    No, Legacys are OK. Technically the WRX wagon is borderline, also. WRX Sedan is definitely Darth Vader's transport. ;-)

    Yeah Loosh I have also noticed the lack of civility and respect over at NASIOC, thank God for Edmunds, we just get the odd nutjob.

    juice, does the bumper have to be painted? I had the same experience with my rear bumper 3 weeks after getting the car, I never found out who did it,mine was pretty badly scraped so it had to be painted.

    To Ken, Ed...congrats on your various accomplishments, especially good wishes to you and your wife, Ken on the forthcoming new Subie fan...how about Kimiko for a name? And Brian, congrats to you and your wife also.

    I had been in touch with a guy in Austalia...he sent Michael a Subie NZ poster of the rally car also autographed by Tommi and Kaj, plus the official 2002 Telstra Rally of Australia Poster...also very nice; too bad it's got a Pug on it!
    I started substitute teaching in Michael's former school 2 minutes down the road...it's something and I enjoy it, though it can be frustrating...
    Michael took the high school SATs last weekend as part of the Duke University Talent Identification Program for kids from Southern states who did well on the various tests. He had gotten 99th percentile on both English and Math FCATS (Florida's elementary standardized tests)...so far, he is doing well in middle school. We are getting ready for his Bar-Mitzvah in 6 weeks...any of you guys here on Jan 25th are welcome to watch him become a man in the eyes of G-d.

    Oddly, when I was in Japan last year all the girls I was working with seemed to have K name; Kazumi, Kyoko etc.

    Of course you could avoid Japanese cultural stereotypes and try the Australian with "Kylie". It is an aboriginal word for boomerang.

    Actually name choosing is one ofthe great time wasters of pregnancy. I can recall sharing names with Judy along the lines of
    "How about Achilles?"
    "No, someone would shoot him in the foot!"

    We ended up with some good ones for our kids (Tamsin and Angus - no K anywhere as I was't a Subaru owner then) but had heaps of fun along the way. Hope you have similar pleasure.

    'bout my WRX purchase.
    I ordered the Factory Upgrade Security ~$130;
    now I get a call that it is an Active Alarm System and for $200 they'll upgrade it to a passive alarm. I'm told that Subaru's factory alarms are active.

    Can someone clarify this. Somewhere along the line, I have this instinct that an attempt to take me for a ride was made.

    I think an attempt was made to make a little extra money at your expense, most alarm systems can be made passive or active by reprograming, usually with the remote,passive meaning it will arm itself if you forget to arm with the remote.

    For months while doing the paperwork and hoop jumping for Adoption #1, we referred to the baby-to-be as Tondelayo (I think she was a comic strip character from way back when). Tondelayo eventually became Emily. Our closest friends on the trip to China used Grizzabella right up until a week before we got the kids. Grizzy became Sarah.

    Mine is pretty simple, as I like my OBW. I am just waiting for the day when the Recall Notice comes in the mail. It reads something along the lines of:

    "We would like to reprogram your engine computer to put back the killer performance that was accidentally deleted on the last 250,000 vehicles produced. The change in engine map will result in approximately 75lb-ft of additional low end torque, and 50 additional hp on the upper end. We regret any inconvenience that driving without this has caused you in the previous year."

    See?, my needs are simple. ;-)

    Friends expecting twins referred to them as B1 and B2, making reference to the "Bananas in Pyjamas". Having written that, I am not sure if the cartoon series has ever made it to the US but it is a whole lot saner and more educational than Barney and the songs are less maddening in the car.

    Most factories ones I've dealt with are active. Passive means that they automatically arm themselves. Passive ones get you a bigger discount on your car insurance.


    $70 to go from the factory active to a passive isn't that bad.

    that's labor, I'm sure.

    the factory alarms should all be Alpine now (ovoid remote fob) and they all have passive capability. you could possibly have it enabled at a car audio & security shop for less.

    that guy (not Ira) wants another $200 on top of the $130 security upgrade I'd already paid. >:\

    Now, the reason I save the guy face is that you and I know Ira, and gave it a $100 for his pocket (just to flip the switch). If that Finance guy yanks me any further, I'll make him show me that additional security unit he wanted for $200 that changes the alarm from active to passive.

    Yes the wonder finance people. I have the same problem over in SI right now. Mark tried to get me pricing on extending my Isuzu Factory warrany on the Trooper, and they won't sell me the factory extended, the finance person says "we only sell aftermarket ones" So I'm probably gonna have to go over to Open Road Honda/Isuzu to get my extended one. I find the Finance people to be the worst. :(

    I agree with Colin, that the passive feature could be enabled at any Car audio store, on most aftermarket systems like the Viper I have in the Titan allow you to program active or passive yourself, I also had Clifford alarms in my last cars and you could also program them yourself.

    I agree with Colin and with you too. I have the Clifford 700 on my then 98OB and current 99 OBS.

