that explains it. Plenty in SJ and the shore, but none in N. Jersey where I was at the time (well, just over the NY border). And just a couple way out by Buffalo in NYS

I found the pic in an article about defunct restaurant chains.

I knew I'd seen that pic before somewhere. It was one of the pics taken on August 9, 1969 in Treasure Island, FL at the opening of the 1,000th Burger Chef restaurant.

OK, I am bemused. What is the bronze car with a white top seen just to the right of the Chevelle? The front end looks a bit like a ‘63 or so Buick Special, but I’m not sure.

Looks like a Ford Galaxie. Nice color.

Looked like a '61 Ford to me but I checked some pics and the side spear indicates it's a
    1962 Ford, probably a Galaxie

Definitely a full sized 62 Ford convertible, so a Galaxie.

Hood emblem gives that away...that is the matronly Jaguar Mark V Drophead. Hard to believe that in the same breath they would produce the XK 120.

    1950 Dodge Woodie Wagon.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,682
Yup, it's definitely a Dodge and obviously a woodie. Officially it's a 1949 Dodge B1B. The body was built by Campbell Body Works in Waterloo, NY. The interior is amazing to behold>

1949 - didn't Mopar bring out all steel wagons around then?

I think this is on a truck chassis, so probably originally built for livery use I would guess.

Unfortunately, it's a buyer's market for souls in 2017, so don't expect any good deals. :p

When I was on a line crew for an electric utility company in the early '70s, among our fleet of bucket trucks was a 1949 Dodge Power Wagon. We used it for transportation along roadless electric right-of-ways through the woods. The wagon was 20+ years old and still had great power and excellent off-road capabilities. Its body was all banged up including the major dent in its roof from twice having been rolled over on a right-of-way. What a vehicle!

Yeah, the '69 had a big schnozzola.

My first thought was '67, but I adjusted it, because I'm always guessing too old. :@

IIRC, they squared off and enlarged that Lincoln Continental around 64 or 65. I think the original 61 design was too smallish looking for many lux buyers back in those days.

I did a double take on this one too.  At first glance certainly could be mistaken for a Mark.  I wouldn’t throw that one out of my driveway

    I would adjust those wipers.

I'd lift them up and put them back down on the glass. Then start 'er up, give it a squirt of bug juice and turn on the wipers so they run for a few minutes. Oughta fix her right up!

White MB Ponton coupe at far left, looks like a Beetle behind it.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,682
Yup, that's a Ponton (220SE?) crowding a red VW (post 1959 w. larger rear glass). The red car next to it is a post 1973 Triumph Spitfire w disc wheels and whitewalls. The Spitfire is likely the newest car, perhaps by over a decade.

  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,760
I thought the Triumph seemed out of place among much older cars. MB is a 220S or 220SE.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,682
The red coupe next to the Spitfire is a Jaguar XK-120 FHC or perhaps an XK-149 FHC, hard to tell which and I think the white car next to it is an XK-150 FHC. It's odd that so many Fixed Head Coupes would show up in one small lot since the open versions (DHC/OTS/Roadster) were much more popular (at least in the US).

Finishing this one off you can see a hedlight and a blue fender next to the XK-150, I think it's a Porsche 356B or C. To its right a white Jag Mk.II and a blue VW Cab, partially obscured by the cyclist.

Oh, but it will be ....

This is the new BMW X2, the latest SUV/CUV/SAV entry from Bavaria.

Goodness knows BMW can't miss filling a niche - there is now an X model from 1 to 6 (and, I believe I've heard about an X7 that may be released).

It will be. It's the new X2, the 'stylish' version of the X1, like the X4/X3, X6/X5. But in this case, not that obvious why it's needed.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,760
My response was a joke, as I don't see any style in the X2. Just a cynical niche-fill. Of course, they will sell.

Style? I must have missed it. Designers used to have a motto: "The wastebasket is your best friend".

It's almost like BMW is parodying itself.

I miss Stapleton at Denver. Sure it was runway constrained, but the views and the focus on local shops. Chicago O'Hare has a very similar underpass under a taxiway. That United paint job lasted for many years. The cars; these are newer than usual, probably late 70's - 80's. I can't expand the picture up sized enough to get a good enough view and don't really follow that vintage all that much. But it is interesting how pickups and SUV's were popular in Denver before they went big time on a national basis. Makes sense though given the unpredictability of Denver weather.

i kind of like the X2 because it looks like a hatchback rather than a CUV. Also kind of like the emblem in the C pillar, a la Maserati. The oddest thing to me is the painted piece within the gray lower cladding. So we've put material on there for "offroading" and then added in a delicate and expensive painted piece right in the worst spot possible. Nice one.
