The previous post was really mine, but to save me time getting into Wrangler IV, tonkadave sent me a link to go straight to this page while we were chatting, so it was under his log-in.
That's why it appears to be his post instead of mine.
And I will be glad to help you think of a name. Tonka and I are trying to come up with a name for his Jeep too.
Speaking to Mark & Craig on the luster (or lack thereof) in the plastic body moldings:
All righty Gentlemen, as a female who doesn't so much as look under the hood of my 99 I6 Laredo (the mechanics at my Dealership take incredible care of me), I do actually have an opinion to render on this topic.
While I don't know a crankshaft from a camshaft, I am rather fastidious in the appearance of my vehicle. (Translation = neat freak.) Not only do I hand wash my Laredo (Champagne Pearl top half, gray lower panels), but also my Mom's 97 Wrangler (red paint with black body moldings)... when she's behaving. ) While I can agree with Craig's concern regarding the fading of the plastic, I have to say that from a general maintenance/long term looks perspective the plastic is far more forgiving than a painted surface would be. (Big confession here Guys: I've had a couple of oopsies that Daddy kindly buffed out for me with a piece of sandpaper to a point that, unless you know where to look, you almost cannot see the couple of scratches in my Jeep's front and rear bumpers. That inexpensive fix would not have been possible on the painted version.)
To the cosmetic issues; I have found a little WD-40 to be the most effective at taking the bits of road tar off of the plastic (not to mention the bug guts off of the chrome grill); then some elbow grease with soap and water does well on the grime. Once the car is all washed and dried, I use Armour All on the grey panels, door handles, side view mirrors, etc. but Tire Wet on the black tire flares of my Mom's Wranger. Point to the Guys: As a girl who often wears skirts, I have found the Tire Wet facilitates dirt cling; first to the surface... and then to my clothes ( on more than one occasion. If you, or a loved one, will be snuggled up against the side panels thanks to a cozy parking spot... I would stay away from Tire Wet.
My Jeep must not look too bad... I work at a call center for a competitive manufacturer, and more than one dyed-in-the wool loyalist has admitted my Jeep looks pretty darn good at almost 2 years old, left outside to the Oregon elements, over 40K miles, and a couple of oopsies.

Hi Tara. Nice post. I agree the Tire Wet can be messy; that is why, as I said, I apply it to a cloth first and then rub it on the plastic fenders, with no excess left on the surface at all. That seems to give a nice shine without the mess. Personally, I don't put it on my tires because I don't want that much shine. - thats where I use the Armor All. But that's me.
I told my wife and two daughters (11 and 6 years old) that there are mothers and daughters in Oregon who love their Jeeps and keep them obsessively clean like I do. I then told my wife I was leaving her and moving (from Baltimore) to Oregon immediately. She then informed me that by the time she was done with me the only thing I would get to keep is the Tire Wet I now use to clean our Wrangler. So for now I'm staying in Maryland - of course I want to use the Wrangler this summer. But keep posting - these guys could use it.
Hmmm... now there is where us Fastidious Creatures differ. Sometimes I will just dress my tires... clean the chrome with wheel cleaner... Whitey's and a gentle scrub to make the white lettering on those Goodyear Tires look like they're trying to pop off... liberal coat of Tire Wet... back with a cloth to clean off any excess that hit the chrome. Just that alone (too cold in the winter to clean the whole truck sometimes) makes my Jeep look good as new... and decadently sexy. One of the things I love about Jeep is that they do not skimp dough when they tire their vehicles.
Too bad about the MD grounding... although I do understand your loyalty to your Jeep. ) Mom won't take her Wrangler off road... but a few suburban mud puddles and detours have me eager for a little camping/off road playtime (with someone who knows a heck of a lot more than I do, obviously). Nothing too hairy... don't want to trash the vehicle, but my Jeep definitely likes to break off of the asphalt.
Hmmm... Okay... here's the Deal: Looking for off road partner, male, 35-45... you pick the place, and bring the experience... I'll clean the trucks after we're done.

