I just received my new Duramax with Allison and it is quiet. For the died-in-the-wool diesel addicts it still sounds like a diesel, has the power curve of a diesel, but is a lot quieter. I'm still in the 500 mile break-in period so I cannot give any details about all-out acceleration or towing performance, but I'm not worried. This is my first diesel and I would be grateful for any advice any of you experienced diesel drivers may have. I live in north Texas, so the winters are not extreme, but the summers are! p.s. I keep seeing LOL in the messages. At the risk of sounding stupid, what does that mean?
Took a black GMC LT fully loaded extended cab, short bed for long test drive. Truck had just been driven from Mich to Colorado Springs dealer. Apparently the dealer bought it from another dealer in MI. Total of 2200 miles on truck. Fully loaded including onstar, heated seats. Everything but heated mirrors (must get rear window defrost option for heated mirrors). Had a change to speak to delivery girl (she was still unloading personal stuff from truck when I pulled in.) Obviously I can't verify story but she stated she put 14 gal fuel at 300 miles....works out to 21.4 if true. During test drive we put 50 + miles on with some tough speeds. Power feels awsome although couldn't hook up anything to test pull. Transmission very smooth - - feels more like a 5 speed sports car than a 2500 hd truck. Very QUICK....stopping power with downshifting of tranny also very impressive. Great ride, and at one point the wife had the damm thing going 95 -- smooth as a baby's butt. Only thing I didn't like was short bed (gives a 26 gallon tank) and long bed comes with 34. Dealer wouldn't deal. Asking price was 43500 with no trade and 2200 miles. Wouldn't even discuss extending warrenty or any other options. Asked for running boards I bed liner..no deal. No break on interest rate (think they said 8%.) but not sure. Sales guy was a little disappointed when I told them 40k out the door but manager said he "couldn't". Next day they offered it at 42500. I said no, 40K. Truck was sold within a couple of hours at 42500 (sales guy couldn't resist callling me to extend condolences I guess) Oh well. GM makes more than one of everything I think. So, impression is this is one hell of a truck if it doesn't fall apart in the first year. However, with economy going down hill, factories laying off and interest rates probably on the way down, I think this truck will be on the streets in 6-10 months at 5 K less than they want now.
My new 2500HD 2WD extended cab, short bed LT trim, which includes the Onstar, heated leather seats, heated outside mirrors and rear window defrost etc.,Duramax/Allison with locking differential, trailering package, and including destination charge had a MSRP of 37,978.00. I think the dealer in Colorado Springs must be used to gouging the Air Force cadets, or is looking for early retirement. None of the dealers I talked to here in north Texas would negotiate from the MSRP, but they didn't add on to it like it sounds yours did.
Chris, Truck looks real good, bucks look even better are bucks that size common down there? We had a few big bucks taken here this year the largest scored 180 which is huge for around here. Average bucks usually score around 120 and up. Congratulations on those two big boys and from our family to yours Merry Christmas. Suburbansrule
Thanks for the compliments...well the bucks in texas get pretty big, you just have to have the $$ to get them...that wide buck was the biggest one i have ever taken and it was about a 125-130 BC...if you like deer hunting there is a great website at www.huntinfo.com and then go to group talk or something like that...they have a message forum that is really cool with hunteres from all over the nation...
anyway Merry Christmas to you and your family and have a safe holiday!
80 bucks a piece..pretty good considering they gave me 50 bucksa piece for my factory wheels.. my deal was 700 bucks out the door with trade in of my stock wheels and tires...THanks for the compliments !
Planning on purchasing a crew-cab 4x4 with this combo, can anyone report on how this combo is performing? Is there a big drop-off from the 4.10's? How is the fuel mileage? Thanks, for any comments.
About this post actually being posted or getting my truck any time soon. I ordered a 2500HD 4X4 Crew cab November 2. Still no TPW. I'm not getting too optimistic about the January delivery date the salesman "thought" would happen. Looking at this board it seems like average delivery is about 4 months. So, since I have time to wait I might as well get some info. I ordered the 6.0 with the automatic (cut me some slack, I don't even own a trailer). Can anyone give an idea for MPG? Also I'd like to hear opinions on the options available since I seem to have time to add more if I need to. I got the LS package with a few goodies on top like the auxillary battery. How does that thing work? Also, does anyone know if Westin or MAPP has running boards or nerf bars or push bars available for this model? One last question, Has antone felt the need to run out and add dual exhaust? Does this screw up the warranty?
The stock exhaust is warranted. The duals will be warranted from the company you buy it from. If the dealer says the problems you are having relates to the new dual exhaust, you may have to reinstall the stock exhaust to prove him wrong. Actually, the dealer has to prove that the duals are causing the problem. But you know how that goes....
Why they don't offer dual exhaust as an option. I see A LOT of trucks with it. I finally added it to my '92 along with an engine rebuild and the sound alone sure gave me the impression the thing was running better.
