What incentives are currently out there? Looking at getting one in the DC area. Are they selling these vehicles below invoice? Looking more specifically at the Yukon XL's.
I found a seat belt recall for 2001 Suburbans on the TrailerLife website. Naturally, when we called the dealer they knew nothing about it. I thought that I would pass this information along.
GM Recalls 10,000 Trucks and SUVs
General Motors is recalling about 10,000 model-year 2001 full-size pickup trucks and sport-utility vehicles to replace defective seat belts. The recall covers certain 2001 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra full-size extended-cab pickups, plus Chevrolet Tahoe, Suburban, GMC Yukon, Yukon Denali, Yukon XL, and Yukon XL Denali models.
Some of the recalled vehicles may have a faulty component in their second- and third-row safety-belt assemblies that can fail. Dealers will inspect the vehicles' safety-belt retractors to determine if they have fractured or are at risk of breaking, and will replace them if necessary for free.
GM sent notification letters to owners of the affected vehicles.
After installing the Quad beam headlight conversion kit, has anyone installed higher wattage bulbs ( 80/100 watt) without hurting the plastic lens? According to the bulb sellers, the wiring and lens can take the extra wattage in normal high/low mode but they are not sure with the Quad kit installed. Thanks for your help.
I took my white (6 passenger) and pewter (9 passenger) Suburbans on a long road trip to Canada and back the first of July. The pewter Suburban was towing a kayak trailer with 17 kayaks going up and 20 kayaks coming back. I got just under 20 mpg on the white and a little over 12 on the pewter. 5.3L engines, 2WD, climate package, 3.73 rear end, base models.
My 2001 YXL 2500 4X4 stickered at $45,500. I ordered it with the GMO plan and got it for $38,200. If you really want to see the price breakdown, go to the dealer and tell them you have a brother that works for GM, and you wante to spec out a new Suburban. Hope the info helps.
I have about 5k on my 2001 Yukon XL, should I go to a synthetic oil? Do most people change the synthetic oil less often? I have heard that if you put synthetic oil in an older car, it could cause leaks, what about new vehicles. Thanks for advise.
I just bought a 2001 Yukon for my wife. I am happy with all aspects of the deal *except* the truck has Firestone Wilderness LE tires on it. I am frankly stunned that they would have anything Firestone on a new car. I pressed the dealer for different tires, but they wouldn't go for it.
These are brand new (50 miles) 265 70 R16 tires that I will happily part with if anyone is interested. I'm sure they are fine tires, as my dealer insisted. All the same, I went straight done to NTB and bought a set of Michelin Cross Terrains, just for my own peace of mind...
I just saw the prices for the 2002 Z71 Suburbans. They are $3500.00 higher than 2001. When I priced my 2001, I found the Z71 to be $500 less than a comparable LS. I knew it wouldn't stay that way for long! If you are looking for a Z71, I would look for a 2001 before they are gone. The main difference in 2002 pricing in that the cassette player, rear seat audio controls, trailer towing package, and convience package are now standard. All of these options don't add up to $1000. I also noticed that the power seats are 8-way rather than 6-way (also for the LS).
now you got me curious.. where did you find the '02 Z71 'bourbon prices??... Edmunds/Kelley Blue Book/ M-S Carpoint sites all no good as of yet on '02 Subn prices..
.. glad I found my White '01 Z71 'bourbon a few weeks ago for the price I wanted to pay..Invoice plus $98 minus $1K loyalty Subn owners certificate.... minus $1K Dealer Cash Incentive..plus I turned in my old '99 Subn with 49K miles on it thru GMAC special lease turn in with no penalties/remaining 9 payments wiped out..... my local dealer punched in to locate one..I watched him do it.. supposedly tried for three more weeks and couldn't come up with any in White ..June 30th Loyalty Certificate date was running out... I'd rather get it from him locally but couldn't produce....I located two on my own in White within 100 miles of my area thru GM Buypower and phone calls on my own...grabbed the loaded one .. only thing missing is moonroof..can't have everything..... so much for Chevy's internal locator system... funny, just got a Black LT for my wife from the local dealer in late April... he blew the Z71 deal...
I just mounted a hood protector/bug guard on my 01 Suburban. I got it from the GM dealer. It attached with little effort using the existing holes underneath the hood. It looks like a quality product.
One problem I noticed. I now hear a high pitched whistle when the vehicle gets up around 40 mph. I would have thought the guard would have been designed to avoid this.
Any suggestions on how to get the noise to stop? I can imagine the local GM parts dealer is not going to want to take this thing back.
I have a 2001 YXL with 8.1....When the pesky little light came on (4,000 miles) for an oil change I switched to Mobil 1 (5-30). I will be doing this about every 6 weeks (4,000 miles). When the warranty expires I will probably stretch it out to every 8,000 miles. I figure changing the oil every 6 weeks will cost me about $700 per year.
