Could the same could be said for last year's WRX commercials?

Not really. The difference is this year the commercials clearly feature two young people in the cockpit. Last years commercials focused on the cars, and left the people driving out of the picture. You were left guessing who's driving.

So, what's the problem with showing two young care-free people driving fast, and having fun?

It could be misconstrued. The first couple of times I saw it, I misunderstood it. If I—a dedicated Subie nut—misunderstood it, imagine all the others out there who could care less about Subarus or cars.

That's the whole point of this of this criticism of the commercial; not the cars, but the emphasis put on the people in it. Like it or not, young kids having fun (and driving fast) is a dicey issue to show.

in advertising, is to be "remembered." Well, this commercial you certainly do remember. I just hope not for the wrong reasons...

The first snow storm, when you are driving home from work and thinking about your wife driving in the Honda, you will know it was the right choice. Also, your tires will now last 2x as long.

<<Tire Rack is actually very conservative on what they'll sell, so I'm sure it'll fit. They would not sell me wider-than-stock tires, even though Discount Tire did, and even those fit.>>

Tire Rack actually sold me tires that were too wide for my plus-one application. The issue was as much wheel offset (which they also misjudged) as tire width. Fortunately TR took the tires back after only 5 days on the car and exchanged them for ones that fit with the proper offset wheel.

It's directly opposite the stupid Civic commercial where they get in the car, turn up the radio, and sit in the freekin driveway!!!!

:)

On the other hand I take issue with the OB deer commercial when they clearly are trying to put down SUV drivers for racing around the woods, duh, what do you think it sounds like when a rally car comes racing down through the woods?????

This is worse than the Auto vs. Manual discussions in the WRX forum. :-p

Where were you folks when Judge Reinhold challenged a BMW driver to a race down the mountain?
I like the WRX commercial (although the older one was much better)and especially the Outback deer commercial.

Last night I saw an Expedition commercial that involved doing a slalom on an aircraft carrier. That's outrageous!! :-)

I think you're more upset that they picked a paisan look-a-like to be the driver—of a Ford, no less... ;)

Is it a sin to be young? Should they not be allowed to have fun driving? I think we're tip-toeing on the line of censorship.

Is there a little controversy? Sure. Isn't using Martina as spokesperson a little controversial? To some it is.

Ed: cool, at least you tested their return policy, and it worked. I bet they're being more careful. More likely they'd rarely worked with Forester customers.

I like the deer commercial, and the bunny one too! Bring it back! ;-)

The Z4 commercial peeves me, only because I drive a roadster and recognize how incredibly dangerous that would be to the driver, passenger, and anyone else sharing that road with a complete lunatic.

<< Is it a sin to be young? Should they not be allowed to have fun driving? I think we're tip-toeing on the line of censorship. >>

The fact of the matter is young males, driving fast and having fun, is a "buzz image" for all those anti-speed groups out there. This commercial just adds fuel to fire. If you want to provoke those groups, this commercial is a good starting point.

I don't want to see Subaru win the battle, but lose the war, that's all.

From the Crew topic, Subaru says it wants to be Innovative, Individual, and Courageous.

Pulling the ad runs opposite to those goals.

They'd be Conservative, Status-quo, and Boring.

Besides Click & Clack, has anyone else spoken up against the ad? I'd expect there are other ads far more worthy, and I don't think this one will bring that much attention.

Steve - did you consider saving a few bucks and getting Q rated tires for the Odyssey? Most Odysseys (and for that matter most minivans) come with S rated tires from factory only. I've had Q rated Blizzaks on 2 Windstars and a Venture and they are fine for a minivan. In fact they were fine for my two 92 Legacies too!
As for alloys, there is the school which says you should use steel wheels in winter and save your alloys from rusting. I've actually found that the steelies you get from Tirerack and others rust a fair amount after a few seasons while the alloys if looked after (no big dings left unpainted) look almost pristine.
Its not in their website but you could actually get WRX take off alloys from Tirerack for 76 bucks or something! Got the take offs for my WRX when I got snows this season as it was such a bargain! Why I need 3 sets of wheels though I still haven't been able to explain to the better half! Though when the neighbours are stuck in snow and she isn't I get no more complaints about all those tires cluttering the garage!
I have seen a few WRXs with the Fox alloys, should be just fine

I think the reason they rant against the WRX and Subaru is they feel SOA sold out. Subaru has always been the practical car; slow, dependable, cheap, good mpg, etc. They don't rant against a Z4 because Bimmers have always been fast, expensive to own, poor mpg, etc. Don't expect to ever see James Bond in a Subie.

Juice- ambitious, goal-oriented, performance minded male with young family who probably dreams of just getting away from it all once and a while, preferably up some twisty mountain road, which preferably has some cool cabin B&B on it, in which he wouldn't mind having a go at needing a third car seat. SUPRISE! HE LIKES THE AD!! 'cos he's the target market.

Bob- Ambitious, soon to be empty-nester (sorry, bob ;')) ) with many of life's goals met or close enough for general contentment and satisfaction, enjoys cars but also obsesses over towing capacities, maybe still a little worried about who his pride and joy gets into a car with while she's away at school. NOT SUCH A BIG FAN OF THE AD! But not the target demographic for it either. We'll see how he feels about the Legacy Turbo ads in a couple years.

Look, the only, and I mean only reason we are talking about the ad is because of tom and ray. No one said bmwfilms.com promotes doing reverse donughts in a 5 series under heavy small arms fire, or suggests using armor-all to clean blood out of one's X5.
• subearusubearu Member Posts: 3,613
Doesn't everyone come out of subway tunnels doing a jump like in the BMWfilms? ;-) Nah, maybe that's just Paisan.

