or was it Lancaster County? Whatever... The Covered Bridge Tour was a smashing success, in spite of Paisan's best efforts to get us lost, and keep us lost. ;)

Over 40 cars, including a bunch of Saabs, it was a terrific day! Great weather. Great roads. Great company. Great time.

    Garry thanks! :)

Hey don't blame me bob! It was Juice's fault, I was only driving (albeit Mach 3!)

At least you couldn't ask for better roads to get lost on. :)

It was a good time. A little on the long side of comfortable but a good time. I had to bail out early, my companion gets car sick and after trying to follow Paisan for 50 miles or so she was getting green. Not to mention dodging road kill Amish with Italian tire tracks on their backs. A reoccuring comment .. "boy, this looks familiar.. have we been here before?" paints the picture well.

Note for future reference: If Marco Polo had employed the services of Paisan & Juice for navigation .. he'd still be lost! No China, no spaghetti, silk .. just lost! Dead & Lost.

Glad to hear you had a good time.

Mike S- Since I lost the famous wdb "Bridal Shower" case, I've decided to go back to minding my own business ;-)

Glad to see you made it home. We were about to take bets that you would never find your way out of Lancaster County. :)

Had a great time and enjoyed meeting Juice and Bob. Hutch, I was the blue OB in back of you. Thanks to Paisan for caravaning both ways. Thanks to Gary for organizing it as well.

Just wanted to share a fun event that I went to on Sunday. I met up w/some i-club members in Seattle. We traveled down to Lacey,WA (about 60 miles south of Seattle) to a Shopko parking lot. Along the way we picked up another 6 people waiting for us at a reststop. We had about 12 Subarus doing our version of a Chinese Dragon during New Years on I-5. The sight of all of us changing lanes like a Mazda "Zoom-Zoom" commercial was priceless. We had a total of about 40 people meeting in Lacey. I was the only WRX wagon for part of the time (kind of felt like a celebrity w/all the attention) until a salesmanager from Melody's in Kirkland, WA brought a new white auto WRX wagon to the meet (my silver still looks better, IMHO). His dealership paid for all of us to have pizza later. All and all it was a fun time to spend w/a bunch of Soobie enthusiasts!

    Sounds cool Stephen!

Our Tour was fun. Hutch - you try navigating at Mach 3 with a FRS in one hand and a map in the other, all while holding on to the "OH SH&%" bar the whole time. All this on never seen before roads with no signs!

Garry said he had 12 RSVPs and 50 cars showed up (28 Soobs, 14 Saabs, a SHO-engined wagon and a Prelude). Hmm, who did not RSVP? *cough* Hutch *cough* ;-)

It's amazing that we only missed two turns the whole time, and one was because of a mistake in the directions (it turns out Rt 272 was the 2nd stop sign, not the first). Heck, even the other was a hidden driveway that none of us could find!

I did get to know the feeling of co-piloting in a rally, however. Is Richard Burns hiring? ;-)

The bridges were OK, but like Hutch said, a bit of deja vu after a while. I liked seeing the culture contrast (with all the Amish), the vistas, the tulips, the Clydesdale horses and the farms - very nice. Later on we saw the Harley Davidson factory, too.

I got to take a spin in paisan's XT6, and what stood out in my mind the most was how well the powertrain was working after over a decade of use (and abuse) and 150k miles. Shifts were smooth, torque was good and immediate, only the muffler was shot.

The interior also impressed me, with gauges galore except no passenger fear-level meter, unfortunately :oO. Nice carpeting, head liner, and sun visors far nicer than those in my Forester.

It even managed a little off-road foray.

The "FREE CAR" Tempo was hilarious. On the side of the road, up for grabs. People kept driving by. Hysterical. And earlier we saw an Escort being towed away by a pickup with only a chain. Fuel for paisan/Kate's anti-Ford sentiment.

I'll get some photos up soon.

Sounds like it was a great time!

I will leave the link in the Resource box for a bit longer...just in case anyone is curious as to what they missed.

Please let me know of any other future events planned. If there is an informational link, I'll be more than happy to put it in the Resource box.

    Thanks!

Great shots! Thanks for sharing them. Carol and I dallied a bit on those roads on our way home from Balto this morning. I half expected to see Subies wrapped around a tree or two ;-)

It's funny to hear folks talk about, "Hey, doesn't that bridge look just like the last one?" because I get the same feeling when I go through there. We used to do a LOT of bicycling on those roads, and after a while, well, a cow is a cow and a horse is a horse and buggy is just another buggy (although I did see a pretty cool pickup-truck-style one this morning). On bikes though the bridges always hold a giant question mark; which way do the floorboards run? If they're laid across the direction of travel, no big deal. However if they run in the same direction, you really have to watch that you don't get a tire caught in one of the joints. I had a friend do that once, causing him to lose his balance and bash into the side of the bridge with his leg, arm and shoulder. He didn't fall, he just kind of leaned into the bridge wall; I was riding very near to him and could hear going, "ooh! ooh! ow! ouch!" as he continued to graze the wall. He bounced along like that until he exited the bridge, whereupon he stopped and we pulled splinters and cleaned and patched him sufficiently to get him back to his car. No permanent damage except to his ego. I still laugh when I think about it because it was the only incident I have ever seen where a cyclist crashed without falling down!

