicking noise to look forward to. By the way, yesterday was the anticipated production date on my vehicle. 30 more days! Probably premature to send out "birth" announcements.
  • odds009odds009 Member Posts: 25
I got the same clicking noise on my 1999 Accord.
Took it to the dealer and the mechanic told me that it's the solenoid sensor.

I have a black crv with foglights, gold package, and roof rack. What is the best product out there that will keep my trim as black as my paint?
  • ochoocho Member Posts: 5
Reverse lockout solenoid is what you are hearing. This prevents the selection of reverse while the vehicle is moving. When slowing down, the solenoid is engaged at about 2 mph. On acceleration, it disengages at about 4 – 5 mph. Yes, it is normal, all 02’s with A/T do this. The level of noise heard will depend on your hearing and the ambient noise level in the vehicle,
This is from CR-V Engineer (off the Honda Information Xxchange board).

Is this "problem" unique to the CR-V? One guy posted earlier he hears the same thing on his '99 Accord.
  • zircon2zircon2 Member Posts: 94
I could not believe the tire wear rating on the Brigestones Dueler on the 02 V. According to my convoluted math, we're looking at 36,000 mile tires on a new vehicle. Brutal.
  • angelica2angelica2 Member Posts: 30
I'm happy to hear that someone at Honda finally provided some answers to this most annoying problem. If it's considered a safety feature, then why isn't it a feature on the other suv's on the market. Do you think if enough CRV's complained about the problem they would have to develop some kind of remedy. Sorry to be badgering you with all these questions.
If I could get a hold of a Honda Engineer I'd be giving him an ear full. What is the "Honda Information Xchange Board?" Thanks for the post, it clarified the reason behind the noise but doesn't make me feel any better owning the car. I feel like it's a flaw in the design and Honda doesn't want to deal with it.

Has anyone had a good experience here in the Bay Area? I am trying to buy a manual CRV EX but the lowest quote I have had has been for 22K. I know the car is hot, but this is ridiculous... Invoice on it is 20302. I offered 700 over and they just laughed at me... Anyone having any luck anywhere else?
  • theracoontheracoon Member Posts: 666
Is actually the CR-V Information Xchange and can be found at http://www.hondasuv.com

The message boards are through the "Members Forum" link. There's a signup link that sends an email to Bing, the owner/moderator. He'll email you the password for access to the message boards.

Of course the "CR-V" in the title is not as descriptive as it used to be. Bing has added message boards for the new Honda Pilot, Model X, and the Acura MDX.

An excellent place to visit if you own a CR-V.

I won't disagree. If you get a new CR-V with Bridgestone Dueler H/Ts, don't get too attached to them. <GRIN> After only 30,000 miles, I replaced them with a set of Dueler H/Ls. Positive commentary of these from multiple sources, the 460AB rating, and 60,000-mile treadlife warranty make me believe that I won't be shopping again for a while. They're not cheap, however, with prices almost in Michelin territory.

    image

After 500 miles, I'm pleased to report that the vehicle is quieter and tracking more accurately than I can ever recall.

elugwig: You may be right about cornering, but I don't think you would miss revving the engine in a CR-V. Peak horsepower is at 6000 rpm. I don't know where the new redline is, but it was at 6800 in the old model. Then again, if you have a CR-V budget . . . how about giving the Subaru Impreza wagons a look? (I'd suggest the WRX, but I don't want to be responsible for your insurance agent gagging on his own drool. )

  • guyfguyf Member Posts: 456
The Bridgestone OEM Dueler did not last 30,000 miles on my 97 CR-V. I replaced them with Michelin X-Plus (Costco version of the X-One) and they were much better. My Santa Fe came with BF-Goodrich Long Trail TA and these are also much better than the Dueler's.

That Baltimore is now the port-of-entry for all Hondas arriving from the UK, which include CRVs and Civic Si's. They showed film footage on TV of new Civic Si's being unloaded from a large ship.

There will be 55,000 CRVs imported, and going as far west as the Mississippi. There will be 15,000 Civic Si's imported, and Baltimore will be the sole import point for these models, nationwide.

I have had my new EX/auto for 800 miles and have not heard this clicking noise, thankfully.
I even had the security alarm installed.
I have a friend who also bought one and he has not experienced any clicking either.
My wife's 98 accord also has no clicking.
If it was the solenoid would the clicking not
    occur on all 02 CRVs.

For those who are interested, there is a "teaser" site on Subaru of Japan's site on the all-new Forester. Click on the "Different. Different Challenge" button on the lower right.

I'm posting this here only because there has been some discussion of Foresters (vs CRVs) on this board before, and I think most people are aware that there is an all-new Forester just around the corner. In fact, it will debut next week at the Chicago Auto Show.