Interesting that the current ad only sparked their interest. Anyone remember the initial WRX ad with it zipping through the twisties (and the occassional WRC image flashing on the screen)? How about the PT Turbo ads (where's page 11)?

I agree with cptplt on this one... I had Q rated winter tires on my Impreza, no complaints. Don't try any heroics on dry tarmac with them... but in ice, snow and gravel they were awesome.

Actually, I do like the commercial, in spite of what I've posted—or at least can appreciate it. From a creative standpoint, it's very well done. I only question the wisdom of it...

Besides playing the devil's advocate, I do worry a bit if the ad will come back to haunt them from the likes of Ralph Nader, Joan Claybrook, and those who share their thinking. That's my only concern.

BTW, I didn't hear or see the Tom and Ray program. This subject caught my attention in another Edmunds forum, about driving responsibly, a week or so ago. I posted that link here, and the discussion took off.

Thanks for the feedback, guys. I am starting to feel a bit better about having made the decision.

Greg: As a 'neighbor' who knows the uncertainty of the conditions here, your comments were spot on. Now I can't wait for the first snow or ice storm to make it all seem worthwhile.

Juice: Economic realities.... I spent more than I have available. We are just going to have to skip eating for a while to make up the shortfall. ;-) I know I should have gone cheap steel on both cars to save another $200, but I just couldn't do that to the Subaru.

Dennis & Colin: This was another tough one. Subaru recommends H, but you are right, the Honda Odyssey came with lower speed rated T as std equipment. Consumer Reports is pushing H in their November winter tire test as generally worth the extra money in terms of better handling. Beth drives hard - sometimes harder than I do. She was all smiles when we got the Ody as it could take the twisties way faster than the Windstar would allow, so I do worry about what she rides on. Consumers rated the Dunlop Winter Sport (H) well above the Bridgestone WS-50 (Q) in emergency handling, braking & ride, and the difference in price was only about $10 per tire.

The WRX wheels surprised me - wish I had known. I was under the impression that they were narrower than 6.5", as the the Impreza uses 205mm tires vs the Outback at 225mm. I guess that I missed an opportunity. I did call the dealer ($235 each for OB wheels) and some local junk yards looking for rims, but came up with nothing.

Bill: James Bond's cars are always slipping and sliding around in the movies. Definitely not a Subie. ;-)

Loosh: you have me pegged, what can I say?

The BMW Films rock, by the way.

I think if Ralph Nader spoke out against the WRX publicly, there would be a surge of sales from the enthusiast community. I believe he's so anti-car that he doesn't even own one.

$200 is a week of groceries at "casa de juice". So eat Ramen Noodles for a while.

Subaru just inked a deal with Liberty Mutual Insurance. I'm curious as to what the discount amounts to. Does anyone here use them now?

If so, call them up, you'll save money. Then let us know how much % you saved.

I'll call 'em next week and see what's up.
• ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Loosh: call 'em, it's 800-507-7561. I'm curious, they insist it'll save you money for the same coverage, and they use OE parts and offer towing to your Subie dealer if you break down.

My insurance broke their deal with Costco, so I'll be shopping next time I renew, I think in February.

Serge: you know what's scary? With 2 doors and a drop-top, that's close to what I want! 4WD, manual trans, even variable displacement! LOL

There was a Subie 360 on E-bay yesterday... has to be the cutest/goofiest production car of all time. It disappeared today... victim of a "buy it now" perhaps?

I thought it was impossible to get anything more basic than the origional mini, believe or not when I worked in Ireland as a Refrigeration mechanic, the service manager of the company I worked for had a little Mini station wagon as his personal car.

My service van was off the road for a few days for the annual Ministry of transport inspection and I had a lot of out of town service calls lined up.

Anyway he lent me his little car until my van was ready, I think sitting on those bloody seats for a couple of days is where my back problems began,I swore then that a mini would never be in my stable of cars.

Cheers Pat.

of South American Subaru Sightings Contest is...

first, let's see the entries:

Name Total Brazil/Argentina/Chile
Kate: 5 (3/1/1)
Serge (lilbluewgn02): 7 (3/4/0)
Mark (bat1161): 8 (4/3/1)
Juice: 2 (2/0/0)
Frank (p0626): 4 (3/1/0)

and the winner is... Serge!

Well, I never made it to Chile (sob, sob) but did stay in Argentina much longer then needed...

So the count is:

Brazil: 1 (brand new Forester X red, in Rio)
Argentina: 6 (3 Legacys (silver,red,blue), 1 old pre-Loyale coupe, 2 blue Outbacks -- all in BA)

and Serge is the winner because:
a) he predicted the total count exactly
b) he was the only one predicting more Subies in Argentina than in Brazil.

Serge, my cash in Argentina was, um, pretty tight after certain events, but I got a nice Argentinian postcard for you! Just let me know where to mail it. You can send me email to:

unlucky_in_BA@yahoo.com

Congratulation Serge!

Isn't a Mini wagon an oxymoron?

WOW! 6 Subies in Argentina? I'm shocked. I wonder how more were imported to such a small country (relative to Brazil). Especially since Collor (a president we later impeached) had opened the market to imports in Brazil for a few years a while back.

Congrats Serge!

She says she is coming along well, she can feel in her hand again, they removed three discs, inserted some donor bone for fusion, and also put in a Titanium plate.

She does not go back to work until after Christmas I believe, she also has a problem talking at the minute because of swelling, apparently they performed the surgery through the front, which I think is becoming more common than going through the back of the neck.

I think this way there is less risk of doing major damage in the process.

She did not mention if she had to rear a halo contraption until the fusion is secure.
Cheers Pat.
• rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
That's serious surgery! I had no idea it was that extensive. I thought it was just a bone spur being removed, or something like that.
