OK here are the directions to Rocks St. Pk. for all of those coming from the South.

Take I-95 North to exit 74 "Rt. 152" (aka Mountain Road)turn left at the light on Rt.152. Go 10 miles to Rt. 165 (aka Baldwin Mill Rd) turn right at light on Rt.165 for 12 miles to Rt. 24. Turn right at flashing light. 2 miles to St. Clairs Bridge Rd. (immediately after crossing the bridge) turn right on S.C. Br. Rd (only choice) go 0.8 miles turn left and go up the hill "King & Queen Seat". (In the snow this hill would be a good test of AWD) Look for a white 99 Forester S and let the event begin.

I don't think there will be a $2 fee ... depends on headcount. Mike .. you're the headcount guy right? There will be 2 from this house.

I'm trying to borrow a SUBARU sign from the local dealer ... we'll see.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
We should get one of those "Subaru parking only" signs for fun.

I'll have to find that Forester wrist watch I was eyeballing. Too bad I wasn't able to find a logo shirt I liked at the LL Bean outlet this weekend (it rained at the beach so we shopped instead).

    What time again?

    If you're curious, go to:

    www.casio.com

Click on the time pieces tab. Then click on Forester to check them out. They're extremely sophisticated - barometers, altimeters, thermometers, digital compass, etc.

They're $40 and up. Costco had one model for $20, I knew I should have bought it!

PS Looks like no marketing tie-ins

Do we have a start time? I think Mike would prefer earlier rather than later. I am open, as long as I get back to Bawlmer by the evening.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Any time is OK with me. Cousin cannot go, so it's just the 4 of us in my Forester.

Looking forward to a nice trail to hike!

PS Lucien: you gonna play some muse-ack for us?

I have accepted a position at a company on the Left Coast and therefore will be *driving* across the country. I leave PA on or around the 21st of June, due to arrive the 27th or 28th in CA, so I'll have some time to meander. My plans so far include staying to a northerly route due to the season, stopping at friends' in Pittsburgh, and possibly seeing a dear old long-lost friend in Tahoe. Other than that I'm open to suggestions! Thought I might swing by the Subie plant; do they offer tours to people coming in off the street?

I am also going to keep mileage logs; I might even play around with octanes to see if they make a pinch of difference. BTW juice, you'd better watch out; my last highway tank came in at 26.6 mpg. I'm catching you!

    Regards,
    WDB
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
You da man! Though I haven't broken out the calculator, I think my last one rounds up to 28mpg.

    Catch me if you can!

Cross country? I'm jealous. What a trip that could be. Try to take the long way, via mountain roads. The PA turnpike is pretty lame, narrow and full of trucks, with only slight hills.

See if you can head West first, then North, avoiding 270/70 and the PA turnpike. It may be the only practical route, though.

Haven't driven past Pitt in that direction myself, so I'll let the other step in with suggestions.

PS Too bad, we'll miss you at the Soob events on the right coast :o)
  • barresa11barresa11 Member Posts: 277
Seems to me, from my vantage point in Seattle and looking south, we are on the right coast and you Soobians are on the left coast! :-) Of course, if we're talking politics (oh, oh, no, no) then you may be right, especially w/CA in the mix.

Rats! Arriving in DC area late on the 11th for 2 weeks so I'll just barely miss the party.

WDB: If it was me I'd take 80 thru Nebraska then drop down to Denver and pick-up 70 (80 is slightly more scenic than 70 from the Missisippi to the Rockies though both are pretty boring drives). Lots of off road possibilites in Colorado and Utah as well as numerous Natl Parks. Some of my favorites are (from east to west): Rocky Mtn (CO), Arches, Bryce Canyon, and Zion (all UT). Shoot, I'm getting jealous just thinking about it.

27.5 mpg on my very first tank of gas! (Mostly highway driving)

The time is getting near. Speaking of time ... how does 10 am strike you folks? It will give you time for a good hike before lunch. I will bring charcoal for those who wish to grill and a large watermelon for the kids (young & old).

Start cleaning your vehicles now ... there will be a prize for the cleanest Sub ... well, not really .. but an interesting idea. No word yet on the Subaru banner.

Mike .. I need the final estimate for the Ranger at Rocks as soon as you have it.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Heck, I've driven down Highway 1 from SF to Big Sur, and I'd say you're on the right coast and we're on the WRONG coast ;)

Frank: love that blue color, too. If you're getting 27.5 now, it only gets better when the engine is less "green". Did you spring for the world's largest moonroof?

Things are looking better all the time, folks!

10am sounds good to me. I'll probably be there all day, if anyone's coming a bit late.

All I can reveal is this, there will be a nice surprise for those that can attend. I've got a couple of minor last minute mods to show off, plus some freebies I can't elaborate on; it would blow the surprise!