cremaster4 - sorry about the botched deal, but you'll be glad you got it done (even under new terms) when you're cruising around in a month or so.
drcsf & tnt - I've used a product call Dynomite to clean and Ultimate Tire Dressing on the black parts of our cars for the last 2 years. My dad lives next to a guy that sells this stuff wholesale to auto detailers. I'll try to find out if it can be bought retail if anyone is interested. The cleaner is the spray on, leave 60 seconds and hose off variety. It works really well and rarely requires any additional rubbing or scrubbing. I use it on the wheels, tires, and fenderwells. The tire dressing is what really rocks. It sprays on and has a wet look for about a day. It then tones down to a nice deep satin look and lasts at least 2 or 3 weeks before it starts to fade a bit. It holds up in rain, and doesn't attract dust or dirt like other products I've used. I'll snap some pics sometime for a comparison.
wranglerwanted - gas mileage is going to suck at best no matter how your Jeep is outfitted. tsjay is winning the mileage wars on this board and it looks like we're going to get 16-17 in ours (Sport, 5speed, w 30" and 3.73). We run about 2300rpm at 70mph so 5th gear really is an overdrive gear. Our gearing is the most agressive offered stock with the 6 cyl. A good comparison would be for someone that has the 6cyl w/ 3.07 rear end (can you get this w/ 5 speed?) to see what kind of rpms they run on the highway and to see if their mileage is significantly better. On the audio stuff... Unless you're hardcore into audio, the factory sub may be fine for you. I'm planning on replacing the factory speakers this weekend w/ BA FXs so I'll post after I'm done. I will leave the sub alone for now, but have read on JU where people have been able to fit an 8" into the center console and replace the factory. If I were to do that, I would go ahead and replace the sub amp at the same time. I don't think replacing the factory sub speaker would be advisable if you are going to drive it with the factory amp. If you replace both, don't even bother to order the sub. I think the console is the same, so you could install the sub and possibly a small amp in the factory tall boy console, and save the cost of ordering from the factory. The sub amp is supposedly in the console and I will confirm that this weekend as well. I haven't see any specs on it yet but to my ear, it probably plays down to 50Hz at best. It is "wooly" and really only fills in the mid bass. However, when the top is down, it's a decent system that will play loud enough to drown out the wind and road noise (but why would you want to do that). I've rambled, but I guess what I'm saying is "it's a Jeep". It wasn't built or designed to be a good venue for car stereo. If top notch sound is what you want, skip all the audio options and have a decent stereo shop hook you up after the fact. We are only replacing the factory dash and soundbar speakers because I don't want an invitation for anyone to steal anything. Who in their right mind would want a stock DC head unit?

And, well... ummmm **fidgets nervously** I don't actually own a Wrangler (but Mom does, and Dad an ancient Pioneer)... I own a 99 Grand Cherokee. So, I probably should not have chimed in on this board - just that getting the plastic molding clean is something I actually could talk about. (Technical topics are WAY over my blonde head... and having been in sales, the puppy at the Dealership where I bought mine didn't know what hit him... so I had an unfair advantage relative to price.) Anyhow, I digress... my point is that since I don't own a Wrangler, I really have no business posting to the Wrangler owners, and I certainly don't need to take up precious space revealing my GC 's name. You all are very nice, but would toss me out on my ear for being that presumptuous.

tnt - not so fast... You posted relevant Wrangler info; that make you part of the family. How about you petition for a GC board and we'll come visit you to see the name? Feel welcome to stay. A Wrangler in the family is a Wranger in the family. Many on this board were posting long before getting and even after getting rid of a Wrangler. I'm headed to VA in May and will looking into getting a source on the dressing.
twylie: Heya...I want to put in a subwoofer (didn't order the factory one) but like you, I don't want to replace the factory amp for theft reasons. I just want SOME bass. I barely have any as it is, even with the mini-equalizer set to full bass. A couple of friends have asked me, "Hey where did you get the live version of this song?" Not realizing it's the studio version with no bass. So mid-level would be plenty for me. But because I didn't get the wiring for the center console-mounted sub, will I still be able to get a sub in there?
Actually, I do not even own a Jeep product nor do I wish to, matter of fact what am I even doing on this board??? Anyway, try a product called "Black Magic" it is a clear silicone that comes in a spray bottle. It is as good as the UTD that our friend is touting but is available at any auto parts store. It lasts just about as long as well. As with any silicone based product, avoid getting it on glass and paint as it is difficult to get off Shoe polish? forget about it...it will never dry.
yellowman - sub I've seen a few people on JU that have retrofitted the factory sub and console. Since you already have the console, it might be better to just go with an aftermarket 8" sub and a small bridged amp that accepts speaker level input (the sub in ours is driven off the rear channel speakers, so you could do the same). A decent shop should be able to give you an estimate. I'd guess $40-50 for a driver, $100 for a small amp, plus fabrication of the mounting brakets to go in the factory console, probably $200-250 for everything which isn't much more than the factory sub and you'll probably have a better sounding system than those with the ordered sub. The wiring on the soundbar speakers runs under the sport bar covers so you should be able to have them tap into it where it starts up the sport cage. I don't think you'll be able to buy the factory sub and amp without the console. I'll look to see how ours is wired this weekend and will let you know what I find.
Tara - We own a 97 GC Laredo and just picked up my new 2001 TJ Sport Maxx three weeks ago, and I've been posting with this group for months...so don't worry about it, a Jeep is a Jeep and your family has 3 so welcome to the board and feel free to post anytime the mood hits. In the meantime, I now know what's been missing from this group the whole time...a female jeeper that is a neat freak (me too), wants desperately to off-road and can wear skirts and be sexy while doing all that??!! I may jump in my TJ and move to OR myself!!!!