    This Finance guy (hereinafter the "Dingbat") just got me fuming. Dingbat went into such a descriptive con (like I know 0% about alarms) that Subaru Alarm, a unit by itself, is active and a separate unit is needed [purchased], the "Passive Alarm", to make it a passive unit.

    I bet Dingbat is going to sell me the instruction manuals too.

    p/s: The purchase experience with the Dealer (Ira and Crew) has been very pleasant; right up till Dingbat came along.

    and the finance dept @ that dealer they probably don't know that they could use the original setup. They probably WILL put in the aftermarket one. I would just get it straightup and do the aftermarket stuff yourself or have it installed.

    Nice wishes, Steve and Loosh. I just got a pile of JDM brochures from Ken, so ah, it's gonna take me a while to choose which one I want!

    I'll share some interesting observations about those in Future Models later.

    Pat: there is about a 9" scratch on the bumper, but the paint only came off in a 1" stretch. So I'm going to try to buff out the scratch, then touch-up the one spot. It's maybe 1/8" thin, so really it's not even visible if you stand next to it, you have to crouch down to see it.

    I'm OCD, so to me it's a near total loss. ;-)

    I will do surgery and report back. I actually need to order Wintergreen touch-up paint.

    Dave: I too had a feeling my first would be a girl, and was right. Then again, I thought I was getting a 2nd girl, and nope.

    Dave - It must be a NY thing. My friend in Westchester asked me the same question. I've never heard a NJ dealer mention that. Either way, I wouldn't spend too much on an alarm in this area. They want it, they'll take it.

    Flemington didn't mention any other options to me. I told them what I wanted, and they didn't push anything else. :-)

    Let's see ... I already got a couple of really nice gifts a bit early ... but along with the jewelry, car, etc .. that I could put on the list ... how about a few practical items?

    --mortgage on the house marked paid
    --bedroom furniture that matches and actually STORES something
    --a shed to store the stuff in the "other" 1/2 of the garage so the b/f can get HIS car in (you didn't think I'd let the Outback sit in the driveway did you?)
    --a snowblower

    --and therapy for the 12, 14, and 20 year old of the "mixed-up family" we call home --- or maybe they'll grow out of it ....

    Since it's been a lousy year on Wall Street, and there's a war looming, we need to think "survival" this time around. That being the case, what do you hope Santa will stuff your garage, er, stocking?

    My choices:

    • An '04 WRX 5-speed silver wagon, for stealth self expression.

    • An '03 4Runner V8, for pulling my trailer and vacation needs.

    • An '04 turbo Baja, just for the heck of it...

    • A Bradley Fighting machine, for when it gets really tough out there.

    OK, we need to pull in the belt somewhat due to Wall Street and the Iraq thingy, so:

    • $50K max budget.

    • Available, in showrooms by this Christmas.

    So, my revised list:

    • An '03 WRX 5-speed silver wagon, for stealthy self expression.

    • An '03 Baja 5-speed, for pulling my trailer, vacation needs, and just for the heck of it...

    Those, if purchased at Fitz, should come in just under $50K.

    Bob- Technically it's called a "Bradley Fighting Vehicle". But why settle for yesterday's technology? The "Stryker", the Army's new Interim Armored Vehicle is far more practical for fighting that holiday mall traffic :(o)

    I think I'd prefer the MTVR. It's got more trunk space (for hauling X-Mas toys, such as the WRX) and has a fully independent suspension, for carving through twisty backroads.

    OK, I'd get the $50 grand and buy:

    * a Ford Expedition XLT for about $35 grand
    * $15 grand for the first year of gas!

    Just kidding! Can't break my pledge to buy vehicles that get 20mpg or better in the city, and that would blow it out of the water.

    Hmm, if I'm adding to my current fleet, I'd get:

    * WRX sedan
    * Odyssey EX van

    A fun car and a practical van, just under the limit.

    My list would change significantly next year. It might include a Baja AND a Forester, both turbos.

    Juice, I think you may be over budget by a few $K.

    The WRX is around $25K, and the Honda is around $28K, IIFC. Now if you get a WRX wagon and a LX Honda minivan, you might be OK.

    $22,116 for a blue wagon from Fitz right now. MSRP on an EX van is $27,360, so total is $49,476. The $524 would buy tint and a sway bar for the WRX, and I'd still have money left for gas.

    You can get an Ody for MSRP around here. I'd actually go through Costco and try to get a better price, since I could afford to wait the 4 months or so that would take. If so, I'd make it an EX-L.

    Kirsten would finally get her Mini Cooper S, but would keep the Outback as well. Then there would be a WRX wgon for me. I'd sell the Outback rims and the rally tire/steelies to go toward 17"s for the WRX. I'd keep my RS rims for autocross and keep the stockers for winter.

    Got back yesterday from a weekend trip to snowless Winter Park, CO. My whitey performed beautifully, anyway. While it was screeming a little bit while climbing mountain roads (I was going 60-65 @4000RMP) I experienced no problems. We'll see what the MPG was but looking at the tripometer and how much gas I have left it doesn't look too bad. I was looking forward to driving in snow but the road were so clean I was amaized.
