Can I get the names of Vancouver, B.C. area dealers? Thanks, Bill

    Hi Cap'n:

Here is a link from Nissan Canada for dealers in British Columbia

    <http://www.nissancanada.com/eng/dealers/index.asp?prov=BC&province=British+Columbia>

For your information, Surrey, Richmond, Burnaby, North Vancouver, and Port Coquitlam are all part of greater Vancouver. Abbotsford and Chilliwack are within 90 minutes in the Fraser River valley.

The Canadian dollar is at all time lows, so it is a real good time for US consumers to buy. Nissan has recently released the Chilkoot edition, a base model with some SE parts, such as the 6 disc CD player, SE step rails, etc.

    Enjoy,

The wire in the middle of the windshield is for the AM part of the radio and the antenna mounted on the finder is for the FM part of the radio. AWD: When the AWD is engaged two pumps in the transfer case are activated. There is no benefit except wearing out the pumps in activating the AWD unless the vehicle is on snow or ice when the rear wheel can slip. The only time torque is transferred to the front axle is when the rear wheels slip.

sysadmin1, in addition to the clunking in the situations you've described, recently (I have 27K on a 2000 LE 4X4), I've noticed when driving around 35-45, there seems to be almost a pulsing of the transmission. I'm not sure if that makes sense, but it almost feels like the transmission is slipping, and it's trying to get hold of it again in rapid little tries. It's over in a matter of seconds with maybe 4-6 of the "pulses". Reading over this it really sounds like I'm a nut ;) I'm going to have a local import mechanic take a look at it before I take it to Nissan to hear "Looks fine to us - we'll wait until the warranty's expired to find a problem." :|

    Bill,
As usual, I have info for anyone on how I bought my Path in Canada and brought it back to the US. We're at sixty strong and still going! I also can give you a great dealer contact in Vancouver that everyone has been using if you want it. Just write me.

Am I able to do the same and bring it over here to Florida?

What forms are required at the border for duty?
    How much is the duty?
I am aware about the manufacturer letter since I brought an Acura 1.6EL in 1998 but my US residency status at that time was temporary. Now, I am a permanent resident, so I'm thinking the rules may have changed for me.

I do own a 2001 Burnt Cherry PF LE 4X2 but am thinking of getting an MDX since my family just grew a little bit bigger.

Jon, can I use your PF importing docs/procedures for an MDX? If so, can you email them to me? crikeycrapper@hotmail.com

    Hi all-
I just bought one of the last 2001 SE's on the lot. Came with cloth seats and I'd really like leather. Have heard about leatherseats.com and know that there's a leather kit available from Nissan, but am being told it's $1000 at cost (not including installation). Anyone have any idea whether it's possible to replace the seats? If not, is it a good decision to use the leather kit...and how much should I expect to pay for that option? Thanks!

The Diversity Antenna in the middle of the windshield is definitely for FM reception.

An example of when the diversity antenna might help is when you are stopping at a stop light and just as you stop, the radio station gets fuzzy. So, you roll forward just a few inches and the radio station comes in strong, again. With the diversity antenna, you don't have to creep forward (or sideways) because you've got an antenna in both places.

Ideally, the second antenna would be in the back window instead of the windshield. Putting it back there would put more distance between the antennas, thereby providing more "diversity."

AM antennas (at least every one that I have dealt with) are typically a coil of wire...not a single, long, straight peice of wire. (I'm probably WAY over-simplifying this)

    crikey,
Honda/Acura strictly prohibits their Canadian dealers from selling vehicles to US customers. It's just about impossible to get one to sell it to you because of the penalities that hit them if Acura finds out they did. [As we all know, Nissan has no such restriction].

But maybe you have a chance if you present yourself as a Canadian still living in Canada. But problems still arise. You'd have to pay the GST and would have a hard time getting Revenue Canada to give you a refund since you're Canadian (more checking needed here). Also, in no case will Acura give you a safety/emissions certification letter, so you would need to use a Registered Importer (another $300+).