I didn't mean to sound snotty a while back when I posted about pricing, I was just wondering why people didn't use the invoice pricing on Edmunds.com. I certainly want everyone to post questions, just thought the board is best for answering questions about the fair price over invoice, special fees, and trying to figure out the myriad of options available ("Can I order a Sahara with a 3.73 axle, ABS, and a subwoofer?" "Yes, but not with a white hard top.")
Mileage depends very much on tire size. When I had the stock 215s on I generally got 20mpg on the highway (4.0L and 5-speed). With my current tires (30" BFG A/Ts) it has dropped down to 17-18mpg.
I was wondering were everyone stores the rear windows, if they have full hard doors when they take the top down, do you store the plastic windows in the house or what. If yoyu romove the add a trunk, can you slip it in the truck, and under the seat? Has any one got the bikini top or bimini top for there wrangler. I was looking on Quad. they run around $80. I don't want to drill anthing down, Any reveives on the bikini top? Oh ya, all you hard toppers, I saw on Quad that they have a sail on the sail cloth soft tops, which are 99% similiaar to the 2001 wrangler soft top, the price is steep at $550, but it is worth it Oh well happy jeepin, And hello to all you new guys and gals.
For us... the rear side windows and back window stay in a bag at the house. We have half doors and if the weather is good, the upper halves stay at home in a bag as well. If there is a chance of rain, I put the upper door halves (in the bag) behind the rear seat, sitting upright. We don't have the Add-a-trunk so they fit there just fine. I placed a towel between the upper doors in the bag to help prevent them from rubbing together. My thought is that in case of any real rain, I can put the upper doors back in, raise the top without the rear windows and get home without getting completely soaked. The window bag ($38) is Steel Horse, and has felt like "leaves" in it to keep the windows from touching each other. It is fair quality. The half door bag ($50) is Bestop and is high quality. HTH.
yellowman - sub: You may be interested in trying to duplicate what I did with my sub - hopefully I can explain it clearly. I bought an 8" sub box, an 8" sub ( I bought a Polk Audio driver ) and a small amp ( I bought a Kenwood ). I mounted the amp to the outside back of the sub box and wired the sub to the amp with some short speaker wire. I then bought a heavy duty 3 wired extension cord - 15 feet long. I cut the plug off with about 18" of wire attached. I then attached the three wires from the plug to the amp pos, neg, and power terminals and mounted this permanently with electricians staples to the sub box. Next I ran the other cut end of the extension cord under the carpet up behind the glove box and then hard wired the three wires to the appropriate pos, neg, and power sources, making sure to keep these identical to the the wiring I did on the amp. This left the uncut end of the extension cord loose in the back of the Jeep. Finally I ran 12 foot RCA cables from the preamp/sub output of the head unit under the carpet to the back of the Jeep. Now what I have is a removeable sub box with amp that connects by simply plugging the two sides of the extension cord into each other and plugging in the RCA leads. This takes about 10 seconds, works fine, adds bass, and when I need the space removes quickly. Since there are three leads to power the amp, the 3 line extension cord is perfect. This way you can pick any amp, any sub, including 10", as long as the box fits behind the seat. You don't have to give up the console either. Cost me about $200 and took me under two hours. If I didn't explain it well and your interested post your questions. Good Luck no matter what route you go.
Tara: You are so right - sparkling wheels and tires can make an entire vehicle seems clean . . . and a clean vehicle can still look dull if the wheels/tires are missed. My Wrangler has blackwalls (no letters) but in my younger days (was 40 last October) I had a Trans Am with white lettered tires - used to lightly use S.O.S. steel wool pads and warm water to clean the letters - before all these car care products were available. The truth is our Wrangler lives in a garage - it's our third vehicle. Bought in March 98, it just broke 16,000 miles. I clean it even when it's clean, just for relaxation. Look like it did in the showroom. Sounds as though you've got a bit more of a challenge with your GC in Oregon. Maybe I should come out there . . . .
You (and Mom) should put that Wrangler through its paces. It's the world's biggest Tonka Toy. Get the top off, take off the doors, fold down the windshield and head for the beach. Its easy to take apart and put back together. No serious off roader here but I do put my mountain bike on the spare tire bike carrier and those two take me anywhere I want to go. No where else can you get a 4wd, 4 seat convertible for what the Wrangler costs - go for it. Craig

Jeep Jamborees have a trail rating of one-the least difficult, to 10–the most difficult. Levels of difficulty vary depending on trail conditions, but beginners and experts are welcome to participate. These are not competitive events – they are family oriented outings with fun for everyone.
Each Jeep Jamboree is limited to approximately 100 Jeep vehicles. Cost to participate is $225 per adult, $100 for children seven to 14, $75 for children three to six, no charge for children two and under. Some Jamborees have slightly higher registration fees due to additional program elements and park fees. All registration fees include meals.

Well, I finally did it. After 5 years of contemplation, I finally ordered "Louise"!
Did it all by phone and fax this afternoon. The dealer confirmed my order, faxed me an order confirmation with all the details and immediately called me back to confirm the VON #. I was so excited, that I thanked the dealer profusely. I then came to my senses and told her "wait a minute...why am I thanking you for robbing me of $1500??? We both had a good laugh about this, then and I asked her if she had to "use the bathroom again". (I still don't believe she ever went to the "manager" to get my price approved, I joked to her that she probably went to the rest room or had a cigarette!) I really enjoyed dealing with my sales consultant and she told me to call her if I had any questions or concerns about my order. She said that our relationship wouldn't end when I pick up my jeep, but I also expects me to contact her about servicing or problems with my purchase. I never mentioned the 60th anniversary order. I am just releaved that my Jeep is ordered.