Posted just fine in other Silverado topic and tried to post in this one and kept getting a 'your already logged in' message and would not post -- Grrrrrrr
Gordo - the 3.73 will most likely give you better gas millage so unless your commercial pulling 'Road Graders' on a flat bed shouldn't need the 4.10.
Talked to guy today has a 3 week old 'burb with 8.1/alli/3.73 just loves it. Likened it to a 8000lb sport car for 'SCAT'. He also checked milage around town after first week and was getting 12.5. It's a 4x4 and does snow plowing.
Thanks for the info., I'm not towing real heavy loads so I'd like to get the 3.73's and get the better gas mileage. I've driven the truck with 4.10's but I can't find one to test drive with 3.73's, the truck with the 4.10's had loads of power.
the factory muffler and add two glasspack mufflers..if you get under and look, you see the factory muffler has two inlets and two outlets and then it merges into the one big 3.5 inch factory exhaust pipe..so i took off the factory muffler and added two glasspacks that merge back into the big 3.5 pipe..
I stopped in at a muffler shop to get a ball park price for adding dual. Found out that it would not be a "true" dual since they start at the converter and work back. Said I was asking for trouble if I messed with anything upstream of the converter due to computer and o2 sensors and the like. Any comments?
the reason i know there is no allisons in burbs is that they would have to raise the burb's body like they did on the HD's...Hence the reason no DMAX in the burb because they can't fit the allison tranmission under the LD frame...yes the 2500 burb is a LD frame..unless they came out with an HD burb, there is no allison...
I would be thrilled to have gotten a 2500HD in four months. I ordered a 6.0 SLT GMC the first week of August. Dealer advised GM has a shortage of 6.0 engines and it may be spring to summer 01 before I see one. He advised he might be able to order me a 8.1/Allison SLE so I jumped on it. Build date is January 2nd, but we'll see. I ordered the 3.73's with the 8.1 for the sake of gas mileage, but am now a little worried. Most of the recent posts suggest 4.10's are more desirable since the Allison's 5th gear is .71.
Well - I didn't look underneath - Just going by what this guy told me, however this guy is no dummy and probably knows what he bought as he was very specific about the 8100/Alli/3.73 and has had '99 and '00 Pu's before this.
He did also state this 'burb was an 'HD' although i didn't see a '2500HD' embleme on it and was also surprised about it being an HD.
INTERESTING ANYWAY as makes no diff. to me as i'm waiting for HD Pu. Was encouraged about the mileage numbers though!!
Maybe Tim will get to the bottom of this question as he seems to be a little interested in a 'burb' next time.
Buying a new 2500 extended cab, short box, w/6.0 this week. Used as day to day transportation, but also to tow 7,500-8,000 lb enclosed car hauler (tows like having a sail hung behind the truck). My theory has been that at 75 mph in hilly areas (though clearly not mountains), the truck would not hold OD even with 4.10, so to get 3.73 and just tow in 3rd gear. Salesman thinks I'm wrong, but has no experience or customers towing similar trailer.
Test drove a 8.1 w/4.10's last week. WAY more truck than I need, but what a great motor!
but as you said it makes no difference to us...there are in fact no HD burbs...but there are 8.1L burbs with would seem like a HD burb to me...I guess what i am trying to say that unless they have a suburban using the 2500HD Body style which i know they aren't, then there is no way the allison is in a burb..cuz it won't fit..i sure hope someone doesn't bet that guy any money on whether or not he has got one cuz he is going to lose...
anyway, i hope you enjoy your 8.1l and allison because i know that your 8.1 will have it! lol...Hope everyone has a good and safe new years weekend!
4x4's right no allisons in burbs 8600 gvw available with 4L80E tranny only burbs not avail with 9200 gvw aka (HD) which is where allison option is avail. Personally I would like to see GM put the allison in the burbs its one awesome tranny Suburbansrule
Under "preferences" I selected to have my topics listed in alphabetical order. The default that you have will list the latest posted topic on the top and push the rest down...so as people post...the list gets totally screwed up. Select alphabetical order and it will be there the same place that you last left it... ;-)
Ordered a 2500 LT ex. cab, I bed, 8.1/allison Oct. 6. Still no confirmation from factory. Dealer told me Fri.,29th that starting Jan. 6-01 GM will let dealers place customers orders without a dealer allocation. Don't Know if he's b.s.ing me or not. Anyone else have any info. on this? Tramper
Placed an order on 11/13/00 for a 2500 HD EX LB with 8.1 Allision 5-speed auto. and 4:10 rear-end. This will be used to tow a 33 foot fifth wheel.
I noticed that everyone is worried about gas mileage. If, that is the case then you should consider a 4 banger. Because you can't get performance and gas mileage at the same time.
I was told by the sales manager where I ordered the HD from, that it takes between 30 - 300 days to get the HD. I grew up with horse power and won't settle for anything less.