Bottom line: Bringing in a Nissan is easy. Acura will take much more investigation and work, and some extra costs.

Write me and maybe I can help offline if you want to pursue.

    -Jon
  • crikeycrikey Member Posts: 1,041
I'll touchbase with you should I intend to pursue this. I actually imported an Acura 1.6EL in 1998 and American Honda provided a safety/emissions certification letter at that time. There was no hassle. I'll also try to get in touch with my Acura dealer in Toronto since I bought a couple of cars from the owner and have referred countless others to his dealership. Regarding the GST, I'll take my chances but with the exchange, it's still cheaper to buy in Canada even with GST factored in.

crikey I believe the problem with attaining the MDX in Canada and taking into the US results from the country of origin ,the vechicle is produced in. Nissan Pathfinders are produced in Japan, and imported into Canada, and therefore can move across the border easily. The MDX is produced I believe in Canada, and due to trade agreements between Canada and the US these vechicles are tougher to buy in Canada for use in the US. Even the dealer we bought our Pathfinder from in Canada, said they frowned on selling to US customers, due to penalties they may face from Nissan , which I found strange seeing there are so many dealers selling to US customers. I really think the problem on the MDX is the country of origin, as well as Acura policy on not selling outside the country that the vechicle was alloted to.

Could someone please tell me what GST is and what it would cost you on a $32,000 sale, also what is the current exchange. It sound like a great idea if you live in new england to take a trip up to canada if you save money. (port1988@cs.com) thanks to all I am new here.

I recently purchased a 2001 LE with auto mode all wheel drive. Is it true that leaving the switch in the auto mode, uses more gas even under normal driving conditions? I can understand it using more gas in a slip condition because it engages all 4 wheels. But in a normal driving condition wouldn't auto mode use the same amount of gas as 2 wheel drive mode?

It happend last night, my pathy seemed lagging. In the city street I barely noticed it, but when I got into highway, it show that something was holding the engine back. I could not pass over 75mph, and RPM couldn't go over 3000. If I press the gas padel fully, I can hear the engine but speed and RPM wouldn't go up. Also when I release the gas padel, car would stay at same speed + same RPM range for 4 seconds, like its on cruise control. Anyone know what is wrong with my car? It is an 99.5 PF.

GST is our GOODS and Services Tax which is pegged at 7%. Current exchange rate is approx
$.637 or which translates to $1 US = $1.57 Canadian. Not a bad deal for US residents seeing you can apply to the Canadian Government to get the GST back, and add the fact that Canadian vechicles are priced lower in Canadian Dollars than the same Vechicle compared to the same vechicle in the USA when converted to US $. Generally speaking a $30,000 US $ car would be approx. $40,000 Canadian $. Hope this info helps.

Will I decided to take my PF to the dealership today to let them look at my problem. On my way to the dealership, the truck still was lagging little bit, now I couldnt go over 80mph, and truck seemed having trouble finding right gears. So I took it in, and the service man said, "well, its gonna cost $80 to run test and if we do find problems then extra to fit them." Wow $80 to just check what is wrong with my truck? So I figured I'll come back to dealership later on, since it was first-one come first service and I didnt have much time left. But couple hours later, I get back on the highway, and now problem seemed to be gone. Basically I'm on day-to-day situation to see if the problem comes back. By the way, someone with PF said he had the same problem as mine, but he's also dissappeared after a day. Also, my pathy had BLITZ intake, maybe that had something to do it with, since other guy had JWT pop charger.