Just got a response from DC concerning cut off dates-
QUESTION: I am looking to buy a Wrangler Sport 2001 within the next month. Is there a cut off date for special ordering a Jeep through a dealer?

Each DaimlerChrysler dealership is independently run and owned. Because of this their last day for ordering may be different. A tentative date for the last day to submit orders to the factory is 5/11/01. This date is subject to change.

First, I've got to say I picked this board because, in my simple estimation, there were nice, happy people posting here. Have you ever perused the GC boards? Unfortunately a lot of unhappy Jeepers over there. So, thank you yet again Craig, Trey, TJ and all the other residents of this electronic neighborhood for your warm and gracious welcome... I promise to be good **fingers crossed**
Craig... I've used steel wool too; Whitey's works much better (and by using a soft brush is lots easier on the manicure). And yes, while I hadn't thought about it, not really worth washing my Baby (okay Guys, there 'ya go, her name) unless I can do a really good job on those sexy hubs and the Don't-Even-Look-At-Me tires. **deep sigh** Can't tell you how much I love my Laredo... (my dream car too TJ). Heck, I don't even mind that the male species notice her before they do me.
Oh, and as perspective, since you all have swapped statistics... I am 30, single (never been married... no children). When not driving my Jeep, I am Operations Manager for a competitive vehicle manufacturer's 350 person Customer Assistance Center. While it drives them nuts I proudly park my Jeep in the executive stalls... they have begrudgingly admitted Baby is pretty as heck.
WOW Craig... a 98 with only 16K?? Baby is a 99... approaching 2 years old, and just over 40K. Of course, thanks to my lead foot I drive the **bats big brown eyes innocently at Steve and Drew** ummm... drive the stuffin' out of her. (She doesn't like to go much over 90... but I've had her 100-105 a time or two on the freeway... interesting ride at those speeds.) Aside from the rear differentials destructing on me at about 25K (which was caught at a routine oil change... Baby has never stranded me) the car has been as worry free and reliable as my Mom's and Dad's Jeeps. The mechanics at my Dealership spoil me rotten... they know my voice, and don't even tease me when I call saying my Baby is asking for some attention. They did insist I switch to synthetic oil because somehow (and I have no idea what they are referring to) Baby is experiencing "extreme driving conditions." A'hem... I can't help it she settles into a nice freeway cruise at 85. I'm telling you Darling men... she needs some serious mud and dirt.
**chuckles** You mechanic types would just die of laughter if you looked under the hood of Dad's Jeep... heck, could be a show: Terry the Toolman Does Jeeps. I swear it is dirt and duct tape holding that Pioneer together at 167K... and I do mean quite literally, duct tape. Holding a modified carburetor in place, and preventing leakage from a couple deteriorated hoses. When something stops working, Dad yanks it... and his Jeep keeps happily plugging along. Absolutely amazing.
A bike rack is on my wish list too Craig... have yet to come across a convenient, economic source for one that would fit in my square tow thingy.
And Craig, thanks for the suggestion, but Mama would have a fit if I took apart her hard-top Wrangler. More significant than the ensuing tantrum, is that hers is a 4.0L 5-speed manual transmission... something that I have yet to see the logic in. I'm one of those Gas=Go, Break=Stop kinda girls... Baby having the automatic version of her engine. How else would I be able to drink my latte's, file my nails, talk on the phone, change the radio, dig for a new tape, freshen my lipstick, and... Yes, I am teasing (sort of).
Hmmm... Tonka Toy. Brings back memories of hours in the sandbox... the bright yellow dumper my favorite. My two black dogs watching avidly, trying to understand the "game" because they wanted to play too, as I industriously moved mountains of dirt from one corner to the next. **giggles** Never could get my two "nannies" to eat my gorgeous mud pies.
CarGuy, thanks for the suggestion regarding Black Magic. I have tried that (you are right regarding the window/paint warning). I have really found basic Armour All best for the plastic trim, and have been happily using Tire Wet lately on my tires. Intend to employ Craig's karate concept (wipe on, wipe off) to see if that works any better for the cladding using the heavier silicone products. Also, very interested to try the Ultimate Tire Dressing Trey mentioned.

Greeting all. Good news. I may be able to pick up my Jeep early. Possibly in mid July and not the end of September! I just have to try to arrange delivery into Alabama instead of Colorado, and then "road trip" to my next duty assignment. I'll be passing through Texas to visit family, and then up to Colorado.
Which leads me to my questions. If I pick it up from a dealer in Alabama, do I have to register and pay taxes for Alabama? I'm actually a Texas resident and would love to put Texas plates on it. Can I get temporary tags in Alabama, and then go register it in Texas when I go there on leave a few weeks later? Where do I pay taxes? I think taxes in Alabama are cheaper than Texas. No matter what happens, by September, I will be in Colorado Springs and really start to have some fun. Especially with Texas plates!
I hope these questions aren't too confusing this morning.
drcsf - I really like the idea of using an extension cord to make a quick disconnect for a sub. Don't have any use for it currently, but it's filed away for future use. Thanks for the tip.
madman - Great news you may get it early. I'm sure the trip across TX and up to CO would be great! I looked into buying in AL as well and was told that you pay taxes in your state of registration (GA for me). There were not going to be any taxes owed upon delivery; I would have to work it out with the taxman when I got back into GA. A friend bought a Yukon in TN earlier in the year and this was his experience as well.

