Quite often the DTC code stored-if you are lucky- on your trucks computer, will not tell you what part to replace. It simply tells the repair person what is being affected. The DTC will lead to info displayed on a diagnostic tree. This tree can be found in the GM Service Manual, a CD set or a service computer. Of course a good tech will often short cut, due to his/her previous experience. They do work for their money. Nothing can beat effective training, experience and a dyed in the wool service tech that loves his/her job. ( A tech or whatever they are called today )
There are no exterior design changes scheduled for 2003 on the Sub or XL. However, both vehicles will have a totally redesigned interior that includes (as an option) entertainment system, redesigned dash, new stereo head unit and a few other styling differences on the inside. The new interior was shown inside all of the vehicles at the auto shows the past few months.
The 2004 vehicles will get redesigned sheetmetal. The Suburban takes on a Trailblazer type front end look. The GMC stays pretty much the same to the untrained eye. Devotees will notice the grill takes on a more squatty stance.
It will be available in the mid to late 2003 model run. You can get it on both 1/2 and 3/4 ton models, but not in the Tahoe/Yukon, only the big boys for now.
means that I just decided to look again at a 03 NAV. This feature would have decided in favor of the Yukon. Have to start to monitor that other site. Luckily cost is not a problem - features and options mean all.
I am curious as to your hasty decision not to purchase a Tahoe if 4 wheel steering is not an option. Is the turning radius that much better in the Nav? In my own research I think it is a lot less maneuverable than a Tahoe. If you talk to any suspension shop you can ask who makes the best most durable suspension in the biz and they will say GM. Are you just an option crazed person or are you interested in the end product quality? I am not trying to slam you, just wondering why one option not being available would make you decide to jump the fence.
ref, previous post "Lost "Cruise Contrl" 5.7L 4x4 75Kmi Has anyone had a DIY fix of tracing or repairing the lost Cruise Control.? I tried the simple Chiltons test.... The dealer is not a compssionate as I figured & Any Help would be appreciatred. Thanks in Advance. Drej
I own a 2001 Denali XL. When I made my purchase, I did look at Ford's products (Expedition, Navigator, Excursion). They did not come close to the GM products in Comparison. Now, with the redesign of the Expedition and Navigator, I expect the Ford products will be much more competitive and certainly should be looked at. The Sequoia was simply underpowered for my needs and had to be ruled out.
I have a 2001 3/4 ton Suburban K2500HD with the same engine/rear end combo. I get 12 MPG city and 14 MPG highway, on a regular basis. This is after 22,000 miles. I do, however have a miss in the engine more of a surge on upgrades. Need to have this looked at.
the 4 wheel steering item, it is many decisions made by GM lately. They no longer offer two tone trucks - have owned four Chev. Burbs - all were two tone. They removed the spare from inside to underneath. I carry a lot of eqpt. for service purposes. The small amount of space that was taken up by the spare tire has never been a problem. Don`t need a rolling BOOM BOX - I think they had to get rid of the spare just so they could put that big speaker in its place. They restrict some options to try to sell lift gates don`t want - don`t need. Don`t appreciate reading that they don`t want to -or can`t - service a truck just because there are no DTC`s set. Like when the engine cuts out on a 65 mph expressway. There are test sets that can capture the code. Won`t go into the three other long term problems tied into the computer that they can`t find answers to. I finally came to the conclusion that GM no longer can provide a truck that is reliable and offers the full range of options that I want. Again for me - I want my truck my way - not some bundled jumble of options that GM wants me to take. ( Yes I`m a option Nut ) Has nothing to do with money I can write a $65,000 check today for a vehicle that has the options I want. Will look at three or so SUV`s to see which comes closer to my pics. At this time it is not likely to be GM. Would have been willing to pay 2,000 for 4 wheel steering and 1,000 more for real wheel independent suspension like on the new 2003 Fords. They don`t seem to be offering much on the new 2003 - just some gingerbread on the inside that doesn`t turn me on. Same old body, same old colors and no two tone, as far as I heard.