Don't know exactly what kind of "after sales" leather seats you would get, but beware! I opted for the leather seats when I got my 2001 LE last year (because I had never had leather and wanted to own at least one vehicle with leather seats). They're ok, but now that I have them, I think the cloth seats are better (more durable, less maintenance, less sliding on them). If the leather had been the very high quality type they would be -ok-, but still I think cloth would be better.
Just one opinion to consider. I'm sure others (who are honest to themselves) might make similar comments.
The power and heat is in the seat itself. You could just re-cover the seat with leather and retain those features. Check with auto upholstery places.
  • meca2meca2 Member Posts: 284
Local Nissan Dealer have contracts with local upholstery shops that specialize in leather seats. They might be able to install the heat blankets in the seats and have the dealer on an electric shop do the wirering. Or the dealer has leather replacement @ $700 per seat.
Antenna: The service manual indicates that the wire in the window is for FM and the other antenna is for AM. Diversity Antenna....Nada
  • woodyr1woodyr1 Member Posts: 142
I have a 2001 Pathfinder XE, which does not have the wire embedded in the windshield for an antenna. I only have a fender mounted antenna, and have the factory AM/FM, casette, with single CD player. As I receive both AM and FM signals, I suspect that the fender mounted mast serves both frequencies.

I don't think that build origin of the vehicle is a deterrent for importing a vehicle from Canada into the U.S., per http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/rules/import/can0010.html as it would probably state so, including NAFTA guidelines. It seems that as long as the vehicle passes EPA and U.S. FMVSS (which the MDX and PF do), it should be fair game.

I think the deterrent might be the manufacturer instructing their Canadian dealers not to sell the vehicles for specific importation to the U.S. as it cannibalizes U.S. sales. Also, warranty hassles might also be a deterrent.

    KMRG,
I'd also be tracking the gas you put in the Path. With previous cars i've gotten bad gas (water laden, poor grade, residues) and the vehicle exhibited similar symptoms to what you mentioned and then mysteriously disappeared after a few days. If you can recall the last place you filled up maybe you can correlate it to that. I see your Path is a 99.5. Have you exceeded the warranty?

You mentioned that the dealership wanted to charge you $80 bucks to do a diagnostic and then charge for any necessary work. Isn't it wonderful how dealer service shops can find a piece of equipment that makes their job a 1000 times easier (i.e computer diagnostic)so they can sit on their duffs and drink coffee while the computer does the work, and then have the nerve to charge you an arm and a leg just to tell you it's gonna cost you another arm and leg to fix it.

I had my Path in for an oil change a couple weeks ago and decided that after 6000 miles i might as well save myself the hassel and have the tires rotated too. Well before i had them rotated, the steering wheel always was slightly turned to the left even when driving straight. I figured the alignment was a little off, but it wasn't too much to be a problem. Now after the tires were rotated the steering wheel is turned slightly to the right when driving straight. Still not a major problem, but i can't figure out why it switched. I can't imagine that the rims or tires are that mishapen to cause this strange reversal and i don't think that the service guys would have done anything to change the alignment by just rotating tires. Any ideas?

Many car companies use Diversity Antenna's to improve both AM and FM signals, Nissan since at least 1994. If you're curious for more info, type "nissan diversity antenna" into Yahoo. You should get plenty of information.

crikey is exactly right - if it passes emissions and safety, the US govt has no problem with you bringing in the vehicle. And of course the Pathfinder is ok.

I'll add a couple comments about the manufacturers too. Many of them had problems with the US dealers buying popular vehicles from the Canadian dealers and reselling here. Like LOTS of vehicles. List price in Canada was less than the invoice price in the US. So the manufacturers just cut it all off and said no more. Nissan also doesn't allow cross-border dealer sales (but individual sales are still ok). It totally messes up the suppy balance.

As far as where the vehicle is built, some of the manufactures have agreements with the Canadian govt that a certian pct (or number) of the vehicles built in Canada must stay there. Happened with the Honda Odyssey. Recently you couldn't get one at all here in the US, but there were tons of them sitting on the lots in Canada.

The condition of the tires on the front axle greatly affects alignment and steering. Even differences in pressure, tread depth can sometimes affect alignment.