Sorry I missed you all. You had a gorgeous day. For consolation I got to drive a VW Rabbit convertible, which was no thrill whatsoever.

    Cheers,
    -wdb

Another obstacle would be the, uh, "emissions" from the horses on the road.

Guess there is no such thing as a zero-emissions vehicle!

Here are a couple of pics from the mini meet we had last Sunday in Lacey, WA.

Click on link below, go into "Forums". Scroll down to Northwest Club and click. Go to "mini meet pix are up" by SubieGal and click on this. My car is the silver WRX w/the hood up on the right in the first pic and the one in the last pic w/hood up.

knew right after I posted link that it would be more user-friendly to post a direct link. Thanks Dennis for revised link.

These mini-meets are fun. It's great to put a face w/a name.

Hey...Ross, Drew when are you guys going to hook up w/any of these meets? I try to keep up on the Vancouver chapter as well. I just missed one about a month ago.

Looks like fun. Now that the new Impreza is out there seems to be a lot more variety at meets. Before it was a dozen RSs and maybe one other vehicle (usually mine!).

Hey folks, just wanted to invite anyone interested in a weekend of off-roading in Uwharrie Forest, NC to come with the guys from the Isuzu group(s). Here is the important Info:

    Date: July 20-22

    Where: UWharrie, NC

    What: Off-roading and Camping Trip.

I checked with the Isuzu guys and they said that the Subies shouldn't have any problems since Uwharrie is relatively tame, unless you choose to go for the hard stuff. It should be a fun weekend, Kids and pets are welcome and encouraged. More details can be found at: http://www.outdoorwire.com/ubb/Forum68/HTML/004378.html

    Cary,
When the upgraded i-club (www.i-club.com) is up and running again, try the Southeast Forum there.
Recently there was a big get-together in Tampa that featured reps from Prodrive, the world rally car builders.

Now that you are back I can start hammering you to come to the Uwharrie Off-road trip with the Isuzu guys. They are actually pretty excited that Patti may bring a VDC with her if she comes. July 20-22 in NC. Camping, off-roading should be fun.

There are actually more than 3 Subarus down here...there must be at least 5 or 6..even saw 2 SVXs within the last 2 weeks (that is, when you can see betwwen the smoke from the Everglades fires). The local dealers have around 10 WRXs between them.

    PS Welcome back

Would you believe I saw three Azteks last Tuesday and nary a Subaru all day here in southern Florida! Good thing was I didn't get sick looking at the GM wonder vehicles!

I agree. I think we saw one or two Subies the entire time we were in Orlando.

I think I must have said this somewhere before but Subarus aren't very common in the South to begin with. I grew up in SC and went to college and grad school in GA and never saw many of them. That being said, I did see a good many of them in the mountains of GA, SC, NC and TN being used by outdoor recreation type folks - those who'd be considered Subaru's typical target market. Subarus were (and are) considered to be ideal kayaker shuttle cars, and a good friend in Atlanta's experience with them helped convince me to buy mine.

My son lives in San Antonio, TX, and there are very few Subies on the roads there. I haven't ventured too far from the metropolitan area; could be that there are more out in the boonies.

I'm sure SOA is hoping the WRX marketing will change people's perception of Subaru as being only a snow-belt vehicle.

Speaking of Subaru marketing, I think Subaru has probably more TV advertising than any other vehicle sold in the USA. Their commercials are everywhere.

Here in Austin its mainly Foresters for the people with the SUV wannabee complex and Outback base models for the rest. Still not a very common car. You'll say one a day maybe. Trucks and Big SUV's rule the roads (If I had a dollar for every Expedition that almost hits me I'd be retired).
  • francophilefrancophile Member Posts: 667
While it is true that one tends to see more of a certain car after one buys that same car, I still think what happened to me yesterday was unique enough to merit comment. Herewith, a brief tale of seeing Subies in Pennsylvania, out here on the cusp between megalopolis and wilderness.

As I drove into the supermarket parking lot I noticed a Forester getting gas at the pumps. Another Forester was driving out of the lot. A Legacy wagon followed me (Legacy sedan) into the lot. I parked my car in the first convenient space, next to another Legacy sedan. I looked over and noticed that the Legacy wagon which followed me into the lot was parking next to another Legacy wagon.

    Whoa.

    Cheers,

While I think you hit the nail somewhat on the head, I don't think everyone with a Forester has an "SUV wannabe" mentality. I say that even though SoA no doubt markets it that way. (Cute ad with Hogan and the guy with the flattop and the 4WD school bus, BTW.)

The only SUV I looked at when I started shopping for the Forester was the Nissan Xterra, and I quickly wrote that off once I sat in it. much less drove it. I chose the Forester over the Legacy GT and (Legacy) Outback wagons because of its better power to weight ratio (this was pre H6 and pre WRX, mind you) and better handling on varied terrain cf. the Legacy GT. Audi and Volvo were right out.

Dennis: a high school classmate had one of the first BRATs. It hadn't rusted away before I went off to college.
