    @mike879, I am in Fargo, ND and have talked to no less than 8 dealers in the Minneapolis/Fargo/Grand Forks area today and so far the best deal is for 23,800 plus TTL for an EX AWD. I am still in negotiations but I have 3 dealers making similar offers right now. Oh, and all the current offers include all weather mats.

    Thanks for the adivce @brian125. I ended up going out of state (to NY) and buying my 2016 CRV AWD EXL for $26,675 + TTL. It was very worthwhile ($1400 worthwhile) to travel out of state.

    that seems like a great deal,I am looking at a 2016 with 7300 miles on it certified at Honda CRV EXL AWD, they are asking 26,042.00 +T/L Thought I might offer 25,200 see were it goes.

    Hi @amb1981, fixed your post re the EX-L. :)

    I'm assuming you are shopping the AWD one in NJ.

    Invoice is $28,819 and the True Market Value average price paid for a NJ zip is $28,278 (we show MSRP to be $30,645). All numbers include the $900 destination.

    So your selling price quote of $27,337 is about $1,500 below invoice. Not bad, bit more than 10% off MSRP, well, almost 11%.

    They get you some on fees. Etch is worthless and the dealers get paid by Honda for prep work. The doc fee is too high too (anything over $50 is too high). Be nice to see you whack those numbers down from ~$800 to more like $300 (dealers have to make a little profit).

    You may want to try a counter at $29,600 and then have your real target a couple of hundred below $30,000 OTD.

    Overall though, the deal isn't bad at all.

    A couple of thoughts on the CRV in New Jersey.

    A automobile window etch kit is $17.95 at Amazon, plus $2.75 shipping. And yes, window etch is worthless.

    The doc fee is simply price. The real price this dealer is selling the CRV is $27,000. The dealer will claim otherwise, but the fact is all those doc fees are just part of the price.

    A price includes all of the sellers costs plus profit. The minimal cost of preparing documents is a seller cost, hence part of the price.

    And really, all those documents are prepared by the F&I person while you are waiting to enter the box. Do you think you should pay the F&I person $500?

    Finally, there is no need for a buyer to have any concern about a dealer's profit. The one thing any buyer can be sure about is the dealer will never, ever sell a vehicle at a price it does not want for the vehicle.

    I know they are making some good money on the extended warranty, but is this a good deal overall?

    You made a nice deal at $2600 below invoice but overpaid on the 8 yr warranty.

    $875 to 1100 is where most good deals can be had on the 8yr warranty.

    What dealer in L.I did you purchase ?

    Only thing I can think of is that there's an ad fee getting tacked on. We don't show one, but we often don't know about them. Ad fees are "legit" charges from the manufacturer but I don't think consumers should pay them. Guess you should just ask the dealer why they inflate the numbers and also look on the Monroney sticker. Honda could have changed the numbers but that's unlikely.

    I think your current offer is $800 too high. 10% off MSRP is very reasonable and would put you at $26,973.

    If you have the time and energy, I'd shop that quote around to some more dealers.

    My zipcode is 52241 in Iowa. There are so few threads about Iowa. Want to get a AWD LX or SE. Only had a test drive, have not started price negotiations yet. Not sure how the price can be compared to NJ, NY listed above, Any suggestions? Thanks so much!

    The True Market Value average price paid for your zip is almost the same as invoice for the LX. (24,465). TMV in DC is $1,366 less than invoice, $800 less in NJ, $1,000 less in LA, even 1,100 off here in Las Cruces which is a pretty small market, even including the 750,000 people an hour away in El Paso.

    Even our local one-price dealer here is offering an LX FWD for almost 16% off invoice (maybe the 2017s are almost here?). The higher trims are barely discounted though.

    I'd seek quotes from all the dealers you are comfortable driving to. Including one in Minneapolis - the TMV there is similar to NJ, about $850 less than invoice. Then you can use that quote, assuming it's a decent one, to hammer your closer dealers to try to match it.

    10% off MSRP would give you a target selling price of $23,350. 8% off would be $$23,870.

    Thanks for the comments! Please help me further understand the numbers you have put forward.

    Is the true market value average paid price equal to the OTD price I can potentially negotiate? That means $24465 including TTL etc? The dealer showed me the MSRP of $ 25775 of the LX AWD and asked me to do my research and come back. I am afraid that I raise this price, they will be outraged. I do not plan to drive too IL, but stay with the three local dealers. All of them have a big inventory of 2016 CRV. Thanks again

    TMV is the selling price, not the OTD price. It includes destination but not taxes and fees. So the TMV average is $24,465 plus TTL. My suggested 10% off target also does not include TTL, so if you want to do an offer, add taxes to that.

    It's only business and the dealer has heard it all before. Don't worry, they won't sell a car if there's no money in it for them somewhere.

