Not here yet, but I suspect Subuaru will have to step up N. America's security features.

Ooo you're going for the silver too right?
heehee the 3 wise men in silver

What a way to say "Happy holidays".
Mark
$1200 for two-tone perforated leather is reasonable, if they can preserve the heated seat function, which I'm sure they will.
Congrats on being the first "old school" Crew member to get an XT! It's gonna be a great Holiday season for you!
With two fewer Crew on The Fence, it's actually getting reasonably roomy!

I'd hold off on most mods, except better tires, until you get to know your stock vehicle. The rear sway bar will help also and is an easy swap.
IMO, the strut towers are not worth it. The front is pretty well braced with the chassis and the rear would require you cutting plastic and putting a bar across your cargo space.
As for the STS, make sure that the resulting shifter height won't be too low. The Forester's stock shifter is already longer than the WRX. You would be reducing the throw a lot more relative to a WRX going to a STS. I put a Kartboy shifter on my 98 Forester S and the shift knob was waaaay too low.

End of the month/year special discounts??
Bob
Well, maybe. ;-)
I need to see the new Legacy and the 7 seater, probably drive them too. That puts my decision off until fall at least.
Then there is v1.0 syndrome, I'd rather wait until any new model is sorted out, not to mention end of model year discounts. That might push me to ... fall of 2005!

I haven't been able to post much and am probably about 10,000 posts behind in my reading. We are all in a period of adjustment, plus Beth and I have been sick. No, not SARS, but some other nasty respiratory bug that we were brewing as we left Asia, and doesn't want to leave. Kind of funny, really, as neither kid has it - only their Caucasian parents! A targeted flu....
On Saturday, I was witness to a lady hitting the Subaru with her van's door. The parking lot was sloped, and I think she lost control of it. It left a nice dent in the crease just above the door handle line on my side. While I wanted to rip out her heart and lungs for sport, I saw how fried she looked, and thought about how we were feeling as well. I lightly admonished her to be more careful, then wished her a good holiday. Just a little concession to seasonal spirit.
Juice - Gotcha Day question. Although we were given Annie late in the day of Sunday 11/30, the 'official' paper signing was Monday morning, December 1, so 12/1 is the date we are going to use.
Brenda - Glad to hear your dad is doing better
Serge - I lit the menorah in your and Susan's honor this year.
Pat - Enjoy the time with your daughter
Steve
I am glad that you are settling back in.
Cheers Pat.
Welcome back Steve! I hosted that other photo you asked me to, check your e-mail.
My old buddy and college roommate came over and celebrated their Chanukah with us. My daughter even lit a Menorah, it was cool. We're not Jewish but have a very diverse set of friends, not unlike the Subaru Crew itself. Of course they saw our Christmas tree and even added a few presents under it.
Long live diversity, and may we share our favorite traditions with each other and celebrate the holidays together.
Hey, that means pass me the keys Frank!
HO HO HO!

Dennis and Frank: Best of luck with your new rides -- send us pics ASAP!

Juice- Re the Grinch comment... When I got behind the wheel of the FXT... my smile grew 3 sizes that day! BTW, since when did you have a phobia for V1.0s? Isn't Sandy one?
Honestly guys, the FXT is scary quick. If I don't start paying closer attention I'm gonna get my first speeding ticket in over 12 years. Talk about a fun revving engine, it's like the FXT is saying "Let's play!" I also have to renounce my previous skepticism regarding the usefulness of the hill-holder clutch. Although I’ve never worried about rolling backwards, it’s fun to be able to take your foot off the brake when stopped on an incline and after only one day, I think I’m already spoiled!
Well off to do some more Christmas shopping. See, I knew there was a good reason for my procrastination, since now I get to do it in my FXT! Chao!

#2 Don't exercise.
Hey... may as well have some I know I will keep for once.
#3 Another new Subaru during calendar 2004... and one I will do my best to keep.
Cheers Pat.

The hardest hit was the town of Paso Robles -- lots of historic brick buildings came down. A good indication why most homes out here are built on wooden frames.