I haven't noticed any performance gains or leaks. In my 1992 k2500 Suburban I changed the oil (non-synthetic) every 16,000 miles, no problems in 250,000 miles.
I'm trying to turn over a new leaf on this vehicle.
I've had a couple of occurrences of heat coming out of the rear A/C on my 2001 Tahoe. It has the computer climate control. Anyone else experienced this? I haven't had a chance to see under what exact circumstances it occurs.
I installed a Bug deflector (not Lund), and we now have pretty loud wind noise along the top of hte windshield. Sounds like the rubber window gasket (which is not glued down) is flapping rapidly against the truck. I tried gluing it down with some silicon, but it did not help at all. I have no idea other then aerodynamics, what is causing the noise. I plan to remove it and to find a Lund dealer that will let me try one with return privledges...joe
02 YXL prices are now online at kbb.com. Spec'ed out the way I'd want it, it looks like the '02 comes in at $300 more than the '01 at MSRP. Less than 1% increase.
I was looking at 2500 4x4 and the first thing that caught my eye was the new option listed as HD transmission, available only with the 8.1. That could be good news since the '01 8.1 has some sort of torque limiter in 1st gear to stop it chewing up the old 4L80E transmission IIRC. Interestingly, the torque of the 8.1 is listed slightly higher at 460 on the '02. Don't know how accurate that is though.
The other thing I took note of was that the rear A/C controls are no longer deleted when you get a sunroof - merely downgraded from auto to manual. That would be a good thing if true - I always thought it was kind of feeble that they couldn't find somewhere else to put the rear A/C controls.
A better trans and rear A/C controls for only $300 more seems like a pretty good deal (at least relatively) if I'm reading it right.
I thought the only way you could get the 8.1 was with the optional 5 speed allison trans. I test drove one before buying my 6.0 4L80E combo. Dealer told me that was the only way you can get it. Plus you have to get Autoride with the 8.1, only way it comes in a Yukon XL/Suburban according to 4 different dealers I talked to. So I guess if you want the 8.1 they force you to get the 5 speed allison trans and Autoride suspension.
8.1 liter engine takes 7 quarts. I keep one extra quart in the car as a spare-sometimes add it prior to towing.
My per quart price is 26 cents higher than yours. I guess I could shop better.
I gave up working on cars after I was struck by lightning(ouch!) working on a Saab Sonnet III.
My neighbor owns the shop where I get my oil changed and I like the people who work there. I got to know them quite well driving the wheels off the 1992 Suburban (250,000miles)
I have a 3/4 pick-up with the 6.o. Truck has the nasty engine knock on start that is common to the pickups. Thinking about getting rid of it for a suburban. Is the engine knock also happening to the Suburban line. Haven't seen any post about it..Would like any feed back or comments. Thanks
Ever think about getting your oil changed at the dealership? They should carry mobil one since thats what the vettes run on. Should be a bit cheaper also. A guy up in canada on another board pays about $50 for a mobil 1 oil change and thats canadian dollars
At least the $700 makes a little more sense after you explained it thanks
My 2000 6.0 is fine on a cold start. I sometimes get a little knock on warm start, but a push of the gas gets rid of it.
If you follow the boards, GM now says the problem in pickups has something to do with piston design, and while annoying does no engine damage (of course they would say that) but I agree. As long as the knock goes away within about 30 seconds, I don't think it is harmful.
I have had alot of Dodge trucks which did this. In fact it was even in the owners manual that lifter knock during the first 30 seconds was normal. They blamed it on hydraulic lifters getting up to pressure.
I had a valve tick for 225,000 miles on my first Chryco slant 6.
So, anyway, if it knocks for 30 seconds or less I would just drive it. We all get so used to quiet trucks that we sometimes forget it is a mechanical device, it makes noise. (no offense intended, I have read some other forums where folks are really hot about this and I tend to think....relax it's a truck engine!).
Thanks for the input, are you doing any towing ? I'm towing a 7000lb travel trailer with my current set-up in the truck, just don't have the interior room that a burb would have , with all the kids. Thanks.......
I have a '01 suburban and have noticed a problem with the overdrive gear (4th) not kicking back in after passing etc. It seems to occur on the freeways after driving 20-60 miles. It will drop out due to acceleration or breaking, and not come back in. I then have to stop the vehicle, turn it off, and start it again. It will then work (i.e. shift into fourth gear) for a while. Of course, the dealer can't make it happen and there are no error codes on the 'puters. He did reset the computer adaptive shifting routines. I am going to put it on the freeway and see if it does it tommorrow. Has anyone else seen anything like this?