PS The 'ster should be clean, especially with my new toy (pressure washer, more details in the exterior cleaning topic)

If you go sufficiently north (or are willing to detour northwards from Denver or so) you could visit Yellowstone and/or the Grand Teton area. Late June is a good time for these (aside from crowds). Arches and many of the other the Utah parks are pretty hot by this time of year -- Zion is only at 3000 ft, for instance, and when I was there last September, we had nighttime lows of about 72.

Whereabouts in Calif. are you landing?

    Chris
  • miksmimiksmi Member Posts: 1,246
Frank, what time are you arriving? Juice said he's hanging around all day. Not sure on my plans though I think coasters at Six Flags are also in order if my boss agrees. Even if you can't make this meet, I'd be happy to meet up with during your 2 weeks here. Post here or email me (and juice) with the details.

Re: the count, I emailed it to everyone who's going so check yours. Let's keep the details off air so we don't bore everyone else to tears. Ya know, like my coaster posts.

Thanks for the encouragement and ideas. I'm still pounding away at my current job and they've naturally enough poured everything on top of me that they can in the limited time they have left to do so; I'll probably be snowed under for the rest of this week but next week I plan to ease up and start looking at maps and whatnot. I'll be working in Redwood City for 4 months or so after which I should be driving back to PA.

My original idea was to head north immediately since I have always wanted to drive PA 6 west across the state. However since I am going to visit folks in Pittsburgh I'll probably stay in the southern regions of the state and take the turnpike; I'll be coming back in October so maybe I can hit 6 then. After that, and possibly the Subie factory, I was planning on making a hard run west until I hit the Rockies and spend my extra time out that way, so I really appreciate the ideas for sights to see out there.

Juice: Didn't get the monster moonroof mainly because I didn't care for the gold accented wheels that are also part of the premimum package. Had it been a stand-alone option, I would have gotten it.

    Frank
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Frank - I hear you. I prefer the plain S wheels myself, though the roof matters more to me.

Hey, did someone mention snow? :)

Forecast for Baltimore on Sunday calls for Partly Cloudy, low of 70 and high of 95. No rain, though.

Sounds good. I'm sure we'll find some shade for heat relief. Bring your bathing suits!

I may be later than 10am. Looks a bit further than I though after peeking at a map, but I should make it by 11am, maybe a bit earlier. We can do a morning hike, then lunch, then you guys can throw me in the lake!

    Juice,

I hate to disappoint you ... but .. no lake. There is a flowing stream (river) that goes through the park though. As for getting tossed in .. they don't call it "Rocks" for nothing. Tubing is a real possibility! Got a tube?

Lots of shade in the immediate area. Also, hiking to the "King & Queen Seat" is a must.

I want to replace the factory speakers in my Forester. Any ideas?

LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING ... EVERYBODY AT THE ROCKS.

    Mike,

Follow the directions contained in msg. #106 above. It's a nice country ride and they lead you to an area called the "King & Queen Seat". I'll be there at 10am or so ... just look for a clean white 99S. The local dealer couldn't/wouldn't part with a SUBARU banner. There are BBQ pits, picnic tables, etc. everywhere. I'll have a cooler full of ice - watermelon - charcoal and stuff for all to use/consume. Looks like it's gonna be a hot one. I think Juice has a 75hp outboard hooked up to an inner-tube ... I don't know if he can pull skiers or not :)

Well it was 95 degrees F and a "Code Red" (unhealthy air) day but we had a lot of fun at Rocks State Park. I can't believe I've seen so little of my own state; meeting up w/Subarites is a great way to do it. Hutch, thanks again for suggesting a such a beautiful venue and for writing up detailed directions. Hope Lynn is recovering from whatever bit her. Lucien, nice to put a face on our resident wine consultant; great stories of the BMW driving school and Kirsten is a saint! An RS and an Integra drove from New Market, MD (near Frederick) with 4 people; cool! Juice handed out nice Subaru baseball hats, courtesy of Darlene at mailto:qsubaru@aol.com. Juice took pix which I'm sure he'll have have up in a few days. Looking forward to the next (as yet not planned) event.

  • francophilefrancophile Member Posts: 667
I'm happy to hear everyone had a good time and that the venue was pleasant. But--baseball caps? I was at home trying to get things done prior to my absence, slaving away over a hot lawn mower, when I could have been at a park where juice was giving out baseball caps? SUBARU baseball caps?!?

    Arrrgghhh!

Well at least I don't have to worry about having missed the rocky surroundings where you had your picnic. I live in Rockland Township, which is very appropriately named. We have plenty of the goonies everywhere. In fact the structure I live in is made of a bunch of the blasted things piled on top of one another; one of my weekend pleasantries was to apply mortar to an interior wall. I'd have rather been cavorting with you all!