If you happen to have standing water on the passenger's side after a big rain or washing your TJ, there is a technical service bulletin (TSB) that will replace the seal and this is free from the dealer. If you have gauges that go dead or act interminettly there is also a TSB that will correct the fault connector in the wire harness and the TSB# 08-15-99 This is also a free.
i am thinking of buying a 90 wrangler s from a guy here at work. it has the 2.5 4 cylinder with 88k on the odometer. should i be worried about any major repairs in the near future such as timing belt and the like? any info would be helpful on this model year.
If it's the 4-cylinder, you shouldn't have too many problems to worry about. Stay away from the 1990 6-cylinders, they have the troublesome 4.2L engines and the disposable french tranny. Like any YJ, it'll beat you up on long road trips. I would consider changing the timing belt on any vehicle that old as a preventative measure. Have a mechanic look at it first, of course. The $40 or so is money well spent.

I called DC today to get an update on my order. They told me that my (yet unnamed) jeep will start down the line on the 2nd week in May. Not soon enough for me, but at least I can see some light in that tunnel. It doesn't help that the line is down all this week either. This is killing me. I'm not patient enough to order a vehicle!

Thanks for the offer. That sales tax is definitely cheaper than in Texas, which is 6.25%. But I will only be in Alabama for a temporary duty for a few weeks. Then I'll be visiting family in Texas for a few weeks, and then off to Colorado. Texas is my home of residence and I'd really like to have Texas plates, especially since I'll be in Colorado (It's a Texas thing, y'all)!
I think that if I really want those Texas tags, I'll have to pay in Texas. What I don't know is how much I will have to pay in Alabama, if I don't plan on registering it in Alabama.

You will probably have to pay the Texas sales tax in order to register in Texas. Some states honor each other's sales tax payments, so that if you pay an equal or higher sales tax in another state, they will credit you that amount in your own state. If you pay less in another state, they will only charge you the difference.
That's the way it works in Ky anyway. I don't know if there is such a thing as registering by mail, but if you are going to be in Bama for several weeks, your Jeep will most likely have to be registered somewhere. I don't think you can go that long without permanent tags.
Since you have internet access, why not look up the state governments of Bama and Texas and check with the officials via the net?
I went over to check out the Grand Cherokee board after tnt mentioned "a lot of miserable people over there." She wasn't kidding. The new JGCs seem to be self-destructing like crazy, just like the long-termer in the Edmunds fleet. Makes me wonder how my Wrangler has been so reliable, and I am guessing it's because it doesn't have all the failure-prone frills the JGCs have like power windows, doors, seats etc and because it seems to have the most reliable drivetrain: the 4.0L engine and the Select-trac part-time 4WD. And, of course, my religious maintainence regime.
If I didn't own a Jeep and wanted to eventually get one, I'd do it before they switch over to the new 3.7L V6 engines in the 2003 model year. That engine is based on the current V8 in the JGC that seems to be causing a lot of problems. The 4.0L straight-six is one of the most durable, proven truck engines around. Get'em while you can, boys and girls.
I was once active in the JGC boards, since I owned a '99 Laredo 4 X 4. Those boards truly ARE depressing!
I loved my Laredo as far as they way it looked, handled, and everything, but I know the reliability of it was VERY questionable.
I was having brake rotor problems, and, I swear, EVERYONE that had one was having the same problem! The rotors kept warping and having to be turned. The front rotors were replaced after they had been turned twice and were needing it the third time. As far as I know the new rotors were of the same design, so they would have proven no better.
Those are such beautiful, capable vehicles. It's just a shame they have no reliability!
I have been off the net for a few day and was wondering if anyone has figured out the modification to keep the cigarette lighter plug hot when the key is turned off..... I have a GAS that I like to keep going when the key is turned off as well as the old cell phone. Thanks. Oh yea, "Little Dude" is running well with no problems. I have 1500 miles on the odometer. I set the cruise control to 58 MPH on a flat stretch of hiway and was able to get 19.25 MPG. Not bad with the 3.73 differential......
That gas mileage sounds great. What are your normal driving conditions, and what kind of mileage are you getting under those conditions?
See my post 1773 where I asked the same question about the power outlet and 2001wrangler's response in 1774. I still haven't done anything about it yet.
Beach- this engine does not have a timing belt , it has a timing chain . Also the French Peugeot transmission was last used in 88 . it was replaced midyear with a the AX-15 . This 90 YJ has single point throttle body fuel injection . Not bad ,but not great. Goducks1 is correct about pre-91 model YJ's with the 4.2 L. STAY AWAY from them. The engine was good but carburetors and vacuum hoses are a big problem . They also used AMC's electronics, in 91 they went to Chryslers ,The 4.0 engine is much better . For your own protection take this Jeep to a knowledgeable mechanic and have him go over it to save any future problems . Spend a little money now to protect your wallet in the future.

