    Well Driver,
If I had been in Florida, I would have been working on a mower and sweating.
I did learn a lot about how my snow blower comes apart and goes together, so not a bad Saturday morning, although a little sore from spending some time laying in the driveway.

it finally warmed up enough today (broke 50!) and some sun and no wind, so I got the princesses car washed (she left it here this weekend and we dropped her at the train for a visit to NYC). once again, it was filthy from commuting in sloppy weather, but once again shiny and she will be able to see out the windows.

tomorrow, both of my cars get a much needed bath too. RDX looks like it has leprosy.

My next door neighbor washed his car today.
Tomorrow we are supposed get rain and snow, so not sure why he did that.
I'm waiting until Tuesday to go to the car wash, just in case.

I have a stupid question. Where on this site do you calculate the TMV for a new car? I tried “appraise my car” but that’s only for used. It’s suggests I use the new car calculator but I can’t seem to find it?

for the Tesla fans, I stopped at a local outdoor upscale mall today (TJC would know the place). They have LL Bean, Apple store, Orvis, sur la table, and a bunch of restaurants. So, not cheap stuff. Had to park around the side, and noticed they installed a supercharger station. I counted 11 "pumps", so pretty good size. About 2 today, fairly busy in the center, there were 3 cars parked at them. A type S, a Jeep Patriot, and a Sonata. I don't think the Tesla aficionados would be too fond of those last 2. Not an issue at the time, but I would be ticked if I followed instructions to get to a charger, to find a non-Tesla hogging it. But, public parking lot, I doubt they can do much about someone parking there?
That situation is referred to as “ICEing”.  The mall most likely owns the property, and they can have the cars towed away if it becomes a more serious issue.  Some states are enacting laws somewhat similar to parking in a handicap spot without the proper placard.

I’ve been watching a Netflix original “F 1”, formula one. The editorial view is that all these 20 or so drivers are SO talented. Yet, when it comes to just staying in the race without a crash, there does not seem to be too many sharp tools in the box. One “elite” driver ran into the rear of his own team mate with no other car around. Another driver, for many races couldn’t go 1 lap without a crash. One race he went exactly 1 block.

Of course, nothing that ever happens to them is ever their fault ? Be that as it may, crashes fights & blameless finger pointing are probably the most entertaining.

A few weeks ago on The Grand Tour (on Prime), James May did a good retrospective on Jim Clark. Apparently his car control was so superior to everyone else’s at the time that those who were around him couldn’t believe that he made a mistake to cause the crash at Hockenheim that killed him.

Most people who should know think that a tire problem caused the crash.

That must be a Canadian thing. I never heard of ribs with a baked potato. Salad OK, coleslaw OK, fries OK (in fact, preferred), baked potato or mashed potatoes NOT OK.

FWIW, I don't order ribs when I go out anymore. I like the way I make them better. Especially my HOT bar-b-que sauce.

I don't eat fries anymore. I like them, but fries have 400 or more calories.......baked potato 180. Bar B Q sauce is loaded with sugar and salt, I get that on the side and don't use much. It is hard not eating whatever I want to eat...but then, I can wear a horizontal striped T-shirt. Also got a Bud Lite, but I probably didn't gain any weight with that meal.

I spent quite a bit of time working in India and had a few rules that kept me healthy. The westerners I worked with out there would almost always get sick when they didn’t follow one of these rules. The locals are used to the microorganisms, but westerners beware.
    1. Only drink bottled water and other drinks.
    2. Insist on breaking the seal of the bottle yourself.
    3. Look for glue residue on the bottle cap. Refilling bottles is a common practice and you need to be insistent on new bottles.
    4. No fresh fruits and veggies unless they’re smooth skinned and washed with chlorinated water, or peeled.
    5. No fresh veggies that can hide microorganisms even when washed, like broccoli.
    6. Anything eaten must be cooked enough to kill microorganisms, or be packaged.
    7. Avoid meat. Storage and handling are different there.
    8. Before taking a shower, fill your mouth with Listerine and keep it there until you’ve toweled off.
    9. Wash your hands frequently and follow up with hand sanitizer.