    Cheers,

Don't fret, there were a few extras that I'll save for the next event.

Besides the full melt-down temperatures, t'was a good time indeed. 5 Subarus showed up, and noone came alone.

We hiked over to the King and Queen seat, though we couldn't figure out which was which. Nice views, and a cliff-like drop were breath-taking.

We then hiked down a steep trail to the "rapids", which ran about as fast as my bath tub. :o)

I had baby girl on my back (30+ pounds, plus the back pack), so Hutch drove over and saved part of the group from the hike (climb?) back up. So Mike and family, plus myself (sans Tatiana) made the return trip on foot.

Well, not exactly. Mike's youngest, clever as his dad and probably a future enginerd, managed to come up with a style his own. Used all four limbs, and kept low to the ground, just like, well, a Subaru!

After a BBQ and some shop talk, we hit the water falls. Now THERE was some moving water!

Kirsten impressed everyone - she was the only one with the energy to climb to the top of the falls even after hiking.

Look for new pages on my site soon.

NEways, hutch, keep us posted on that post-harvest idea of yours...;-)

    p.s. anyone considering Bug Bomb's June 25 i-meet?
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Yes but it was HOT! On the drive back, when the sun was no longer beating down, I saw a sign that said it was still 97 degrees!

I've been dreaming of driving up that monster hill Hutch mentioned...

Bug Bomb was the guy in the RS that showed up, for the curious ones out there. He mentioned an i Club meet half way between Baltimore and Frederick for June 25th, though at someone else's house.

I can't make that one, but I'll take a rain check. If you get details, post them here for other folks that may want to go (WDB, RSholland, etc.).

Maybe we could do something in August, perhaps at Cunningham Falls. I still have some free Subaru hats to give away!

    Hey all you Rock-ers,

Had a good time at the Rocks. Glad everyone could make it. It helps to put faces to names. What I was most impressed with was what a truly nice bunch of people I met.
Mike ... wonderful family. Your oldest is going to invent something significant ... warp engines or something .. I'm sure. Smart kid! Actually knew who Ty Cobb was.
Juice .. good to finally meet you .. your a encyclopedia of auto info. Your wife is a really cool lady. As regards Tatiana ... ever need a babysitter ..... ya may not get her back though.
Lucien and Kirsten .. really good to meet you two. Loosh .. don't know how you keep up! Last but not least .. the Bug Bomb-ers from New Market. Talked to a bunch of you guys .. don't think I ever got a name but it was good meeting you.
I'll keep everybody updated about a "Farmer Brown Field Day" this fall. May have to keep that one private. Could get out of hand easily.
P.S. Mike, Lynn is doing fine. The one large ear looks good on her. Oh yeah, Juice ... I found my phone!!! Thanks for the fast photos.
    See Ya

Hutch - no, you da man. Thanks for taking the time to plan it, for excellent directions, for the charcoal (love those burgers!), and in general for the good company. I think you and Lynn have already proven how good you are with Tati - you can baby sit any time.

I laughed when the person at the entrance booth said "Yous with the Subaru people? They're over there!". She must've been from Boston.

Glad to hear Lynn is well, and that you found the phone (miracle).

Thanks for the encyclopedia comment, though my wife would add "useless" to the information comment...too bad there's no automotive week on Jeopardy.

Thanks, Lucien, I'd heard that. We used a more Brazilianesque spelling, so it's Tatiana.

I guess I'll just have to start some Left Coast events, in the hopes of making all of you jealous!

BTW they say "yous" in Philly too although they spell it "youse" ;-)

  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Maybe she was from Philly, then. She did say "park over there" without the PAAHK pronunciation.

Apologies to our Bostonian friends if I've offended anyone. We have a long-term house guest from Boston, and after two months I've memorized many of his language quirks!

WDB, I think Chris (torek) is the man with whom to hook up for Left Coast events. See his profile for his website URL and check out some of the places he's been -- this man, like Dave (dzartman), knows how to travel! Speaking of Dave Zartman, please update your profile with the URL of your website so everyone can easily find it (it's too good not to share).

Hutch, Hehe, I don't know if he'll invent warp drive; I'd settle for a less expensive Torsen differential, myself ;) Thanks for the compliment.

Bringing over the dialogue that has been started in the Modifications sections about a bunch of us getting together sometime this summer, somewhere between BC and Oregon, doing something. How's that for tentative planning? :-) Any ideas out there? Suffice to say, we will be owing Juice some pictures!

you just load up way too much stuff with your camping gear (now that you have room in an Outback or Forester), pick a mountain or two, and start driving! The hard part is getting the TIME...