All righty Gentlemen, as a female who doesn't so much as look under the hood of my 99 I6 Laredo (the mechanics at my Dealership take incredible care of me), I do actually have an opinion to render on this topic.
While I don't know a crankshaft from a camshaft, I am rather fastidious in the appearance of my vehicle. (Translation = neat freak.) Not only do I hand wash my Laredo (Champagne Pearl top half, gray lower panels), but also my Mom's 97 Wrangler (red paint with black body moldings)... when she's behaving.
To the cosmetic issues; I have found a little WD-40 to be the most effective at taking the bits of road tar off of the plastic (not to mention the bug guts off of the chrome grill); then some elbow grease with soap and water does well on the grime. Once the car is all washed and dried, I use Armour All on the grey panels, door handles, side view mirrors, etc. but Tire Wet on the black tire flares of my Mom's Wranger. Point to the Guys: As a girl who often wears skirts, I have found the Tire Wet facilitates dirt cling; first to the surface... and then to my clothes
My Jeep must not look too bad... I work at a call center for a competitive manufacturer, and more than one dyed-in-the wool loyalist has admitted my Jeep looks pretty darn good at almost 2 years old, left outside to the Oregon elements, over 40K miles, and a couple of oopsies.

I told my wife and two daughters (11 and 6 years old) that there are mothers and daughters in Oregon who love their Jeeps and keep them obsessively clean like I do. I then told my wife I was leaving her and moving (from Baltimore) to Oregon immediately. She then informed me that by the time she was done with me the only thing I would get to keep is the Tire Wet I now use to clean our Wrangler. So for now I'm staying in Maryland - of course I want to use the Wrangler this summer. But keep posting - these guys could use it.
Hmmm... now there is where us Fastidious Creatures differ. Sometimes I will just dress my tires... clean the chrome with wheel cleaner... Whitey's and a gentle scrub to make the white lettering on those Goodyear Tires look like they're trying to pop off... liberal coat of Tire Wet... back with a cloth to clean off any excess that hit the chrome. Just that alone (too cold in the winter to clean the whole truck sometimes) makes my Jeep look good as new... and decadently sexy. One of the things I love about Jeep is that they do not skimp dough when they tire their vehicles.
Too bad about the MD grounding... although I do understand your loyalty to your Jeep.
Hmmm... Okay... here's the Deal: Looking for off road partner, male, 35-45... you pick the place, and bring the experience... I'll clean the trucks after we're done.

cremaster4 - sorry about the botched deal, but you'll be glad you got it done (even under new terms) when you're cruising around in a month or so.
drcsf & tnt - I've used a product call Dynomite to clean and Ultimate Tire Dressing on the black parts of our cars for the last 2 years. My dad lives next to a guy that sells this stuff wholesale to auto detailers. I'll try to find out if it can be bought retail if anyone is interested. The cleaner is the spray on, leave 60 seconds and hose off variety. It works really well and rarely requires any additional rubbing or scrubbing. I use it on the wheels, tires, and fenderwells. The tire dressing is what really rocks. It sprays on and has a wet look for about a day. It then tones down to a nice deep satin look and lasts at least 2 or 3 weeks before it starts to fade a bit. It holds up in rain, and doesn't attract dust or dirt like other products I've used. I'll snap some pics sometime for a comparison.
wranglerwanted - gas mileage is going to suck at best no matter how your Jeep is outfitted. tsjay is winning the mileage wars on this board and it looks like we're going to get 16-17 in ours (Sport, 5speed, w 30" and 3.73). We run about 2300rpm at 70mph so 5th gear really is an overdrive gear. Our gearing is the most agressive offered stock with the 6 cyl. A good comparison would be for someone that has the 6cyl w/ 3.07 rear end (can you get this w/ 5 speed?) to see what kind of rpms they run on the highway and to see if their mileage is significantly better. On the audio stuff... Unless you're hardcore into audio, the factory sub may be fine for you. I'm planning on replacing the factory speakers this weekend w/ BA FXs so I'll post after I'm done. I will leave the sub alone for now, but have read on JU where people have been able to fit an 8" into the center console and replace the factory. If I were to do that, I would go ahead and replace the sub amp at the same time. I don't think replacing the factory sub speaker would be advisable if you are going to drive it with the factory amp. If you replace both, don't even bother to order the sub. I think the console is the same, so you could install the sub and possibly a small amp in the factory tall boy console, and save the cost of ordering from the factory. The sub amp is supposedly in the console and I will confirm that this weekend as well. I haven't see any specs on it yet but to my ear, it probably plays down to 50Hz at best. It is "wooly" and really only fills in the mid bass. However, when the top is down, it's a decent system that will play loud enough to drown out the wind and road noise (but why would you want to do that). I've rambled, but I guess what I'm saying is "it's a Jeep". It wasn't built or designed to be a good venue for car stereo. If top notch sound is what you want, skip all the audio options and have a decent stereo shop hook you up after the fact. We are only replacing the factory dash and soundbar speakers because I don't want an invitation for anyone to steal anything. Who in their right mind would want a stock DC head unit?