All manufactures are packaging options and not allowing them to be selected individually. It is partially done to reduce manufacturing costs. Don, I think you should look at the Sequoia as well, but Toyota packages options more than the domestics do. The GM SUVs faired well to the redesigned Fords in the one comparison i read.
It really sounds like you have had dealership problems to me. All the dealers any more don't want to fix something unless a code is set, no matter what brand car/truck you get. When people find a shop with a mechanic that is good and thorough they stick there. Like they say an angry customer is going to tell an average of 9 people about a bad experience with a shop and only 3 people with a good one, so you do the math, bad reports get out more than good ones. The 2 tone paint is still available on pick ups, just not on SUVs, I don't know why, I just know that they don't. I am willing to bet the the Mexico plant can't make 2 tone, and they want to make as many there as possible for money reasons. If I knew that 2 tone paint would have got me and American built truck I would have ordered it like that. As far as I have seen the only option you can not get with barn doors is the 3rd row seat, and if you are hauling equipment the 3rd row in a Tahoe is not going to be used that often, so what's the big deal? I like the tire under the truck, I use every inch of space in the cargo area of my YXL, and wouldn't want to unpack a lot of stuff on a trip to get at the spare. The speaker they put in is not that big, it's only 8" so no where near the size of a tire. I too am an option nut, but elected not to order a few options that were available to me, like the 8.1L engine, 2nd row buckets, and 4.10:1 rear end, and I don't miss them one bit. In my opinion the Nav is a really plastic feeling truck with a boring dash that they just slapped some wood grain trim on. GM is planning on changing the noses on the SUVs in '04 and you should like what you see, but it is going to be the same from the doors back. I figure 2010 will be the next drastic body change for the big SUVs. Hell if CAFE is increased SUVs as we know them might not even exist then.
I live in the DC metro area (no. va) and would like to know if anyone there has any good experiences with the local dealers? Also, if you don't mind sharing how much you paid for your truck.
Without checking though my recent issues, it was Car and Driver or Motor Trend. It was probably one of the 2 most recent issues. I hope that helps. If you still can't find it, I will try to look for more details. I believe the actual comparison was the Escalade vs the Navigator and maybe the ML500.
Invoice, minus rebates. I did not feel like dickering over the other costs (but I got them back later -- FWIW).
Look do yourself a favor get preapproved with a people first loan, so that you can make out the check in the dealership. One less thing to deal with.
You should be able to get this deal (or possibly even better) just about anywhere. It is not uncommon, despite what some around here say, there is plenty of profit for the dealer at that price, if you consider the time saved by not dickering (among other things).
Hi, I am considering a larger SUV. I think the Yukon or Suburban will be a nice fit, but I cannot find these with a Key pad type keyless entry. Does GM not have this key pad as an option? Can a key pad be done as an after market option? Has any one done an aftermarket key pad?
Our main goal is to allow the vehicle to idle with our dog inside when it is hot or very cold outside.
Run it through to make sure, but the trade in price I got was around $16,400, and private sale was $17,600. I could have your options and other info wrong, so try it and see. The site is pretty helpful.
My GMC 4x4 @ 80K had started experiencing the AIR BAG dash warning light on. It started all of the Sudden at months ago at 79K miles for no reason. "Not on all the time", but its more often now. Does anyone have a cause for this. I have no way to read the codes for now, unless there's an function I'm unaware of? any Ideas? Does this mean its not functional, Dealers been "No" help...Just want$ as its out of Warranty ...Help....Air bag baffled. Drej~
I have another transmission question. On my '99 2500 4x4 with 7.4 and 3.73 with 50,000 miles I notice a problem with the transmission between first and second gear. It does not happen all the time or at any certain interval, speed, or location. The truck starts out fine but when it shifts to second it jumps back and forth between first and second, some times when making a turn and speeding up I notice it, and 2 times it has just jumped back and forth between gears until I dropped it into first and then shifted it up and from then on it worked find. I just had the transmission flushed and the fluid changed at 50,000 miles. The old fluid was dark and did have a burned smell. The rear heater control valve was leaking so the cooling system might have been running hotter than normal. I have had this truck for 6 months and this problem has happened less than 10 times. It makes me wonder about the truck since I bought it used, first used truck in 20 years and it makes wonder if I bought a problem. Has anybody else had this problem or heard it if it in other GM vehicles.