Gross changes in alignment are usually the result of a radial tire's steel belts or carcass performing differently than the opposite tire. Often, in this case, the car will pull to one side, even if the alignment is in spec.

The slight changes you're experiencing are probably due to tire wear patterns, or even the particular road surface you're driving on. If the car doesn't pull, and your steering wheel isn't more than a couple of degrees off center while driving straight, don't fret it.

PS. Be thankful that your biggest worries so far are "my steering wheel isn't centered when I drive straight" and not more serious problems that you can read about on other SUV boards.

Some Nissan boards that I have visited in the web suggested to change the automatic transmission fluid as soon as possible when you have the new 01'Pathy also change the engine oil. I first replaced my engine oil at 679 miles then after that every 3,000 miles. I have not change the ATF, the car has about 17,800 miles. The owner manual recommends to replace ATF at 30,000. Should I replace my ATF now or wait till the 30K recommendation?
Also do you recommend a wheel alignment at this mileage of the car eventhough there is no noticeable problem with the alignment like excessive tire wear or car moving to left or right? Appreciate your input..
  • skips2skips2 Member Posts: 52
I just purchased a new 2001 LE with everything except NAV and ENT. I distinctly remember the owners manual stating that Nissan used a high quality motor oil and there is no need to change it earlier than recommended. As for the ATF, I would only change it earlier than recommended if I did a lot of heavy towing. Otherwise, I would wait until 30,000 miles to change it.
  • fossfatefossfate Member Posts: 12
I've been shopping for 2001 LE with leather for quite some time now. came across an ad for used LE with nav and ent (has 12,000 miles) I called the dealer to make an offer. he wont go below 29,000.does that sound like a reasonable price? I really dont need the nav or ent, but they might be kind of fun to have. the issue is.. that's more than I have to spend. So, out of desperation I mentioned that I could go to Canada and purchase new for around 26,000 (without ent. and nav.) the salesman got defensive (as I anticipated he might)
and tried to argue the specs of Canadian vs. American. Awhile after we ended the conversation he called me back to tell me that the dealership owner said I should be careful importing from Canada because the owners manual clearly states that the warranty would only be transferred if a Canadian vehicle was purchased by a Canadian resident relocating to the US. not if a US citizen purchased in Canada. Is this really in the manual? Have any of you that purchased in Canada had a problem transferring the warranty?
How about difficulty registering the vehicle?
    Thanks for your help

I was wondering if any of you have/had this problem. I'm having problems with the keyless entry remote. Some times it doesn't lock or unlock the vehicle. I've replaced the batteries, but that doesn't seem to solve the problem. Does anyone know what else the problem could be? Thanks for your help in advance!
  • yrideyride Member Posts: 21
Before making my CDN purchase, I considered the negotiating tactic you mentioned. I chose not to for 2 reasons. 1) It's not fair to ask a US dealer to match or beat the CDN price and 2) It jeopardizes the loss of this purchase option.

Favorable Canadian pricing for US buyers is largely due to advantageous currency exchange rates. We can buy a Path for less than the dealer. The dealer has to make some profit, else his kids starve. US cost data is readily available and those who can't go to CDN should use it to make the best deal they can.

If US dealers sense they are losing significant $'s to CDN sales, they will push back on Nissan to prohibit these transactions. That hurts most of the people on this board and many others who will come here in the future.

How is the rear seating room in the Pathfinder. Is is cramped or comfortable for two adults
  • lofquistlofquist Member Posts: 281
    fossfate,
There is nothing in the manual about not being able to transfer the warranty. My local dealer's service dept even did it for me. Or you can call Nissan and they will send you a form. I had a small warranty item done on my Canadian Pathfinder at the dealer with no problem at all.

When you buy in Toronto you will get an Ontario title with your name on it. That, along with the Customs docs will get you registered in your state.

