YES!!
Disconnect the switching wire from the relay, now operate the switch. Does it still blow? If it does, then the wire is shorted to ground somewhere. If it doesn't, then you've made the wrong connection at the relay.
Have a good night,
James
Don't forget to post the relay connections......... and sorry, New Hampshire is too far for a house call!!!
:--)

If that doesn't work, sending in a Feedback Form might get a response.

Well, we've hit a bit of a warming trend - so it was time for another little drive about. Drove over to the dealer to inquire about the gear issue. They noted it down and said to wait a little and see if it happens again (or whether it will work itself out). For the second day in a row there were no issues - so maybe it was a breaking in thing complicated by the supremely frigid temperatures. I also picked up and installed locking lug nuts. So now Buffy doesn't have to worry about losing her wheels (well, at least not as much as before)! Another fun, fun, fun evening of driving about.
:-)

30 is the in line fuse red wire
86 is relay ground
85 goes to the switch
It was pretty basic and all the wires were different colors to make it just a little easier.
Thanks for the assistance.
James
Ruined the movie for me...
(Remember they are on a future Earth in a futureistic vehicle, you would think they would not have used the word "fuse".. Maybe Hyper relay circuit or something)

I was going to recommend getting a anti rock sway bar. You may not be interested if you are not off-roading a lot yet.

Your front one is more likely to be missing but you may want to check and see if your rear one is there.
Texasjeep, thanks for the link on the anti rock. I think I'll end up with either an Addco or a stock sway bar and use quick disco's for it. I really want to reduce the rock n roll while on the roads.

As you can see, 87a is connected to 30 until power is applied to the coil (via 85 and 86), when thirty is switched to 87. This enables a relay to be used to switch something off as well as on.
However, as you are blowing a fuse without even being connected to the relay it sounds like it must be the switch. Is it a simple single pole, single throw type?
My favorite "wiring" source; Good catalog and diagrams of switches: http://www.waytekwire.com
their page on relays in PDF:

Waytek sells the same switches that ARB provides for its compressor and air lockers. The nice thing about these switches is that they are a direct fit for the TJ switch panel and come in various arrangements and colors, both illuminated and plain. On thier site:

Those switches make it easy to do a really nice OE type installation. Interesting site.
And I'm like Paul - I wish I could ONLY put 19,000 miles on in a year. The last 2 years were light on the Wrangler because we had mild winters but this year seems to be more of a Jeep year. And the more we drive it as our daily driver, the more we are thinking about replacing the Taco with the extended version of the Wrangler.
Gman, sorry to hear about the tranny and hope that the dealer can get it fixed.
I took all the lights off the house today. Man, 10 hours to put them up and 1.5 to take them down.
Time to go enjoy the cold... winter is back to MD, low 30's now all we need is some snow.
Tom: hang in there man you can do it. I forget who said itm, but get everything out of the house. If it's there then the temptation is just too close.
Tony
There are 3 connections on the back, ground, power and relay.
Going out to try to figure this thing out again.
James
I think we just found the answer!!!
:--)
On the weather front, the news says to expect some freezing rain *yuk* this evening. I don't want to be out driving in that.
Yeah, I like the extended Wrangler the more I see it. Entertaining thoughts have it being my replacement once the shorty Wrangler is paid off.
Stephen
All you need do is to remove the ground connection from the switch you are already using.
However, if you're not sure, and you have every right not to be, then stop right now and consult a qualified auto electrician.
The advice you get here is worth exactly what you pay for it. Use common sense in whether to take it or not.
The ground wire for the system is already outside the firewall and comes from the relay for the lights. It is attached to a bolt in the engine bay. The positive wire is attached to the battery.

I am sure it will become an on again/off again topic.
Tom, How far is Turkey Bay from Huntsville, AL?
-Paul
I got them done and realized I have one headlight that is blown~!!! Pretty sure I can handle that!
Mac24 if you ever get up to New Hampshire let me know! I owe you a breakfast.
This is the only place I have ever lived where the UPS guy cant get up the driveway, maybe they should drive jeeps.
Thanks
James
Thanks,
Mike
Come up sometime and I'll try to join you and Tom.
You gonna be in Huntsville sometime soon?
Man, it would be great if you could come on up to Turkey Bay and wheel with me!
Tom
Have you hugged your Jeep today?
Tom
Have you hugged your Jeep today?
Once again, I have to tell you guys how much your support means to me. It means a LOT.
Thanks a bunch!
As far as removing all the temptation, I don't go along with that. I don't think I'm ready for that yet.
NO! I'm not saying I need cigs around in case I fail. I'm not saying that at all.
The reason that I need cigs available is so that when I am not smoking, it's not because I don't have any around. If I had been through one of those tough times when I was thinkin' about smoking real bad for a long time, and if I didn't have some smokes handy, then as soon as I got around someone smoking or got to a place where I could buy a pack, then I would be tempted to bum a smoke or buy a pack. If, however, I fight through the urges while having my own smokes available the whole time, then I will know that I have not smoked because I CHOSE not to, not just because I didn't have the opportunity.
Don't know if that makes sense to ya or not, but it does to me.