From what little is shown, it appears the Forester has not strayed very far from the current model in terms of size. I'm hoping they've done some clever engineering to find some extra space for rear passengers. As I've said before, Subaru is positioning the brand to be be "sporty," and the Forester to be the sporty alternative in the mini-SUV market. There will be a turbo model, not this year, but for MY04, the following year. There are some rumors, however, the the H-6 may(?) be available, as Subaru just released an H-6 Legacy in Japan. Prior to this the H-6 has been strictly an Outback exclusive.

Teaser pix remind me of the CR-V launch, remember? :-) Can't wait to see the whole thing, February 6th.

So the Civic Sis are arriving? Gotta go test drive one for the fun of it. Those things look like loads of fun.

Don't expect 36k miles from Dueler H/Ts. I got only 28k, though admittedly with aggressive driving. They are rated 180BB, vs. 460AB for the Dueler H/Ls for reference. I went Plus One and got tires rates 460AA.

I just ventured into the Mazda Tribute posts. Ouch... All the discussions there are about Mazda buying back Tributes and problems with the vehicles. Even the 2002 have problems. It looks like the vehicle is much more Ford than Mazda.

I see people posting that they have paid $500 or $800 over invoice. How does that price compare to MSRP? Sometimes it's hard to get the invoice or at times, you might not get the "correct" invoice but the MSRP is always there. If people would post how much they paid above or below MSRP, that would be better. Thanks in advance.

The BFG tires that are also shipped on CR-Vs have a longer tread life. Generally, most prefer the BFGs, but there are tradeoffs for each. The CR-V IX has a comparison of the two based on owner feedback. I have about 54K on my BFG tires and will most likely be replacing them with the same Dueler HLs that Slugline recently mounted on Texas Blue Betty.

The solenoid will be clicking on every A/T CR-V. How loud it is depends on how sensitive you are to such noises and what the ambient sound levels are. The only "fix" I might suggest is getting some sound dampening and lining the inside of the steering column. This can be purchsed in small quantities from Crutchfield or other audio outlets.

The CR-V Engineer also reads these boards, but keeps a low profile. (He must get a kick out of my rants.) In fact, the only reason he "decloaked" at the CR-V IX was to stop someone from using the incorrect part when fixing their CR-V. He answers a few questions every now and then, but he does so on his own time. He's not a public wiping post for every little complaint or problem that we might experience. That's what your dealer's service department is for. =)

sorry for the same question again. but I am really confused about it. Recently got a mail for dealer which remind me to do 1st service at 3750mi. while there is a sticker at my car window said come to do 1st service at 7500mi. Varmit suggest to do first service fellow the server condition which is 5000mi. Actually I commute 60mi each day which is qualify for normal condition. means 10k for first service. So mess! which schedule I should fellow? Honda web site said it use special oil for new car and suggest do not change oil earlier than suggested. Any gurus can give me some advice? Thanks!

Does that mean those of us east of the Mighty Miss get a split of Japan and UK produced vehicles or only UK? I'm sure no one knows yet but I'll buy in Iowa (wonder if they even have any Honda dealers) if it guarantees me one from Japan (just my personal preference).

Ah, I finally "felt" the clicking. The reason I said "felt" was because it is easier to feel than to hear the clicking. Like I mentioned I purposely drove with the radio off for a few days and didn't notice the clicking. Then this morning I tried again with my hand on the AT shifter. I finally felt the clicking right before at full stop and right after I stepped on the gas again, just like ocho described.
zops, try it and see if you can feel it. Once you feel it, then it is much easier to hear it. But still, the noise is very low, I have to turn off radio/cd and really "look" for it.

seguy - I have the Metal-Look Panel Kit on my Silver EX. It looks quite nice and enhanced the overall look of the interior. The trim matches the silver color of the rings of the gauges. If you decide to get it, be careful when you instaill the center piece that covers the radio/cd. The top portion seems to be a little narrower and leaves a very small gap on the edge. It is not perfect, but I can live with that.
I am interested in a hood deflector too. Like you, I haven't found one available yet.
  • seguyseguy Member Posts: 133
thanks for the input. I too have the silver (LX), or should I say will have within the week whenever it comes in. It looks good on the pics, at least good enough to spend the $140 on it. How long did it take you to install it?

    thanks,

The '91-'01 CR-Vs had service intervals of 3750 miles for "severe" conditions & 7500 miles for "normal" conditions. The intervals for the '02 CR-Vs have been reported to be 5000 miles and 10,000 miles (I've never seen an '02 owners manual).

Follow the information in the Owners Manual for your year CR-V. It will also define "severe" and "normal" conditions for you. For example, my understanding is that all of Canada is considered "severe".

And remember that the dealer makes more money if you bring your CR-V in more often for service, so always check what they tell you with what's printed in the owner's manual.

    :)
