If it was running rough, the CEL was just a symptom. It will light up even after a single misfire. Did they tell you what the code meant before they cleared it? It definitely registers a code that hints at where the problem may have been.

Why is it running smooth now? You got me. Maybe it was temperature, humidity level, gas quality, water in the gas, something like that?

Did you know OBDII even registers your top speed? They have all kinds of data they could analyze.

Can be a real PITA. It takes nothing to set one off. Of course, if they make them less sensitive, the feds get involved over emissions.

carguy...I know you must hate looking at that stupid light, but I wouldn't get too worked up over it. Hopefully it'll get fixed quickly for you.

I see these dumb lights on all of the time on trade in's. Volvos seem to ALWAYS be on!

Hope things work out with your new wheels.
Say, you being in Canada, is there any place in Canada to buy a hard spare tire cover (OEM) other than the dealers? The people at Honda accesories say they don't ship to Canada. My unit is a 99 EX.
    Thank you.
  • canadianclcanadiancl Member Posts: 1,078
The dealer is the only place that I know of to get OEM cover. However, I have seen a really neat looking spare tire locking device on a few CR-V's. Hard to describe it. But it does go over the whole tire. It looks like it's made of hard plastic and has a light or reflector in the middle. I think when you unlock it, it swings out to release the tire.

Just signed up after reading about this site. In January 2002, I bought a 2001 EX. I was looking at the new model and found it rather stunning to say the least but I had a 2000 Civic Si with two kids and was rather desperate to get rid of it for a CRV and it would have cost me too much for the same equipment. I got it for 3000$ less than the list price since it was the only one left (2001) with hitch, hood deflector, wood dashboard, gold trim and block heater so I really saved big time.

I have always loved this model. I also looked at the Santa Fe and was quite impressed with the quality however, I have always owned a Honda and never had anything go wrong after 4 models.
People are always stating that this model lacks power and I will be the first to say that yes it does not accelerate like my Si but it makes up in quietness and roominess and refinement......and the acceleration is not that bad to be honest! Anyways, I am very happy with this car and it is probably the most relaxing vehicle that I have ever driven. I live in Québec Canada and we have lots of snow and this vehicle does very well with snow tires. I have only owned one different 4x4(Suzuki Grand Vitera) that was the worst piece of crap ever! I only had it for 1 1/2 years and they had to make over 3000$ of repairs and 4 towings to the dealer. This time, there is no way I made the same mistake.

I think you made a very good choice. I've said before that the remaining '01 CR-V's can be a real bargain. In same ways they are better than the '02. For example I think the cloth interior has a higher quality look to it. Also the wheel/tire look more proportional to the body in the '01.

After reading about your Suzuki, I'm glad I didn't go for the XL-7. I did very briefly consider it.

Had on on my wife's 00 CR-V; looked great until my son closed the garage door on it (don't ask). SLiced into it really nice. Traded for a 02 CR-V Ex with soft cover - no threat from garage doors any longer.

Good job CanadianCL. I drive a 99 Ex 5 speed. Really nice car. Incredible how competitively priced the Accord is compared to far more troublesome cars.
  • sluglineslugline Member Posts: 391
IIRC, your dealer is Gillman/Sharpstown, right? I'm not surprised at the prices you're seeing. I remember picking up coolant from them for around $13/bottle. (This was before silicate-free coolant was available from Prestone, Xerex, etc.) Right now, I'm not sure that anyone (not even the dealerships) are completely comfortable with working on the new CR-V yet. Only in the past couple months should the first ones off the lot be coming in for their first oil change, right?

BTW, for anyone that doesn't keep up with the Owner's Club boards, I am setting up a CR-V owners outing to the Houston Auto Show on Saturday, April 13. See the Events board if you're interested.

