I actually tried it this morning. Backed out of garage, seat belt on, parking brake on auto, started pulling forward slowly, opened door, car kept moving, did not stop. 2016 Lexus LS 460. Did not try with seat belt unfastened. Might try that tomorrow

Tell me how it goes with seat belt unfastened. Thing is, seat belt has to be unfastened for me to scoop up the newspaper....I'm not double jointed.

Exactly...that is the plan. We take out the carpets and remove the wallpaper. They can clean the tile floors and prep and paint the walls.

Agree.....floating roofs are ugly. Big grills are ugly, this one isn't too bad, but could be nicer.

I don't find that to be a nice looking SUV....personally.

Driver, don't take this the wrong way, but when you open the garage door, why don't you just walk over and pick up the paper before you drive the car out? Just seems a lot simpler. And safer!

Scooping up the paper has worked for me for about 10 years. It is a weekly, so not a daily thing. Usually we walk Gigi and pick up the paper. On rainy days she goes in the back yard, and I don't see the paper until I head out....driveway is curved so I don't know it is there until I actually see it lying there.

Next time I will put the car in park, unfasten the seat belt, get out and pick up the paper...no more scooping.

NO, NO...don't change now. There were some pretty good odds on Edmunds private server, for the premium dues paying members, and I have a good chance of winning if you fall out and get rolled over. Don't ruin this for me and the guys that put their bets in. :@

Mike, wtf??? Seriously, no more hospitals already. I know I hope to never go back. Hope you're at Coral Springs Medical this time!!

Snake....JMonroe....you guys are breaking me up. I like that Lacrosse stick. If I bought a Buick LaCrosse and had the stick that would be cool...I would be the envy of the neighborhood.

*I talked to the super in my brothers apartment. They wanted to measure the kitchen cabinets....I guess after 35 years they will replace them so they can get double the rent.

He told me once the apartment is empty, we have to do a walk around, with a check list. I think they would notice the wallpaper and carpets then, so best to take it out now!

And, I like a real newspaper.....or I miss all the ads.

Have you looked up renter rights in your state? In NJ, they have a list of life expectancies on rental furnishings. For example, 10 years for carpeting. So if you lived there for 10 years and completely destroyed the carpet, the landlord can't charge you for its replacement or even cleaning. Painted walls is 5 years. And so on.

*Driver, much ado about nothing. When tenants move the last thing they want to do is to clean up a landlord's apartment. They have their own new home or apartment to spruce up so why would they waste time and money on somebody's property.

As a landlord I am expected to clean up after the tenant has left, and I do. But for the new tenant I demand (and receive) first and last month rent as well as a security deposit. In your case just walk away and don't worry about removing the carpet or wallpaper, that is the landlord's cost of doing business. C'est tout.

When I rented both of my apartments I had lived in each for 7 years. Upon leaving I cleaned everything which included renting a carpet steam cleaner, wiping down all surfaces like the tops of kitchen cabinets, etc., filling all nail holes in the drywall where pictures has been hung and washing the walls. Got all of my damage deposit back in both instances.

Around here, I've heard it is a common game for the landlord (in apartments anyway, as nearly all seem to be owned by corporations or "trusts" for the inheritance elite) to charge the full cleaning fee/deposit if they find even a speck of dirt - so people often just walk away and pay the fee rather than spend time and money cleaning and then pay the same fee later.

It's been a very long time since we moved out of our apartment before moving into our first house but I seem to remember that my lease said something like "broom swept and dusted" (the apartment did not come with any carpeting). I also seem to remember that when our sons had their apartments their leases said something like, "broom swept and dusted and carpets vacuumed". Maybe that is a Burgh thing but we did not have to do anything more than that.

However, if your lease requires more and you agree, via signature, I don't know how you could legally get out of it.

Would be good to have checked but it was hard enough getting someone to take out the carpets and wallpaper. It says in the lease these items have to be removed.