have noticed tires wearing and 'cupping' on the inside of both front tires on my wife's K1500 4wd '01 Subn with 15K miles on it... tires getting noisery too..
the tires are cupping/scalloping ONLY on the inside of the tread..on both front tires... those tires are Firestones that came with it.....it has 15K miles on it.. mainly over the road driving.. 6 trips to Florida from NC in a year
has anyone had this show up on theirs?? any Tech Service Bulletins that anyone is aware of before I bring it in to the local Chevy dealer..
I also have an '01 Z71 Subn with 13K miles on it.. today I checked the tires more closely on my Z71.. they are starting to do the same as on her 'burban...I had noticed the same noise.. it has 13K miles on it.. those tires are Goodyear 17" standard issue..
have had a number of Suburbans, Expeditions, Explorers over the past 9 years.. never had this problem before.. let alone on basically two identical trucks...
thought maybe others were experiencing same.. ??
both trucks are riding straight-on.. not pulling .. not drifting.. not wobbling or vibrating in any way.. the only thing that is noticeable is that the tires are very noisy( for obvious reasons)...
have an appt with the local Chevy dealer this morning for wife's truck... we shall see??..I
can just imagine the soft-shoe shuffle they'll try to dump on me..
I now have 18000 miles and my emergency brake no longer holds. The dealer pulled the wheels and said the emergency brake shoes (separate drum on the rear hub) need replacement. About $200 - WOW. Their explanation is someone drove with the brake on. "... its a very thin pad, and even just once can do it..." Can I really believe that GM could have such a flimsy design on a truck?
I took it up with GM customer service, and the AVM - area vehicle manager got involved. He says the wear on the pads was even and the brake must have been left on. In the report, he claims to have seen the brakes personally to make his judgment. Only problem there is the truck was not at the dealer on the date he reported to be there. I pointed this out to the GM customer service supervisor, who was reluctant to be available, but she said that's it, case closed.
History of the emergency brake:
> Since the truck was new (last July), the brake always had to be depressed low to the floor to hold. Because the truck was new, I thought this was normal. > Most of the about 18,000 miles are long trips, e.g. DC to Florida. > It was after my last trip, about 1800 miles (all highway) that the brake went from being low but holding to push it to the floor with no hold.
My feeling is that the brake had some sort of factory problem/defect that allowed the pads to touch even though the emergency brake pedal was not engaged. Logically, if the car was driven with the brake on slightly, assuming the noticeable light was overlooked, wear to the pads would be to a certain level. It would probably require several/many episodes like this to wear the pads out - on a truck one would hope so! The problem with that scenario is I have not driven with the brake on.
This is my first Suburban after two consecutive Tahoes - and I never had this problem in the past on these or any cars for that matter.
I'm appalled by this problem, and even worse, GM attitude and unethical behavior in their report. If I can find a pattern, I taking this to Channel 7 News Investigative Team. It's a dangerous situation among other things.
Has anyone else had this problem? Please post or reply to my direct email - acmarcus@fuelmanagement.com
I had a similiar problem, the parking brake would not hold. The dealer made some sort of adjustment, but it didn't help. the dealer then replaced the parking brake shoes and possibly some other components and the brake holds now. In addition, if you even start to ride with the brake on, there is a chime sound. So, I doubt anyone could ride witht he brake on for long. All repairs were done under warranty, no questions asked. I forget the exact mileage, but I am guessing somewhere between 10-15K.
I'd print the above post and anything else out from chevytalk.com and other sites like it pertaining to your problem also call a couple of local dealerships and talk to the boss, see if it can be handled without the threat of local/national tv exposure. You know more parking brake fixes with honey and less with _ _ _ _ .
I would somply go to another dealership and have it checked out by them. It should be covers 100% by the warranty, but I don't understand where they get you drove it w/ the brake on, the lights flash and chime goes nuts when you put it into gear with the brake applied. The shoes are thin and that IS normal, they dont have to be as beefy as the regular style shoes because they are just supposed to hold the truck on an incline, not stop the truck on a regular basis. Sounds like a crummy dealer, just move to a different one and don't mention to them that you have had it looked at by another dealer. The thing might just need the cable to be adjusted.
