Q...I think the transmission Honda had issues with was the 6-speed, not the 5-speeds in the '04-'05 versions. The '05 was the first TL I owned. It was a great car. I think I kept it longer than any car I can remember over the last 20 years. I think I kept it 5 years.

@bwia....made in OHIO. IF anyone ever gets the chance to see the plant in Marysville, OH, it is quite a site to behold. You'll understand by the enthusiasm, processes, cleanliness, etc why Honda's products are so reliable and well put together.

Anyone ever visit a Honda/Acura plant in Japan? I imagine there are some master-car-craftsmen working in those plants. I do enjoy watching videos of Audi's being produced in factories as well. One day I'd like to visit.

Never thought about the parking "button" but I tend to agree with you. Doubt it's going to stop much of anything.

Loved the E-switch parking brake in my S4.

For 1, it does work just like a lever (at least in the Audi). You can pull it up and release, or go all the way up which makes it hit the "end" switch so that you can let go. Let go without going all the way up, and it works just like a lever. Ask me how I know when I was going home with metal on metal contact in my front brakes.
It'll slow you down, though admittedly I didn't try it at speeds over 15-20 MPH.

Secondly, and even more importantly in my opinion, it saves space and room in the car's interior. I hate foot parking brakes (the one in the Kia is bothering me). and a lever in the center console takes up tons of valuable real estate in a vehicle. A switch takes up the space of a button.

The only IMO legit complaint is the graphics stuff, maybe, but up to each buyer to decide. Same with styling.

I think wanting more power is a legit complaint, but stating it as "no turbo" throws you off-track. If they can achieve it by throwing in a Honda V8

, then by all means do so. However, the car would become very front-heavy and unbalanced.

I am getting my last delivery of Epclusa (the Hepatitis C anti-viral drug) sometime today from the specialty pharmacy in Miami. I take my 3rd blood test to check for the Hep C Virus next Friday when I get home from visiting my brother in Ponte Vedra. It's going to be good to get away and be with family for a change. I don't know what I would do without my brother!

That is great news Mike.

Hang onto us, we'll get you through this and you can celebrate with a new 740i when they are introduced.

I've got to get one of those cool exhaust systems on my Mustang. Yesterday on the highway a work colleague passed me in his Crossfire at a pretty good clip. He got about a half mile ahead before I decided to catch up. At maybe 3/4 throttle I was on him quick. I looked down and I was doing 100 for the first time. Car was so stable and quiet I didn't realize it.

Now that you have had success breaking the ice, when are you going to do it again?

Save your money. Get an old boom box, insert a tape with a great exhaust sound, open the moon roof and blast away.

I've been to the AMG engine building line, and I have been to the MB factory at Sindelfingen twice. It's pretty interesting. I've also been to the MB facility in Alabama.

Thanks JM, and all my dear, dear biddies here on Edmunds. Living alone and far from the kids and grandkids is very difficult. Just simple tasks like going food shopping (which I must do this morning) is a true hassle.

As for the new 740i - it's already on dealer lots. BMW does that all the time as does Mercedes. And, no I am not getting any more new cars.

When you experience technology in a car, several options become needs rather than "...gee, wouldn't it be nice to have...!" Let me explain.

I would never have ordered a car with a heads-up display - I thought it was a waste of money. Now that I have it on my new car, I would never buy a car without it. I never look at my instrument panel when driving. Heads-up display shows phone calls, navigation directions and addresses, speed limit, speed, and even audio source and selection.

The same is true for ventilated/cooled seats. Down here in south Florida, May through October can be very hot and humid. Cooled seats make me cool in just the right places.

Add to the above blind spot monitors, an upgraded audio system, parking sensors and 360 degree cameras. Thus options I would never have considered prior to experiencing their comfort or safety have become necessities for me.

I agree; I like the navigation, decent audio, and ConnectedDrive features that I haven't had before. HUD and the other options you referenced haven't become necessities.

Waze is annoying suburbanites. The GPS navigation system works on smartphones and tablets with turn-by-turn information and user-submitted travel times and route details.

Here is the problem. On crowded highways Waze directs drivers to take less travelled and faster routes through quiet sleepy neighborhoods thus increasing traffic in once pristine and tony neighborhoods. But the impact is not all bad after all. Let me explain. (thanks for that borrowed transitional phrase from Mike)

Driving on these back roads drivers are discovering a new world of upscale housing and real estate. That in turn is driving up demand and prices in these neighborhoods. A win win for buyers and sellers. Last weekend I had the opportunity to observe this phenomenon first hand. My daughter turned on Waze and suddenly we were driving through some of Maryland's upscale properties. From the highway we had no idea such places existed.

Since then, I have downloaded Waze but have not yet tried it. Isn't technology great?
By the way, has anyone tried Waze, and what is your experience?

My wife's X1 has the HUD. I thought it was a gimmick but it truly is very useful from a safety perspective.

Am I wrong thinking all engines aren't capable of being tourboed? My impression is that a motor needed to be fairly robust to handle the extra stresses associated with boost. I even remember reading that the Ford Coyote had to have extra reinforcement made to the block just to handle non-turbo stress.

My parents' 1st 3 BMWs ('04 X5, '05 530i, & '07 X5) didn't have navigation. Since then (starting with an '08 328xi), they won't buy a car without it.