I hope we come to love the Accord as much as we did the V. One thing about the 1st generation V, it's got character. We kinda miss that cute little bugger even though it was a little slow, a little noisy and a little rough around the edges.
  • rocky5656rocky5656 Member Posts: 34
Thanks for the info, if you see another one of those special tire covers, hope you can get some more info.
I agree about the older gen. CRV's. They have a classic straight lines body style. If only the roof was chopped about 2 inches, with a slope down at the rear top of another inch, it would be "perfect". Also addition of 16 or 17 wheels would make it better.
I looked closely at the 02 V, just couldn't get to like the body or interior any which way I looked at it. Just my opinion. Something like when Chevrolet changed the style in 1958.
1957 Chev. wow 1958 Chev whatever
  • canadianclcanadiancl Member Posts: 1,078
I think I know the type of auto accessory shop that sells those tire covers. I'll check out prices, etc. next time I see one. IMHO, I think the 02 CR-V lost that cuteness factor but at the same time doesn't really yet have the macho SUV look. This is due in large part to the fact they pushed out body dimensions in all directions but kept the same wheels, so the shape is not so much mini-SUV but more mini-minivan. The shorter hood also doesn't help.
  • sluglineslugline Member Posts: 391
I think canadiancl's right on the money. I really think Honda is shooting for the mini-minivan market segment with this vehicle. The pushed-out dimensions and non-tapered roofline are surely that way to boost the interior volume.
Rocky, if I read you correctly, then you're probably agreeable with the styling of the Toyota Matrix, right?
  • rocky5656rocky5656 Member Posts: 34
Yes, Matrix is okay, test drove one before we bought the 99 CRV. It was just too small, too car like, we like the higher seating position of the SUV's. Wife prefers the 02 Rav 4 styling, but I keep looking in the cargo area, looks too small. I've read the cargo capacity is comparable (Rav 4 to CRV 99)but it "looks" smaller.
Also test drove new Volks. Jetta diesel, and gas.
Gas model was a 6 months old demo, seat heaters didn't work, heater control to direct heat to floor didn't work, all this with only six months old?! Surprisingly, thought diesel didn't vibrate as much as the gas model on the highway, once you got used to the diesel knock. Diesel in Canada is a lot cheaper than gas.
Why is the PT CRuiser so popular? Another "classic" style derived from the timeless 1934 to 1938 Fords. Too bad it's a dressed up Neon junker.

Does anyone know how to get rid of some minor scratches on a bumper of a 2001 CRV? I have used Mother's Back to Black and it is fine but I am looking for something else to protect better and mask these scratches.
  • rockycowrockycow Member Posts: 114
For the 2002 CRV the first service (severe conditions) is 5000 oil change, the next is 10,000 which requires oil/filter change, rotate tires, lube lock latches and hinges with white lithium grease. The rest is check and inspect. I might have the dealer do the oil change but I can check the rotors when I rotate the tires and also check the CV and drive shaft boots, ball joints and chassis bolts for tightness etc., Interesting that the service manual doesnt require the oil filter to be changed at 5K

I too was wondering about the 5000 mile oil change. So either Honda has improved the materials
in the engine or they want it to break sooner.I
kind of doubt if they want to give you more years
of use before you have to get another car.I use to change my oil every 3000 miles. An auto columnist popular here says 5000 is sufficient.
Maybe the oil is better than 10 years ago.

Read an earlier post complaining about the lack of front passenger leg room due to the wheel well. Anyone else concerned about this? Is there more or less front passenger leg room in an 02 CR-V than in an 02 Rav-4? Thanks.
  • tomsrtomsr Member Posts: 325
The first time my wife sat in my CRV she asked
(does this seat raise up?) She is taller than me and has long legs.I don't know if she would like it for long trips. Her car is an Acura TL sedan
with seats that adjust to just about anybody.
To get lot's of room I could have had an Explorer
for the same money, but I wanted something different.

I just ordered an EX auto, black with body side cladding – like the rugged image of the cladding. But now I have a second thought – Does it make sense to have a BLACK cladding on the black exterior? Would it look good?

Any input would be appreciated. The V will take 4 – 6 weeks for delivery – I can change my mind before its arrival.

Is there a "better" way of tinting the windows without buying that doit yourself film "tape film"? In other words can you get it down with a spray or something, that way in three to five years the film wont either bubble or turn purple because of the sun?
  • altoonaltoon Member Posts: 64
I saw a black EX with cladding on the showroom floor. Thought it was VERY nice. I'd say if that is what you want, go for it.
  • hassiehassie Member Posts: 1
I've had my EX CRV for less than 2 weeks. At about 930 miles my CEL came on....I had used half the tank of gas. I double checked that my gas cap was on tight..it was...but tighted it anyway. After another 'trip' as the manual suggests the light is still on.

I see others have had the problem. Since I have NEVER had a new car with a warranty problem I wanted to be certain what I should expect at the dealer. Should I have to pay anything? I won't have the pull of the salesperson, since I purchased it at at dealer over 200 miles away.

I am also concerned if this is going to be a recurring problem...I travel in my job & often there is not a dealer for several hundred miles from where I am working.

    Thanks

Does anyone have experience with going to a 205/75/15 tire size on the older gen. CRV's? I was wondering if a 5% height increase would thereby reduce engine rpm by the same factor, thereby increasing highway fuel economy (1 to 5%?)
Of course, engine would need to have enough power to hold overdrive at the same speed. Does it?
Looks like enough room in the wheel wells.
    Thanks.