    Just bought our 2016 CR-V EX FWD here in Birmingham, after reviewing this forum and advise from @stever

    Edmunds TMV listed invoice as $25,309 in our area, and Honda is currently offering a $900 manufacturer to dealer incentive. I specifically told the dealer I had reviewed TrueCar, Edmunds TMV, and USAA Car Buying sites.     They started at $25,800 + TTL = $27,600 OTD, with lifetime powertrain but no accessories or maintenance included. After a little back and forth, we settled on $25,300 OTD with the below accessories, service, and powertrain warranty. Pretty painless.

    $23,770 vehicle price (w/moonroof visor, mud flaps, wheel locks, cargo tray, door protectors, polysteel paint and interior protectant, 2yrs of scheduled maintenance, and lifetime powertrain warranty), $599 doc fee, $914 tax, and $16.50 title fee.

    Total - $25,300 OTD @ $0 down/.9% APR for 60 months


    I heard December 21st for 2017 CR-V.

If I were to go to the dealer tomorrow to get a CRV EX AWD , what numbers should I point out? Is it $26,071 (dealer cost) minus $548 (holdback) minus $900 ( manufacturer to dealer incentive ) = 24,623 as my ball park figure of what I should be aiming for ?

    We show invoice to be $26,526 with the destination ($900). MSRP is $28,195 for the EX AWD.

    $24,600 would be about $2,000 below invoice and about 13% below MSRP. That may be doable in the NYC area although it's a bit aggressive. TMV is about $600 below invoice.

    I'd focus on your bottom line number or add in the taxes for an OTD number. I wouldn't even mention holdback, much less try to negotiate it away.

    Thanks again for your guidance. Just one last question, based on previous years experience, do you know if even new cars (2017 crvs) would have some rooms for negotiation? Or i would be expected yo pay close to msrp.

    Yeah, even around year end if the new CR-Vs arrive in any decent numbers by then. Otherwise the end of January should offer some deals.

    Looks like tons of 2016 inventory near NYC. Maybe I'm underestimating deals again....

    Ending up with the 2016 crv ex for 24.2k before taxes and fees. Beside destination fee and ttl, nothinh else was added. I live in queens ny. I went to the dealer through costco auto program but the costco price was not a good deal. I told the dealer that i received another offer from another dealer through edmunds.com for 24.2k. I didnt expect him to match the offer but he did.

    just a FYI, it looks like dealerships in the NYC area are trying to clear out the 2016 models. I received two email offers to get the CRV EX for 24k. There may be more room to negotiate later in the month with month's end and the 2017 models available for purchase on the 21s (available for pickup mid January per the dealer I talked to yesterday).

    My 2004 Honda Odyssey EX-L/DVD is hitting it's last legs. (Yesterday the passenger window came off it's track. Not what you want in Decemeber :) ). So playing around with a company sponsored auto buying program. I queried a '16 CRV EX-L 2WD. Those are rare apparently. So, got a quote for AWD EX-L. NY

    2016 Honda

    Special Internet Price $ 27,613.00
    Sales Tax (8.625%) $ 2,364.37
    NYS Inspection $ 10.00

    Tax actually seems to be calculated on 27,413. Number don't exactly add up. TMV is saying $28,299 for my area. In no rush, unless the window is unfixable and the driver of said odyssey is sick of it.

    Oh, I have an '06 Civic with 237,000 miles. Can you get a better deal shopping for two cars at once. ;)

    I can get "supplier" pricing on some models. A true employee discount may be worth it, but it seems like most of the other programs may save you some hassle but not much money.

    You are obviously educated so you'll do fine (heh, you've been posting here since at least '04, no wonder you know the drill) - let us know how it goes as you shop for more quotes.

    Oh, two at once. I don't think it helps but plenty of other people think it does. And they may be right, especially at the end of the month/year (good way for a dealer to pad their quota!).

    I guess I'd look at it like you should when you have a trade. Make sure the numbers work for "both" deals.

    Same here. Looks like 2016 crv models are at its lowest, but the 2017s are looking real good. Some dealers already got their cars and are selling them. I am wondering how much more it would be to buy the 2017 crv ex awd compared to a 2016 crv ex awd. I am thinking it might be almost 2.5-3k more. Not sure if it is worth it, but the standard safety features are nice which were optional for 2016 models.

    If i have to do it again i think i would be willing to pay an extra 2k for the 2017s. The honda sensing is standard starting from the EX trim in the 2017s, but only available with the 2016 touring ( no option to add with the ex/exl trims). Plus i think the 2017s come with an extra 2" of leg room.

    HI @dodabek, TMV is close to invoice ($28,819) so your selling price is about $1,400 below invoice and a bit better than 10% off your MSRP. We show MSRP to be $30,645, go figure.

    If you have time, you may want to wait another week or ten days and try for 12% off MSRP. That would mean a selling price of $26,950, another $400 or so off. I see about 88 EX-Ls near you on our inventory link so there seems to be plenty around, unless you are set on a certain color.

    So, yeah, fair price, might be able to do a little better.