And, well... ummmm **fidgets nervously** I don't actually own a Wrangler (but Mom does, and Dad an ancient Pioneer)... I own a 99 Grand Cherokee. So, I probably should not have chimed in on this board - just that getting the plastic molding clean is something I actually could talk about. (Technical topics are WAY over my blonde head... and having been in sales, the puppy at the Dealership where I bought mine didn't know what hit him... so I had an unfair advantage relative to price.) Anyhow, I digress... my point is that since I don't own a Wrangler, I really have no business posting to the Wrangler owners, and I certainly don't need to take up precious space revealing my GC 's name. You all are very nice, but would toss me out on my ear for being that presumptuous.

Heya...I want to put in a subwoofer (didn't order the factory one) but like you, I don't want to replace the factory amp for theft reasons. I just want SOME bass. I barely have any as it is, even with the mini-equalizer set to full bass. A couple of friends have asked me, "Hey where did you get the live version of this song?" Not realizing it's the studio version with no bass. So mid-level would be plenty for me. But because I didn't get the wiring for the center console-mounted sub, will I still be able to get a sub in there?
Actually, I do not even own a Jeep product nor do I wish to, matter of fact what am I even doing on this board???
Anyway, try a product called "Black Magic" it is a clear silicone that comes in a spray bottle. It is as good as the UTD that our friend is touting but is available at any auto parts store. It lasts just about as long as well. As with any silicone based product, avoid getting it on glass and paint as it is difficult to get off
Shoe polish? forget about it...it will never dry.
I've seen a few people on JU that have retrofitted the factory sub and console. Since you already have the console, it might be better to just go with an aftermarket 8" sub and a small bridged amp that accepts speaker level input (the sub in ours is driven off the rear channel speakers, so you could do the same). A decent shop should be able to give you an estimate. I'd guess $40-50 for a driver, $100 for a small amp, plus fabrication of the mounting brakets to go in the factory console, probably $200-250 for everything which isn't much more than the factory sub and you'll probably have a better sounding system than those with the ordered sub. The wiring on the soundbar speakers runs under the sport bar covers so you should be able to have them tap into it where it starts up the sport cage. I don't think you'll be able to buy the factory sub and amp without the console. I'll look to see how ours is wired this weekend and will let you know what I find.

Mileage depends very much on tire size. When I had the stock 215s on I generally got 20mpg on the highway (4.0L and 5-speed). With my current tires (30" BFG A/Ts) it has dropped down to 17-18mpg.

You (and Mom) should put that Wrangler through its paces. It's the world's biggest Tonka Toy. Get the top off, take off the doors, fold down the windshield and head for the beach. Its easy to take apart and put back together. No serious off roader here but I do put my mountain bike on the spare tire bike carrier and those two take me anywhere I want to go. No where else can you get a 4wd, 4 seat convertible for what the Wrangler costs - go for it. Craig

Jeep Jamboree

Did it all by phone and fax this afternoon. The dealer confirmed my order, faxed me an order confirmation with all the details and immediately called me back to confirm the VON #.
I was so excited, that I thanked the dealer profusely. I then came to my senses and told her "wait a minute...why am I thanking you for robbing me of $1500??? We both had a good laugh about this, then and I asked her if she had to "use the bathroom again". (I still don't believe she ever went to the "manager" to get my price approved, I joked to her that she probably went to the rest room or had a cigarette!) I really enjoyed dealing with my sales consultant and she told me to call her if I had any questions or concerns about my order. She said that our relationship wouldn't end when I pick up my jeep, but I also expects me to contact her about servicing or problems with my purchase. I never mentioned the 60th anniversary order. I am just releaved that my Jeep is ordered.

I am looking to buy a Wrangler Sport 2001 within the next month. Is there a cut off date for special ordering a Jeep through a dealer?

Each DaimlerChrysler dealership is independently run and owned. Because of this their last day for ordering may be different. A tentative date for the last day to submit orders to the factory is 5/11/01. This date is subject to change.