Picked up our '02 EX last Monday and have been truly enjoying it. This is our third new Honda and it appears to have the same excellent build quality and ergonomics that the previous ones have had.

We ordered some accessories from HandA.com (not here as yet), but have not found a good place (read that cheaper than $140.00) on the web for wood dash trim kits. Has anyone ordered a kit from Sherwood dash on the web? Their price for the '02 seems very low for what others are quoting and was curious if anyone has had any experience with buying from them.

    TIA for any input,
    redbelair
  • tomsrtomsr Member Posts: 325
I got the Honda original kit from HandA.It consist
of high quality plastic molded panels that easily
stick to the doors, vents, dash.I believe you get what you pay for but I would be interested to know if Sherwood or anybody else can do it for less.In some auto magazines I see ads for real
wood grain kits.I would like to see one of them.
Of course putting real wood in a CRV is like putting $1000 worth of custom wheels on a Yugo.
On another note I have increased my tire pressure
to 30 psi to try to get better MPG.Most roads I am
on are smooth pavement so the ride may not change.

I just wanted to make a few comments.First of all,I purchased a 2002Green CRV LX with Side air bags at a South Florida dealership Jan 27th for:believe this: $19,600.00 out the door and that includes tax, tag, title, and destination charges.(300 over invoice. Anyway, 3 days later some 16 year old spoiled brat whose Daddy just bought a new $20k Dodge Lancer ran a red light and t boned me into the passenger front quarterpanel, rumpled the hood, damaged the wrap around front fender and broke part of the headlight assembly. I could still drive the crv though and the damage to his car was much more extensive ;-). Well, I just got it repaired, and I want to give you all a few "heads up" on a few things. First: the CEL light came on for me also and I talked to my good friend who is a Honda Certified mechanic. He said that if you leave your car running when you fill up your tank(which I usually do) it throws off that code because of fuel pressure changes. So, if your doing that...DON'T!!!! Also: tire wear...my buddy also noticed some slight feathering on my tires al ready which is a sign of misalignment. So you might want to have your tires checked for even wear ( ( only have 1700 miles)One more heads up:
I have been upgrading my stereo: replaced the weak speakers with 6 and a half inch cerwin vega in the front and rockfords in the back, an amplified bazooka bass tube in the far back and a 400 watt 4 channel amp under the drivers seat (not quite finished with installation)I wanted to mention thatI busted the supports of the triangle shaped window structure on the rear door panels as I was removing the door panel. I tried to pop it with a screwdriver and the plastic busted on both sides. Be careful when removing them!!!

Gillman/Sharpstown gave me their schedule - every 3750 miles for oil change. I don't have to take it there of course, but has made me wonder why the dealer recommends this?? Could it be the hot weather in Houston?
  • davisdogdavisdog Member Posts: 99
The dealer recommends it because the more you come in the more money you pay them.

...Honda recommends 10000 for normal driving and 5000 for severe (lots of short trips or hot temp etc...) I was joking with my dealer and he said they recommend 5000/severe schedule for everybody, but that's really only to get the business!
  • sluglineslugline Member Posts: 391
Depend on your owner's manual for the proper service schedule. Or head on over to http://www.ahm-ownerlink.com and create a profile for your vehicle. This is an American Honda Motor Co. website that will give you information on caring for your car -- from the people that made your car. Keep in mind that one of Honda's selling points for its newest vehicles (Civic and CR-V) is a _reduction_ in scheduled maintenance.
  • muckyduckmuckyduck Member Posts: 219
The dealer does not make any money if I don't take my car there for service, no matter what the schedule is.
I have already registered for the owner link.
I don't have a problem changing oil every 3750 - I'm used to doing it every 3000 on my other cars. I know other car makers are also going to this interval. Does the auto industry have enough data/time with this 5000/10000 mile schedule to believe that this will not harm the engine over an extended period?
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Tint: go with metallic tint, which doesn't turn purple. Professional installation is the key - ask to see a few cars already tinted and look for bubbles and peeling on those.

I've had SolarGard dyed film (non-metallic) since 1998 and it has not turned purple or faded. One window peeled but they removed and installed new tint film for free.