Sandy is a very late build 1998 model, so she's a v1.9 maybe. Bought her in August just before the 99s arrived.
I can live vicariously through Frank. Did ya name her yet?
Ready for something funny - some folks say Subaru is the Japanese Porsche, right? Well, the Cayenne V6 model with the MT gets the Hill Holder feature! Hilarious, they are now the German Subaru.
They really should have used the 911 boxer engine in there, but I digress...

Dennis & Frank where in the middle of the fence, then when we were sleeping peacefully, they hopped, skipped, and jumped off the XT end.
There is a grave disturbance in the 'Envy'. Jealousy has crept in. ;-)
Oh - for those not on the fence yet, there's room, plenty of room. Legacy, WRX, or XT - (in my best (LOL) Clinton voice) we feel your pain!

Hey where's paisan?
-Frank P.
I can't believe the XT-cy around here this week. Pretty funny; we've all been online buds for years now, and very few of us have actually purchased a new car since then.
Thanks for asking though!
Loosh -- good point. It's been a while since ANY of us have bought new vehicles. I have a feeling that's all going to change over the next few months. I'm getting ready for my "shopping" trip to NAIAS in a few weeks.
Ken
I am a bit envious. It isn't my car for keeps like you guys. That being said, I think my hubby might just get rid of his '90 wagon and lease one of these. It's the most tempting one I've had for him in a few years.
Once again, congratulations. Now Lucien...can we tawwk?
Patti
Patti, it is faster than a WRX. :-D
Now nag them for more FXT SPT parts!!

Yeah, where is paisan? Haven't heard from him in quite a while.
I've had Sandy for 5 1/3 years. Even Lucky is already 1 1/2 years old.
Patti's got one too, now? Not enough shrinks in the world for me, I'm hopeless!
My daughter apparently has my sense of humor. Yesterday I was putting her to bed and asked if she remembered when we went to the park to feed the ducks. I asked her what ducks like to eat, she yelled, "CHICKEN" and busted out laughing. We both giggled for a good 5 minutes or so. She's only 4 and already she's coming up with her own jokes.

So Patti, think SOA has an upgrade (crossgrade?) program? :-) I'll trade a 1.5 year old XS and an almost new WRX for an XT, no problem. Two cars for one, who could pass up that deal! If the XT was silver, my wife might not even notice right away!
Craig
This just in from our Aussie friends: H6 Legacy gets a trip computer, the rear intermittent wiper goes to full speed automatically if you shift into reverse, and the 5 speed Sportshift is like buttah.
Just trying to keep The Fence from keeling over!

So we're driving along in the Outback, in the middle of a string of maybe 10 cars, say around 40 mph, certainly no more than that. Everyone is slowing slightly as we crest one of the little doo wops and hit some direct sunlight glare. On the downward slope is where all hell breaks loose. Seems a small stream of water was flowing down the hill on the right on crossing the road, where it froze overnight and hadn't yet melted. One car hits it and gets a little sideways. I dont' really notice that right away because of the sun (we're heading dead east at 8:30 a.m.) The car in front of us wigs out and stands on the brakes, starts sliding, overcorrects snaps around, just as I hit the ice as well.
I don't really know what happened after that. I do know that I never panicked, and that 2 invaluable days on a skidpad, 2 additional days of track time (2years ago!) and all that autocross experience took over from there. I know I got sideways, I know I was deep into the ABS, and I know I contemplated putting the car in the scrub, but that after evaluating the rate of closure of oncoming traffic I slid the Outback across the 2 lanes and neatly tucked it into someone's driveway, than back into my lane once the cars passed. The follwing car stopped about 3 feet from the spun car.
I was a little wiggy, mostly from that adrenaline spike. Felt just like the chemical buzz after the 1st run of the day at autocross really. But my Dad was speechless. He said, "I don't know what you just did, but that was amazing!"
*Shrug* Hell, I don't even have that much experience, compared to Paisan, Colin, or some of the local BMW CCA track hounds. But what I have is still 10x more than the average motorist, and was the difference between a scary ice patch and a 3+ car pileup. A little luck never hurts, either!

Loosh: Wow. I bet you wished you had that on tape (except for changing out of the Depends)!

I was poking through John's pics of the Aussie H6 (he posted the link on the Legacy/Outback wagons topic), and noticed what appears to be a key with integrated remote. Take a look and see what you think.