First, I've got to say I picked this board because, in my simple estimation, there were nice, happy people posting here. Have you ever perused the GC boards? Unfortunately a lot of unhappy Jeepers over there. So, thank you yet again Craig, Trey, TJ and all the other residents of this electronic neighborhood for your warm and gracious welcome... I promise to be good **fingers crossed**
Craig... I've used steel wool too; Whitey's works much better (and by using a soft brush is lots easier on the manicure). And yes, while I hadn't thought about it, not really worth washing my Baby (okay Guys, there 'ya go, her name) unless I can do a really good job on those sexy hubs and the Don't-Even-Look-At-Me tires. **deep sigh** Can't tell you how much I love my Laredo... (my dream car too TJ). Heck, I don't even mind that the male species notice her before they do me.
Oh, and as perspective, since you all have swapped statistics... I am 30, single (never been married... no children). When not driving my Jeep, I am Operations Manager for a competitive vehicle manufacturer's 350 person Customer Assistance Center. While it drives them nuts I proudly park my Jeep in the executive stalls... they have begrudgingly admitted Baby is pretty as heck.
WOW Craig... a 98 with only 16K?? Baby is a 99... approaching 2 years old, and just over 40K. Of course, thanks to my lead foot I drive the **bats big brown eyes innocently at Steve and Drew** ummm... drive the stuffin' out of her. (She doesn't like to go much over 90... but I've had her 100-105 a time or two on the freeway... interesting ride at those speeds.) Aside from the rear differentials destructing on me at about 25K (which was caught at a routine oil change... Baby has never stranded me) the car has been as worry free and reliable as my Mom's and Dad's Jeeps. The mechanics at my Dealership spoil me rotten... they know my voice, and don't even tease me when I call saying my Baby is asking for some attention. They did insist I switch to synthetic oil because somehow (and I have no idea what they are referring to) Baby is experiencing "extreme driving conditions." A'hem... I can't help it she settles into a nice freeway cruise at 85. I'm telling you Darling men... she needs some serious mud and dirt.
**chuckles** You mechanic types would just die of laughter if you looked under the hood of Dad's Jeep... heck, could be a show: Terry the Toolman Does Jeeps. I swear it is dirt and duct tape holding that Pioneer together at 167K... and I do mean quite literally, duct tape. Holding a modified carburetor in place, and preventing leakage from a couple deteriorated hoses. When something stops working, Dad yanks it... and his Jeep keeps happily plugging along. Absolutely amazing.
A bike rack is on my wish list too Craig... have yet to come across a convenient, economic source for one that would fit in my square tow thingy.
And Craig, thanks for the suggestion, but Mama would have a fit if I took apart her hard-top Wrangler. More significant than the ensuing tantrum, is that hers is a 4.0L 5-speed manual transmission... something that I have yet to see the logic in. I'm one of those Gas=Go, Break=Stop kinda girls... Baby having the automatic version of her engine. How else would I be able to drink my latte's, file my nails, talk on the phone, change the radio, dig for a new tape, freshen my lipstick, and... Yes, I am teasing (sort of).
Hmmm... Tonka Toy. Brings back memories of hours in the sandbox... the bright yellow dumper my favorite. My two black dogs watching avidly, trying to understand the "game" because they wanted to play too, as I industriously moved mountains of dirt from one corner to the next. **giggles** Never could get my two "nannies" to eat my gorgeous mud pies.
CarGuy, thanks for the suggestion regarding Black Magic. I have tried that (you are right regarding the window/paint warning). I have really found basic Armour All best for the plastic trim, and have been happily using Tire Wet lately on my tires. Intend to employ Craig's karate concept (wipe on, wipe off) to see if that works any better for the cladding using the heavier silicone products. Also, very interested to try the Ultimate Tire Dressing Trey mentioned.

Which leads me to my questions. If I pick it up from a dealer in Alabama, do I have to register and pay taxes for Alabama? I'm actually a Texas resident and would love to put Texas plates on it. Can I get temporary tags in Alabama, and then go register it in Texas when I go there on leave a few weeks later? Where do I pay taxes? I think taxes in Alabama are cheaper than Texas. No matter what happens, by September, I will be in Colorado Springs and really start to have some fun. Especially with Texas plates!
I hope these questions aren't too confusing this morning.

madman - Great news you may get it early. I'm sure the trip across TX and up to CO would be great! I looked into buying in AL as well and was told that you pay taxes in your state of registration (GA for me). There were not going to be any taxes owed upon delivery; I would have to work it out with the taxman when I got back into GA. A friend bought a Yukon in TN earlier in the year and this was his experience as well.
cremaster4 - congrats on getting the order in. Sounds like an awesome Jeep. You'll be able to drive right over all those cabs.
tsjay - the plugs are still sitting on the workbench and should go in first thing Sat AM if I don't get to it one night this week. I'll be sure to post if it helps.

I think that if I really want those Texas tags, I'll have to pay in Texas. What I don't know is how much I will have to pay in Alabama, if I don't plan on registering it in Alabama.

That's the way it works in Ky anyway. I don't know if there is such a thing as registering by mail, but if you are going to be in Bama for several weeks, your Jeep will most likely have to be registered somewhere. I don't think you can go that long without permanent tags.
Since you have internet access, why not look up the state governments of Bama and Texas and check with the officials via the net?

If I didn't own a Jeep and wanted to eventually get one, I'd do it before they switch over to the new 3.7L V6 engines in the 2003 model year. That engine is based on the current V8 in the JGC that seems to be causing a lot of problems. The 4.0L straight-six is one of the most durable, proven truck engines around. Get'em while you can, boys and girls.
I loved my Laredo as far as they way it looked, handled, and everything, but I know the reliability of it was VERY questionable.
I was having brake rotor problems, and, I swear, EVERYONE that had one was having the same problem!
The rotors kept warping and having to be turned. The front rotors were replaced after they had been turned twice and were needing it the third time. As far as I know the new rotors were of the same design, so they would have proven no better.
Those are such beautiful, capable vehicles. It's just a shame they have no reliability!

That gas mileage sounds great. What are your normal driving conditions, and what kind of mileage are you getting under those conditions?
See my post 1773 where I asked the same question about the power outlet and 2001wrangler's response in 1774. I still haven't done anything about it yet.