The vehicle specs are the same. Except for the nice additions you get in Canada like All-mode 4x4 on the automatic trans SE and a power antenna that you can't get at all in the US.

I agree with yride that US dealers are miles away from being able to meet the Canadian prices (like about $4000). Knowing that they are losing sales might make some dealers cry to Nissan. But on the grand scale of the whole US, a few dozen sales a year lost to Canada doesn't even register on the chart. If you buy in Canada, explain to the salesguy that you just couldn't pass up the deal and give him a $50 gift cert for dinner (I would have suggested $75 except he lied to you about the warranty). That's as much commission as he would have made on a leftover 2001 sale.

And don't forget that new Path from Canada would be a new 2002, not a used 2001. I imagine that in a few years the resale on being a year newer with lower miles might be better than having nav and ent.

I had the same problem with my remote. My local Nissan dealer replaced the old remote with a new one on the spot after I demonstrated its irratic behavoir. Make sure to bring your other remote so the dealer can re-program that remote with the new one.

I don't think mine are broken but I do find that I have to hit the unlock button about 5 times to get all the doors to unlock and sometimes have to press lock numerous times to get it to lock. It's frustrating when previous vehicles responded to each push of the button.
  • lofquistlofquist Member Posts: 281
I would respectfully disagree that something is not wrong with your remotes or the receiver. Mine works flawlessly, and from long distances too.

I have noticed that I have to hold our buttons down for a bit longer than on other remotes. But it still works 100% of the time.

I DON'T KNOW ABOUT YOU ALL BUT THE ONLY THING THAT'S KIND OF UNCOMFORTABLE WITH LONG TRIPS IN THE PATHFINDER IS THE DISCOMFORT
IN MY LEFT ELBOW FROM RESTING IT ON THE TOP OF THE DOOR FOR LONG PERIODS OF TIME. SOMEONE SHOULD INVENT SOME SOFT OF CUSTOM SOFT PADDING FOR UP THERE SO THAT ONE'S ELBOW IS COMFORTABLE. OTHERWISE, WHAT A GREAT TRUCK. DROVE FROM ST. PETERSBURG TO FT. LAUDERDALE ON I75 A LOT LATELY. TRUCK DOES 95 MPH SO EFFORTLESSLY ACROSS ALLIGATOR ALLEY.... IT FEELS LIKE 55 MPH!! SO SMOOTH AND POWERFUL. WOULD LIKE TO TEST THAT BMW X5 THOUGH AND COMPARE.

The back of my remote clearly states:

    PRESS UNLOCK
    ONCE: DRIVER DOOR
    TWICE: ALL DOORS

If it's not operating like that, something is definately wrong. I've been using mine for over two years and I've never had a problem although the range has decreased as the batteries have wore down.

I too have the remote problem (2001LE). Sometimes it works on the 1st try other times it takes 2 or 3 (no matter how long you hold it down). I gotten into the habit of pushing the button several times all the time. My wife and I switch remotes often and it happens with either one. Leads me to believe it's the receiver. If you try it over and over again it will start to work just fine. This leads me to believe that if I take it to the dealer they will not be able to reproduce and therefore unable to fix. After hearing some others here it seems like Nissan might be aware of a problem so I think I will give it a shot anyway. If anyone gets this fixed please post.

Last vehicle I had (90 4Runner), I installed an alarm system with keyless remotes. These have antennas (400 MHz), usually "drooped" in the dash. I wired that antenna wire to a BNC (bayonet RF connector) installed at the bottom of the center dash, and when I wasn't using the antenna on the roof of the truck I connected it to the alarm. I had 200 to 300 yd. range. I'll have a look in the ESM to see if this can be done on the Pathfinder and report back.

I too find the armrest very hard. One of these days I'm going to glue on a piece of 1/8" "ethafoam" (the white closed cell packing material you often find) and glue over it a piece of leather (colour co-ordinated of course ;-). Contact cement works very well for this.
