    My mom called our Buick Electra "Charlie Brown", in an affectionate way. The car lasted more than a decade despite the abuse of 3 sons. A later car was called "Snoopy" but it just wasn't the same.

    Web stuff doesn't hurt, but in this area there seems to be an overflow of that type of talent after the dot-bombs. I asked around, and my friends at AMS and Qualcomm say they've had layoffs recently.

    Ironically, the more boring areas like data mining and systems integration, stuff like that, have a higher demand, it seems.

    Thanks for the advice, folks, I'll take a look...actually, after 20 years of IT, I wouldn't mind giving it up at all. Susan and I are thinking about the idea of going to Italy for a year and apprentice with a gelato maker (great place of the Ponte Vecchio in Florence), and coming back to open an ice-cream, pannini, and coffee bar. Those that I frequented in Italy do incredibly well, even with one every 30 feet or so.

    Per Subaru, the 3rd generation Legacy fuel tank holds 16.9 US gallons. Low fuel light illuminates at (about) 2.5G, of which 1.5G is usable and 1G unusable. So, a 16.9G tank will accept about 15.9G.

    Well, my wife filled up 16.255 gallons! :D

    Yes, perhaps the Costco pump gauge was miscalibrated. No, she didn't let it get that low intentionally, I did (inadvertently). Yes, she was cell phone-enabled before leaving for the record-breaking event. No, I wouldn't do it again.

    FYI, here's email from SoA:

    The fuel tank in your '00 Legacy GT Wagon holds 16.9 US gallons. When the low fuel light comes on, you have approximately 2&1/2 gallons remaining in your tank. Out of this 2&1/2 gallons, approximately 1&1/2 is usable. Therefore, there is about 1 gallon of unusable fuel in the tank.

    So here's the question: What's the most fuel you've put into the tank? (Forester and Impreza owners, please note your tank's capacity)

    My Trooper is rated at 21.5gal. I coasted in on a totally empty tank to a gas station recently and put in 21.650 gallons. So it was pretty accurite @ 21.5gal.

    I just found out that I'll have the Baja for the weekend on the 3rd.

    I post information as soon as I put it through its paces.

    Sorry I haven't been on top of things here. They are trying to fix my laptop so I can chat on Thursdays, so I can only get onto these boards during the work day.

    I just got back from playing golf with all the other old-timers. Someone tipped off the local wildlife that I was playing. There were quite a few turkey vultures flying overhead during the entire round. Actually I'm still a youngster. I can't start collecting my pension until 1 November. My grandmothers were born in 1879 & 1881. Not surprising, neither of them drives a Subaru (lame attempt to be on topic).

    Pretty impressive about a father born in 1889. My grandpa was born in the blizzard of 1888. He wasn't in the service, said he was too young for one war and too old for the other. It was probably because he worked for railroads all his life. His father died before he was born but was a cavalry man and performed in traveling circuses before he settled down. My grandpa told me he was able to get to see Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show and Calamity Jane because the ticket takers knew his father. My grandfather would never believe how he is now immortalized in Edmunds backup files, he never owned a car.

    Man, Patti. You get all the fun! SoA should also give you toys to put in the back of the Baja as well, like a wave runner to get the "full" Baja experience.

    Yeah - I think I should get all of the toys too! How else will I be able to judge it's ability to carry things, beach driving, etc.! I'll tell my boss that you think it is the right thing to do.

    Mike - I kind of doubt it. We only have two of them here and we're very limited on how many days we can have one.

    In fact, the only reason I'm getting it for the weekend is that our Director wants me to be able to report on it for you folks. He's giving me his slot. (He's a very nice guy ;~} ) We have to do a very detailed report on our "findings".

    But - - - a girl can try! I'll let you know!

    Since you'll have it on the 9-11th I'm willing to put together a short notice run on the 11th. e-mail me and let me know. Then the folks here could actually see and feel it! How would that be for reporting to us!!! :)

    Charlie's actually a good sleeper. He's out for a good 4-5 hours straight at night. I'm back at work, but I miss the lil' fella.

    paisan: you must've filled up the filler neck!