The same with Blind Spot Monitors. My Dad's 1st Tahoe ('10 LTZ) had them. From the 1st highway drive home from the dealership, he thought they were excellent. When he traded the 2010 Tahoe in for a leftover 2011 Tahoe (in 2012), The dealership couldn't find an LTZ with the Blind Spot Monitors. The only LTZs available had the HD Trailer Towing Package (HD Transmission Cooler, Trailer Brake Control...useless to him) which could not be equipped with Blind Spot Monitors. It was a good deal plus 0% financing for 6 years so he took it. He said he'd been driving so long before without the blind spot monitors & he adjusts his mirrors properly so he wouldn't miss them. He called me while driving home from the dealership saying that he made a mistake. When it came time to trade in his '11 Tahoe for the '15 Tahoe, he made sure Blind SPot Monitors were on the list of options it had.

I love the BLIS system. Just such a nice heads up and back up plan! I have no plans to buy new without getting that. Bigger issue getting used, or cheap lease. Bigger issue is getting a back up camera on a used car. Very few of those I would get without a camera.

HUD I tried on a BMW test drive. Was nice. I could get used to it, but would never be a deal breaker I don't think.

Navi, I want. But CarPlay would be fine for that.

I haven't actually used waze but it is on my phone. I use google maps, which actually picks up accident reports from waze.

This AM, I saw this same situation. My daughter started summer job this week, commuting 45 miles each way into Delaware. So I check google to see if she needs to take alternate route. And the quickest way normally (about 5 minutes) is down the turnpike. We don't do that, but curious, I looked at the route. Same deal, cutting through a few neighborhoods (a way I never knew about!) to avoid the bigger roads that were all showing red from traffic. If I lived back in there, I would hate that!

The other challenge with Waze is as everybody bails for the back roads they become clogged too - last night it took 45 minutes to get through downtown Seattle, a trip of ~ 5 miles. I took the Waze suggested route, but a few minutes in and several painful traffic lights later I realized the 5 MPH freeway would have been a better choice. Sitting through 3+ cycles each light and never moving drives me crazy.

Boy...do I agree with having BLISS on a Tahoe. Had it on my LTZ Tahoe and really came to rely on that feature quite a bit. More important on a big vehicle like a Tahoe, but certainly useful on most vehicles.

Yes Mike you are right about the heads up display. It is nice and it is one of the reasons why I got the Ultimate package on my '15 Genny.

A couple months after Son #1 got out of ~~State Penn~~ Penn State in '71 (EDIT: 2001, Second EDIT: 1991) his first new car, a '71 (EDIT: 2001, Second EDIT: 1991) Grand Prix, had heads up display. It also had all those radio buttons on the steering wheel too. A very complicated looking steering wheel but he said his dates were impressed with it. Sorta broke the ice for car talk.

I don't know if it is true but my son maintains that the radio control steering wheel he had on that '71 (EDIT: 2001, Second EDIT: 1991) Grand Prix was the start of buttons being placed on all steering wheels as we see them today. Maybe some of the experts in here can confirm that.

FWIW, when he hit a deer on I 79 one night while driving to his apartment he lost the windshield too. When he saw the estimates he decided to get $100 comprehensive deductible instead of $250 like he had originally. Just in case he took a stone to the windshield because he said heads up display windshields cost a near fortune back then because they were relatively new. They still ain't cheap but the delta isn't as much.

When you play, you have to be willing to pay.

One of the nice things about my Liberty Mutual Insurance on the car is that there is no deductible for front windshield replacement. Thus, if I need a special windshield for my heads-up display, I'm covered!

I mentioned the other day that the flooding in Broward County was pretty bad, but that where I lived we had no problems. Well, on my way to shopping at Walmart for food this morning, not only was 1/2 the parking lot flooded, but the streets leading up to Walmart's location in Coral Springs were also flooded. My guess is that my 740i was not bothered by the flooding since I merely pressed a button on my console and raised the car up a couple-three inches - a feature I thought I would never need or use.

Speaking of flooding, the skies are darkening once again in preparation for afternoon thunderstorms - just what we need - more rain! I just checked with local Doppler radar and sure enough, there's a line of green, orange and red headed my way from the west coast of Florida. At least I caught sight of the sun for about an hour this morning.

I thought HUD was for people who wanted to be jet pilots....but, now I love using it. Never have to look down at the speedo.........and I can always check which direction I am going in without looking around.

If you need a HUD to tell you in which direction you are going, things are much worse with you, driver, than any of us thought!

my 740i was not bothered by the flooding since I merely pressed a button on my console and raised the car up a couple-three inches - a feature I thought I would never need or use.

Does it have an automatic rain cover along with a tornado protection and hurricane protection cover?

It might, Imid, I just haven't figured out which button(s) I need to press in order to deploy those features. Won't I be surprised when I find out which one(s) to press!

Got a call from my doctor just now. There were no additional tumors found on the ultrasouind. So, that's the good news - but they found something else. So my doctor is forwarding the results to my gastroenterologist in order to determine what it is and how he wants to deal with it. Probably won't know anything until next week.

You know, I was wrong again. It was a 1991 not a 2001. I'm pretty bad with numbers today.

Now get busy and find out if my son was right about the 1991 Grand Prix being the forerunner of radio buttons and other stuff on the steering wheel. :@

Maybe that ultrasound has found the signs of an early undetectable itch that can only be satisfied by a new car purchase.