I can't mess around. I would rather pay out a bit, get the deposit back, and not go to court. It is not my apartment, I am doing what I can to help out, but, I'd rather spend a bit more and know I won't have to go to court.

Like I say....when I watch the judges programs....people who leave apartments in rough shape always pay. And the judges go on about how unfair it is to the landlord. Because he makes a profit is not a reason to take advantage of them. And, the landlord was very good about allowing him to terminate his lease, he just signed for one year. He has been happy with the management company and his apartment over the years. His security deposit might be $500.....it sounds like the work will cost $600....not worth the aggravation of trying to dodge it.

sda, I agree with you. We are abiding by the terms of the contract. The landlord fulfilled his obligations, it is only fair we do the same....it is called being civilized.

Fringe rains of subtropical storm Albert went through in the last hour or so. Forecasters are predicting "buckets" of rain overnight. I haven't checked the local KRoger to see if lots of folks have gone to stock up on bread and milk the way they do when the forecasters say "snow."

It was an interesting weekend traffic-wise on the local roads. Lots of folks driving as if they haven't driven before. I thought of Fintail and some of his impressions of driver skills in Seattle.

On the interstate Monday, I was passed by several cars through downtown Dayton. They didn't know the state patrol had been staging double car speed checks in downtown since the city police just rely on their radar cameras for traffic control and quit patrolling I75 downtown in any manner I can see.

A Ford 150 that passed me in downtown Dayton setting his own speed limit, was pulled over at one of the favorite speed control areas 10 miles south. At least he didn't try tailgating at 10 over in the left lane of 3/4.

I almost honked at him on the roadside with our Men In Blue, but I had tried to tell them earlier that 10 over was all you could hope for. Lots of tickets passed out over the 4-day holiday weekend on I70 and I75.

Saw a story in a couple of places. Chrysler brand could get the axe on Friday.
Chrysler has only 2 models now, 300 and Pacifica.
Both could be rebranded as Dodge.
I'm thinking 300 to Super Charger.

could be an old story. That idea/rumor has been floating around for years. Biggest problem right at the moment is that they'd have to go through the trouble of renaming FCA. Not sure they'd want to go through all that trouble and rebranding expense. Would be easier just to make all Dodge products Chrysler products and kill that brand.

I was thinking the same thing but I don't recall seeing any Chrysler ads lately. Not a good sign. When they axed Plymouth that's how it started.

Since the landlord is going to remodel the apartment anyway, why do you ask him if he can keep the security deposit and you leave the carpet and wallpaper?
That way it's no money out of his pocket on the security deposit and he can just add the removal to the remodeler list of tasks.

If you're coming westbound on I70, watch from 79 to 66 mile markers more than usual. That's near London (Ohio not England) where there's a patrol post headquarters for the State.

There's a bridge at mm #48 that has been built for more lanes than the current 3. There's concrete abutement and a trooper car can back onto the unused middle lanes and be partially blocked from view by the concrete wall. He's perpendicular to the traffic lanes.

I don't consider them speed traps because I think they're more lenient than about 10 over. Today I saw a trooper on I70 backed perpendicular to traffic on the side. I was doing over 65, the limit in the populated area, and car went past in the third/inside lane who had to be doing 75 and was going faster than most on the 3-lane road. Trooper had clear area to pull out and pursue easily; he did not. An Alaska car caught up to me a minute later and he was going even faster. I suspect they were looking for more than 10 over or some profiling signs like driving a cargo van or box truck or a semi truck. We have a good record of drug busts from this patrol post that covers west to Indiana line.

Ohio cops and speeding tickets for small infractions - just another mode of taxing as business and people leave high tax and hassle states. I don't think the Midwest and Northeast really get it yet.

People are leaving Illinois and California in significant numbers -- voting with their feet. They're being replaced, if at all, by people who, let's say, don't contribute as much to the economy. Interesting to watch.

We're getting now too. So far for us it has been light rains but the news is stating some areas are getting heavy thunderstorms.