The 8.1 liter motor takes 6.5 qts of oil per the owner's manual. The old 7.4/454 took 7 qts. Transmission- The 8.1 on the Suburban/YXL does NOT come with the Allison transmission, though it does on the HD pickups. Would be curious to know what the HD transmission for '02 means.
You're right, after I posted I was at the dealer, and asked them about it. No 5 speed trans on the YXL or Suburban, but you DO have to get Autoride. The salesman did not have any info on HD trans for the 8.1, on the 02 models, and he is calling around to find out if the 5 speed will be available. I would love to see the 5 speed Allison behind the 6.0L and 8.1L engines in the YXL and Suburbans. I know it would do wonders for the mileage, and durability of the truck. I don't understand why it's available in the truck and not the suv' s. Yet another GM afterthought that fell to the wayside I guess.
I was told when I bought my 2001 Suburban with the 8.1 by at least two different people that the Allison transmission was to bulky for the Suburban frame and body. That is the reason for the GM 4 SPD only option. I to am curious what they have changed for 2002 to make it the HD option.
Edmunds just posted the '02 prices for the Z71 'bourbon.. you're absolutely right about grabbing one while you can..
glad I got mine when I did with those two-$1K incentives I had last month.. my White '01 Z71 subn listed -- MSRP at $41826 .. the only option I didn't have was the moonroof.. can't have everything .. found the one I wanted luckily in stock .. ....at Marchant Chevy in Ravenel, SC.. http://www.marchantchevy.com/ last I looked they still show a silver( Pewter) one in stock when doing a 'search --inventory' off their site..
...an '02 Z71 Subn with those same oprions ( Liftgate, rear buckets, 4.10 rear, ) and the other options that are now standard like the rear audio controls. according to the Edmunds site will now be listed for $44930 with the upgrades in power seats you mentioned.. the way I see it.. I got a bargain...and what turns out to be , the way it looks, a rare model especially in a White Z71 'bourbon for '01 model year...... I'm happy..
There must be something additional coming in the 2002 Z71 Suburban that has not yet been announced. When I compare the prices of 2001 vs 2002 of other Suburban models (LS,LT,2500LT) the difference is usually only a few hundred dollars. I wonder if the 2002 Z71 is getting the 6.0L like the Denalis... Does anyone else have any ideas on what could justify the big price increase?
Does anyone have any recommendations for a hitch model that swings away so that one can access the trunk via the liftgate. Needs to carry 4 bikes (only 2 adult bikes). So far I have only seen the Yakima Terragate model. This model swings to the side of the car, but I seem to remember that at least 1 other manufacturer has a model that swings out directly behind the car and down. Which is preferrable? What about Thule, GM or any others? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
looks like maybe Chevy just found a money-maker and trying to capitalize on it???.... who knows..... the only thing that was not included with my '01 Z71 Subn was the lights they had listed in the brochures in the special roof rack on the back... maybe it'll be included on the '02 Z71.. but it obvously wouldn't justify that much of a price difference..
..maybe they are just trying to 'close the gap' between the Z71 Subn and the GMC Yukon XL Denali.. there is currently about a $7K price spread. albeit a different targeted customer ??
that special Z71 roof rack and other items were included on the LT Suburban they had showing at the April-2000 ( 15 months ago) NY Auto Show that I went to.... they said it wasn't going to be included on any newer models in the near future.. they ' fibbed'..
Nope. Don't tow yet. Thinking about getting a pop up though.
How do you like the 6.0 for towing 7K lbs? I have heard alot of complaints about the 6.0's towing abilities (over, say, 5000 lbs). Some have even traded the 6.0 for the 8.1. Just curious what you think. My truck feels like it has the power to do it, but 7000+ lbs is alot of weight.
I noticed today that under the left rear plastic vent on the corner, it looks like the paint is actually peeling on my 2001 burb. It is hard to notice since it is in the very crack were the plastic and sheet metal meet. Has anyone else had similar problems? Also if I take it to the dealer what will their fix be? Ellison5
I don't even know how or where to begin. I have a 2000 Suburban LT. w/ 23,000 miles. It makes a vibrating noise when traveling at very low speed. (eg. going though a drive in window, McDonalds) Sounds like it's coming from the exhaust, maybe. I have taken it into the dealership about 6 times, they have heard it while I drive the car. But for some reason they cannot get it to make the noise when they drive it. They say noone else has ever complained about this noise, they have even searched the Chevy data base. It sounds like a tin can going down the road.... so I paid $38,000 for a tin can. They did change out the catalytic converter, but it didn't help. It tries to stall when you start the vehicle and put it into gear. It uses at least a quart of oil every 1,000 miles and the computer thing tells me to check oil pressure and just recently told me that I need an oil change after 1,000 miles. I have also had 4 window motors replaced since I bought it last May 2000. The moon roof leaks, but I was told that was the way it is designed..nothing can be done. The traction control turns off when you drive it in the rain. (I would think that would be the time that you would need it the most) You can't get it back on unless you turn the engine off.