    Mike: 15.282 on my Forester, which has a capacity of 15.9. That tank was when I borrowed Bob's trailer to tow wood chips back home. Got just 23.3mpg on that tank, though that's to be expected with 1500 lbs to pull.

    FYI - a friend and co-worker is going to try to access the chat tonight also. She's trying to help me with my problem with accessing it.

    Her name is Kathleen, so if she gets it, you'll know who she is.

    It does not look good for me, again, tonight. At 8:40, I got the screen that told me that the chat was not open at this time. At 8:50, I got a connection time out. If someone can find out from Moderator Bob what time he opened the room, it might help us figure this out.

    They enticed me into the Balance Transfer with 0.00 APR for 9 months... but it was not until the very last page of applications where they revealed 3% (max $50) transaction charge for BT made in that introductory period. Arrgh!

    Don't know why it needs to be a gallon, but I would imagine tanks are designed to leave some amount behind to prevent any debris from clogging up the fuel lines.

    I'm having two exchange students from Europe in my house and they would like to see our US of A for kind of free.I know there is a place in NYC where you can get a job driving somebody else car,let say,from New York to Florida or California.     the fuel pump does not sit directly in the bottom of most tanks, or at least the inlet doesn't, hence there is always some fuel below the inlet.many pumps also need the fuel for lubrication. or so I've been told!

    Sat in the SVX over the weekend and started it up, found some cool stuff.

    1) Lighted Key ring on column
    2) Lighted Key ring on Driver's door (when you hit the alarm or open/close the door the ring around where the outside ring lights up)
    3) turning on the interior dome light also turns on lights under the dash to illuminate the foot area.
    4) Strut type/non intrusive hinges on the trunklid, struts on hood as well

    Regarding item #2, of all the cars in the world to share this feature, my 1985 Mazda 323 had this until it broke around 1990. I about fell over the first time I noticed it. Seemed out of place even then.

    In winter mode the wipers will come to rest about 3-4" up on the windshield so that they don't try to compress the snow down under the hood area where you'd normally have your wipers rest. This is good because you are less likely to burn out the motor if the snow isn't cleaned out completely. The XT6 also had this. :)

    Subaru probably says that last gallon is unusable because people by nature like to push limits, and they don't want you to run out of gas! The cost of their roadside assistance program is probably lower because of that little low fuel warning light.

    paisan: cool stuff. Little things like that only come on a car with no costs spared. I doubt most luxury cars have all those today.

    Porsche 911 owners pay an extra $725 for that footwell lighting!

    HI! Although I'm new to this community, I'm not new to Subaru. In 1980, I purchased a 1974 DL from a friend. The car had a weak heart; it sucked a valve right around 100,000. I didn't even look at Subarus again until the early 90's, and I have just recently purchased Subarus #6 & 7. I had a '92 Legacy wagon - fwd only :-( . Two of us survived serious crashes in the car (my oldest son totalled the car in the 2nd crash). We bought that son a '94 Impreza - he fell asleep on the highway, took out 6 gaurdrail posts, woke up, then ran a mile to the nearest payphone - the car was totalled; he was fine! I had a '93 Legacy L sedan. I later sold that car - no accidents! Afterwards I purchased a '96 Legacy LS sedan - loved the car. My other son took a bad curve too quickly in the rain and suceeded in landing it on the roof. His only injury? - scratches on his forearms from crawling through the broken glass to get out of the car. I just helped him purchase a '99 Impreza 2.5RS (am I insane?) and got a '97 Outback Unlimited for myself. I absolutely love the car! My Subarus have helped to keep my family and me safe. The AWD drive doesn't hurt either for these New England winters.

    it's coming soon. Just working out details on selling the Red XT6. Once that is squared away the SVX will be mine. Should have it within a month or so.

    Dennis you gonna come to the NASA-x on Aug 18th + BBQ? You can beat Dave to running an OBS.

    paisan - I'll be in Pittsburgh that weekend. My oldest step-daughter is going to the culinary institute there. I'm going to have to check out NASA's schedule and pick out a date before the season is over.

    Dave - Remove the vent covers. You'll get an extra 1/8 h.p. :-)