Have you rotated the tires every 5000 miles? I have an '01 YXL and rotate my tires every 5000 mile and have not had any scalloping. My wife's S-10 does because she neglected to rotate the tires. If you take the truck in to the dealer and push the issue they might get you a new set of tires. The tires are covered under the bumper to bumper warranty starting in '01, so it's worth a shot. That scalloping will never wear flat again no matter how long you leave them on the back of the truck. Another thing to have them check is the alignment, you may have a camber problem since it is only on one edge of the tire and not all the way across.
Very little adjustment is available with the cable. Wife's Suburban had no adjustment available. My wife's 01 Suburban came with the pedal 3/4 of the way from the floor and is still that way. My '00 Silverado came with no adjustment in cable and the pedal 1/4 way from floor. The pedal is now to the floor and will barely hold on a hill. The dealer said that they would adjust under warranty but replacement is $200. There is a star adjuster than can be used to adjust (similar to the adjuster on standard drum brakes). To adjust simply, remove rear wheel, remove calipers, remove rotor, turn star wheel several turns and reassemble.
Many have complained about the soft pedal on these vehicles.
There is an adjuster under the truck that can be adjusted, but if it is tightened up all the way all that is left is the adjustment under the rotor. It works just like dusty said, I don't think it is auto adjusting like how the old drum brakes are when you back up and stop it adjusts, well that's how they were designed, after you got a little water on them they almost always locked up and never worked.
The clearance for the shoes to the drum are extremely tight, it is .026" so if that is off then that is the problem, not that you burned up the shoes. My guess is that the dealer is trying to make some $$$ off of you, not that you even need the parts.
Here is what the service manual says on how to adjust the park brake. The special too they are referring to is a brake drum measuring tool.
1. Set the J 21177-A so that it contacts the inside diameter of the rotor. 2. Position the J 21177-A over the shoe and the lining at the widest point. 3. Turn the adjuster nut until the lining just contacts the J 21177-A . 4. Repeat steps 1-3 for the opposite side. 5. The clearance between the park brake shoe and the rotor is 0.6604 mm (0.026 in).
Important: Before you adjust the park brake, verify that the park brake shoes are adjusted to provide a clearance of 0.6604 mm (0.026 in).
I am in a generally flat locale. I do use the parking brake (on all my autos -- always have) if it is particularly hilly.
In addition, I do the wheels in (or out) deal to help the thing stay against the curb if it should roll.
But, where are you guys that you are even in a position to worry about it, or am I just a city slicker who does not use it as there are not too many emergency needs for me to try it out?
I did have to use the emergency brakes to stop my old (really old) chevette and an T-Bird -- going down a mountain in Hawaii after we saw the sun rise -- if I had not had that great Hawaiian coffee I am sure it would have been the last one my new wife (we were on honeymoon) and I would have seen.
"Advertising is one of those fees that are charged to the dealer, this does not come out of the invoice. The price stated on the invoice is the price the dealer has to pay."
Neither invoice had an entry for advertising on either my '00 Silverado or my wife's '01 Suburban. This is another addon in the catagory of dealer prep, undercoating, exterior coating, documentation fee. Pure profit for the dealer.
Why doesn't the dealer list things such as shop cleanup, waste disposal, rent, labor, vacations for employees on the addon list? You know the answer ready.
Remember that these are now called parking brakes not emergency brakes. The type used on drum brakes actually manually engaged the rear brakes in the case of a hydraulic system failure (also used as a park brake). This new type would have a difficult time of being much help in an emergency, hence the term "park"
I got you. Hence my question and concern that either folk drive with them on, the brutes slip while parked, the brake does not disengage when the brake is supposedly disengaged, or the warning does not function correctly.
This brings me back to how can this happen -- assuming that the above is incorrect?