(I actually have something like 5 weeks of vacation time built up, but have things I must do rather than taking vacation. Will be taking 2 weeks of it this summer to go to Oregon and Washington though, with the parents. No tents this time, just AAA motels. :-) )

(Alcyone is the brightest star in the constellation we in the West call "The Pleiades" or The "Seven Sisters"; in the East it is known as "Subaru".)

Alcyone must have heard my lament about not getting a chance at receiving a Subaru cap from juice; the other day my folks came over after doing a fund raising walk, and what should appear in my dad's hand but a Subaru cap! Life is funny sometimes.

The Pacific Northwest Subaru Enthusiasts Club will be hosting a get-together. Old and new, if you drive a Subaru and and enjoy it, you’re encouraged to show up.

    Where:
Wenberg State Park, Smokey Point/Arlington, WA
    http://www.pacifier.com/~adam/pnwsec.htm

    When:
Sunday July 16th Starting around 11:00am

Current members of the PNWSEC may attend the event free of charge. Non-members of PNWSEC can come to the event, and a small food/parking fee, to be determined, will be charged at the event.

At this time, PNWSEC is NOT accepting new members, and likely will not until the day of or after. This is due to a change in the structure and layout of the club.

There will be food and soft drinks for all. Food will also be provided for people with vegetarian diets. Bottled water will NOT be provided, if you have a need for bottled water you will need to bring your own.

There will also likely be at least one full-blown SCCA ProRally Subaru in attendance, and there will be a show with awards in different classes (custom & stock, Early Subarus, Legacy/Impreza class Subarus, overall best of show, highest mileage, and maybe the most dirtiest .

The classes and awards are as follows:

    Highest Mileage:
Group One: This is for all Subarus made through 1989. 5-digit odometer vehicles must provide adequate documentation of number of times the odometer has rolled over. (3 awards)
Group Two: Everything from '90 to 2001. (3 awards)

    Show:
Stock Class: All stock or close-to-stock cars are eligible for this. The closer to stock the better, extra points for maintaining a dead stock car the older it gets. (3 awards)
Custom Cosmetics: All cars are eligible for this. We're concerned about things you can see on the exterior of the car or inside the passenger cabin. The more you do, the better. The cleaner it looks, the better. (3 awards)
Custom Mechanical: All cars are eligible for this. This has to do obviously with what mechanical adjustments you've done. (3 awards)

    Best in Show:
Older Classes: All Subarus through '84 including BRATs and Hatchbacks made thru '87 and '89 respectively. (ONE award)
Best in Show: Loyale Classes: All Subarus from '85 to '89 including XTs, XT6s, Loyales, and Justies thru '94. (ONE award)
Best in Show: Legacy and Impreza Classes: All Legacy, Impreza, and SVX variants. (ONE award)

Everyone may participate in as many classes as they like, as long as their car qualifies. Best of luck to all participants.

For those of you with 5-digit odometers who wish to compete in the highest mileage classes - adequate documentation (such as chronologically dated service receipts) will be required to show proof of actual mileage (i.e. how many times the odometer has gone around)

Smart Service, Inc. should be there with their information booth, and may also be holding another raffle like last year.

Everyone is more than welcome to bring any Subaru memorabilia or parts to sell to other people.

For the out-of-towners, there's camping at the park itself, and if the park is full, Kayak Point is only another three or so miles up the road.

We need to know how many cars and people we have showing up. For each of you that are planning to come, tell me how many vehicles and how many bodies you are bringing.

    Please email me your response.
    adam@pacifier.com

I don't stop by here very often(this is the first time actually)

Or follow this link for more info.

Just checked on Mapquest. Gettysburg is just north of the PA border, about 70 miles from DC, maybe an hour and 15 or so. Pretty close by!

Charlottesville is a bit further. It's 125 miles south southwest, about 2.5 hours. I took my sister there to visit the UVA campus a while back.

Eric Kriemelmeyer (eric-i Club, eric_k-Edmunds; he's an auto-crosser [quite good I might add] and recently posted in the Meet the Members topic here and here) is organizing a Subaru-only Summit Point Raceway (directions) Friday At The Track.

Note: This is NOT racing. It is a driver education event (really -- read the i Club thread below).

"We can book up a FATT session and practically have the track to ourselves." Nothing but Subes at the track? Sounds like fun to me!

This is where Lucien attended driving school with the BMW club. I'm wondering if I would get more/better driver instruction if I joined the BMW club and attended one of their schools (as Lucien did) or go to FATT with the 2.5RS folks from i Club. Both sound like a lot of fun.

If you're interested in more info, read this post in the Mid Atlantic forum of i Club. Read all of it before you ask questions.

Lucien, how much was the BMW school? And since you've got experience with the BMW school, we'd appreciate your insight. Thanks.