Has anyone else had any of these problems?? I really need some imput. The dealership won't help me much at all.
I've had no problems towing 32 ft. 7500 lb. travel trailer with my 2001 6.0 with 4.1 axle. I tow in tow haul mode, overdrive, and cruse. Take it out of cruse on inclines.
Don't have any problems with the 6.0 /3.73 gears towing. Just take my time and watch everyone pass me. I usually tow around 60-65mp,and get around 10mpg. If I get the burb I will probably go with the 6.0/4.10 gears just to have the 2000lb increase in tow rating. Burb has more seats to fill, so that means extra weight for the in-laws to ride along. I get around 15mph without the trailer on the hwy, dont think that I could get that with the 8.1.
I purchased a bike rack that holds 4 bikes and swings down and back. I have found it to be very easy to use and quick to install. It is made by Holly wood engineering. The phone # is 310-516-8600. It was carried by various bike shops in the So. Calif. area. I hope this helps.
I don't know why they don't offer this combo on the YXL and Burbs. The frame is different, shorter, but the body, and motor mounts are the same as a 1500HD crew cab Silverado. Only thing I can figure is that fuel tank placement and size make it unfeasible for one reason or another. It would then be a real tough one to beat in the towing category, not to mention improve the fuel mileage. I hear that Ford is beefing up the Excursion to get a higher towing capacity than Chevy/GMC.
8.1 with 3.73 axle ratio--I get about 8.5-9.0 mpg pulling my 35'/9500# travel trailer( and I don't have to watch people going by since I can usually keep with traffic at 65-70mph). I get 14-15mpg on the interstate without the trailer and about 12mpg around town. If you are going to be pulling a trailer above 7000#, then I think the only choice is the 8.1. The 6.0 can handle anything under that, but I don't the mileage penalty with the 8.1 is that much greater, and you have much better towing capability.
The 8.1L Burb/YukXL is great for towing - plenty of power and very stable. The 2002 model should be even better with the improved 4L85E transmission (the 2001's used the 4L80E). It is real nice to be able to tow at the prevailing speed and pass others with ease instead of being passed (this makes for a much happier travelling experience).
In terms of mileage - you will get something between 5mpg to 15mpg depending on how and where you drive. The mpg is very dependent on the terrain, elevation, and how fast you like to go. The worst I ever recorded was ~5mpg (pulling 7500lb trailer at 82mph in hilly terrain with a strong headwind). For what it is worth, I typically I see 9-11mpg (7mpg towing).
We're going to be buying in about 6 weeks and wanted to hear if you have any input on weather to go with a 2001 or a 2002. Does anyone know if there will be any new features on the 2002 LT and how much over invoice I should expect to pay? Also, how much under invoice do 2001s usually go for this time of year?
Our Chevy Dealer performed a dealer locate on a 2001 Suburban LS (with the upgrade so it is comparable in many ways to the LT) and when they found one we were told it was in "in transit" and was not at the other dealer's lot yet. However, when we had looked on GM PowerBuy's web site it listed the vehicle as being at that dealer. When we went to the lot we didn't see it either. We are wondering if it is still possible for a 2001 to be "in transit" yet? I realize the final assembly is in Mexico and we live in the North East. Also, is it possible for a dealer to find out exactly where that vehicle is and when it will arrive? Thank you in advance, kara

I haven't noticed any performance gains or leaks. In my 1992 k2500 Suburban I changed the oil (non-synthetic) every 16,000 miles, no problems in 250,000 miles.
I'm trying to turn over a new leaf on this vehicle.
52 wks in a yr divided by 6 wk intervals is 8.7 oil changes a yr round off to 9.
Oil change using mobil one costs me around $30 so ill say $35 in your case
That comes out to be ($35*9) $315.00
How did you come up with $700?
8 quarts Mobil 1 $39.95 with sales tax(8.8%).
Installation of oil and check fluids etc. $25.94.
$65.89 each change X 9 changes = $593.01
$700 number was figuring 10 per year. 40,000 divided by 4,000 mile intervals.
Installation of oil and check fluids etc. $25.94.
INSTALLATION? Dont you do it yourself? Also 8 quarts?????????????????? What size engine? I know the 4.8,5.3,and 6.0's only take 6 qts.
$26 for a case of mobil 1 (6 qts) here plus 5% tax.
$700 still seems very high.
My per quart price is 26 cents higher than yours. I guess I could shop better.
I gave up working on cars after I was struck by lightning(ouch!) working on a Saab Sonnet III.