I have always been a Ford Man. However after having to lemon law my 99 Ford Wind Star. And recently a friends tranny went out in the first 500mi on His 2k f350 power stroke crew cab. I am considering jumping the sinking ship. The price on the new 2500/3500 HD is higher but I do like the truck. I think GM made a mistake not offering a non dually 3500. Any input on what anybody paid over invoice when ordering. I want a 2500HD LT crew cab diesel. Also any input on the truck itself good or bad.
Just finished up 1500 mile trek with Silver ado CT 2500HD 8.1/4.10. Average 12.6 mpg on the interstate with 500 l. load for half of the trip. High was 13.1 mpg .. Cruise was set on 80 mph. Ride was excellent.
Keep seeing guys in Texas talking about MSRP! Plane tickets to most places are only $150-250. Was able to find two 2500HD CT for invoice and invoice +$50. Bought one for myself and my dad pickup up the other. One was in GA the other in OH. Just took a little foot work.
I don't know who is paying MSRP in Texas but I'm paying about $250.00 over invoice and they will bring it to my front door in Huntsville Texas on a trailer. That means no air fare just a call on their 800 number. Hope you didn't pay to much for gas driving home after paying air fare to get there. Good luck on your new 2500 D. P.. My 2500 ID that I ordered from Covert Chewy in Bastrop Texas will have the 8.1/Allison tarn and loaded to the hills. Not worried about gas mileage as if you can't afford the gas don't buy the truck.
Paying $200 over invoice for mine ( if I ever get it ) But I did see one on at a dealer the other day with a $2000 "Market" add-on. First they can't deliver what they promise now they want to try to screw you on the price. Those Ford 250SD's are looking better and better.
I was comparing the stats side by side of the 2500HD CC & the F250 SD CC, why is it that the trucks are the same width but the GM product has 6 inches less hip room then the Ford, that seems like alot of lost comfort. I was hoping Gm would come out with their new CC before, but they didn't so I bought a SD, I 'm very happy with my Truck but I'm always open to new ideas, Theirs just not too much new there when comparing side by side,it would seem that GM would do something, since they knew what the competition had, take away the new tranny & motor and the rest of the truck doesn't stand up to the Super Duties...... I see Tim will have fun with this.
and noticed the Ford had more ground clearance. It was taller which might make for trouble in a parking garage. The only thing I could think of on the hip room was maybe the doors on the chevy had pockets or arm rests or something that caused them to be thicker than the Ford's?
does any body out their know if you can hook a phone to the on star system so you have only one antenna plus it would be nice to hook up so the mic can be used for hands free
I think the only way to do that is to have the dealer install the phone as an option. I checked the factory manual which doesn't have any info on tapping into the antennae.
I guess it all depends on how good you want the install to look as the power source might be another problem. It seems that the PCM controls more power functions that need to be programmed by the tech2 unit.
No that was not me that bought a Tahoe. Hope to get my truck before long but who knows when that will be. GM was shut-down the last two weeks (per my salesman) but was suppose to start back this week so maybe they will built my truck. Tried to look at your truck on picturetrail.com/4x4 but couldn't get into site. Hope you enjoy yours, sounds like a fine truck. I see that the 8.1 has gone up $250.00 but I have a firm price on my deal. The dealer here in Huntsville wanted $450.00 over invoice at time of delivery (no way) was I going for a deal like that.
I haven't used this before, so if I make any grievous mistakes, I apologize in advance.
I'm looking for information of all kinds on the 2001 1500 Ext. Cab SB and the 2500 Ext. SB Silverado. Particularly right now, does anyone know the maximum tire size that will fit without modification on the 1/2 ton with the Z71 package and on the 3/4 ton with the Firm Ride (Z85) suspension package? I'm looking to buy, but want to know how big a tire I can stuff in it without making any changes. Also, is there enough of a difference in the tire size from 245/75 to whatever will fit to make changing the axle gearing worthwhile? Thanks...
I ordered a 2500 Crew, 6.0, 4.10, 4x4, on 18 Aug and it was delivered on 19 Dec. So far I'm real pleased, rides great and the power is all there, I only have about 400 miles on it so far but I'm getting 13 mpg average. My only [non-permissible content removed] so far is the fuel tank appears to be only about 28 gal, haven't confirmed that yet though.

westin has nerf bars out for the HD...
I added dual glasspacks to my truck but left the factory one outlet pipe..Sounds very good..
Local dealer had to trade an HD Pu for it from a dealer in MSP.

I thought I read a while back though that you just got a TAhoe from Covert and one of the Covert girls??
By the way we ordered from Rox and got it for invoice..I got the truck OCT 26th..ordered on Aug7th.. pictures at www.picturetrail.com/4x4
Has picks of the 285's, bedliner, tint, vent visors, new wheels, etc..

I was thinking that with the extra height of the HD..and still 245's...perhaps I may have to get 285's when I get one...
How is full turning for rubbing with new tires?...I'd probably stay with the orignal wheels if I could....I like those!