There's a whole topic on tint, BTW.

why did you leave your car running while at a gas station? im pretty sure at every major gas station they put up signs that say 'please turn your car off before filling up' or something similar.
  • subzero206subzero206 Member Posts: 111
when i got my car tinted the guy said that its very important that i DONT OPEN THE WINDOWS for 3 days to let it completely dry so there wont be bubbles/peeling in the future.
  • fasteddie9fasteddie9 Member Posts: 63
do they work? which brand? are they worth it?
i am thinking about getting one for my new crv. i think the bra is out. i have also seen stuff on a clear film by 3m called stonegard.
  • canadianclcanadiancl Member Posts: 1,078
I think a 75 aspect ratio tire would fit, but your speedometer would be off a bit. And I don't know about gas savings. Yes, the engine would turn at a slightly lower rpm, but wouldn't there be more rotational mass when accelerating which may just even out the gas consumption? The bigger tire would make the vehicle look a little better, but I don't really think the tire/wheel look all that small on the 1st generation V.
  • jfigueroa1jfigueroa1 Member Posts: 209
Does anyone have the cargo tray and does it have the holes for the tie downs? I hope not, regarding the tinted windows go to solargard.com it is a good link for info. I have the quantum tint film they look good, just make sure a get a good shop to install them.

If it didn't have cut outs it wouldn't fit flush.

I am not impressed with the online honda site. They still are saying use 5-30 when the owners manual says 5-20 motor oil. I use what is in print. One of the dealers I called on this says they got a notice to use 5-20 in January.

I think my driver's side armrest has shifted so it slants inside of being horizontal. The passenger side appears to be okay . It may have always been that way and I didn't notice because of other things about my new car that I was more interested in. Is this fixable? Since the driver's side is used much more than the passenger, will this be an continuing issue - that with use, the rest will slant down more and more??
  • drummer55drummer55 Member Posts: 2
My son had a 2000 CR-V that had it check engine light come on after he had driven about a half tank of gas. 10 trips to the dealer or so with no fixes and he ended up with a new car. After the dealer got the car, a smart tech found a very tiny hole in the gas tank that would not leak gas, but would leak air. They replaced the tank and someone else has a nice car. I've got the same model and really enjoy it.
  • carguy62carguy62 Member Posts: 545
Mine (drivers) has always been lower than horizontal whereas the passenger's seems pretty straight. If someone figures out how to adjust it, let me know---I will not have them do it---except maybe when I have them fix the rocking seat.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Good point subzero, but I would stretch that to 7 days. Seriously, do not open the windows, even for tolls open your door. We did that for my wife's car and the tint is perfect 4 years later.

Drummer: in that case the CEL really worked, it hinted at a potentially serious problem, that was later resolved.

    -juice
  • carguy62carguy62 Member Posts: 545
How many times did they say there was nothing wrong? 10 trips? What did they do each time? Did they just reset the CEL? What codes were pulled?

That's my whole point regarding this situation, still not enough information.

If drummer55 would care to fill in the rest of the story, I know I for one would be interested.

I'm new this board but I may be interested in purchasing a 01/02 HCRV. I have a bike carrier which attaches to a hitch and can carry up to 4 bikes. I understand the HCRV will only accommodate a CLASS 1 Hitch. I'm getting different feedback from the dealerships - ie. Class 1 hitch is too small for my bike carrier whereas others indicate a Class 1 hitch will carry 1,000 1lbs. Does anyone have any input on this subject. I don't want to buy roof mounted bike carrier due to inconvenience.
  • altoonaltoon Member Posts: 64
I bought the cargo tray last week and it does have holes (with lips) for the tie downs.
  • kevinctkevinct Member Posts: 3
I won't say what my kids thinks it means. Does it stand for anything, or just a model designation?
  • sluglineslugline Member Posts: 391
That's Honda talking, of course. I have previously linked a press release fairly recently that confirms this. This question comes up so much that I think one of our hosts should link it on the left hand side of these webpages.

rockycow: That's unfortunate, but printed documentation isn't always crystal clear either. I have both the Owners Manual and the Honda Service Manual for my 2000 CR-V. The Owners Manual advocates 10W-30 for my conditions and the Service Manual leaves me with a recommendation of 5W-30. I let the oil filler cap (5W-30) be the tiebreaker.

And yeah folks, what advantage could there be to leaving the engine running at the pump??? I just hope snooklover doesn't also leave his car to "pay inside." :-)
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Comfortable Runabout Vehicle. But a CR-V EX does sound a lot like "Cervix".

Class I hitch means a tongue weight limit of 200 lbs. That's what counts with bike racks, not the tow limit, which would require wheels on a trailer to spread the weight.

Also look at the receiver. Class I usually means 1.25" size receiver. Class II is 2", so you may need an adaptor.

    -juice
  • carguy62carguy62 Member Posts: 545
Must be just me but how hard is it to type "CR-V". And why don't you share what your kids call it---edit if you have to---I could use a laugh.

I've seen CRV and crv. I'm sure there are others.

They should just eliminate the dash.

If posts went around with "sivic" or "ahccord", there'd be a stink.