My grandson pitched 2 scoreless innings (5th and 6th) with 4 strikeouts yesterday - but all for naught.  They lost 15-5 and threw the towel in after 7 innings due to the 10 run rule after 7.

It seems that the coaches didn’t want to start him because of his bout with strep and mono.  But now that they saw him for the first time since he was sick, they may start him tomorrow and I am going home tonight after their game.

He looked strong - his fast ball was great as were his curve and his change-up.  At least they didn’t score on him like they did with the other pitchers (4) yesterday.  So the other team scored 15 runs in 5 out of 7 innings.  Unfortunately, the team they played is in 1st place in the southeastern division of the NAIA.

I bought a jar of pickles on Friday at Sobeys (Canadian supermarket chain Driver would be familiar with), their house brand.

When I got home and was putting them on the shelf I noticed they are made in India.

I am unsure if I actually want to try them now.

Amazing that it is cheaper to make them there and ship them all the way here than it is to get them from a packer in Ontario or the USA.

at times my company went down the "ship all the jobs to India" path, and some of us would have to go there for periods of time to train them. A few people ended up quite sick, but others skirted that. Staying at the fancy Western hotel was key I think. Also IIRC the only place to get a drink!

I would rather experience the local culture and food, though in this case, might seriously regret it.

I wanted no part of a shift in India, so I volunteered to spend a month in Iowa, in the winter, instead. I think I came out ahead on that deal!

Safest drink to have in any country is beer...usually made with finest filtered water, boiled and sealed.
Bottled water is dangerous in any poor country, they refill bottles from cesspools and put the cap back on.
Sometimes people are careful, then they will do something like get a drink....with ice cubes...which could have been made from toxic water. Or order a salad, washed in it.

A winter in Iowa and you think you came out ahead? Well, it takes all kinds to make a world. As David Byrne said of the Texas desert, “God overcooked it, and could have started over, but then said, ‘I’ll just make people who like it that way.’”
By the way I’m sure the pickles are perfectly safe. And they may even be delicious!

Yes, we have Sobies near us. I feel the same way when we buy tomatoes and vegetables that come from Mexico. Just have to hope the big chains are careful about venting their suppliers. I also understand fish are grown on fish farms in rivers like the Yangtze in China....and are imported to Canada and U.S. Ever seen the Yangtze...it looks like the color of motor oil.

All very good points. At my Caribbean home I follow most of your above practices and more. For example:
I brush my teeth with only boiled water.
I make my ice with boiled bottled water and I don't use ice when I'm out at a restaurant.
I do not shake hands. Fist bumps only.
All cups and dishes are washed with boiled water just before use.
I eat only cooked frozen vegetables imported from the US.

We are quite advantaged here in the United States when it comes to the quality of the food for sale on the market thanks to the USDA. But, we have had outbreaks of salmonella on vegies grown here in the U.S.A. recently even with the scrutiny of the USDA. The safety of food, water and the air we breathe is essential to a healthy life here in our country. Just thinking about the dangers human beings face when eating, drinking and breathing in 2nd and 3rd World Counties is scary - something we normally don't have to face here in the United States (and Canada since they, too, scrutinize food, water and air quality).

We really need to realize the dangers most Asian, Middle East and African inhabitants face day in and day out when it comes to the safety of the food they eat, the water they drink and the air they breathe. I have seen photos and videos of people in large cities in China wearing masks on their faces when they are outdoors due to the horrendous air pollution from the burning of fossil fuels. We take these life sustaining systems (food, water, air) for granted.

Actually, in other countries local folks do just fine with their food, it’s visitors that haven’t developed immunities to the local microorganisms that have problems. Same with travelers from abroad to the United States.

That’s something I did not know about visitors to the US.  I assumed it was the opposite - that because we scrutinize our food so carefully it was healthier for visitors.  You learn something new every day here on Edmunds!

Some of the best Indian food is indeed in the west! This is despite occasional outbreaks in/on so called “healthy” foods, sometimes “organic”.

This has been true for quite a while but for example, due to grading systems, 90% of the food can be wasted in the USA.