GM starts ALL model year changes in mid July, unless it is a current model year, like the Envoy was, a 2002 out in early '01. So you should see the new models showing up long before September. GM is really relying on the truck/SUV segment for the majority of it's sales, so I can't see them taking their time on the '03 launch. My guess is the closer you are to a plant that produces the SUVs the faster you will see them on dealer lots. Another not well known fact is that GM can run unlimited OT for the first 2 weeks after model year change or until the plant reaches production numbers that they have set. This is called model year ramp up, and is intended to keep a hiccup from happening in the supply line. I figure most dealers to have '03 models in stock by mid August at the latest. Now it's up to you to get there before the other guy buys it, because I am sure like any other new model year they won't last long on the lots.
The updated rear view mirror isn't really all that new, they moved on-star buttons from the dash to the mirror, Cadillac has used that mirror for 2 years now. Another money saving move by GM, and another way to cut a job on the assembly line. GM will get a better deal on the mirrors because they are going to be buying so many more of them and the guy that used to install that part on the dash gets his job cut, so it's win/win for GM, and 1 big loss for another worker.
When, where, what? I am strugglnig with the 2003 predictions. I have heard varying reports from varying people. I have drilled the GMC reps at the detriot auto show. I contacted my local dealership.... Does anyone know when the details of the 2003's will be released? I know the vehicle according to GMC corporate offices will be on the lots in August. I want to the cold facts about the 03 Yuk XL's to compare to the new Cadillac Suburban. They must have a consumer education or release date. NO?
Hi List, I have a 99 GMC Suburban SLT with 4 wheel drive and 42,000 miles. While backing into my driveway a couple of days ago, the power steering suddenly quit working. I checked the belt, the hoses, and the fluid and can find no reason for the system to quit. No dealer in the Dallas Metroplex can look at it till next week. My question is, could it be something electronic with the PS? Anyone else ever experience this problem? Thanks for any assistance anyone can offer... Officer Oz...
email me and I can give you the details on the '03 models, I went to the Chicago Auto Show where they had '03 models on display. I have posted them here before, but the list is long and I think people are fetting tired of looking at it.
howd you like the Chicago autoshow? What day did you go? I went opening day (was 2nd in line when it opened). It wasnt the best i have been to but it was pretty good.
I liked it better than the Detroit auto show. I went on the first Sunday, in the evening around 6pm. I thought it was much better laid out than the Detroit show was, and the only thing I missed was the employee lounge that they set up here at the Detroit show, GM employees and family members can got to the lounge for complimentary soft drinks, ice cream, water, and munchies. I liked the fact that there were a ton of people there and you didn't feel cramped, and you could get much better pictures of the cars because of that. It was the first time I was in Chicago, and loved the whole time there. We stayed in the Hyatt right off the Michigan Mile, went to Ed Debevic's, John Hancock Building, Navy Pier, Michigan Mile, Watertower Building, and the aquarium. I am trying to plan a return trip in warmer weather, February in Chicago is not a really good time to get out and walk around, now I know why they call it the windy city!!

Before you adjust the park brake, verify that the park brake shoes are adjusted to provide a clearance of 0.6604 mm (0.026 in).
Best bet is to take it to a different dealer.
SO, what am I missing here?
Neither invoice had an entry for advertising on either my '00 Silverado or my wife's '01 Suburban. This is another addon in the catagory of dealer prep, undercoating, exterior coating, documentation fee. Pure profit for the dealer.
Why doesn't the dealer list things such as shop cleanup, waste disposal, rent, labor, vacations for employees on the addon list? You know the answer ready.
This brings me back to how can this happen -- assuming that the above is incorrect?

The updated rear view mirror isn't really all that new, they moved on-star buttons from the dash to the mirror, Cadillac has used that mirror for 2 years now. Another money saving move by GM, and another way to cut a job on the assembly line. GM will get a better deal on the mirrors because they are going to be buying so many more of them and the guy that used to install that part on the dash gets his job cut, so it's win/win for GM, and 1 big loss for another worker.
NO?
If you can't find it let me know and I will repost it here.

I have a 99 GMC Suburban SLT with 4 wheel drive and 42,000 miles.
